Scott Frost is Dying uh but uh I I wouldn't call this today's STP top story but this is the first thing we're going to talk about today because I wanted to you know just push it out of the way first an article from CBS Sports yesterday that we mentioned during the crossover Scott Frost Dying For chance to coach after growing older and wiser from disappointing Nebraska tenure and then I read the story in a little bit more detail after the crossover yesterday and I thought okay that's what the headline says but is there evidence in here that he has grown older and wiser nope you be the judge Jos okay here are some quotes from our uh our now departed prodigal son uh quote for the first time in my life I don't know what's next the former Nebraska coach told Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports I'm dying to get back in not I'm dying I'm dying to get back in uh then the article goes through uh not exactly the details of of why Scott Frost struggled at Nebraska but more so Nebraska's inconsistency and Leadership and things of that nature that of course did pop up a couple weeks ago regarding Trev Alberts older and wiser people do generally blame their problems on everyone else quote this is bad to say to a media guy but I've never wanted to be a Critic Frost said I've wanted to be in the arena the arena to which Frost is referring is the coaching perspective over breakfast at a Scottdale eery Frost agreed to discuss the past the state of the game and its future it's clear that he will be back coaching even if that means working his way back up the ladder Frost is comfortable living in Scottdale with his three young children he has another kid whoa don't talk about family he had another kid though I I don't remember the third one he had time to plan uh the family prefers location so much that it might be hard moving back to a small college town the NFL remains an option as well in the end though Frost has 15 million reasons to take his time quote my whole life I was a little league player and a high school player and then a college player and then an NFL player and then a graduate and then a position coach then a coordinator and then a head coach it was on a trajectory and I knew what was next um and then Frost said quote about the opportunities I know this there's some good coaches out there I'm a good coach I belong doing it I just don't know for sure where that's going to be right now if the right head coach job comes along I'd take it if the right coordinator job comes I'll take it um as a coach Nick Sabin said it frost said it used to be a 45 45 week a year job now it's a 52 week a year job you're scouting other teams players recruiting year round raising money for nil year round the part I love about college football is taking an 18-year-old kid and watching him leave as 22-year old man who has life figured out you played a part in that um and then he talked about UCF a little bit coaching is what I want to do frost said it's what I'm good at it's what I love you think the Steelers with the Immaculate Reception said we really got lucky in the ball ticked off somebody's foot and Franco Harris caught it we shouldn't have won Frost said whatever it take whatever it takes you win those were the quotes from Mr Scott Frost in the story from CBS Sports now Josh I'll allow you to be the first judge on this did you get the sense that Scott Frost has come to grips with how the situation at Nebraska went down and that he is sort of mentally rehabbed from his uh from his tumultuous days in Lincoln that he is he now understands his shortcomings what he's good at what he's not good at and that he is now prepared to be a better person and better Coach wherever he may end up with a job next did you get that sense at all are we being honest we are this is an honest show it's the show of honesty no quite frankly he sounds lazier than ever kind of yeah I mean I I'm I'm in Scottsdale you want to hire me come hire me he's begging people for a job this sounds like his agent called Dennis Dodd's like hey I mean that's exactly what Happ can you do a profile on him he's not going to talk about anything but if you could do a profile on him and just get his name back in the cycle that'd be really great for me his agent that is exactly what happened he um like like he's talking about even in the story where he's begging somebody to like hey I'm still here I I can coach remember UCF that went really well how does it come up that hey I like you got the sense from him even in this story where once again and he is trying to make himself marketable for head coaching opportunities around the country that he he is lamenting the idea that coaching is no longer a 45 week a year job it's a 52 week a year job and you have to do it all the time he's clearly not comfortable with that idea he likes living a life he Li he likes living in Scottdale all that that implies absolutely he he loves like he likes balance in his life but I I I don't think he's come to grips with the idea that what you don't have when you are a college football head coach or really when you're a college football coach of any sort is balance in your life you have to achieve it the best you possibly can but it's just not tenable like so if that's what you are shooting for as a person then I maybe college football coaching just isn't the right job for you asan Joe has nailed it on our YouTube stream how long until we'll see Frost coaching Arizona high school team I think that's a 45 we a year job I Selfawareness think that's a perfect gig for him you can get a little bit of that work life balance but he's still a part of the game he's still watching kids grow and mature into better players and he's sending them off to be better men yeah do do you get the sense from this story that um I mean one of the things that that probably came up with frost during his time here was like self-awareness right mhm you kind of have to understand what you're good at and what you're not good at did did you get the sense from the CBS sports article that I just mostly read you right there that he has gained an element of self-awareness and has a clear understanding of what he's good and what he's not good at is your answer no no not not not a lick and and and so if your answer is no that makes sense because it came up during the article many many times hey look I'm a good college football coach we were always we we sat here and we wondered for a for years now for a year plus like what who's going to get the first story and is he going to spill the beans on Nebraska football and and like what happened and will like does his time away from the sport and his desire to get back into the sport allow him to um allow him to say UPF front hey this is where I fell short regardless of like like there there's a couple sides of this number one like it's it's delusional delusional if you don't take some sort of personal responsibility in this but on the second part even if you thought you didn't work at Nebraska only because of the situation that was going on around you I wouldn't want to tell people that right I wouldn't want tell people that I think what you would want to project is hey look like I could have done a lot of things better I could have done a lot of things better um I made some mistakes and um I feel like this time away from it and my reflection back on it has made me understand that what it takes to actually do this successfully and that's like for the record when when he got fired and we thought man he's going to be you know he's he's going to end up somewhere and he'll be a good coach somewhere and I believe he's a really really great offensive mind um but man I would just really like to see a little bit and maybe maybe there's more to this and maybe it's coming still I don't know um oh do you think it's like a three piece story may I I if I'm an employer if I'm a university if I'm a head coach looking to hire a coordinator or staff member of some sort I'm looking for the guy you know what what I had heard about him was that yeah I don't know he he doesn't always have the greatest self-awareness and um he kind of does he kind of does what he wants to do right and he you know there's there's that piece of him so what I'd be looking for is for him to take a little bit of responsibility for what happened at Nebraska and it's like once again we as Nebraskans can sit here and we can say like yeah there were some there was some messed up stuff from a leadership perspective um and you know like he didn't have the greatest boss while he was here that guy who's writing a book now like he he that guy was not present covid happened circumstances could have been a factor in a lot of what happened with Scott Frost tenure that I I believe that but I also think you have to say hey look even with those circumstances maybe I could have maybe I you know could have adapted and figured out something a little bit different rather than you know what ended up happening I just like to see a little bit of personal responsibility he will not get a meaningful job in the sport without showing a little bit of Contrition and there's not that in this article there's a lot of finger pointing there's a lot of well I don't want to talk about this and this and this but I I'll tell you how great the times were at UCF when I fell ass backwards into Talent did you did you see what happened happened it was it wasn't like when Franco Harris miraculously caught that ball like that happened for a reason man every time he talks he steps in his own crap like it's how' this guy get into Stanford by the way he's just I I I I I said this right away um like he is a genuinely smart guy I I I I I really believe that um but as uh Doug's said or no no no let's see uh oh yeah Charles Attitude says on YouTube here uh Frost's problem was never aptitude it's always been attitude it's always been attitude that your perspective on things um and sometimes I think where you come from and frost he mentioned in the story in his sort of lineage of football kind of always been the Golden Boy not that he's had stuff handed to him but he's had to work for some things but he had a leg up on a lot of people because where he came from and what he did and um that he is a smart guy and so he got he got in some advantageous situations and ran up the ladder really really quick as a young man and um I like you see a lot of coaches now and their perspective is I had to spend two decades at some ni school or a high school before I got the opportunity and I and when I did those things I had to learn I had to do everything I had to I had to drive the bus I had to um you know manicure the field I had to do class checks in in classrooms and stuff like that he's not interested in the details he he's he's not interested in the details I I remember talking to Trev right at his first Big 10 media days and that was when the whole you know everyone wanted his opinion on what Frost was and I asked Trev I said is are you a detail oriented guy you know and just kind of let him go and he was like yeah and then he went off he he he spun off into this thing about how coaches think they want um autonomy but what they need is a little bit of structure and I I think in this situation we're dealing with a person who values his autonomy so much not to say that it can't work but he values his autonomy so much more than you know than than the greater good I think that that's that's kind of my read on it and so yeah I didn't did not get uh did not get what the article told us we were going to get out of that sadly yeah yeah sure would have liked it to have been different and not that I want like a big bombshell or anything from him I just want him to be honest with us and himself like it didn't work and like that's okay to a certain extent like a relatively young guy I have a lot of emails in my Equitable Bank inbox right now oh I bet I I I hear you I I I I I see the emails okay I see the emails there's a through line to all of them there's there's oh yeah yeah there's there's a through line to all of them okay uh John emails in on the equal Bank H box hi John for us say teams don't win due to luck but the entire time he was at Nebraska he talked about needing luck he just opened it back up to piling on him again yeah that that's the other thing like I don't even think he realized what he was [Laughter] doing ah again he doesn't have any self-awareness I I just feel like I I kind of feel bad but I kind of don't like um because like I said it's it's sort of it's sort of potential and opportunity that's that's just squandered a little bit by perspect by lack of perspective like I said he's a smart guy I think he's an offensive you know I think he knows what he is doing when it comes to football he just doesn't he's not interested in the details and he doesn't really want to um doesn't really want to work on it that hard I he knows what he T I think he knows what it takes you know and that's what makes it even more disappointing right so I think what we're talking about is a person here who like you know who is was so talented and so smart um but it's it's it's squandered because like I said of of like perspective that's sad like that's a sad story very this this is a sad story actually I would like to hear that oh you got to you got to recruit hard you got to you got to attend meetings you gotta got to do this you got to do that I know that now and I'm prepared to do that if only any school in Arizona had been hiring recently and look like this is all to say like he he might still end up getting a job somewhere because of the AFF forementioned like aptitude like I think he's like I said I think he's got all of that um and it it also doesn't mean that it won't work you know if he puts the right people around him and if it's the right situation and all that stuff but like for for a job as Nebraska now has a coach who lives it and breathes it and considered it considers it to be a blessing that he has to be the Nebraska football coach all of the time all the time and there's there's good things that come with it there's bad things that come with it there are and you have to be willing to live with some of the bad stuff and that's what I don't think but like there there's I don't know what the number is but there's a lot of jobs around the country where it's just like that there's no hiding here you are that person all the time that's when you go to the grocery store and that's even to a certain extent when you're in the privacy of your own home like you you you just have to be it he want he doesn't want to be it all the time no there's places where you don't have to be it all the time that those places might be perfect for him yeah so disappointing I guess is the is the is what I got out of that and certainly not what I was expecting when I read the when I read the headline yesterday that's for sure all right um any any more thoughts on that we'll take him we get some emails on the other side we'll come back more the counter haer show on 1620 to zel live from the host coffee Studio this is 1620 the zone
