Intro First tonight we start in Newport News where a man is dead after an armed bank robbery turned into a police shooting 13 news. Now reporter Miles Hood shares what led to the deadly incident and where the investigation stands right now. Police shooting At a press conference Saturday afternoon, Newport News. Police chief Steve Drew shared details about a police shooting that left the man dead. The chief says 39 year old Steven Williams of Hampton and two others were involved in an armed robbery at a Navy Federal Credit Union along Jefferson Avenue. That individual uh displayed a firearm and uh robbed, robbed the bank there. The individual was given um a bag that contained undisclosed amount of money. The chief says officers responded to the call around 1149 by 11:54 a.m. He says police spotted the suspect's vehicle and cornered it inside of the Jefferson Avenue plaza. So his officers set there uh establish themselves and begin to give commands right? They did not approach the vehicle, they did have their weapons drawn. Um They gave commands for the driver to exit the vehicle. The video from Facebook showed Williams is the last to exit the vehicle, you see the back, uh, passenger door, uh, rear passenger door open, an individual gets out, um, in his hand is a firearm. Uh, he points that fire as he's getting out of the vehicle and out of the vehicle in the direction of the officers. After police shot at Williams. Medics rushed him to a hospital where he later died. The chief says while no one else was injured, he caused the loss of life. Significant. Unfortunately, we did have an individual that lost his life today. Miles Hood 13 news. Now Outro as of now, the two other suspects remain in police custody. The officers involved are on paid administrative leave until the investigation is complete.
