a special prosecutor declared on Friday that Georgia's lieutenant governor Bert Jones will not be prosecuted for his role in the former US president Donald Trump's attempt to rig the election Jones a GOP state senator in 2020 was one of the 16 fake electors who signed a document saying that Trump had won Georgia which was sent to the US National Archives and Records Administration the current US leader Joe Biden defeated Trump in the state by 11,779 votes in 2022 Jones won the position of lieutenant governor for Georgia fton County district attorney fonnie Willis had initially looked into Jones as part of a larger investigation into Trump's efforts which led to the filing of criminal charges against Trump a few electors and other friends however in 2022 a Fulton County Court disqualified Willis from looking into to Jones in particular because she had attended an event supporting Jones's opponent the judge presiding over the case at the time Robert seaer MC Bernie described Willis's Choice as a what are you thinking moment after other local prosecutors in the state were unwilling to take up the probe Peter scandalis the head of Georgia's prosecuting attorney's Council took over it in April he declared on Friday that he had closed the case after coming to the conclusion that Jones's acts did not warrant further investigation or further actions in a statement announcing his judgment he said that he found the conduct and involvement of Senator Jones as an elected representative to be reasonable and not criminal in nature prosecuting attorney's councel added that Senator Jones's involvement and actions during the relevant times were within the purview of his duties as a senator to address constituent concerns and his voting as an alternate elector on December 14th 2020 was the consequence of his Reliance on legal Scholars and attorneys advice Willis has only brought criminal charges against a small number of the fictitious electors in Georgia for their acts in 2020 on Friday the lawsuit's presiding judge dismissed a few of the criminal accusations brought against Trump but the majority of the case is still pending
