No Changes - Modern Is Fine But Legacy In Shambles? | June 24 2024 B&R Discussion

Introduction the June 24th 2024 ban in restricted announcement gives us no changes in all formats the next update will be in August but I think there's a lot of really interesting points that are being made in this article now we knew off the top that there weren't going to be made any changes made in modern we had that addressed previously especially with modern Horizon 3 just being released and the metag game being really fluid still at the moment there are a lot of players that are coming out on top like Ruby storm and the Nadu but there are still a lot of other Decks that are still making their way to the top like prison Tron and some of the mardu grief Titan variants so I think you know it's still yet to be seen what's ultimately going to land out as the top 10 decks in modern but I think the lack of some changes in other formats is still really interesting to discuss here and that's what I wanted to read through today we're not going to read through the whole BNR just to select few and of course if you have your own opinions about what's going on in this B&R let me know in the comments section down below and even after the talking point if you have some things to edit then you know edit and edit your response let me know what you think but of course leave a like on the video it helps to push it out on the algorithm really appreciated there let's hop right into let's skip standard let's skip Pioneer these aren't formats that I play so you know if you want to touch base on them go for it but what I want to go through I'm I'm actually just going to change my camera a bit here maybe bring The Modern Format it up to the top let's talk modern here so modern as we announced previously there'll be no changes to the modern in anticipation of pro tour modern rizon 3 um sizeable impact on the format we're still very very early into the new metag game although Nadu winged wisdom has raised some very early concerns it appears modern the modern format has proven it has the tools to fight it which is correct um I think the archetype is you know really strong but there are a lot of opportunities for you to remove counter and interact with the deck altogether um with its results over modern leagues and challenges starting to stabilize over the last few days in the format um and we are starting to get this data by the way right like if you saw a recent Twitter post and I can link that down below I shared it how we are starting to get the data that they use where they're like 51% of the decks in the metag game are de Shadow and the win rate for death Shadow is like 42% against the me against whatever right like we are starting to get that data thanks to the Daybreak games collaboration they have uh had that being pushed for a while now they got it approved and so we're going to start to get this metagame data that a lot of these websites are going to start to collate and really provide to us so that's a really big win here we're going to start to see what they mean by The Meta game stabilizing and how has the tools to fight it and the rise of spell-based combo and Ruby storm with Ruby Medallion and R Monsoon Mage is a notable addition to the format that fights Nadu by being typically faster um and similarly as it has Riot risen in popularity so to have efforts to defeat it which is also fair I think this Ruby storm deck might be a little powerful but I mean we have uh effects like fluster storm um and then new consign the memory specifically in Blue uh we are going to have some options in white like some prison pieces that could stop it as well so we yet to see how this will kind of land it's been awesome to see archetypes emerge with a new deck utilizing both energy and alrai packages so the eldrazi uh prison decks the Tron prison decks um there are some energy decks out there using that red bolt spell um and some other effects in the boros decks um as well as the aformentioned combo decks and 10 new builds El draitron mardu mid-range with the Johnny nadle Pariah and the uh saurin House of marov this is a card that's really cool monoblock necro dominance ghoul prowess blah blah BL are all different Decks that we've seen one magic online challenges events since the release of modern rizen 3 which is really nice right aor control Badu is it Merk tide Goro's Vengeance R prods like this is generally speakings of a pretty diverse metag game which I'm happy about um I think right now the metag game is really diverse and there's a lot of things that you can explore if you hop into a game of Mo a league of modern you're probably going to be playing very different decks every single game which I'm really happy about it's a really great time after a set like this to see the format being explored obviously we have some really broken or powerful things happening in the format but it's generally a good time to be playing Modern once things settled down if scam starts to come back out at the top then maybe my opinions might change but again I'm generally in agreeance with this we don't need to change anything now I The Legacy Format think the real frustration that a lot of people have is with this Legacy sentiment here a lot of Legacy players a lot of big Legacy content creators have also been talking about how Legacy has been a very frustrating place with the the Decks that have come out on top with the play patterns of grief scam really taking over Legacy and providing really frustrating play patterns um in terms of what it's dealt with like when you think about like grief hitting you right grief uh especially if you reanimate it it's three cards to take your opponent's two cards right at its Baseline it's two cards to take your opponent's one but especially in a combo deck or a very value centered strategy you might be taking their best play that they may not have necessarily the answers to so if you go to force of will it that's two cards to counter your opponent's two cards that's even that's even on value which grief wants you to do if you da it then they probably have the land to kind of counter that so days doesn't necessarily work although if you want to reanimate then days will work but there's just so many things here that grief pushes in terms of a play pattern um we see reanimator been at the top of the Legacy metag game for a very long time so I think just just saying no changes here you know we're approaching Legacy in a similar way to Modern right now with modern risen's bringing major changes to the format and they want to see how it responds after this release while the community explores mod Horizon 3 we continue to monitor play rate and win rates of reanimator which you know they're mentioning as it surged dramatically in recent months we intend to take a hard look at Legacy in the next announcement coming late August so I think this is the frustrating thing that a lot of people have where it's kind of like dangling a carrot where we see that they do intend almost they they almost do intend to make a change here they want to take a hard look look at Legacy in the next announcement almost like they will make a change that they will ban one card two cards it might be grief and then there in lies that if they do make that change why didn't they two things why didn't they just make it now why didn't they just want to change anything now they're having this very similar approach to Modern rizon 3 which I think is a very valid argument but also based on what people are saying if we do agree that grief is going to be the card that gets banned in modern or sorry in Legacy why now do we continue to have cards in modern that are so busted that they need to be banned in Legacy ragavan grief that are still active play patterns in modern that lead to negative feelings in a game negative games non games why do we still have these play patterns in modern modern is a good place right now but that's as the format is being explored if we end up in a modern metag game where grief is still at the top I will always scream to the Moon I don't care if Mill is the second most played deck in the format if grief is still at the top of the modern metag game after everything settles we have a problem that card has fundamentally been a problem in every format it has been legal in forget Commander they have bigger fish to fry and constructed formats grief has been a continuous problem it leads to terrible play patterns and I don't think this card should be legal in any format clearly it was a mistake Fury was probably a mistake as well but when it comes to Banning we probably should have just banned grief first we honestly probably should have just banned grief first so oh well that is my kind of big uh big takeaway from this BNR and mppy that they kind of address it here but that is where we're going to see those play patterns kind of play out another The Timeless Format interesting part about this article that I thought was really funny uh was in Timeless where they're like so let's read this through here uh another format that I I like playing because it's got fetches I'm I'm a bit of a elitist like that but if historic picked up some new toys uh from mon rizes 3 Timeless got the whole Toy Box dumped on it we're seeing big shakeups in the format including both the expected surge of ratos decks including uh inspired by Fury and grief but also a host of new decks older favorites like show Andel and domain are still around but at lower numbers there's a lot of lot going on in Timeless right now none of it is remotely Fair which I'm happy they're addressing but so far it seems fairly balanced I mean there's a high bar for restriction in Timeless and uh nothing is threatening in that way so this is a format where they are restricting things it's kind of similar to Vintage in that way so they haven't seen anything that needs to be restricted and I think they're going to approach it from that angle of cards NE not necessarily be needing to be banned but maybe being restricted so we could see the Restriction of grief restriction of Fury whatever it might be but it's kind of funny that they just straight out say there's a lot going on in Timeless and none of it is remotely fair and I think that's what they want they want this kind of vintage like playground for newer magic players um on the arena environment in the standard environment that have these cards that are delving into historic delving into historic brawl delving into um what's the other format here Alchemy yeah delving into these formats on Arena exploring Timeless exploring the real interactions that shake up magic as a format not just in the rotating formats but we start to see very powerful established mechanics come to these players and they want this to be that playground so I think it's kind of funny in that aspect I think Timeless is one of those things where they will be able to manage pretty actively they have a lot of active user data to uh kind of fill through and see what's broken but I thought it was Closing Thoughts interesting to see that in multiple scenarios they've talked about how they want modern Horizon 3 to play itself out especially in modern they see Peru T modern Horizon 3 just around the corner they want to see how that plays out as well in terms the top decks but especially with them dangling a carrot over Legacy I think that can be frustrating to a lot of a lot of Legacy players here and ultimately you know what I'm extrapolating from it is that why again we have these busted cards in Legacy that are still and in the modern format I don't know time will tell we'll see how that ultimately lands out but that is the mo uh the June 24th 2024 BNR no changes but is that really a good thing
