(upbeat orchestral music) [Maverick Hansen] To be a Spartan means grit, hard work, dedication. (upbeat hip-hop music) You're tired and you can't breathe, (crowd cheering) you gotta push through, you gotta run down the field and make a tackle, defeat a block. (crowd cheering) It’s who wants it more, right now! We gotta prove it. (crowd cheering) [Announcer] Recovered by number 97, Maverick Hansen! [Maverick] The will to get it done. No matter what it takes. (crowd cheering) [Announcer] Banged down right now, Maverick Hansen. (upbeat hip-hop music) (crowd cheering) [Raequan Williams] Maverick, how you feel, to be in New York right now? 'Cause I see you just been smiling the whole trip, you just... You ain't saying nothin’ just “I'm just grateful for everything," that's all you've been saying, man. Honestly, just soaking it all up, man. It's a great experience to come out, be out, you know, be outta my hometown for Christmas, you know, out here shopping with the boys, it's a time of a life, you know, I can't even think about anything else I'd rather do. Oh, man. (Raequan pounding chest) That's to the heart... Feel me? You feel me? [Person] Come on, Mav. Hey, hey. We love you too, man! We out! I came in with Coach Dantonio, which was awesome, you know, getting to play under him. He was a legendary coach, and growing up, I always really liked watching him. (people cheering) You know, you learn so much from these guys, they teach you things, not just about football, but things outside of football too. (upbeat hip-hop music) And now that we got Coach Smith, it's like a whole new program, you know, so it's awesome. First time meeting Mav, getting around him, you could totally sense how much Michigan State Football and this place means to him. Been here a while, gives his heart and soul to the place. And then, you know, as you get around him more and more, you can see his work ethic, his leadership, you talk about a great teammate, his care for others. Mav means a ton to this team, we're gonna count on him in a big way to help us really lead this group by his voice and by his example. [Maverick] I started football back in the backyard. My buddy Zach Simmons would always go out there and be like, "Hey, man, let's throw the football around," and everything, and then, one day he decides to tell me, he's like, "Man, you would..." "You should go out and try football." Taking that leap was one of those things where it was a lot of uncertainty whether I would actually do good or not. And I was really overweight, so I came in at 220 pounds, but the weight limit was 170 pounds. I spent, like, my entire time at the North Farmington West Bloomfield Vikings running every day at practice until I could get my weight down, and my mom was in my corner the whole time. (loud clicking) She was constantly in school trying to better herself, working extra jobs, you know, doing everything she possibly could to give us the best life possible. (loud clicking) So it really instilled a very hard work ethic in me. (uplifting orchestral music) I literally lost 50 pounds as a 12-year-old, so it was a big leap of faith for me as a person and as a player. (uplifting orchestral music) That truly did shape me as a man. I really truly got it from my mom, you know? So I owe her that. (cheering) (crowd cheering) Getting strapped up, you know, doing what I do best. Love the game, man. Gotta love this. Back at it. Yes sir came out with the goose egg as we wished, we got what we asked for. Can't ask for nothing more than that. [Maverick] Football, as much as I would love for it to last forever, it's not. Once this is all over with, I'm gonna have to fall back on my education that I got from here. I definitely feel like the hard work ethic does transfer off the field too, 'cause as a college athlete, you know, school's always been important to me. (uplifting orchestral music) My mom in my corner was always telling me, like, "You gotta push yourself in your classes. Do a little extra studying." And even though I wanted to go to bed, 'cause I was tired from practice or lifting or whatever I was doing. it's kind of shaped my whole career here, you know? (uplifting orchestral music) Like I said, this football thing is only so long, but striving for being a good person, being a good teammate, a leader, that lasts a lifetime.
