Lydia Martinez is one of several election volunteers who got the unwelcome knock. Nine officers from the Attorney General's office walked in. She says officers went through every drawer in her home and seized electronics. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's office says he opened investigations into potential voter fraud. He believes organizations are illegally registering people to vote. In a statement. Paxton says if eligible citizens can legally register to vote when conducting their business at a DPS office, why would they need a second opportunity to register with a booth outside Martinez says she simply helps seniors who are eligible to vote. I'm not doing anything illegal. I said I hand out voter registration and they said, how do you hand them out? I said I give it to the person. The includes Democratic candidate Cecilia Castellano who is running to be a state representative in South Texas. She is being questioned for election integrity. This is regarding a 2022 investigation. I was not in politics in 2022. She says officers went to her house in Atascosa County and took her cell phone. Castellano says this is a political move by PAX. This is just another way that the Republicans want to bully and want to silence me as a Latina. We reached out to her opponent, former Uvalde mayor, Don mclaughlin, he hasn't responded to us but told our partners at the Texas Tribune. I have not had any conversation with the Attorney General's office or the Attorney General mclaughlin denies the investigation is politically motivated to help him win.
