Introduction hello I'm Dr Ronda Johnson today is Sunday July 28th 2024 today I'm doing an update on the leria outbreak in the United States while since my July 21st video last week there's more information to share on this leria outbreak it has Outbreak Update now spread to 13 states there have been 34 cases and 33 people have been hospitalized now there have been two deaths fortunately no new fatalities now most of the leria cases are in New York and Maryland but other states which have one to two cases that have been confirmed have uh are Minnesota Missouri Wisconsin Illinois Indiana Georgia Virginia New Jersey North Carolina and Massachusetts now the Maryland Department of Health has identified at least one source of leria in Delhi meets the USDA the Department of Agriculture said that borsh head ready to eat liver worst produced between June 11th and Borsh Head July 17th with a 44 day shelf life has been recall this follows the detection of leria bacteria in a sample of unopen liver worst product now the B's head company has promptly issued a recall of over 207,000 207,000 lbs of liver Works uh and other sliced deli meats and cheeses according to a recent announcement from the US Department of Agriculture now the boardheads company is also requiring additional uh recalling additional deli meat products that are beyond the liver work that's different kinds of hand baloney beef salami things that were produced on the same line and on the same day as the liver wors and may have been contaminated with leria now more bad news about leria Veggie Recall folks there has been a recall of vegetables from an Ohio farm for possible leria contamination these vegetables were sold at Walmart Aldi Kroger and Shop and Save stores and Kentucky New York Ohio Pennsylvania and West Virginia the leria contamination could impact cucumbers green beans uh squash zucchini mustard greens parsley and various varieties of peppers they were sold under the name freshire f r s h i r e farms and w r farms wires Farms now I want to say that leria contamination in the past has occurred in ice cream cantaloupes peaches packaged fresh salads hot dogs deli meats and even Frozen fully cooked chicken because the steria bacteria can survive refrigeration and even freezing now the CDC does recommend that you heat your deli meats to high temperature before eating them now folks if you have Precautions bought any of these products you should check with your store where you purchase them to see if they sold any of the recalled product you should throw away any unused product that you might have in your refrigerator use good hand washing and wipe down all contaminated surfaces folks it's time to clean and disinfect everything in your refrigerator if you've purchased that stuff it's probably not a bad idea anyway because leria can spread to the surfaces in the refrigerator now I'll include the link to the CDC website and the uh Bor head recall website now what about the symptoms of leria they can include fever kills nausea diarrhea muscle aches and fatigue now if the infection spreads to your nervous system it may also include a stiff neck confusion loss of balance or seizures References pregnant women are at increased risk for this leria infection that risk includes pregnancy loss and premature birth and newborn babies born with leria face a life-threatening infection people 65 and older are also at higher risk now leria can be easily treated with antibiotics now I'm going to include the references and also you may want to check out my July 21st video for more information take care folks and be well
