[Music] what did this season teach you about yourself oh so much um I think the season taught me that it's okay to have a voice and that I think oftentimes as women we're really afraid to be too Stern because we might look a certain way and we have to be timid but then you don't want to be too timid because people will walk all over you um and so this season I really learned my voice and finding that balance of like being knowing what I want and and speaking to that and and not just like rolling over for anybody yeah oh I love that so growing up what was the General guidance given to you about dating was it like no boyfriends to suddenly why aren't you married or was it go out and go forth like what you know it's funny that you said the first part of that because yes growing up you know my parents were very traditionally Vietnamese and so my mom basically was like no boyfriends nothing no touching no hugging and then one day it was like wait why aren't you married like well you're confusing me now um so yeah they're definitely really strict about about dating and and and being in love in general just because my mom has had a tough time too um being that she's divorced so she's a lot more cautious with love um but you know now that I'm I'm kind of an adult and she was able to see me on on Joey's season and I think that really helped her kind of be like oh like Jen is like independent she's figuring it out like she's she's dating she's figuring out what she wants and she knows how to do do that so it was nice for her to see that side of me and now I think she has a lot more trust in me with that yeah you let your mom watch Joey season did you watch it with her like when you just like C you know not that anything bad happened but you know I was going to say what happened was there something no no no but I just like I don't like watching shows with my parents so oh my goodness that's true no so my mom was in Boston right now and I was in Miami cuz I was finishing up school still I was doing school while the show was airing um and so no we did not watch it together I guess that would be kind of weird a little weird but yeah she loved it she was like the biggest Bachelor fan ever the second like I was on the screen so she's been so supportive I can't wait for her to see this season me too me too so did you when you did start to date did you also get the pressure to date I will call them the acceptable Asian professions you know like doctor lawyer engineer or was it you know find whoever yeah I think you know my mom is really open-minded in in term terms of that because she understands that there's a lot more to a person than their career path and their profession and all that really matters is that they're able that they're passionate about something and that they're able to provide in some sense you know um and be a man and I think that's like what's most important for my mom but yeah there were times of course growing up that she's like oh do you think you'd like this doctor or this lawyer but she's never like too pushy with it ever okay I was I was curious just because I was gonna ask if you had advice on being able to deprogram from that right because it is you know societal thing certainly and you've got a a very uh diverse group of professions on this for sure no I agree I think growing up I mean it's a cultural thing I think sometimes you know with um Asian parents just wanting the best for their kids um but I think in general I stay so open-minded and it helps my mom kind of stay openminded too okay I'm gonna make my Mom watch this interview and be like look mom so what is the first time if ever you felt represented on screen oh that's a good question um honestly not until crazy Rich Asians did I really see myself or see my story like on screen because in that movie um she speaks Chinese I believe um and so it was nice to see like a bilingual family shown on screen and like a love story you know so something like that I've never seen before and and that was really beautiful to see because oftentimes growing up we saw Asians as a side character to fill some kind of stereotype we were nerdy we were the punk we were just like the dumb one or or something um and so I never really saw myself in that but being able to see someone just be a lead in their own story and not have it um not have it like to like fill some sort of stereotype really meant a lot what shows were you watching where they were the punks for me it's always like the the nerdy you know good kids I don't know there's always some some kind of crazy I don't know okay that's that's fair what are your non-negotiable XS non-negotiable XS um for me well well like off the bat like chewing with her mouth open is like the world I'm like what are you doing but also just someone who is really insecure is not it for me I've done that before and and I need someone who's very secure in themselves and can be happy for like my successes as well because I've dealt with that where like my like partner wasn't happy for me um so that was a struggle and some other non-al a someone who like isn't listening to me I don't know why I've dealt with this so much but like I feel like sometimes when I'm talking to someone they they just respond to respond and they go on to talk about themselves so someone who's selfish is just GH no not for me that is my time thank you so much it was so nice to meet you I'm so excited for the season [Music]
