featured St Petersburg SCA and I'm going to try and get this corrected I know I'm going to get it wrong versus Manor ER I know I got it wrong so I'm going to bring in former Montreal Canadian Scout under the Bob gainy administration of course with six sports news and the recruits Draft Cast podcast grma KAG what's going on yeah don't don't ask me to pronounce that any better Tony that sounded pretty good all right okay let's get to it I I think a lot of people have seen maybe a couple of highlights uh unless you haven't been on social media but I know Montreal Canadians um fans and members of the media covering the te I mean everyone was all over the Dei do highlights earlier today uh he played his first game he started on a third line with evi ketov centering the line um there's a lot more there's a lot of players who got more minutes than him and we're going to get to that a little bit later uh it was what four or five days ago that his coach following that uh Tournament of four teams where Demi do was playing with the u23s said uh you know what he'll start the first game with us Grant you look more than comfortable to me especially that first period he uh uh I got some highlights there and when we show them you'll notice like most of them are from the first period he he could have had three or four points with a little bit of luck so you know right off the bat first period uh out of the gates uh started like listed as the third line but started the game you know that line um I think you know coach IDE wants to match him up against kind of like slaf you know ease him in a bit put him with the with the uh NHL Pro and ketov but try to uh match him up against other teams uh third lines you know bottom lines as opposed to their top lines but I don't think he has to protect him at all like he's he's going to I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being top 10 in points this year with with uh in the KHL he's just I mean we even saw it today despite the lack of ice time that he just creates uh all the time he um he picked up an assist in a 54 loss in overtime you know what without further Ado why don't we get to that highlight package that you put together I think Grant it's about four minutes long is that correct yeah yeah all right so we're playing it right here but for those who'll be listening and won't be watching we'll be describing uh there's Demi do right there number 91 right dangling the way he did yeah brought it in and uh went right to the front of the net then he got a shot on goal that was uh like first shift so welcome to the KHL Rook I know he's played like two games one year and four the other but really this is his official rookie season in the KHL it a beautiful pass you're also seeing a lot of confidence with the puck right it's he's a guy who wants the puck you know sometimes rookies they break in and they break into a pro league and you know they they're a little shy this guy wants the puck H yeah and he tries to make plays like he loses you know there you'll see it in a couple of these where he loses it or whatever but uh you know he uh he's got he's got the uh the nerve to do it and the confidence to do it and here was his assist right here beautiful shot top corner but he got the you know the primary assist but he kept uh he kept look at the you know you did you have a protractor in school yes I definitely did yes well that was that was like a pro he did the pivot just perfectly there this is his that was the play that just blew me look at that look at that you know what coming down the left wing if we could stop this or not I don't know if we could stop this or not but anyway it be great if you could go back on that one yeah if I'd like to go back look at what he does okay he grabs the puck at his blue line he get he get he you know he enters the offensive zone with a lot of speed he banks the puck off the board so that it goes behind the defender and he gets by him he takes the puck to his back end and the goalie makes a save look at that once again look at that his IQ is off the charts it really is like it's not just the skill but uh he's uh he's creating all the time look at the the pivots and then back between his legs with it and over and another good chance these are all from the first period like he easily could have had three or four points in the first there again the spin One Way strong on the boards he protects the puck real well he's Dynamite along the boards and then here again just missed you know he's uh first period his first period was phenomenal for an 18-year- old kid and uh just uh chance after chance look at this he's taking chances where if he gets stripped at the offensive Blue Line it could lead to a breakway or a Counterattack the other way and yet he takes those chances which shows an incredible amount of confidence with the puck one number two also Confidence from the coach that here's a player who's not afraid to tricep because obviously his coach is not going to uh not going to punish him for it oh you can't you know you don't uh you don't quell uh skill and creativity like that you have to embrace it and uh and here's uh you know on the four check this is a second goal he didn't get a point on it but the four check was a big part of why CU Neta pop that goal in so secondary you know I uh unofficial assist he could have had too and again you know he's so he protects a puck very well he he uses his lower body gets the wide stats as you noticed on that just saw that Grant he used his uh he used his legs yes he does he's got such strength uh lower body strength is is really good I like this play too he's re just so slick along the boards you know he makes uh protects the puck well and makes smart smart plays again and again again there like his lower body strength it just uh he's already doing that against men so bodess very well for the future for this kid Crosby's lower body so strong too yeah similar similar uh in that regard there he stripped the puck and got the puck out front but uh guy didn't put it in see I like that one so much I showed it twice Tony the highlights I'm seeing I can't believe he only picked up one assist that tell you the truth I know they just you run out of superlatives after a while again almost uh you know that should have been a should have been a point there too so he uh he he kept uh he kept creating this is right at the end and there's a there's a u there's a skirmish that breaks out and you see that he sees that you know what his teammate needs a hand he goes in there right away picks up a guy no this guy look I think we saw we saw everything I mean we saw a guy who once again like you said a very very strong lower body a guy who protects the puck a guy who wants the puck a guy who likes to take chances a guy who likes to enter the offensive zone with the puck a guy who uh who who who who uh dang go um maybe we you know we could have saw a little bit more of the shot for a guy who had the who likes to have the puck on his tick as much as he does 14 players on the team had more ice time than his 14 minutes yeah 14 players yeah well like you're you're including defenseman are you yeah because typically defenseman get more ice but uh of course yeah he got third line ice and that's he got third line ice that's right basically you know 14 minutes is third line nice and that's fine although I have to say you know uh starting the uh overtime and not starting ketov and demidov I mean rotenberg it hearken back to the days when uh clo would start uh Byron and and Evans on the you know instead of Suzuki and carfield or what it's like what are you doing you know I think I I think I saw I think I saw RDS right about this but I think I saw somewhere that in possession of the puck uh he carried the puck and he covered about 400 uh for about 400 meters and that put him at number one on his team in terms of carrying the puck once again we're talking about a rookie here we're talking about a rookie playing with men usually rookies that play with men they're usually either scratches they're on the fourth line they get less than 10 minutes they don't want the puck what demid did today in his first pro game you know I'm not gonna say the most special players do that because the most special players probably score you know a goal or whatever but he could have easily had a goal in this game I mean he could have easily had a goal we're talking I wish that uh the highlights from mstat showed the replay of the that one Rush where he pounced off the boards cuz the goalie barely saved that like if that goes in Tony that's viral all day long because I mean it was an end 10 rush and came that close to scoring of course you don't see it you know on on Twitter because he didn't score but he came that close to scoring on that and it was but getting back to rotenberg he watches you know they they have that tournament the poov tournament and and uh KET or sorry uh demov is the captain of the U23 team and he scores that beautiful goal that we highlighted last week in OT that won it yeah rotenberg sees that like demov all throughout that tournament when it got to overtime he was just so Dynamic and then they turn around they go to overtime in their first game of the KHL regular season and they don't put him in Keta out it just it shocked me and they lost on the first shift surprise surprise they had a couple of you know they had their Evans and Byron and Russian Evans and Byron out there and they paid the price you know I he don't it'll change I think they're just trying to be a little conservative to start things off and not feed them too much but uh he's going to uh as the season goes along I think rotenberg will realize hey you know those two guys are are going to uh are going to carry it carry the mail and like it you know those stats I saw that all game he yeah Puck possession it's going to be something that and even at the NHL level Tony it's going to be high because he just he's just so slick and so smart and so elusive he'll uh he he'll put up really good Puck possession stats and just like Hudson you know like there uh there's some real entertainment coming up over the next year with the Canadians we we saw the uh by now I think everyone's seen the behind the scenes draft coverage which the Canadians were able to put out on on their haps TV and um you know Demi do was asked uh who he thinks he plays like and I I think he said there's a little bit of uh kerov or there's a little bit of um uh of keov and he also talked about the fact that he likes to uh you know use his shoulders uh to to to basically uh be Elusive and uh you know use his shoulders to PR pretend like he's going one way and go another and he says he gets that from Jack Hughes and to which Kus looked over at him and says you know who does that a lot Lane Hudson does that a lot and he said yeah yeah I know him I watched some of his videos and uh we kind of play alike but he plays defense and I play forward you know that in watching these videos it's funny eh and I could be wrong my my my my first reflex is to try and compare him to other Russian players that have played the game right and it's funny Grant I don't want to get carried away but I don't have a problem doing it there's so many good Russian greats when I watch him I almost feel like he's got a little bit of several of them he's got a little bit of several of them like today and I've never seen this before never seen this before and it's just a couple of videos here we just saw them right now it's just a couple of videos okay folks so don't be hard on me whether if you don't agree with my assessment I even saw a little bit of feder off saw a little bit of fed off yeah you know like he he wants the puck he can he can he can shoot but he can create he can playmake uh a little bit of protects the puck well like federov did protects the puck well like federov remember like when federov played Detroit with Scotty Bowman they used to play a great game of uh you know of of Puck possession right they used to play a great game of Puck possession federov was a guy that wanted the puck and not only wanted the puck he could actually keep the puck on his stick for an extended period of time demidov does that too does that too you know yeah yeah for sure we've got the play there that uh I think maybe it's the one the uh the replay okay yeah here it is look at how close he's you know for go back I want to see that again Watch this okay yeah the de and then and look look if we go back again the play is the play is you either shoot five hole or you take it to the back end right from there that's the play and he does a g and it just hits right underneath the glove actually more the arm it hits the uh it hits the wrist I think the left wrist right before the glove and we're talking inches if it goes underneath the wrist or over the wrist that's a goal it's a great stop by the goalie by the way it's a great stop he could have easily had a goal in his first uh Pro game oh that would have been like uh that would have just blown up Twitter that was his first shift right was it not second first yeah one of his first shifts of the game I I uh yeah I grant I was hosting uh leam on BPM Sports I think everyone knows by now check it 91.9 on your fm dial if you're in Montreal subscribe to their YouTube channel if you can and give us a watch and I'm on weekdays from 9:55 a.m. to 11:55 a.m. specifically and uh the game started five minutes after I was on air and I just I kept on looking on social media to see the highlights and if it seemed like it was a couple of minutes into my show that they showed that right away so I wouldn't be surprised if that was his first shift yeah it was right at the start of the game and it just that first period it just oh my goodness if he's going to be like this all year you know I really think he could be top 10 I wouldn't be shocked if he ends up top 10 in KHL scoring this year he just he's uh he's a special he's a special player so you expect the ice time to increase you know you're not worried about uh you know a coach just saying he'll start the season with us and then all of a sudden he won't you see him with SCA the entire season and you see him climbing the ladder oh for sure and they like the top scoring defenseman in uh KHL uh is out you know they have the top scoring defenseman and he he's out with injury Carolina Pick and uh he comes back it'll be just that much more Dynamic and you you'll see the they like to do five man units in Russian hockey and yeah you'll see you'll see the mo like the five he'll be one of the he'll be on the top unit and they'll be scoring bushel of goals metal ERG played really well like they're there'll be some you know like sohi teams like that that aren't very strong I could see them having three four or five point nights uh it's just I think he's going to really produce and and really uh stand out this year you know out of all the teams that could have drafted the demid doav you know the best scenario obviously was the Canadians because I know a lot of people are worried that Scott probably won't spend a lot of development time with demid do because they're going to lose him at the end of the year and he'll be a Montreal Canadian for next season but look uh Serge bab brav Nick bab bra's father as everyone knows is with SCA and I would imagine that he's he's going to make sure's he's going to be overseeing everything regarding demidov and he's going to make sure that demov is is is going to be able to get the development that he deserves there's no doubt in my mind yeah well you know it for whatever reasons uh um Rutenberg wasn't a big fan of mechkov he and you know they loaned him out each each year so the the thought was that he didn't like any young players but yeah they're uh they're really fond of of demov and he's going to be he's going to play all year and contribute big time to that team look it could be that the coach would like to go with a veteran heavy lineup he wouldn't be the first one and he wouldn't be the last one but then again and without piling on mechkov it could very well be uh that rodenberg um saw some of the things or heard some of the things that a lot of us did in the hockey world and that mitkov is usually not the most popular player with his teammates right yeah and he probably said you know what you know he'll be good but maybe all the other stuff that I'm gonna have to deal with maybe it just won't be worth it and look I don't know if that's true or not but he's he's he's he's a particular case in a locker room right he's and players that have talent um off the charts kind of talent sometimes they're they're different cats and maybe just Mech is a different cat period no for sure for sure no I think I think um um he's a bit individualistic and I I think that may have rubbed uh rotenberg the wrong way but uh demov is uh is a team guy it's been you know it's been documented and and shown in the past that he he he's not uh not selfish in any regard and I think mechkov maybe has to do a little bit of growing up and that'll that'll come I mean he's just a kid and he just you saw the stats that he put up every year like anointed Superstar and and he just got to do some maturing but uh I think demov is a little more mature at the same age and for that reason more of a team little more of a team guy at this point and that's why rotenberg is going to rely on him and uh keep him up with the team all year and I think his ice time will just grow just like slav ksky last year yeah I think you know Marty didn't throw him to the Wolves right away but as as he keeps producing and creating like like you saw that first period you want that uh 18 to 20 minutes a game uh he'll be putting up you know two three points a lot of games that's going to help you win so at the end of the day every coach wants to win and and dem's going to help him win based on what you saw um what are the differences that you can talk to us about KHL hockey and American Hockey League I mean we we obviously know the the size of the rink we also know that there's a lot of tremendously skilled players in Russia there's a lot of emphasis on you know Player Development the in the entire you know Russia Grassroots system and you'll find terrific sck handlers you'll find guys with a lot of skills in the KHL I would imagine maybe you'll find more physical players in the American Hockey League a little bit less skill but um what what you saw from demid off today what I'm getting at is if he was playing that game today in the American Hockey League instead of the KHL what differences would we have seen if any I don't think there'd be a lot of difference other than maybe he'd ended up with two or three points um that that skill is going to uh stand out at any level the smarts and the skill that he has uh I don't uh yeah I I agree with your assessment Tony I think that the kl's probably got a little more skill a little less grit I don't think demod it matters to demov like he can play any style you're not going to intimidate him because he's just so strong on his on his skates he's uh not going to get knocked down very often he's going to protect the puck well he's going to compete so uh I think he's dominant at the HL level if that's what he was playing right now yeah just as I think he was in the first period second period that line didn't uh they spent a lot of time in the the other team Zone and it's a team's home opener you know metaller played a very good game and deserve to win it actually so uh but second period they did not do much like none of those highlights I think I had one highlight that was from the second period and then in the third he picked it up again so they'll be e and flows as there is with any young player but um yeah it's I I think that it doesn't matter what level what league he's playing in he's going to create and uh and be dynamic I think Bob Harley was asked on BPM Sports on Martin L show um Demi do will be the most electrifying most spectacular uh most skilled player since and I think he mentioned Don Fus since Don Fus um Don Fus was a very good I love D Fus oh D Fus was uh very underrated player I thought at one point when he was at his Peak with the Canadians I thought he was a top 10 player in the league so if uh if demov ends up being a top 10 player in the league that that's not bad well if you go back to that team in uh 1993 that team that won the Stanley Cup uh obviously Vinnie Don Fus had a great year and Vinnie Don Fus had a couple of great years right after that too remember when they acquired Pier T Dan Fus and T put up great Seasons they had close to 100 points points but um you know that that team that won the cup in uh in 1993 um Brian Bellow scored 40 goals on that team and uh Vinnie Don Fu scored 39 and Mueller scored 37 um that's the last time I believe that a Montreal Canadian scored 40 goals and um last time that a that a Montell Canadians line scored a 100 too yeah D Fus and Bell speaking of a Montreal Canadians line how many points do you think the Montreal can how many goals do you think the Montreal Canadians line of Suzuki Coffield and slowski could score if they put them together on the power play because um the numbers obviously last year for the power play once again not very good numbers but a great opportunity this season to be able to improve on those numbers which obviously are very very beatable yeah well I mean it I assume that doc they're going to have doc centering the second unit with new hook and raw and the first unit has line a Hudson uh slavoski Suzuki and Coffield now I was looking at the stats the Habs uh last year in total scored 44 Power Play Goals um wow Suzuki yeah it was bottom seven bottom eight in the league uh Suzuki had 12 um Coffield and L for their careers per 82 games of average 12 uh they had mat feeding them the puck and not Cole Hudson with no disrespect for mat I think Cole Hudson's a better power play quarter Back Lane Hudson if he is there all year Lane Hudson did I say Cole yeah I think you did that's okay I would have like to have him too yeah no sorry about that Lan don't worry about it everyone knows I still I still got the the 2024 draft on my mind there I hear you I hear you Lane Hudson uh is um is going to uh set those guys up more and they've got line a right so there's more shooting options who do you cover you can't you can't uh last year was predictable that it seemed like matth passed it he either shot it yeah or passed it to Coffield just about every time well you're not gonna and people doubled up on Coffield with L out there with slavoski getting more confidence on his onetime and stuff and Hudson likely Lane Hudson likely feed him the puck more than mat yeah uh I mean I can see even if they only duplicate what they what the what they have in the past and and liones gets 12 Suzuki gets 12 and Coffield gets 12 uh slaf scored six Power Play Goals last year and he wasn't on the first unit for almost half you're right so if I can go through it Suzuki at 12 C field had nine that's 21 right and Sosi had six each that's 33 right mat had five that's 38 new hook had two that's 40 and the other four came one goal a piece from Gallagher Pearson Dvorak and Justin Baron that's incredible only 44 goals like you said Grant I'm gonna say this I hope I really hope that Coffield and lony are on the ice at the same time on the power play because like you said if when you know teams were doubling up on Coffield and they were taking away his shot and I know both of them like to line up on the same spot like the line up on the left side because they're right-handed shot but I think you could put actually one by the boards and I think you could put one by the point but if you have them both on the power play now all of a sudden teams won't know who to watch anymore no that's right but I think it it's very realistic that those three each get 12 because uh L and and Coffield have averaged 12 this is if everybody's is healthy I've averaged 12 per 82 games I think SLA can go from six to n that's not unrealistic at all because again he's going to have Hudson and those other guys will be covered and they'll get it more to SLA too so you like there who do you cover and uh there's always going to be somebody open and SLA I think scores nine probably and Hudson he was top 25 in uh Power Play Goals in NCAA last year he had seven in 38 games I don't see why he can't score five he's the quarterback right he's the quarterback that everyone's been talking about the quarterback that's been necessary over the last couple years they found their guy he's the guy it's it's Lane Hudson so there there's 50 goals now the entire power play last year scored 44 if the first unit can score 50 plus and I think that's a very realistic number because all of these guys uh save line a are still improving as players and they and then they'll have Hudson quarterbacking it I think they that the first unit can score 50 this year now if you can get 10 from Doc new hook raah mat on the second unit maybe ghouly Jacky uh you know whoever I think they go to we've discussed that before but they might go 2D on the second on the second unit I probably think they will you know what if they score 60 instead of 44 and that's 16 goals more if every other goal in the power play of those 16 leads to a win you have eight wins more that's 16 points the the Canadians led the league last year in one goal losses I think it was 27 yeah if you can get half of those uh you know with with 16 to 20 more power making the difference in half of those they're they're a playoff team last year so I really I really think the Canadians uh are in the are in the hunt this year they'll be in the playoff contention right up till the trade deadline and it'll be interesting at that time to see if if they are and I think they will be I I'd be very surprised if uh Saar especially gets gets dealt you talked about Lane Hudson before and still some have some deals as to whether or not he's going to make the team I believe he will make the team I believe I believe he'll be on the team to start the season if he's on it and he's the he's he's a he's he's kind of like demidov he wants the puck he demands the puck and when he has the puck he goes out of his way to try stuff with the puck he's not worried about turning the puck over he's going to end up he's going to end up getting the Canadians a lot of power play yeah for sure that too he'll draw them and then he'll uh you know he'll set up the goal or score it in the on the power play if the Canadians make the playoffs this year Tony and they uh you know demov season ends it's always sooner imagine them being in the playoffs and demov coming over and joining them for the playoffs that would be un if they do make only way can happen though right it's the only way it can happen it's a distinct possibility if you know if they make the playoffs that you'll see damadol imagine I could just the the Bell Center would be just magical if that happens you know uh I really hope it does it'd be great maybe that's a year away but maybe not so it's uh lots of anticipation uh going into this season for those who don't follow you on the application for firly known as Twitter and I suggest that they do I saw one of your tweets earlier today and why don't we end the show with this Nick boobo told you something two years ago what did he tell you oh he told me that uh that demidov is the real one and he demid caught his attention several years ago when demidov was like 12 years old well I I I'm guessing at that Tony okay like that was a response to another guy tweet but I mean demov was playing demov played for Russia at the Helena at 15 years of age and you know you don't play for Russia at 15 years of age at the Helen no so he's been a Phenom since and I mean his dad was on him you know probably was at nine they were did their jaws were dropping this kid he's been a Phenom obviously all his life he's he's just a natural Talent so yeah I wouldn't doubt
