What to Know About the Rare But Deadly Mosquito-Borne Virus Concerning U.S. Towns

Easter neck wine and sephtis is short term is Triple E uh is a virus infection carried by mosquitoes that can cause uh very rarely causes disease in humans uh and when it does cause a infection is very very severe although it's a very rare infection we have no treatment for it uh to do this and if once someone gets it it's just just all we can do is provide supportive care and it can kill people well this is a virus which is present uh in the environment in uh Southern New England so there are cases in Massachusetts uh cases in Rhode Island cases in Connecticut uh tends to be areas that where there were a certain kind of mosquito lives that tends to be areas that used to be swamp land that's been converted and less swampy now but the mosquitoes still find good habitat we don't see activity every year in Massachusetts it tends to occur in outbreak Cycles our last outbreak cycle was 2019 through 2020 um and what we have seen over sort of the last you know 10 12 years is that we're starting to see increases of triple activity outside of the historic Hotpot um and we're concerned that that's due to a couple of factors including some of the the climate change likely climate change effects like a warming temperature changes in migratory bird patterns um and and changes in prec precipitation activity as well so we work very hard to make sure people are aware of where and when triple is happening and make sure they understand the steps that they can take to help protect themselves including using a mosquito repellent anytime they're outside when it's not super hot you can use clothing to reduce Exposed Skin and then in areas where triple risk is very elevated so not the entire state but parts of the state we make a recommendation that people avoid outdoor activity between the hours of Dusk and Dawn
