You put your country over ego,
ambition, and pride. You've made possible an exciting and joyful
new beginning. Now, I know presidents don't want
to bow out. Both Richard Nixon and Lyndon Johnson had to be
shoved out of office. You were not forced out. You made a choice that I know
must have been painful. You came into office at a moment when our country
was in the grip of a pandemic that had been allowed to
sprawl out of control. About 3,000 Americans
were dying every day. Our economy was in shambles. Our democracy had come
perilously close to being toppled. You brought kindness and empathy
back to the Oval Office. Even among people
who are not president, old age inevitably
triggers denial. I mean, how many elderly
people are unwilling to accept that they can't do the things they used to or think they should
be able to do? How many willingly
give up the keys to their car? But you care about this country
and know the damage a second Trump administration could do. Your patriotism and good sense won out over any wounded ego. Trump is nothing but ego. He could never do what you did.
