A federal investigation is now underway after a deadly incident killed two workers in the will and brake shop at Delta Tech ops on Tuesday. So far, we have learned that the incident involved will components that were being disassembled for maintenance. 11, the lives Molly Oaks spoke with a former airline mechanic to get some insight on how this could have happened. It's a real tragedy. That's John Goa, a former National Transportation Safety Board member and former airline mechanic. Oftentimes you'll see tires come in with the pieces of the rim missing where they cracked and broke off, the tire still maintains its integrity, but it's been deflated. In this case, it appears that we've got a bunch of shrapnel coming off this tire and if that's the case, then they've, they're traveling at a good rate of speed when the tire comes apart. The incident that left two people dead and another injured happened at Delta Tech ops Tuesday around 5 a.m. It could only happen in one of two ways and one is that they fail to follow the proper procedures. And the second reason would be if the tire had become uh weakened from repeated landings and cracked and, and burst, which is a very rare event. It's more, more likely that the procedures were not followed and catastrophic event occurred. According to its website Delta Tech ops facility handles maintenance, repair and overhaul for the airliner. A source close to the investigation tells us the accident was a result of several factors with the wheel components malfunctioning with at least 200 pounds of air in that tire or nitrogen in that tire, any failure to the wheel have, it's going to disintegrate that rapidly and it's gonna shatter. So that means small pieces traveling at a pretty good high rate of speed. And that's typically the, the uh causes of most of the injuries. Adding that shrapnel can be fatal.
