[Music] hey what's going on this is the Saturday down south podcast I am Conor oera will uh it's a good thing that the SEC has UT see what I did there see that yeah pick your poison whichever UT you want to call UT um the SEC calls Tennessee UT not Texas but let's just say it's a good thing that the SEC has UT because otherwise man w uh the anti- takes would have been I mean they already were out in full force but if not for those two just making an absolute statement away from home I think we'd be talking about the the conference as a whole with a a much different tenor not the best week I think for the SEC um but and I realize Georgia an Old Miss you're doing your thing but um nobody watched you play cupcakes on Saturday so forgive me for not including you um the fact that the SEC is already kind of taking it on the chin from some people is telling it shows us that we are in mid-season form will this is your first recap pod of the season after you were in Vegas last weekend how are we feeling how was how was a full day how was 14 hours of football getting the the juices flowing again it was great man um I still have covid so I'm a little bit uh hazy as I was watching the games I was remembering I was like dang I was pretty like up and down I was like very much like oh this team is going to blow this team out I was like not safe for a lot of my picks I was like like huh um so yeah I think this next week I'm going to go and actually write down scores and stick with them so so because hopefully I won't be as covid addled and be able to like stick with stuff but yeah it was super fun man um I just love the sport so much you're good though you had Co brain you're fine all your sport fine whereas a lot of my predictions um if you are a sicko and want to go back and listen to them didn't age particularly well I I don't want to say they aged like an avocado but they didn't really age much better than that at a lot of key places where I was like holy cow did not see that coming but that just kind of goes to show you that happens a lot with week two of this season and it was a strange week as a whole very very strange week two all these things that we felt like we knew we're going to get to some Notre Dame things later where we do uh overreaction or proper reaction we have BMA USF things that we'll get to at the end here but yeah it was a a strange week too uh little housekeeping so first of all we got the new mic stand here for the YouTube audience shout out to you look fresh look professional we love it will definitely bought this for me uh SEC media days I had this thing ready to go and uh just one of those things that have not had the time to be able to set it up and finally said Friday you know what I'm doing this so we look a little bit different also might sound a little bit different so we're still trying to figure out the exact flow of like Sunday mornings and stuff I try and line it up with Claire snap schedule as much as possible she's out for for a walk right now CLA learned how to walk so huge milestone huge milestone but this is the and for like parents like you kind of get what I'm talking about here this is the first weekend where she realized she could walk so she's been all over the place she's been traveling uh she really is there's a whole world out there that she is uh that she is trying to explore and trying to see one stuff at a time and she just might she absolutely might so if you hear a 16-month old baby in the background a little bit of Grace I'll do the best I can to try and make sure that that noise is kept to a minimum but week two let's get it will let's start with Texas and Michigan because look if we're looking for an SEC braat if if the canals of the world are like hey you know what SEC is terrible five and six against core four teams so far through two weeks that's my stat not his um all you have to do is say look DK there's only one core four team who has a road Victory against an AP top 10 team and that is Texas I actually kind of hate that because it excl includes Northern Illinois future lad of the week by the way Northern Illinois um having said that what a statement win that was for Sark and the Longhorns in ant Arbor went into Michigan and just bullied the team that's been doing a whole lot of bullying the last couple years it is a very different era I think Michigan fans who went into that game thinking we're still gon to be just fine it's still Michigan it's the the tradition that that we have with this coaching staff we're going to be just fine I know it's a lot of new pieces but not to worry nope first Michigan loss in front of their home fans so that's excluding 2020 since 2019 against Ohio State Justin Fields was the last quarterback to go into Ann Arbor and win a game um probably equally deflating for Michigan fans compared to this speaking of Ohio State will I don't know if you if you caught this sometimes I tune out some of the the pregame conversation because it's like it's a good opportunity for for those of us that watch like a million of these games it's a good opportunity to like go and do other stuff you're like all right I'm going to go is where I got to go to the bathroom I got to go you know get something to drink whatever I like Joel clad a lot I really do but but I do think he dips into the the canal water a little bit too much at times that's a lot of DK mentions DK is great too but for the most part I I think if you're just talking about game analysis in game show me something that me the viewer at home can actually take from watching you provide insight I think he does a great job at that strictly that but he said before the game that the thinking was that Texas would be like the Ohio State teams that Michigan has been beating and that the Wolverines would try and show that they're more physical I hated that take when he said it I hated that take in the middle of the second quarter I hated that take so much by the end of the game and I I think even if you're a Michigan fan you looked at that and went wow Texas just took our soul they took our lifeblood that was both sides of the ball by the way didn't matter that Texas didn't have your boy Bo Davis anymore um didn't matter that they didn't have sweat they didn't have Murphy those guys looked awesome up front Michigan couldn't run the ball Michigan could not run the football longest that's all they can do famously so if they can't do that they're out of luck onedimensional offense that had zero Dimensions working in its favor longest run of the day was 12 yards they lit up 82 sack adjusted rushing yards 3.7 yards per carry and again this was supposed to be their Mo and instead they ran into this Texas defensive line that yeah has some new pieces on there but still Alfred Collins is a guy that they were expecting to do big things coming back and so far he looks the part Trey Moore was a big-time transfer coming over from UTSA and then the Freshman Colin Simmons I mean that guy looked like a manp possessed he's not exactly at Dylan Stewart levels just yet we're gonna get to Dylan Stewart a little bit later South Carolina fans but man they showed the world that if you have a two quarterback system you have a no quarterback system mhm it was terrible was absolutely terrible like they they both got picked off like those Michigan quarterbacks had no rhythm whatsoever 58 minutes without a touchdown in that one and on the other side of the ball how about this that Michigan defensive line is the strength of their team with Mason Graham and they're they're a group that is going to need to win that battle up front if they're going to have any chance whatsoever at the playoff Texas didn't let up one sack and that's thanks in large part to how stinking good Quinn ERS was everything he did at Bama last year he did at at Michigan in this game this year because look I'll agree with you I don't is even though I I I am very much in the proe camp I think he's one of the nation's best quarterbacks I don't think he does any one thing better than anyone else in college football is that fair like we I think we agree on that point right yeah no I think that I think he's just like a well-rounded solid player but like the off platform throws that he makes m mhm he has gotten so good at that and it used to be look at the arm Talent with those off platform throws this is truly special that's kind of what first made me when back when he was you know 16 17 years old go this kid is this kid is very very different but now that he's put it together with the Poise like just I mean go ask an Auburn fan what it's like to have a quarterback that keeps his eyes up downfield instead of just ni yeah yeah Kentucky fans like what that's like I mean you you just saw it and when like it just feels like when the moment is Big he just kind of lives for it and it's call it the clutch team whatever you want to call it man he was he was awesome when Jaden blue went down in that game and he limps to the sideline Texas fans are like oh gosh this is bad we already know two scholarship running backs get hurt in Camp CJ baxer being one of them and it was like you were said oh okay no big deal I'm actually G to get better right now and Jaden blue fortunately ends up returning and he catches a little swing pass that he that he beats Michigan Defenders to the pylon show some nice burst being able to do that but I thought Texas just played a championship level game on the road and two things can be true at the same time because I know these are going to be popular takeaways from this one is that Michigan is going to endure a legitimate regression coming off of a championship season there was in my opinion zero doubt going into this one and there is obviously a whole lot of confirmation that Michigan is due for a step back and at the same time I like I think that if even if Michigan is is still an eight and4 team which that's kind of what where I I think they're heading this year I don't think they make the playoff perhaps like the only smart prediction that I made by the way was that Michigan or whoever lost this game would not compete for a national title Michigan will not compete for a national title um but the other side is that Texas checks a very important boxes to be able to win like that and it doesn't mean that Texas is destined wi National Championship because they beat a a very young and experiened Michigan team but the perceived weaknesses that we talk about like with the pass catchers all that turnover s talked about the death you don't have Xavier worthy you don't have ad Mitchell anymore what's it going to look like those guys were awesome the defensive line looked darn good and if anything we're kind of seeing a three-headed rushing attack Blossom behind a quarterback that's getting better and better it doesn't mean that they can you know W they can withstand every injury that comes up but they just looked the part in every single way and I think Texas is legitimate National Title Contender and not the team that lost wait for the 14 non-conference games from 2010 to 2022 goodness yeah no I'm right there with you man it just goes to show how Texas is built right like you talked about the line play that makes you kind of Recession Proof in a way especially when you go on the road right which is what Texas has done two years in a row kind of like Sil Silence the Critics um and I think exactly to your point like if you know we expected a regression from Michigan sure if there were one thing that we could kind of hang our hat on it is that dline play and the physicality that Michigan has been known for especially against the Texas team that just straight up was like a step away from playing receivers at running back right and that's the funny thing about it is that you know you don't have any of these like Factor Backs from Texas that are that are common in the sarkeesian system like usually it's like oh this running back versus this defense and it's kind of ironic in a way right because when Texas had those backs they weren't as complete of a football team but now it's like you know the Texas rushing attack whoever might be at this point in time versus the opponent and I'm gonna take that in pretty much every game going forward after seeing this one because it's like it really truly doesn't matter you don't need to have some guy out there you know a beon making three people Miss behind the line of scrimmage and putting the whole offense on his back it's like no these running backs are gonna have three yards of space before they even touch the football they're going to be able to rumble forward behind this huge offensive line they have Quinn ERS who's going to be the focus of the offense it's G to take the pressure off of them the whole defense is going to be spending their time figuring out what qu years is going to do they're going to get after him but he's like sturdy he's smart he's going to make the off platform throws so you're going to need to send pressure most of the time just to affect him uh and even when you do that it's not really going to help your run game or your run defense so yeah I think this is just one team bullying another team um and and I think that that's crazy when you think about Texas and the fact that you know it should be a lot bigger of a hurdle for Texas to be as good as they were last year than Michigan right and I mean this looked like one of the Michigan teams from before the co era and this is exact what we used to see when Michigan was losing to Dan Mullen when Michigan was this soft team that would show up and their alumni would be taking over the town they'd bring a million fans with six pieces of gear each they would show up to the game get punched in the mouth and then go home and then they would just look like losers and it's like this Michigan team has no excuse to you know get pushed around the way they did sure if Quinn ERS has 400 passing yards you take that but like this was certainly I mean like the way that lovelin fumbled was weird the way that they just look like they had not been there before they looked like the lights were too bright and this is a team coming off of a national title so I don't know where you find answers there because it's like it's like they saved over their progress It's like they were this team last year that got to the top of the mountain and now they have no idea how to win it's it's very interesting Michigan uh you definitely include Auburn fans in this which we will get to there are a select group of fan bases that have this post week two Clarity of dang I really wanted this to work at quarterback and it can still work obviously you know remember last year how we were talking about milro at this time of year of course it's very very different Texas tends to do that to things PK our guy tends to do that to people but there's this group of teams that I think is realizing man it would have been nice to get a quarterback in the portal would have been real nice and I'm not saying that covers up all of Michigan's issues it definitely doesn't they still have some issues on the back end of that defense where like you you just saw if if it's a quarterback that can kind of keep plays alive with his legs and he stays behind the line of scrimmage will Johnson's great he's tremendous there's a reason why that guy's the number one player in college football 25 but they have issues in coverage on the back end if they're not going to consistently be able to generate pressure and you just kind of saw that you saw that play out man and I like I I think that yours is going to be deserves to be the headline absolutely deserves to be the headline of this one any sort of Heisman conversation that we're having in early September he's part of it take that for what it is but it it is truly crazy to think about this transformation for Texas because even this was an important step last year they go into Bama and yeah they had Buzz to win that game B's still favorite Bama's still favored at home I I expected Bama to win that game last year if you're Texas at that point you can still play up the nobody believes in US card even though there were people that definitely believed in them and you could still kind of make out this case of like yeah you know what we're kind of the we're trying to to show where the power that that's that's returning that's back however you want to phrase it and in this game they're a touchdown favorite on the road against the defending national champs biggest stadium in college football and they come in there and they just silenced that crowd ERS in Texas that offense converted eight third Downs in the first half and it felt like more I mean every single time and gunar helm by the way talk about like one of the the returners that's that's doing some very very big things he already looks like he's going to be a go-to target for ERS in that offense but like everything that Sark did in that game was we are better than you we are going to out scheme you we are going to be more physical than you and you are going to know it by Days end and there is going to be no doubt whatsoever and there really wasn't like it wasn't nothing about that was fluky and I think Texas deserves a ton of credit even if Michigan ends up being seven and five or something that's what you would expect a national championship Contender to do in a place like that with those kinds of stakes so even if you want to kind of discredit Texas I I'd say try and look at the bigger picture man those those are the types of games that you need to be able to have if you're going to be one of these teams that's in the national championship conversation Connor for the second year in a row Texas becomes the first team to fully legitimize itself with a big road to win are we ready to say it yet is Texas back um I'm closer there than look I predicted Texas to go 12 and0 in the regular season so right I predicted that Texas would indeed be back Texas was um predicted um in my playoff projections to have the five seed which don't go back and look at my playoff projections you don't need to see that you don't don't do don't do that to yourself or to me specifically uh not I'm not going to go there just yet not going to go there just yet because uh if Texas goes eight and four against the schedule misses the playoff and we see this this window with yours closed I think we're having a very different conversation Florida state is a good reminder of why Championship windows are a little bit more precious than perceived so I won't go there just yet but man every box they're they're just checking and there's there's no more there's no more porking fun at Texas anymore for losing in September to Maryland or BYU like they are so far removed from that it's crazy and to me this game was just a really good indication of it Texas is uh I mean any sort of top tier in the SEC like they they are there with Georgia it's Texas and Georgia and in my opinion everybody else maybe Miss is going to join that conversation maybe B's goingon to have better days maybe missou is going to have really good days really good start for that defense but miss is there I think I think after last year old Miss is is there in that has but like I their non-conference is is not going to be the sign to me that that shows that they are worthy of being part of that just yet of like that tier one because if we're if we're talking about tier one we're including Georgia in that and do we think Old Miss and Georgia are are in the same tier just yeah maybe they can be maybe they can be maybe they play a good competitive down to the wire game but I I think that I would just Reserve Texas and Georgia for that right now makes sense all right let's go on to another team that's knocking on the door tier one Tennessee will wow man I smoke those boys oh golly I regret saying that NC State would cover um I fully expected to come on here and lead with an nio take but I won't do that because I feel like it would be slightly disrespectful to do so not disrespectful to Nico but I'm gonna instead lead with an apology here I need to apologize to Tim Banks and this Tennessee defense I do I do many apologies from me today uh it was a very uh introspective week too all offseason I thought about the turnover that they were having in that secondary five new pieces there and you can like look across college football and be like oh yeah that guy was on Tennessee last year oh yeah that guy was on Tennessee last year and I I just kept saying look the defensive line we think is going to be extraordinary but what happens when they don't dominate up front for now we don't have to worry about that because guess what they dominate up front and they're winning said people were asking what would happen if I didn't win I guess we'll never know I mean as of right now we're not finding out maybe we will at some point but who knows maybe they'll just mess around and win every single battle up front um for the entire season maybe with the exception of like the Georgia game it so far looks so unbelievably good Tennessee had 13 tfls in this game and only allowed 10 first downs and I'm pretty sure James Pierce Jr didn't have a single tfl he had two quarterback I think he had two hurries or pressures I can't remember which one um but NC State in this game had 143 yards of total offense that's it basura the only NC State score was a pick six which means that Tennessee's defense still has not allowed a touchdown this year the Tennessee defense did have a pick six of its own which came via walk-on will Brooks still a walk-on will Brooks will Brooks and it actually came at a very pivotal point in the game if you're watching it looked like NC State was about to make it 10-6 or 1010 like it was really important juncture and then boom uh Tennessee defensive line kind of forces the pressure Grayson Mcall air Mills the running back in the flat and a walk-on is going the other way to the house Tennesse defensive Walk-Ons have more touchdowns scored this season than their opponents in 120 Minutes of football that'll play that's that's pretty darn good that game all around was very impressive by Tennessee because they won 51 to1 and it felt like they could have won by more I mean kind of an ideal scenario if you're Josh hypo because you get some teachable moments for Nico with the turnovers one was a ball that was overthrown in the middle and the game was a lot closer and then another he was kind of hit by that front side pressure as he was throwing it's just one of those plays where you know you get a little bit more of a of a sense in the pocket you can kind of you know the footwork takes care of something like that but he did end up just having 23 passing attempts in this one with a very ground heavy approach I said it would not surprise me at all if he after this week of Buzz has less than 25 pass attempts because hypo's going to say let's do what we do best let's run the football let's play good defense win that battle and don't you know what they did remember when I said that the over under for Tennessee rushing guards was 240 wow 249 yep right there PR good pretty good I'm starting to think and Tennessee fans you let me have it uh for a couple of things but for this specifically I'm starting to think maybe I should have given Dylan Samson a little bit more consideration even as an allb the drum team member to be the sec's leading rusher because um Marcus Carroll is very much at a shared backfield at missou for the time being and Samson has 256 rushing yards on 32 carries this year 169 scrimmage yards in this game that guy is a he is awesome if you have not seen Dylan Samson play football yet I suggest you watch and Tennessee fans you were clamoring for this guy to be able to get more run last year Jaylen Wright was a great player but man this guy is so effective in this offense Tennessee is a whole is a problem and I'm starting to think I probably underrated them coming into the Year by saying that they were an eight and4 team and I don't necessarily think this all of a sudden means that they're going 111 or something like that but here's something I was thinking about Tennessee fans I'm sure you've been on the internet at making this case for uh last what 12 hours basically how many teams right now if I had an AP poll vote would I rank ahead of the Falls Georgia Ohio State Texas those are the definites okay I think they they've earned it I would I would pick them to if we're doing the the the Josh P school of thought I would pick them to win in a neutral site no doubt um after that though like ol Miss Miami USC I I'd probably rank those teams ahead of Tennessee but I definitely have to think about it I that might be it though that that might be it because think about it not Notre Dame not Michigan not Utah not missou not Oregon we're gonna have more on Oregon later yeah I'd have no problem raking Tennessee ahead of Alabama at this point yeah I I mean how how could you not when you've actually played someone and you look the part I think it's totally different and I took it on the chin midweek I tweeted out we we're doing um weekly rankings weekly top 25 for uh for SDS with all of us and we're coming out with like her consensus rankings and I you know took some hate for having Tennessee only at 16 when they looked obviously masterful in the opener against an FCS team and I said that a win against n state would significantly change that Tennessee being in the top 10 should be obvious and that'll be known by the time people are listening but if you tell me that the balls are worthy of like a top five ranking at this point I don't think I'm going to talk someone out of that and I did not expect to have that perspective going into this weekend yeah I think it's it's very interesting like what the national conversation on Tennessee is like because people like for things to be easy right and when you have the year on 22 where they beat Alabama and it's like okay hen hooker I can believe in all this all this makes sense okay cool you take like that weird step back last year and I know we talked about it a lot but it does really matter right because this is what Josh A's offense looks like I mean this is like what we expect every year and and that would be the question is okay do you kind of have that sophomore hangover you know what does the future of Josh Hol in the SEC look like and you know we hit on it in this offseason and I hate to just say we were right but like this is exactly what we were hoping for this Tennessee offense to look like which is that amava being able to move the pocket and get these easy first downs completely changes the complexion of what they're able to do and furthermore to you're point about Dylan Samson that guy's a beast um the way that they're able to to block things up um this is true about Tennessee it's true about Old Miss it's something we've been talking about for years you know it's easy to get caught up in the window dressing and talk about the vertical downfield passing and squirrel white and all that stuff but in reality you know Tennessee and miss both look like teams that want to be flashy but in reality their goal is to punch you in the mouth and Tennessee has had phenomenal o line dline play kind of like I just talked about Texas um kind of since the hyp era started that's one thing that they've covertly built you know the back end with Ma and Pierce and those guys and I think that you see you know the new version of the hyp offense where you know why did Josh Hy struggle at UCF you know he actually would really struggled with rank teams uh he struggled with teams that were more talented than them well why is that well once you get off of the scripted plays this offense kind of starts to Flap in the wind well how do you change that you bring in dudes and they got some dudes right they got some dudes that make it so hard to get Tennessee off schedule and that's what we saw last year is like okay if this offense gets off schedule it can be a problem if you take a negative play if you take a penalty if you're looking at second 15 and you're not able to run the ball or or you know you're you're counting on those downfield passes to hit versus having them be a bonus and I think that's what we saw against NC State I mean you saw NC State offense that was basically content to just you know chunk the ball down the field three and four yards at a time and Tennessee's defense was just sitting there like a pack of wolves just waiting for them to make a mistake you know Grayson McCall fumbled it was OV every time they pounced on the football and it was just a team that was playing within themselves and confident I think that you know now that we're seeing year two three of these teams like you know Texas missou Old Miss Tennessee teams that are kind of doing things that we haven't seen in the modern era with their logo on their chest and it's not having to get yourselves up and kind of do the meme with the guys looking at himself in the mirror pointing to himself like you are a big team don't go out there and puke on your shoes it's like no this is the expected result this is what I expected Tennessee to do Tennesse State because they're better football team they're more talented um at the quarterback position they have a guy who fits their system a little bit better and I think we saw that um because grayon McCall's a great college player but you know he's kind of like more of a free agent and I think that when you see a guy like hyle GRS who pick as you know a guy like amava he doesn't need to have like we said 400 passing yards to be successful he just needs to be the conductor and and Lead this Orchestra of an offense and I think more and more you're seeing this in college where it's not about the quarterback making the system it's about the system fitting the quarterback because when you can isolate one player you can beat a team but I mean like you said you know amava had a couple of picks here he wasn't lights out he only had just north of 200 passing yards but he did enough to make this offense a juggernaut and that's the goal the goal is not you know win the Heisman the goal is not you know break records the goal is Win games specifically on the road in these hostile environments where in the in the past you've kind of struggled you know the swamp last year was a struggle well I go back to the very first podcast we did of this rendition mhm and it was right after hypo was hired MH we talked a lot about how much of a struggle it was going to be for hyp to have the complimentary football yeah to have a defense that didn't look like it hated the offensive side of the ball and how that was going to be a major challenge in this conference and that you were really gonna have to get guys that understood you're going to be on the field probably more than the vast majority of units in college football you're going to need to have depth and if you don't have depth and if you don't develop you are going to get exposed and you're going to put bad film out there and that is not an easy thing to say I think to a lot of time to a lot of guys and by having the coordinator continuity that they do with Tim Banks you're seeing it up front and it's why so far at least they've been able to withstand that turnover on the back end it's because like you look at their front seven everybody just knows where they need to be at all times and having peely back and healthy in that lineup is so so huge a veteran like that and and very very important that he stays healthy in the middle of that defense because I remember after spring Elijah Herring who was their leading tackler from last year hit the portal I was like is this like another bad sign for Tennessee's defense and he kind of realized dude might have been just struggling to be able to find a spot to play and he ends up going to Memphis who look I I I praise Memphis for making an addition like that but still you kind to see they have depth and they do play complimentary football it's it's an incredible thing for Tennessee to see and to see how far this program has come because man even year one of the hyp era that's a game where I think NC State at least takes it down to the wire it's a lot more competitive even if you have hen and hooker out there and instead this was a game in which there was clearly a better team clearly a better team and uh I think Tennessee is is absolutely going to be staying in this 12 team playoff conversation I I would have no problem ranking them significantly higher than I did last week yeah and and that's actually a good point too when it comes to complimentary football because an easy way to keep the footballs run for 250 right you know that'll do it and you out gain your opponent by 300 yards and you win The Possession battle suddenly you know what I'm saying so that's a really really good point where it's like yeah you know it used to be 50 points at whatever cost now it's like we want 50 points we want to be pretty so I think it's that's a really good point whereas this team has gotten more comfortable winning these uh you know like barf fight style games like like Kentucky last year where it's like no we'll score 30 points but we'll score 30 aggressive points and settle in the football you know what's pretty incredible too in that game it wasn't even necessarily the big chunk plays where like in the opener where the Deep ball is there and they're they're getting guys deep or you think about like the peak hyp you know jayen hayatt got five yards of Separation on Alabama's entire defense and its schemed looks and guys with hands on hips that just don't L like they can compete with the tempo and I actually thought at moments like NC State was handling that Tempo and it wasn't necessarily a sign that they were un that they were unprepared for it but they were just not winning those battles one-on-one and to me that's a credit for the vers that it's a credit to the versatility that this group has and they're going to be able to beat you in in several ways and I don't know that we've said that about any other hypo team even the 22 team they were still gonna have they had the number one offense in college football you still felt like all right you're going to need to probably score 35 points to be able to win this game they but in the rain where' that go and that's what they've built up you know what I'm saying at the end of the day not to say that you know they could beat Georgia or anything but like that's the style of game that they realized they couldn't win when they needed to win it and they were like oh yeah so that's credit to hypo big transformation all right the only SEC Conference game that we had in week two man it was decisive South Carolina Kentucky we were long overdue for a Shane Beamer double digit dog win I don't know that it's he swag on he did turn his swag on a little bit sunglasses are so 2022 he said afterwards um Toby Keith win little hot you like me now not quite not quite I we'll get to it but I think this is a little bit of a Stoops puka to shoes game too I think there's two sides to this dance probably yeah and look here's all you need to know about how weak to week this sport is and why people like us who talk about it for a living can look like we flip-flop all the time or we just look really really dumb on this pod last week I sounded the alarms for South Carolina after it barely beat Old Dominion and if you barely beat Old Dominion that's what you deserve that's not being wrong to be clear if you barely beat Old Dominion at home and you're coming off of a five- win season yes I'm going to be critical apologies if that upsets people South Carolina fans it upset all of you okay you get it a week later South Carolina flew home back to Columbia with a 25-point road win as a double- digit dog and with it it earned a visit from college game day for the first time in a decade for that game next week against LSU I South Carolina was like dead last in SEC Power Rankings because of how good of a week one Bandy had and here we are a week later being like yep got college game day back in the house and for those that are like wow why would they go to LSU South Carolina that's not a particularly good game um bad yeah look no bad Saturdays no bad Saturdays I know that's tough for Kentucky fans um but the slate is not exactly loaded with Headliners so you can take a deep breath and realize that there are not a whole lot of other options uh for college g day but it is awesome and it does speak to the week toe progress that South Carolina made and it's crazy to think about how quickly things can change in this league but at the same time answer this what about South Carolina's identity changed drastically with the performance that we saw in Lexington week to week because the ground game only had 98 sack adjusted rushing yards three yards per carry Lenor sers made nicer throws D Lins did a better job of scheming Guys open there were enough of those plays where he's throwing into big windows and Kentucky had the defensive breakdowns um and that Kentucky defense looked gassed in the second half they really did but South Carolina add they they allowed 12 tfls in this game they allowed 12 tfls and won by 25 points on the road as a double digit dog I somebody has that stat somewhere like be felica some somebody Stanford Steve how many times that's ever happened in football because that's wild Nick haror still didn't get a touch in this game though he did earn a DPI because they actually targeted him deep and it turns out when you target the fastest human on the earth you tend to get guys out of position a little bit but let's point out the positive because South Carolina has the most obvious positive yet of the Beamer era finally finally finally finally I don't even know if they had this during the must champ era they have a defensive line that can eat they get after you and it's not just Dylan Stewart and Tonka Hemingway who by the way looked awesome once again TJ Sanders was great as well Debo Williams all over the place this group as a whole looks like it is just playing downhill like it is starting at this like steep steep incline and everything they do is just like sprinting down a treadmill and you're like how are these guys getting off the ball so fast ky's big blue wall It reversed back to the big blue gate no chance no chance whatsoever that was an awful awful awful game for Brock Vandergriff to be a part of we can talk about practice reps all we want how many times in Brock Vander Griff's Football Life do you think he ever felt like he was at that big of a disadvantage like third grade maybe I don't I think third grade Brock Vandergriff had appeared I don't probably I think it's prob the biggest advantage over everyone third grade Brock Vander was cutting down trees and powerlifting you power cleaning 250 lbs all right like I I I was thinking about that like how often do you think he's actually felt like that on a football field because if he's facing pressure like that even though he obviously went to a very prestigious program as DAV as the coach you can usually Escape that kind of pressure guys aren't really going to be able to bring you down when you're at that size and he was so messed up that by the end of that game when he actually got time to throw on that designed roll out that ball was right to worry just right to him on that pick six and you're like this is awful I mean that that throw was just might as well have just called out his name and said Nick here's a football for you awful No Good Very Bad Day for kenty's offense when your body is subconsciously like well you know what the quickest way out of getting chased by Dylan Stewart is just to throw this interception it's like not good like the gentleman had a 1.2 qbr on the day I don't even know where the 1.2 came from I'm like trying to think of it it's like did they have a screen pass St three completions for 30 yards I mean if you didn't watch that game and if you just saw the box score like Perry was texting me afterwards because obviously you know Perry being a Georgia fan he's he's like you know dialed into to what Brock is doing he's like dude what happened it's kind of hard to explain how ineffective Kentucky was throwing the football the lack of trust that they had in him and which is it you know is chicken or the egg is the lack of trust that they had in him or you know should they have given him more opportunities to be able to throw because they ran the ball actually okay you know it wasn't like they were they were lights out but every time they were in an obvious they were an obvious passing situation it was like third and 12 it was like well this is just an automatic Sack or a pressure and he's gonna have to throw it away and there's no chance and I don't I don't remember the last time I said that about South Carolina like even Javon kinlaw those days like it is going to be so difficult to Game Plan for the South Carolina defensive line and now next week sneaky awesome matchup with those LSU tackles trying to trying to slow down that South Carolina pass rush all of a sudden we're talking about like one of the like better strength on strength matchups in the SEC like will how much right now as an LSU fan are you looking at that going buddy I know I know we've got some NFL ready dudes out on the outside and that's supposed to be the anchor but it's hard to feel particularly good when you've seen what this South Carolina pass rush is capable of yes it's the deal right it's like uh yeah I mean LSU's best running back was John Emy who tore his ACL so like they are not going to have a factor back or a guy who can make people miss so yeah to answer your question I hope they just kind of take some duct tape and put it firmly on will Campbell's mouth before this game so he didn't feel like oh we're about to go go 10 Rounds with these guys this is gonna be heavyweight fight no no no no no just keep the fall starts St yeah uh that that would be a win for for LSU that place is going to be rocking uh as Beamer said High Noon that kickoff will be um but yeah I mean it's kind of wild to think that South Carolina and Kentucky has turned into this one-sided matchup you know that's straight for Beamer against Stoops before Beamer Stoops had two losses to South Carolina it was like oh ky's an underdog to South Carolina again stops is gonna go into Columbia or Stoops is gonna welcome South Carolina in and he's going to find a way to beat them like houst to just beat muschamp every single year and I know that those two guys do not get along they do not like each other Stoops is a whole like Stoops in South Carolina that's like the team that he dislikes the most in my opinion based on everything I've seen from him but man Beamer has just totally taken that and I wish I'd listen to my preseason prediction when I said that South Carolina would go into Lexington because I just think Beamer knows how to game plan against dups and he's shown that he's been able to do that um not to cold take Matt Jones on the this is the path to nine and three for Kentucky thing but it took us two weeks to realize that not everybody is going to be part of the playoff conversations uh moving forward huge win for South Carolina huge huge win and definitely shows that they are not going to be um a door mat in the SEC this year yeah yeah I mean really love you know that kind of that bounceback mentality Dow loggin you have avoided my wrath for an additional week l no sellers I mean it's crazy because he also got banged up early in the game right like we saw some bonus Robbie Ashford that's always fun did you see that Beamer went like a full 90 seconds he gave like a Between Two Ferns style interview in the middle of this game actually it's really good call out Molly McGrath like asked him like basically like Lenor sers going to the locker room like you know what could we expect to see from Robbie Ashford and he was like for 90 seconds Beamer defended basically why he got Robbie Ashford out of the portal this off season there were plenty of guys that came out said oh we want to be guarantee the spot but that kid over it's like brother you're in the middle of an SEC East game BL I know that exist yeah you have like don't you need to be doing something right now brother I appreciate the access but yeah no I'm I'm with you it's like it's interesting to see what this team is going to be because we still we didn't really get to see L Lenor cers as a rusher um I I hate to just like I said put this all in Kentucky but at the same time like man I mean it's like if there was something to do wrong on a football field they really did it on Saturday and I ask you this like is you know Stoops has these games every year he has one to three of these games every year I get it I know this is nothing new that being said do you think this is one game or do you think this is kind of how this is gonna look for them this year it felt like a bigger picture problem it really did week two you knew the fans were going to be fired up SEC nation was there shout out my guy cash Daniel by the way doing great stuff with uh he got to do a lot of stuff with SEC network um long overdue to be able to have cash back on but if Kentucky is not particularly relevant obviously that's a little bit tougher to break break down uh Kentucky but the the the crowd was was super into it they didn't really get a true opener after all the rain delays last week so the atmosphere was going to be good it was going to be you know got the ABC treatment because that's what they're doing now with you know the ESPN ABC lineup it was the only conference game of the day so it wasn't a sleepy start or anything like that or oh they just discounted South Carolina and it was you a game that they should have won but they couldn't find a way no no they got dominated man like they got absolutely dominated and it makes you wonder has stupes kind of lost his way I think that's fair to ask and I know I've been saying throughout this off season guys I think this is it for stops of Kentucky I think 2024 is the last year that game certainly did not make me feel bad about that take I'll say that like and and I feel bad because kuy does have strengths like again I mentioned how how well they played in that front seven and they had a few of those coverage bus where you know just mistakes that you can't make I wonder how much of that is just being gas but they have strengths on that team so it's not like they have nothing and they like everybody has just given up but man what a disaster that was and I I actually like I don't know that that's the type of game that Stoops always has because it's one thing to have that game happen against Georgia but to have that happen don't worry buddy we got next week for that I know right and watch like next week with with how random it's been so far ky's going to come out and play a four quarter game with Georgia like that's just the way that this is going to work and and all of a sudden it's going to be like oh yeah see they Carson Beck needed to put together a touchdown Drive late to be able to beat Kentucky or something like that but this is a a troubling troubling start to see that happen in SEC play where it just looked like they had no answers whatsoever to be able to stop that South Carolina pass rush yeah no I I'm kind of there with you right where it's like I I think that you know if you look at other team's J I mean they had 44 passing yards you know what I'm saying and like at the end of the day that's not something that stops has been super gung-ho about fixing period right throughout his career so when you think about how it would need to look to fix what this team has wrong and I'm just trying to imagine STS at this point in his career really digging in and being like okay I'm gonna spend some extra time with the quarterbacks I'm gonna you know draw up some new passing schemes I'm gonna try to find new ways to get Dan and key involved like it just doesn't sound like something he's interested in doing at this point in his career so yeah I'm I'm kind of with you like I love the thing that stops has done but it just feels like a like he's just not fired up to be there it just feels like this is not something like it's like if we can win this very specific way he likes to win then sure he'll show up and be happy for it but when it comes to the adap or die thing I think that you know bringing in the transfer quarterback to him was like this is it I'm done I don't need to worry about this anymore and it's like brother what if that guy doesn't shows up and isn't as advertised do you care enough objectively to get in there and go okay we got some Gavin whims hat going on what are we doing here what's up for next week and answer is I don't right you saw what he said at I media days it wouldn't be I media days if I didn't have to talk about a new offensive coordinator right every year in the 2020s they have had a different offensive coordinator and that's of course Liam having the the two separate stints but yeah it is uh it is a team right now that is in desperate need of some answers because buddy if you thought South Carolina was going to get after it up front uh Georgia yeah good luck with that good luck with that all right well Arkansas and Hope State game this game was day drinking this game was day drinking for Arkansas and here's why mhm when you daydrink you get that early Buzz it's light out you're maybe with your buds your girlfriends whoever it may be and you're wondering at some point during day drinking why don't we do this more often this is great you're wondering why life can't always be this easy but then the buzz wears off maybe take a nap you wake up late afternoon early evening you haven't figured out what you're doing for dinner yet you napped excessively so your sleep schedule's a little bit messed up you got a slight hangover depending on what age you are okay I don't want to generalize and say everybody gets hangover some day drinking but you know who you are and you have that Clarity and you realize how sobering day drinking can be Arkansas fans did I just describe your Saturday because that's what it was that's what this game was sprinkle in like a few Boot and rallies um and that was the Arkansas day certainly felt like a boot and rally when Arkansas got another overtime because Mike cundy tried to kneel to set up a 41 yard field goal in overtime I thought he deserved to lose for doing that I really did I was like you have the best running back in college football and you are kneeling to set up and I realize Arkansas did a great job defending him but I thought that decision was wild Arkansas probably deserved to lose for how careless it was with the football and the Pitman decision to go for it on Fourth and four in a tie game with seven minutes left in a kick in the field goal not great I realized the context was Arkansas just missed a kick from from that distance basically um at the start of the fourth quarter but the crazy thing about this game is that Arkansas hit the perfect day drinking Buzz will I think you texted me during that moment of when this was because ton green was making plays Oly Gordon second couldn't get anything going against that Travis Williams defense he had no run longer than five yards for the first three quarters of this game Yep this was the day drinking buzz you aspire to get to it was the exact scenario that Arkansas Drew up to win this game but those turnovers down the stretch were obviously really really costly I wonder with how this played out and how winnable it felt like it was at various points for Arkansas obviously winning leading by double digits on the road against top 25 team you always want to be able to have those games it's so frustrating when you can't close it out for anyone much less a coach on the hot seat admittedly like Sam Pitman is but you can't help but wonder is that one game that one day drinking Saturday going to be the one that we look back on and say yep that might have been the one that cost Sam pitman's job like if he could have had that how different would Arkansas season be it doesn't mean that it changes the entire trajectory there were still positives it was still a positive to see that Arkansas defensive line look as good as it did there were still some great moments from T and green I love jaquin and Jackson I actually text my my buddy Ben did like a his dynasty draft where he picked Nico as number one pick his first running back I told him Jinn and Jackson coming over from Utah He's a guy that I should have talked about probably more in the preseason but I'm like go after him in this offense it's gonna be fun to watch and he's been really good he was dealing with cramps throughout the day but like Arkansas actually has an identity actually has an identity has positives and still you look at the way this game played out and the context of the last couple years with Pitman losing all these ones score games and you're like man when is this going to change what am I gonna do for dinner I have a headache this sucks yeah I I love that I mean I I'll say it's as simple as this Arkansas's receivers look like they were day drinking they I don't understand how man we talked about this in the preseason and it's like as much as we like tayen green as much as we like Jackson as much as we like you know Bobo honestly at this point it's like someone well has is not the problem that's the thing has had a beautiful catch like I'm not even specifically talking to him but it's these other guys right you know what I'm saying it's like it's like this was the thing kind of stopping us from getting over the hump and it's like look with t green like you're gonna have some plays where he like thinks the running back is coming the wrong way and like almost fumbles and I get that but then there there are going to be these plays that he just throws the ball in this beautiful arcing rope and you got to catch it like I know it's shocking if you play an Arkansas to see a ball exactly be right there and not be a little bit off I get that but like man you can't let those chances get away and I felt like you know we saw that over and over again as the game kind of went down the stretch you know guys getting hit in the chest guys like just not exactly being on the same page and I think part of that is you know just being in the new offense new quarterback I weirdly feel like Bobby Petrino is one of the better offensive Minds in the game right now he still got it he still got it man he does yeah you radicalized me there I really do think he's a great offensive mind like the fact that's why they were able to get up so early in Oklahoma State but then when the pressure got there it's like you know and that's what Sam pitman's teams used to be was a team that would punch you in the mouth and just never take the foot off the gas and now they've kind of gotten a little bit you know scared bashful whatever it would be they're just kind of like oh I don't know what's going to happen so yeah I don't know it's disappointing to have a team you know you're going you're in double overtime and you lose by eight points you know it's like how do you how do you reconcile that when you're winning all day it's like I think I picked Oklahoma State to win but not cover but then you know win by points it's you know so at the end of the day I think you know the final score it's it's kind of like the inverse of the B game right the final score isn't really going to tell the story here but at the same time Arkansas put itself in a position to have that final score so you're only as good as as what the scoreboard says so yeah at the end of the day like it's I saw lots of good things I'm not backing off of my hopei and for aras's offense but I totally get what you're saying here which is that you know like we said in the preview it's like how many teams is Arkansas going to be more talented then very few and so this is one of the teams where you're able to get them on the run you were able to start pushing them around a little bit and then in the end you know dude that quarterback for o Oklahoma State oh my God D alen Bowman alen Bowman I've been saying this forever he plays 500 the game 500 with his receivers he's just like I get points for how high I throw this correct that's the way that this works yeah the the finger guns that he did at the entire Arkansas bench oh my gosh bro that that was just such a sickos committee moment to do that after you you're setting up like the um what was it yeah cuz they had that was when they were about to take the lead I think it was and they get deep into Arkansas territory and they show the replay it's like it was like the KY Lacy thing all over again you're like all you you just can't except KY Lacy is a heck of a football player this dude threw it absolute like it looked like the throw that Milton had when he got hit by Watson like Inya was playing in the background it was he was getting hit it was an absolute duck and this dude somehow comes down with it and then you look at the quarterback and he's like d like the worst finger guns I've ever seen in my life it's like brother do you think that was you like to be that guy golly yeah that game was wild absolutely wild um Arkansas fans I think there will be some positive moments ahead because you're doing a lot of those things that you hoped were going to be on the table for you in the preseason but the fact that we're talking about this this team still struggling in these ones score games man H those those those leads those those opportunities they are precious and they can be very very fleeting all right let's talk call and Auburn hand up hand all the way up here I like to take accountability there are a lot of people that do shows like this that have zero accountability whatsoever they've never been wrong about I taking their life uh congratulations to them I am not one of those people I like to admit when I'm wrong hand all the way up I was wrong dead wrong to say that Payton Thorne would be the sec's most improved player and that this game specifically with show that year-to-year transformation took way too long to get to those nine completions by the way um golly was I wrong so so wrong the only thing that I was right about with this game was when he got the ball on the final possession I said at Lauren I said well the only way that this ends is with another Payton Thorne pick and I could almost barely get those words out before he was just throwing it right at a cal Defender I don't even think he had a targeted receiver on that play he was just like you know what I'm done I I got nothing left you guys figured me out I should probably not be doing this at this high of a level I don't belong on this stage it was so bad this is a guy that look I understand the situation in front of him wasn't great with the right side of that Auburn offensive line they're dealing with with injuries whatever they couldn't really protect him this is a guy that is entering year four as a college starting quarterback he has played way too much football to look that bad on his home field against a team that boarded a plane and flew 2500 miles with a bunch of three stars and they did that to him no excuse absolutely no excuse for pton Thorn's performance it wasn't just him but the fact that that felt dare I say even worse than 2023 was telling I mean it felt like we were watching the New Mexico State game all over again that that's what this game felt like that Thorne was so lost that at one point they were trying to speed up the tempo because they were trailing late because that's what happens when he turn the football over five times and he didn't realize that cam Coleman had gotten banged up and Coleman tries to take himself out but he can't because they're trying to run the tempo and then Thorne like looks his way at the line of scrimage he like oh I got cam Coleman single coverage maybe cam Coleman should have been more demonstrative and just not run a route on this play but instead he kind of halfhazard runs this route and Thor throws him up this ball in single coverage that he just has no chance of getting whatsoever and it's picked off bad just bad bad bad bad in every possible way and look I'm not going to do the thing that Anthony Schwarz did on Twitter I'm not just going to blame this on Brian harson okay we can't do that we cannot keep doing that because yes there are elements of the harson regime that still probably linger most notably at the line of scrimmage I acknowledge that but you cannot blame Brian harson for the fact that hu frees publicly very publicly said that paying seven figures for a transfer portal quarterback was not worth it and that he believed in year two of Payton Thorne in this system you cannot blame Brian harson for that decision so I went back and I thought about the quarterbacks that Auburn could have had in the portal all right I lied I just thought about what cam Ward would look like in an Auburn uniform and think about this if you know if Auburn Auburn fans let's just say Auburn fans and and the program as a whole the collective everyone associated with auburn if they could have gone in December like December and I said to him I'm going to give you crystal ball you're going to be able to look two weeks into the college football season you're gonna see what cam Ward's doing you're gonna see what pton Thorne's doing how much do you think they would have been willing to pay for cam Ward because I think that number is like three million bucks yeah way more than just barely getting into seven figures okay it might be Hank Brown time it already might be Hank Brown time though knowing Thorne he's probably gonna light up New Mexico not in Mexico state so different no I was about to say knowing different totally different um maybe he's going to beat Arkansas although I don't really know if he's goingon to be able to farewell against that defensive line and maybe he's gonna convince Hugh frees that he deserves to be the guy I I don't know H like Hugh frees loves Payton Thorne clearly um and pton Thorne has done a master class of convincing coaches that he deserves to come back after Dreadful performances but I mean goodness gracious that was so bad will it was so unbel believably bad no defending it yeah well there's lots of Defending it um but I think uh yeah I you know this is on me right because I truly I no it's not no it's not do not blame yourself I'm blame myself I took my hater hat off I had not seen anything but basur from Pon Thor and I thought to myself I'm gonna listen to everyone they're going to figure this out and I I blinked at the last moment I always thought this guy was you know not great I will just put it that way um I hate to you know come down on him because it's not really his fault right to your point you could blame two different college football coaches mainly who free I'm not gonna go ahead and say you know because it's so funny to me it's like these coaches that come in year one you know Sunny Dykes did what he did Brian Kelly did what he did in year one and then you have these programs that are just like well yeah but four years later you know we still blaming the old guy it's like okay man it's the transfer portal era so if you're still having thoughts and feelings about the old coach and you're this far in if you're whoes that's your own fault bro you you to your point Connor you know could have gotten to the transfer portal could have done all this different stuff and I think at the end of the day I mean hey you know cam Coleman leading receiver so we's get those guys involved but I mean the the pass catchers are better they they are objectively better and when Payton Thorn actually sets his feet and gets time to throw there's only like a 50% chance it's going to get picked off someone's catching it that's the thing um so point being yeah I I I don't know man I just feel like I'm going crazy with the p Thor thing like I just have never seen it like I said I don't see what like this team is just so clearly like a quarterback away to me I don't know I'm right there with you like it's so frustrating because I literally said this offense was stuck in neutral for all of year one when are we going to see this next gear and by bringing back Payton Thorne basically that was a co-sign of like yeah this guy is that gear we just couldn't get it out of him last year and I was like are we looking at a second loss season from alurn which is so disappointing like here's the deal I'm just going to be real about this when you bring in a guy like H frees right to an extent right Ells you're bringing in Brian Kelly like not exactly the same but a lot of the same Sentiments of oh you're choosing you know winning over morality well you better win because then the conversations start to get pretty awkward right and then you got hu F's daughter defending him on Twitter With You Are My Sunshine suit and all this different stuff and it's like look we knew what the deal was here all right we knew that you were coming to town to win football games you do not need to convince me that this is going to be anything that it hasn't been you do not need to convince me all this stuff about you being this great person whatever you're here to win football games when you can't do that right and when Bobby patrino is still lighting up scoreboards it's kind of a problem because it's not about all the other off the field stuff it becomes about on the field and now you go well we took all these risks we paid all this money we dealt with all this public scrutiny and we're sitting here watching pton Thor throw four picks against California if Brian harson had lost like that by doubling down on a quarterback mhm by taking more control of the offense doing the things that Hugh freeze it doubling down on a quarterback who struggled mightily yep what would the conversations be about Brian harson right now in week two of his year two what would those conversations be and why are we nicer to Hugh freze that's kind of my point is it's like you're seeing Brian harson here so why is it like why why do we have a worse taste in our mouth of Brian harson that Hugh freeze because you're getting the same result it's CU hu fre has actually had success in the SEC that's that's what it is that's what it comes down to you're right but it was 10 years ago yes correct no there's no doubt about it and if this offense doesn't turn around there is no denying that hu fre will be on the hot seat entering year three not denying I think he survives year two I mean I'm not gonna go that far I'm not gonna say that this game means that he's not going to survive the end of the season that they're going to be two and out with each of their last two head coaches but troubling like that's the type of game that can just totally deflate a fan base over eight months and I feel so stupid for having a take in December and then just slowly getting away from it the more I listened and it's not to say that everybody who we've had talk about that Improvement on the show was wrong you know Justin Hokinson and Cole cubc and these these Brian stes like these guys do tremendous work and I bet even they were watching on Saturday going like you know just what Neil said I feel duped I feel like everything we've been told is has just been kind of a lie uh because that was not it all right um this was definitely a candidate to be the most embarrassing performance not just in SEC but all college football but Notre Dame definitely took that title running away Oklahoma and Houston man this was terrible I I'm going to get to something bam related in a second because I think there are people like oh B was even worse this was a near disaster Oklahoma's a 30-point favorite in this game 30o favorite I think we can look at Houston and kind of forget with the logo oh yeah you know everything is like maybe this is a little bit of a closer game you know Houston's in the Big 12 now they' they've had some fun offenses it's like yeah well it's year one coach that got beat 30 point got beat by 20 points to UNLV last week so um Oklahoma as a 30 point favorite allowed Houston to have a last ditch drive to try and win it and that was in part because one of the dumbest penalties you will ever see on a football field Oklahoma was kneeling it up four final minute 6 16 to 12 game barn burner but was not going to be able to run out the clock with just a straight up kneel so Jackson Arnold had to do the thing where he moved around for a second which always always always brings on the hit that offensive lineman get riled up about like 99% of the time that happens on those plays and Arnold gets hit by Houston's defensive line and Josh Bates Oklahoma center um as Bren fenol said afterwards lost his mind he takes off his helmet and he's yelling as he's being separated from Houston and then he gets flagged from Sportsman L conduct yeah not only does that stop the clock but it means that Oklahoma instead of just running around and then kneeling it to or like you know going down to be able to end you know and and you know let the rest of the time run off they instead have to punt the football back and Houston gets it with 29 seconds left the game should have been over if this had gone Houston's way and if Houston had found a way to win that with an actual competent lateral play at the end instead of whatever the hell they tried to do I think this would have been a worse blunder than Miami and Georgia Tech last year I truly think that because that would have been so inexcusable to lose a game like that as a 30-point favorite 30 point favorite and luckily for Oklahoma sake they survived but it is officially time to worry about this offense it has zero identity will none no identity whatsoever they can't run the football and even though they were missing multiple starters on offense I don't think you can use that as an excuse for all the offensive issues and while I do think Nick Anderson who again was held out of this one they're really trying to be conservative with him and bring him back for the meat of the schedule which it's about to hit very very soon with Tennessee in a couple weeks I do think that his return will open things up in the passing game a little bit he's the Deep threat he's the guy that can take the top off of a defense that's good but man Deion Burks is the only guy that Jackson Arnold trusts right now and it was a Sleepwalk performance especially in the offensive side of the ball defense actually looks pretty good so give Oklahoma credit for that but that is not gonna fly against a two-lane team that nearly beat Kansas State and it's not gonna fly against that looming SEC Gauntlet that awaits Oklahoma that was a bad bad bad showing by the Sooners yeah I think you pretty much said everything also featured kind of a goofy safety in there it was just like a weird I thought he got out I thought he got out I really like that call yeah but also like it's kind of one of those like why would you put yourself in that position like kind of like ball don't lie so I get it but like yeah I there was a lot going on where it's like this was the gonna say this if there's a game I mean in a way Arkansas felt like this just a little bit where it's like a team is just like floundering but you just kind of feel like they're going to figure it out and then it's just like okay figure it out figure it out figure it out and it just really felt like they were going to lose this game at the very end and it's like how did you guys even the fact that we even got here is so embarrassing but the fact that this is so legitimately clearly really a game at the end here is so wild and like yeah your point that weird penalty like that's not what you're supposed to see from offensive Lin especially like leaders like I just I don't know what to make of this I'm just G to call them all again and see what Oklahoma brings in the future because I really if we're evaluating this fairly we're worrying so I'm just going to pretend it didn't happen to be honest look I I think there's legitimate reason to be concern I I really do I I I tried to provide the context of what was concerning in a 51 to three win against temple in week one and why you could kind of point to the issues that they had on third down as like okay well they dealt with this in-game injury here this a injury there they're doing without this guy and all of those things I think were fair to say about that game this was pretty indefensible this is pretty indefensible and Seth Latrell a guy that I took in our coordinator draft needs to do a better job of being able to get some of these some of these high percentage throws to the outside and get some of these opportunities where you can get your quarterback into a rhythm doesn't Jackson Arnold does not look like he's getting into any sort of Rhythm right now which is troubling we talk about how how easy it looks for Nico all the time and how he just always looks like he's in Rhythm like no matter what the down a distance is it's like he's just always kind of that that cool guy seems very within the flow of the offense going through his progressions all these different things and Arnold does not have that yet he's taking the sat out there I never actually took the SAT I only took the ACT is that weird yeah no I thought that was a southern thing to just take the ACT but yeah I he just looks uncomfy he just looks like he's a pop quiz has just hit him in the zero period dude I'll tell you what they got to get figured out against tane because that Tennessee defense T Lane's going to be mad man tane kind of got cooked oh they had the opposite happen where it looked like they had a touchdown that like wasn't a touchdown so yeah I uh they two sides of the same safety basically so yeah if they don't get it for too Lane that could that could be a problem could be a problem all right let's close with this one before get to some overreaction versus proper reaction Mississippi State and Arizona State M this game ended up being Pack 12 after dark just like we said um unlike what we said Mississippi State well unlike what I said Mississippi state did not win this football game Arizona state was in total control will total control Mississippi state's defense did not have a pulse it was 27 to3 at the break it was 30 to3 late in the third quarter it was one of those games where I'm starting to do like I'm starting to do like my you know wrap-up stuff like big takeaways I do uh for the SEC um Shameless plug started on south.com and like putting podcast notes together and you're kind of like you're like all right I can put this kind of on in the background while I lock into what I'm doing here and they like um that's another defensive stop from Mississippi State oh they went down the field and scored okay they did it again um all right th whoa oh wow that just made it a one touchdown game and you're seeing all these Arizona State fans who are just not having it whatsoever and they're like are we about to blow this cuz it kind of feels like it but yeah the uh the the response was just a little bit too little too late and even though they did have the three unanswered touchdowns and actually turn into a 60-minute game just couldn't get those stops down the stretch and letting up 346 rushing yards not ideal not ideal to do that against a team that was picked to finish dead last in the Big 12 probably a bad Omen for SEC play for Mississippi State who knows maybe better days are ahead for that defense certainly didn't look like it I mean Arizona state was totally one-dimensional Sam levit is a one-dimensional quarterback they were not they were not insistent on throwing the football at all and they didn't have to but that's why I continue to say that this is 2018 Old Miss that that is the vibe of Mississippi State this year with lebby a few fun moments offensively that keep you entertained just like we saw when Kevin Coleman man he he hit the Jets on that touchdown uh that made it a one-score game but way too many holes in other areas to be anything more than like a five win team I think that's kind of the ceiling of this program and in a game like that that man I I I didn't think that they were going to be staring at that kind of a deficit I think Mississippi State fans were like oh yeah we've had a ton of defensive turnover and this is goingon to be really really rough year one for Jeff Levy yeah I uh so again I have the Corona virus this one I fell asleep about halfway through I'll be honest to you but um this running back over here what this gentleman just was playing on freshman like I don't understand how do you allowed this to happen he pretty he had like a a slide at the end too where he like could have probably gone into the end zone and scored or at least like maybe his only angle was getting out of bounds but he did like the cerebral thing of like sliding with a minute 50 left after a long run so he was that dialed in um yeah this this run defense buddy they're gonna have some issues they just are they don't have the dudes they don't have the dudes up front and that's fine again that that's that was never the goal for this Mississippi State team and I want that to be very very clear because there are probably not going to be a ton of Great Moments in SEC play but if you can have an offense that's just that's just fun and that shows some fight that's the positive for Mississippi state is that they're showing the temperature and Quint uh cenic is that how you say his name I always blank on how you say his name but he's like on the sideline he's got like The Ripped sleeves going with the dress shirt because it was 100 degrees or something like that the heat was just ridiculous you're on the other side of the country and you're thinking to yourself man we got a long flight home this is going to suck and they could have easily just mailed it in and that's that's the positive for Mississippi State but still when you get hit for over three bills like that on the ground against a team that's not expected to do particularly great things it's a sobering sobering reality and I think that's what Mississippi state is staring at cool yeah I am just I need to check out morea State Games good for them ah Kenny Dillingham uh had had some moments in this game where his face on the sideline is not not great it's it's just not it's it's here's the problem it's I could see that guy blowing this game face and you never want to have that as a head coach and some guys have it more than others I thought Gundy had it in spades on Saturday although he was against the one trailing in that one but um Kenny Dillingham definitely has um I I probably shouldn't be leading this this team right now Vibes although credit to him because they were ready to go and they're ultim be able to hold on to that one all right well let's close with some overreaction or proper reaction start with a a very big question here overreaction or proper reaction Alabama has big big offensive issues after delivering the single most deceiving final score in human history no everything's great everything's going according to plan the recruiting is awesome the offense looks great the offensive line Looks night and day different from last year I mean goodness this if if you are I I tweeted this out I'm like the code for uh if you say the words Alabama Cruise pass USF that's just code for I didn't watch this game because man um Alabama was in a dog fight and in the middle of the fourth quarter our guy Alex goish friend of the program love the FI gold man dude fourth and four dude he had everything going his way I was like brother you this is your moment just go for it and after that it was over like that was it I I want to be nice because I I love Alex gch I really do and I'm I'm very grateful that he's you know he's got to know him a little bit and he's like come on the show and he's been you know even conversation to have it off the Record yeah I I I think big things are ahead for him and I do find myself rooting for him that was such a James Franklin decision oh it pains me to say that that was such a James Franklin decision on Fourth and four when you're down eight to kick a field goal in that spot to make it 216 I didn't like it I did not like it one bit and I get some of it it's like all right well your defense is kind of your defense to that point had been stopping them and it' been doing everything you could have hoped for against Alabama and then instead don't you know it the 17-year-old wonderking Ryan Williams touched down the other way right after this one did you know he's 17 did you know he's 17 he should be at his high school prom there's another one yeah they're gonna say he's 17 after every single catch he's unbelievable I mean he is but still um Alabama just all of a sudden figur out late Alabama's got offensive issues because if that's what happens when Kaden Proctor isn't there and I don't even think Kaden Proctor has shown himself to be a serviceable SEC offensive lineman yet but if that's the shuffling this early in the season that's bad because Tyler Booker one of my favorite people to talk to at media days the heart and soul of that program he ain't a left tackle he's not and that that right tackle every single time Alabama had a big play you knew that it was holding it was either holding that they got called for or holding that they got away with I think these refs are just like brother like we look like we're fixing this game if we go holding on every play like we're going to let you get away with it half the time oh my gosh Alabama has has offensive issues to figure out I said as much as I believe that the Jaylen milro kayin dor relationship is going to work I predict milro would win the Heisman okay and I predicted Alabama was a playoff team I did say like I think they're going to be growing pains early on though those are big Growing Pains Big Time growing pains because man even the fumble that they had on the goal line where milro does the thing that everybody hopes their their quarterback does is just go for him under Center why take a shotgun when it's you know fourth and one or fourth and two or something like that and instead he can't handle the snap how much of that is on brailford how much of that is on milro I I don't know but it was a bad bad moment in that game and Alabama fans were just kind of stunned looking around like we're only up by one and it's the fourth quarter against these guys again they are never scheduling USF again I can guarantee as long as 26 wait they G him get in 26 yep oh my God I mean I don't want to say take USF money line too early for that whatever the spread is take USF whether I mean go probably would have to still be there which I don't think he will be by 26 um but man he gets him fired up he gets and I'm happy for my I I am happy for a gold that he showed that last year wasn't necessarily a fluke with what his team was trying to do that Todd Orlando defense man they did so many things to frustrate milro frustrated three different Bamba quarterbacks in a two-year stretch it's not a whole lot of people that can say that they they they've done that the USF defense deserves credit but man the Alabama offensive line buddy th those the tackles a problem and I don't know that Kaden Proctor just instantly fixes that yeah it's it's fascinating man and I think at the end of the day you know you got milro who feels like an instant offense right I I don't know why it's taken people so long I mean we've seen Bill O'Brien and and you know going all the way back like all these different offensive Minds look at him and not exactly it's like bro this guy's a fire hydrant just get him on the run and tell him to make one read and take off and I the when this team can't get an easy first down for some reason it just infuriates me because it's like guys milro is that guy like you don't have to do it like to your point about like the the under Center thing it's like if you just run a play for jayen milro it's gonna work like I I don't know why why we've taken all these different ways to just delay like against I I know LSU's defense was not good last year but the way they used him on third down last year against LSU was so perfect where it's like okay you're gonna Rumble forward and we're gonna make we're gonna make the other team tackle you and so yeah it's just crazy like I hope they figure that out because I think now they've gone the other way whereas like last year they're in the gridlocked offense he would do some stuff with his legs now it's like look we're going to show you that you can open it up and and be like a like a pocket passer it's like bro the every time that I'm scared of jayen milro he is like making one cut or making one read and taking off so yeah I don't know eventually I feel like that's GNA have to show its head where like because that's what he did last year he was just like look guys like I'm taking over this offense I'm taking over this team I'm not running these dumb plays so yeah it's it's very very interesting I my conspiracy theory about Alabama's Talent remains true do you think that cuz I this is what I was thinking is as those those play just weren't necessarily there in the office offense mhm is kayin neor and Nick Sheridan are those guys and I realized Nick Sheridan wasn't the primary play caller at Washington that was Ryan grub do you think they're still transitioning away from Michael penck of trying to protect the quarterback trying to not put him in those spots and they are forgetting the asset that they have in milro and understanding that ideally you don't want to run your quarterback 15 times against USF if you're going to be playing a 16 17 Game season you do not want him to take these kinds of hits early on in early September when you're trying to establish these other elements of your offense how much of that is still though man our last guy did not need that and we are still figuring out those moments in which okay we need to stop testing out this offense we need to go win a football game we need to go pick up a third down we need to be able to just say go make a play and I love the fact that milro kind of kept his eyes downfield I think it was was apprentic or Bernard who had the the touchdown on that ball that he just zipped in there um but that was like a nice show of growth in my opinion in those spots and there going to be those little moments here there but clearly whatever you want to call it there is still a figuring out process with with all of that and finding a way to make this work yeah I think you're right on the money there and yeah to your point I mean the offense got better after this game last year I really I truly don't think they ever figured it out I mean that final play of the season last year pretty much incap encapsulates it that was just duct tape on top of duct tape on top of band-aid and yeah I I think you're exactly right I think that you know if you have a quarterback that can't move and you're scared of protecting him then you transition to a guy like milro who is just made of concrete it's hard to like not have The Yips because you know every year that like when penck could finish a year they were awesome so it was like that was our biggest that was their biggest party was keeping him healthy whereas now it's like hey man you know sometimes you're just in a 13 14 game with USF sometimes you just need to run your quarterback that's just what it is pretending like you're not just makes it worse yeah all right let's end with a CLE with with a few here um all right overreaction or proper reaction Billy has no choice to start DJ lagway after he was brilliant here we are again man this is Anthony Richardson 2.0 isn't it I'm going to say it's an over reaction because Billy still has a choice and that's kind of the problem I mean start he's starting Ms he's starting merts when merts comes back I don't know how many starts like I'll I'll be stun if he starts like way I I'll never I'll never say never but I like I think Billy truly looks at what what lagway is doing and going man that's going to be awesome next year or the year after that I guess next year because mer is this is last year eligibility he's like can't wait to see that busted out in 2025 after I get a year four totally the throw that he made stepping up in the pocket where it was it wasn't a jump throw but he like kind of threw out of rhythm and the arm strength and how On Target that was on the right side to I was like I was watching that live and just going that's that's silly I don't care who you're playing against again like we talked about with Nico some of these throws would be ridiculous against air and DJ like the numbers that he put up were insane obviously it was a favorable matchup I still feel like we're gonna see Graham Merz when he's healthy now he's still in concussion protocol we we saw Billy afterwards say you know DJ's gonna be involved that's going to be the plan Ford fans don't get your hopes up that that all of a sudden changed Billy's mind I don't think he watched him play against an FCS team as brilliant as he looked and thought now I need to turn to this guy and I need to to to just put all my my eggs in that basket I just I know said but it's just so funny I so L this is Anthony Richardson it's just we've done all of this before and if you play him too early you do what you do with Anthony Richardson and you kind of break him a little bit so unfortunately guys the best thing that could happen is that guy could sit on the bench because you don't want Billy neb to be be your head coach so at the end of the day you want to keep that guy as far away from the field as possible then but then you lose lagway that's that's the issue like lagway committed to Florida because of Billy I know that's a very very odd thing to think about with the conversations we're having about lagway compared to the conversation that we're having about Napier right but that is 100% the case it is so so true that he put his faith in Billy Napier and I'm I'm not saying that it automatically means that you're not going to keep DJ lagway if you fire Billy Napier CRA things have happened but there is a reason why he bought in to his system his vision the timeline all of it and that is going to be in this era a big big Conversation Piece if billy gets fired again they they win this game they beat Samford going away which look a few years ago certain Dam Mullen can't say that he beat Samford going away but right so I guess that's one thing that Billy's Gott on on Mullen God this is so funny anyway moving on all let's how about uh overreaction or proper reaction Oregon is fraudulent proper reaction struggled in trenches Boise State down to the wire man down to the wire not great after struggling against Idaho yeah proper reaction okay then let's let's end with this one because this one's a little bit more intriguing Notre Dame's playoff path should end with that loss to Northern Illinois it should I mean will it I kind of think it's a proper reaction mhm um I'm looking at the rest of that schedule going and even if they went out that stench will linger linger and I mean think about how differently we're looking at that schedule now you lose to Northern Illinois oh my God I mean if they lose obviously like the the odds of Notre Dame now going 11 and one with that being their only loss with the offensive issues that they have Riley Leonard was not particularly good at all in this game I don't think we'll have to worry about that but it's more of Just A Conversation Piece so I'm gonna say proper reaction that one yeah I mean I love you know all the smart people of you know the favorite podcast I'm not going call anybody out but you know start Andy and Ari you know what they got cold tapes I love Ari Ari's good dude um look I was right there with him I said like how many teams would you put ahead of Notre Dame for their playoff path looked very favorable I'm saying you know all the all the people were going oh that Texas A&M game that was a game they wouldn't win a couple years ago oh my gosh they went in a college station and did all this well this is also a kind of game that would lose a couple years ago okay so yeah maybe May oh we can finally win the big one it's like Marcus Freeman is like once you can get like three steps away and look at him it's like oh my gosh I love this guy but then you got to get that three steps away it's so funny it's like people are running to go give this guy all this credit and then every year he has a game like this where it's like wow so you guys have lost to two Sun Bel teams H that's crazy uh not Sun Belt not Sun Belt on nor Illinois in the Mac people forget that sorry Mac teams yeah we we mustn't forget that um I've been to the Cal many a time uh fun fact my brother played for the Decalb County liners when he was playing summer baseball uh after his junior year of college and I went to a lot of those games I spit sunflower seeds on this Turf that they had that I'm sure those seeds are still stuck in that Turf somewhere were holding right there cleat out dude I would bring the biggest bag of seeds and just 20-year-old Connor did not care no care whatsoever um so to Cal lovely place um parts of my DNA all over to calb take that for however you want all right that'll do it week two in the books intriguing week it was wild weird week in college football as they always seem to be will they just always seem to be if you haven't leave us a five star review
