Oklahoma RB coach Demarco Murray serving a one-game suspension for this

this is basically a News segment an explainer for why DeMarco Murray has been suspended for one game after impermissible contact with 17 recruits over 16 months and what it amounts to is basically Murray didn't know he needed a covid-19 waiver to keep recruiting I mean it's this is the same sort of stuff that we've seen going on all over college football where the rules during Co had changed when the rules changed back or when we made decisions that affected the rules Allah when the schedule starts transport portal all those things some of this stuff gets lost in the wash as you are a running backs coach trying to recruit the best running backs in the country and I think this is going to happen more and more as the NCAA gets down with these cases but for Oklahoma's purposes they self-reported this violation um and one of the things that I actually think is cool about the rules changing is the head coach was presumed to be responsible for everything going on at their program and January 2023 the head coach responsibility rules had shifted where you could rebut a presumption uh to automatic because venol was not personally involved in violations and demonstrated that he promoted an atmosphere of compliance and monitor his staff venol rebutted his presumed responsibility for some of the earlier violations I think this is all pretty much above board but the Crux of what got DeMarco into trouble is he 17 prospects 16 months including 65 impermissible phone calls and 36 impermissible text messages I might send at least that many text messages a day and at least that many phone calls a day to whomever Murray indicated that he was not aware of the covid-19 waiver of recruiting enforcement staff determined that the school that had properly educated football coaches on The applicable recruiting rules the timing of the changes to them Oklahoma's going to play temple on Saturday Oklahoma should not need DeMarco Murray to beat Temple on Saturday I think everybody understands that I also think that a lot of this is going to come up but I also think that it's kind of fascinating this came out the day after uh Brent vinales had his coaches show which you know timing is everything with a lot of these things and I'm sure that the timing was working the way that it worked for the for one of these reasons there's other things to to take into account here which is what exactly is a recruiting violation now right I think when we're in the spot where we can pay players and we can sign them to contract before they even get to schools I'm really starting to ask the question which bylaws need to stay and which bylaws need to go for the NCAA now the rules are what the rules are and this is an example of until the rule changes you need to follow the rule however if the rule is Antiquated we need to start looking at a process for changing them instead of continuing to look at a process of changing the transfer portal dates and windows I'm more concerned about this sort of stuff where you can affect coaches being on the sidelines right we saw this happen with Florida State Alex Atkins drove a recruit to a booster's house and he had to sit out the Georgia Tech game for that reason now I think that directly affected them on the field because Alex Atkins I think is a better play caller than Mike norell for this offense I also wonder just what that would mean from an offensive line standpoint because I've always kind of been interested in offensive line coaches being coordinators because they generally speaking have a better on what the offensive line is doing or not doing than say a quarterback's coach uh I tend to go with the the position you coach the most is probably the one you trust the most so you're going to put the ball in the quarterback's hands in you know winning situations or you're going to put in the offensive Line's hands in winning situations I think all that stuff matters in as far as Demarco is concerned I think that this is going to just go I think he's going to regret not being on the field for something like this meaning if you just got the waiver everything else is going to be fine here but uh this is one of those where it's hard for me to go after the NCAA for anything uh in this moment because mostly we've gotten everything we asked which is name image and likeness is a thing the transfer portal is a thing I want kids to be able to move as freely as their coaches and now I would like their coaches to be able to send as many text messages and make as many phone calls as they want to because we are in a new age of the sport where so much is not just changing but so much is fluid the competition on the field is change that's what it is we're going to go into new rules for college football this year we're going to stop the clock at 2 minutes right we are going to have a 12 team playoff we are going to find out just what it looks like to have coaches hired to new jobs on playoff teams that's going to be fascinating there's so much other crap that we need to be looking toward and this is also the same day that the sign stealer doc has come out if you like uh if you like this Channel please continue to uh watch it but also subscribe to it because I did that that segment and I will do segments like this one for the foreseeable future and we're closing in on 100,000 subscribers I think the sign stealing the coach uh the headset the helmet communication the these recruiting violations all these things are coming at a time when it feels like we should just be talking about football and we're not just talking about football and I've been pretty consistent about this point I really want to talk about the ball that is being played or will be played like I was really getting excited to talk about Thursday matchups when this news dropped and I'm like okay well I guess we got to go talk about what other stuff is happening with NCAA violations especially as it relates to Oklahoma for obvious reasons the last thing that I would leave you with as we talk about these recruiting violations and we talk about who is being punished for what is do you think that the system needs to be overhauled and if you think that the system needs to be overhauled what would you do to overhaul the system I can tell you what's not going to happen what's not going to happen is the genie ain't going back in the bottle okay players are going to get paid coaches are going to get paid college football is still a booming industry the money is going to get longer the money is going to get larger which means the inequality gap between the halves and Have Nots is also going to get larger take all of that into account when you talk about what you want the sport to be because anything that has the sport going back to what it once was is a nonstarter we're not anymore we're not going to do that anymore you have to start thinking of this as going forward you have to push the story forward you have to be seen ahead on the board you can't argue strategy anymore you have to look at the field of play and take what you can get and if you take what you can get you're probably going to go score you just need to trust your principles and trust your understanding of what's in front of you I know that there are a lot of people that are pushing back and getting up from the table because it's getting tough out here it's getting hard but I mean I didn't work my behind off and cover this sport for the last my God half my life now only to push back because there's a little bit of chaos okay I think this is indicative of a little bit of chaos but it's really something that's under the bridge Oklahoma knew it was coming but I'm more interested in in what other people tend to want to do about this and what you can get done right that's the other thing building consensus is great persuading people is great but can you do it and if you can't do it can you come to something like cons ilation first rule of rhetoric is not you're not winning an argument you're conceding a point so that you can make a larger point that not everything needs to be worth the everything is not worth the squeeze the juice is not always worth the squeeze in this I'll bet he wishes he could have those phone calls and those text messages back if for no other reason than being on the sideline but I think Oklahoma's going to be fine I think Temple is a great matchup for Oklahoma this this week so we can see what the hell is going on in that interior offensive line which is the only place where still got a got a question mark as to what I can expect there we're going get an answer to that we're going to get answer to a lot of questions about college football this weekend starting on Thursday and I can't wait to not have to talk about recruiting violations sign stealing or show cause penalties because I would really love to play ball y'all
