Vancouver stranger attack: Suspect charged with murder and aggravated assault

charges now laid in a pair of horrific random attacks in downtown Vancouver one person was killed another suffered life-altering injuries our Alysa tibo is live outside Provincial Court where the accused made a court appearance today Alyssa yeah Chris with those charges now laid we can tell you that Brendan Colin McBride is facing one count of second degree murder one count of aggravated assault we've also learned the 70-year-old man who was killed yesterday Francis leaport now VPD is still learning more about him they're not sure at this point if he has an NEX of kin and the surviving victim at this stage not being named both men attacked on the streets yesterday morning 34-year-old Brendan Colin McBride of White Rock accused of killing one man and cutting off the hand of another in what police believe are two unprovoked stranger assaults he has undergone surgery his hand has been reattached he obviously has a very long road to recovery the attacks happened downtown Wednesday morning a 56-year-old man maimed near a cathedral near Richards and dunsmure and at the Queen Elizabeth theater nearby a 70-year-old man stabbed to death identified as Francis David leaport we believe he's a longtime Vancouver resident by all count somebody who was um well known um and and and liked uh in the community McBride was arrested on habitat Island in Olympic Village on probation after being convicted of a 2023 assault in White Rock and he's had more than 60 documented contacts with police sources confirm to Global News he has severe mental health struggles Thursday morning a Vancouver resident laid a single bouquet of flowers for laort and I just felt this man shouldn't have had his life just taken away and forgotten so this is the smallest gesture I can give him sadness also mixed with anger hardworking innocent uh members of society have to actually deal with this type of stuff they can't live their lives fully and I think that's a that's a shame VPD stats show there has been a decrease in violent stranger attacks since they peaked in 2021 but not stopped completely and in just over 2 years four people have been killed downtown allegedly at the hands of strangers I can talk about how crimes going down all day long and I'd be the first person to say I'm Jared as well um yesterday's events were incredibly horrific all right Alyssa what is next for the accused so Chris McBride's appearance happened this afternoon about 3:00 he was reminded in custody his next court appearance will happen September 18th Chris all right Alysa TBO reporting in Vancouver thank you Alyssa
