cdv's Chief political correspondent vashi capelos good morning vashi what will the mood be at this Retreat is Trudeau facing an unhappy caucus I think they're pretty uh used to the feeling that they've had over the last year which is that they fully acknowledge and are aware of exactly what you just laid out sort of what the uh party is facing and in particular the Prime Minister when it comes to the electorate I think what's shifted particularly over the last week is is what you mentioned the breakdown of the deal with the NDP and then what I think behind the scenes will have an even larger consequence and that's the resignation of the campaign director Jeremy bradhurst he wasn't just the campaign director he also did that in 2019 he was a very close adviser in the prime minister's office one of the two essentially closest two or three closest people to the prime minister in his office so his uh resignation I think for my conversations over the weekend with a variety of liberals has sent a lot of shock waves and sort of questions about what their Strate is moving forward particularly heading into the possibility of an early election so I I don't know exactly what the mood will be like but I do think that there as you said will be a lot of questions for the Prime Minister and for the team around him about strategy going forward now Mark Carney uh will be speaking to the caucus vashi uh does this fuel more speculation I mean there's already a ton of speculation Renee I don't know if it necessarily fuels more but it keeps it going I mean to remind our viewers that at the beginning of the summer there was uh after that byelection loss in Toronto that you mentioned there was a ton of speculation not really clamped down on by the prime minister's office or his answers to questions that Mark Carney would be replacing chrisa Freeland in the portfolio of Finance those rumors were allowed to be you know circulating all summer it sounds like the conversations that were happening behind the scenes didn't come to fruition but now he's back to talk to them my guess is uh he still wants to be associated with the party he still wants sort of one arm in as he thinks about his own future and the possibility that he may run to replace Justin Trudeau if the Prime Minister steps aside in his capacity as leader of the liberal party but I I would be highly surprised if he did decide to enter into cabinet uh given the you know the current iteration of the party and and what they face but hey stranger things have happened uh now mean time the leader of the block is trying to leverage the moment uh vashy what can can you tell us well who can blame him he has all the leverage now uh the NDP have ripped apart in the words of jug meet sing their agreement to keep the Liberals in power in exchange for a host of policy initiatives and now the Liberals have to look to other partners in order to stay in power because the goal is of course to give yourself as much time as possible if you are the Liberals in order for lowering interest rates and the lower rate of inflation to take hold among Canadians for their economic kind of circumstances at an individual level to improve so that uh the political context around the Prime Minister and the Liberals is diluted a bit or diffused a little bit so people aren't as anxious or angry toward them that will take a really long time in order to buy time they've got to look to who else can support them in their big confidence votes things like the budget or the fall economic statement should Parliament you know stay on track and resume next week the block is a natural Ally on a number of subjects less naturally so on others but you know the the leader of the block will be able to leverage a lot you would think for people in Quebec for the kinds of policies that he wants to see pursued uh because the Liberals sort of can give him that leverage can go say okay we have a lot of stuff for Quebec that we're willing to do in order to stay in power it's kind of a small price to pay in the views of liberals and so I would look ahead to them leaning on the Block uh quite a bit and at times even on the NDP to remain in power interesting all right cdv's vashy pellos reporting in Ottawa thanks FY
