thank you so much Jim for the time coming on our little show thanks for having me I appreci appreciate it yes of course so let's get to some news and notes Jim just your first thoughts on the biggest story of the week we touched on it I think we talked about it a little bit on Monday but it was not yet confirmed whether or not Dante Corleone will be back fully practicing this week we were kind of getting a sense that might happen but it did happen on Tuesday Neil and I were out there to me it seemed like the normal Dante corleon we don't have confirmation as of this recording that he would be playing on Saturday just he has been cleared for games but not necessarily activated for Saturday's game Jim I I would be a little surprised if we don't see Dante out there given what we saw on Tuesday but obviously the medical stuff you got to clear all those bars leading into kickoff at noon on Saturday overall though I think I think Dante looked great and it seems like he's ready to go to me yeah I think you're right and you know knowing that he was going to be out for a little bit he did the right things when he was away from being able to be out there on the field um where he was able to go 100% in particularly in contact drills he kept himself in shape and um that that's a good thing and um I think what we'll see is and I'm not sure internally what they're going to do but tomorrow they'll probably do some vitals on him and just make sure that everything stay in the same and once that happens and I I think it will they'll go ahead and clear him and we will we will definitely see him the one thing that I will say is I don't know how much he'll play but that being said they like to rotate those defensive line guys a lot anyway so if he's in there 15 20 25 plays I think that might be a a really good start for Dante and we as we all know he's a differen maker and some of the things we saw last week um against talson uh they certainly could use a run clogger in there so I think he's going to make a difference and it's uh it's great to see him back and he's been phenomenal for the game and a and a phenomenal captain in Bearcat along the way with all this going on Neil he looked pretty good to us didn't he yeah most certainly he really looked like he was back to the old self there for Dante corleon so that was a great sight to see but overall you could sense the morale was up a little bit for Dante corleon to come back and that was the big thing that they really needed the energy boost there yeah no doubt about it and I think from the rest of the team's perspective you know they they knew everything we knew which was he was supposed to be back this week we knew we suspected he wasn't going to play in the opener but he would be ready for the pit game and they they kind of knew that but like all of us they were waiting for that final word to say okay you know he's cleared to go and the Boost and morale not only for for Dante but for the rest of the squad as well knowing that he's going to be back out there and to Jim's point that was a great Point bringing up the rotation we had a three-man rotation at the nose tackle spot from UC this past Saturday and Kamari Burns cam Rutherford and Harris Adams you had about 33 snaps out of burns 32 snaps out of Rutherford and 10 snaps out of Adams I'm guessing the staff would like to see maybe 15 to 20 of those Rutherford and burn snaps go to Dante this weekend you keep a similar snap diet to Harris Adams I thought he played well he he graded out very well on PFF did a good job getting a pass rush push in there so I think another 10 to 15 snaps can be warranted for Harris Adams Then you kind of split up those other 60 snaps that you saw 65 snaps that you saw from Kamari Burns and cam Rutherford overall though that just it completes the defensive line rotation so much more than than what they've had access to over the first 75ish snaps of the season so far so big news for Cincinnati getting Dante corleon back on the field knock on wood hopefully see him out there on Saturday all signs pointing to that happening although as of this recording we have not had that completely confirmed by the UC coaching staff UC medical staff just confirmed that he will be practicing this week a guy who has been practicing very well and he used it that practice those practice reps to perform very well is Brendan sorby he was the newcomer of the week for the Big 12 really really great performance 22 a 31 out there for what 383 yards a couple of touchdowns Neil and I talked about how he had I think I think it was PFF gave him two drops out there for his receivers so an 80% adjusted completion percentage overall Brendan sorby I think answered every question you could ask out of him in the first game of the season outside of just throwing throwing throwing a 100% accurate pass rate he didn't do that but he did a very good job of of dividing the ball between his receivers working through his progressions and doing enough to win that big 12 newcomer of the week award was the fifth highest graded Bearcat on the offense with a 75.8 overall grade strong strong debut for Brendan sorby and Jim I think this is a guy that still has a lot of uh even higher ceiling he could hit not necessarily I don't know if he's gonna throw for 380 plus yards again this season but overall down to down especially in the running game I think he could be even more impactful in that sense well I would agree with you you mentioned he threw for two touchdowns he also rushed for two now one of them was a two yard run the other one was a 13 yard run but those were great runs but what I like okay so you mentioned the 22 for 31 and that there was a few drops yeah Xavier Henderson I think had two that were very catchable balls so that takes it let's say both those were caught that takes him 24 for 31 there was a screen pass that um was going to be set up uh for Corey ker and he was totally covered and sorby very wisely threw the ball right at Ker's feet to avoid you know throwing it into traffic Andor uh you know getting some sort of problem so yeah that was a veteran play right there very heads up play it told me something about him right there because he was having a heck of a day at that point he had 200 yards in the first quarter um and he started eight for nine too which is a crazier yeah exactly and the one of those was the one was the one little uh quick screen pass that they had on sorby or I'm sorry on H Xavier Henderson that he dropped it and I don't say dropped the ball went through his hands was thrown a little high and a little hard maybe but that's where you want that ball if you go back and you look the Bearcat teams have been successful on that little inside wide receiver screen I have to go all the way back to Tony Pike and Marne Gillard and' 08 no nine they made that play look so easy and part of that the biggest part of it not the biggest but one of the big parts of it is the quarterback putting it in the right spot so that the wide receiver doesn't have to stop he can keep his momentum going forward so out in front of him and a little bit High where you can literally not only catch the ball a little high you get a little bit of view what's going on and if you go back and you look at that play Joe Royer and I one of the old linemen and I don't know which one they were out there blocking that was a touchdown that was a and I don't remember exactly where the play took place but um all in all I mean Brendan sorby I thought you know we all had expectations and we all really didn't know what to uh you know what to expect um but man he checked a lot of boxes for me but Russ to your point I think there's a higher bar there than he can accomplish well and I agree with you 383 is a a lot of yards um and there will be a game when Cincinnati is maybe stifled a little bit in the Run game and will have to throw the ball so I'm not saying it's impossible for him to to hit those numbers again it's not but um there was probably some plays and I know that he mentioned on Monday or Tuesday rather I'm sorry and then Coach saterfield mentioned both that there was a play or two that he maybe had the wrong read that he could have made but all in all we all knew and saw all summer long and all spring long he throws a beautiful deep ball and he sure showed that on um on Saturday the the one Xavier Henderson was absolutely beautiful and then the one thing I liked about the one to bural her yeah it was a broken defense and he was wide open and I think I think Neil Meyer could have thrown that touchdown pass but uh that being said what you didn't you know what what was part of that play was him breaking containment um not settling in the pocket rolling to his left you being a right arm quarterback not the easy throw in the world although Burke cder was was wide open but but made the throw and got the touchdown out of it so all in all I thought he did a phenomenal job yeah sby Neil Neil it felt like sorby played like a 50 to 55o Performance for the offense and just some plays here or there left them with a 38 point total at the end yeah no absolutely I thought Brendan swords really looked Poise in the pocket that's the biggest thing that you can really take away from him is the Poise that he looked like he had in the pocket I mean he was going through all of his progressions I mean that was something that Cincinnati lacked a season ago and that was with emry Jones so overall you get an opportunity there I mean the third there was times where Brendon sorby was sitting in the pocket and he was going through reads one through three one through four and then coming back to his first read there and that's something that Cincinnati hasn't seen and going on since the time since Dez was here so that was a great sight to see but overall the biggest thing was the Deep balls Jim mentioned that ball to Xavier Henderson was beautifully thrown that was in a great position great area for Xavier Henderson to really go up there and make a play and only a play where he would be able to make that catch there but overall I think the biggest thing was too you guys talked about there was an opportunity there and sat coach saterfield and Brendan even themselves even said there was an opportunity there where they felt like they could have put up 50 points on the board obviously one of those drives gets stalled early in the first quarter on the Muff punt by Michael musari and for those who are kind of talking about the Muff punt I think all three of us could attest that Michael Masari caught about everything at fall Camp so that was just the one that was just the tough scenario the tough scenario where he dropped the Muff the punt but overall I thought Brendan sorsby looked really well he lived up to expectations and exceeded some but overall to see him us sit in the pocket go through his progressions and really make the great decisions what's great to see well you mentioned the pocket and you mentioned being able to go through through his read what what's unsaid and what you just said there is the great job that the offensive line did yeah um and one of the things going in we knew that they could run the football and they were great run blockers uh but last year at times they were a little LAX in their pass blocking I thought they gave sorby a tremendous amount of times and I agree with you Neil I watched him you could literally see you know if you could have looked into his brain you would see the gears going one two three okay I'm going back one but he had time to do that so I I I really give the offensive line a huge assist on the passing game this week this past week ton of things to build off of and some mistakes to clean up I think that's that's kind of what you want to have coming off of a game one you don't want everything to go perfect you want to have some stuff to build off of some stuff to teach off of obviously would like a little bit wider margin than 38 to 20 yeah a chance to to Really to really kind of clean those things up this weekend against pit and a tight tight matchup we'll get to that right now after these messages on Bearcat Blitz coming back with UC football color commentator Jim Kelly and Neil Meer following these messages stick with us everybody Russ Helman Neil Meer with you all your usual co-hosts here on bearcap Blitz and we are welcome welcoming on a really really great guests love talking with Jim Kelly about UC football just got done kind of rehashing all the events of the past week let's look forward to Saturday hit coming to town basically a one and a half point spread doesn't get much closer than that it's it's a one to one and a half point spread that it's it's a it's a moneyline bet if you go below one point there with a total that has climbed from 53 and a half fellas all the way up to 62 and a half in the last five days you rarely see us Sports books get a line wrong as as much as the public thinks that they got that line wrong to start this one people expecting points in this game and rightfully so so coming off of a performance from the Pittsburgh Panthers where they beat up on Kent State 55 24 held them to just 31 yards rushing on the ground 181 yards through the air and on the flip side Eli Holstein secured full control of that quarterback job 30 of 40 through the air 33 yards three touchdowns and Desmond Reed the Western Carolina transfer has just been hand inand with the new offensive coordinator from Western Carolina at Pittsburgh and it is looking like that that combination is going very well for pit Desman Reed 14 carries 145 yards and one touchdown the small Speedy back 5 foot eight 175 yards to go with a 78 yard punt return too fellas so this Pittsburgh team to me is much more Dynamic offensively than they were were last year they have a weapon in the Special Teams game that they didn't have last year and they seem like a much more formidable opponent than the pit team you see took on last year and I believe won 23 to6 against we'll start with Jim looking at the kind of defensive side of the ball going up against this Eli Holstein and uh and K who am I looking for Desmond Reed Desmond Reed Leed offense at the running back position what is kind of the biggest thing you're looking for out of this defense on Saturday to slow them yeah no no doubt about it I mean so the the parallels between Cincinnati's offense in game one and Pittsburgh's offense in game one are are unbelievable you had quarterbacks making their first starts for those teams both with great games you had a little bit different in the running back basically Desmond Reed with the 145 yards on 14 carries over 10 yards and carry um you know with the big in Cincinnati kind of they had four guys over 50 yards so but that but then you got a an incumbent wide out Kenny Johnson had seven catches for 105 yards where on the other end xer Henderson had seven catches for 101 yards so very close uh when you look at the stats the one thing that I don't know how good is Kent State and it's a first game so you really don't know um so for really bad last year one and 11 in 23 so yeah they were very very poorly uh team in 2023 so well and and the one thing that is I went through the the kind of the game cap recap pit in um in Kent State you look kind of I'm going to say five minutes into the third quarter it was 28-21 or something like that it was a it was a one- score game now you could make the you could make the argument so was Cincinnati against talson at one point it was an eight-point game so you know they did break it open and that's where I think Cincinnati's offense could be a little better their Red Zone numbers last year were horrible and three out of five this week you'd like to see a little bit more of course one of those was a Miss I don't know if that was a Red Zone but the Miss field goal um you know certainly didn't help but anyway going back to where C Cincinnati's offense can um Can can make some you know make some plays against Pittsburgh I think they're able to do that the one thing about Pat Nardi and of course he was here on Mark Antonio's staff as the defensive coordinator um and I can tell you back at those days I said to myself I have never seen a defensive coordinator be this aggressive um in reference so you go back to the heroi Nakamura and that team that I guess it was' 05 and they were playing young guys and they took their pounding in 04 and they grew up in ' 05 and by 06 they were a really really good football team and that was because of his aggressiveness now he settled down a little bit but he's still very aggressive and of course he's not the defensive coordinator he's the head coach but he conveys that philosophy to his D coordinator and they're still very I I think they're still very active that way so what does that mean I think you know that's where Brendan sorby can raise that bar he's going to have to make some plays there's going to be some Blitz packages that he hasn't seen um he's going to have to hang in there pit did get five sacks uh against Kent State um and that's a lot in one game um but at the same time they gave up for it we're not talking about their offense yet but they gave up four so they're they're vulnerable from that standpoint but I think we're going to see sorby you know H have to make some plays and then secondly I think the running game gets needs to get going a little bit earlier this week um you have to throw the ball great that's fine certainly got a lot of weapons um you know we've talked about Henderson we've talked a little bit not much yet about Joe Royer and the receiving side um but those are two big weapons and quite honestly in between there you've got another five or six wide outs they can really do a nice job so I think they're going to have to play well they're going to have to keep their eyes open all the time they're going to need to make some plays against some Blitz packages Corner blitzes safety blitzes obviously maybe six man seven man front where they're sending two or three guys to try to outnumber you but all in all what I saw out of sorby he really you guys I think said it perfectly he looked very in control out there and he's going to need to do that this week as well yeah I think the biggest importance is keeping Brendan sorby upright in the pocket you don't want him to take all these hits obviously Pittsburgh is a team that even Scott saterfield alluded to as one of the most elite pass rushing teams they are Relentless in was the phrase that Scott safield used in terms of getting to the quarterback so if you can find a way to really lock in and protect Brendan sorby have another solid performance from the offensive line like they had on Saturday I think that's going to be the biggest key but overall you just have to find a way to protect Brendan sorby there up front on the offensive side of things and if you can do that and take advantage of the opportunities that you're there and Brendan even said himself following talson that you take what the defense has giving you you don't want to try and be too aggressive and try to force some things but play conservative take what the defense gives you and if they do that they play smart with the ball I think Cincinnati could be in good hands but overall it's just how you protect Brendan sorsby up front yep yeah look at look at Pittsburgh last week pass rush look was pretty solid 71 1.5 PFF grade on the pass rush against kit multiple sacks as you guys mentioned and then in the passing game for me kind of ties into into my biggest key it's kind of a both on both fronts it's it's the explosive plays they have to take advantage like you mentioned Jim of the aggressiveness of pit there's gonna be some gaps in the secondary some gaps in the second and third level when they bring these Blitz packages that Cincinnati can take advantage of that's right and can this offensive line like you mentioned they look looked better pass protecting last week albe it against talson can they prove that against a power conference pass rush this week in s in the sense that the same group with the same starting five given that Philip Wilder probably would have been the starter over DeAndre Buford but we're unlikely to see him again this week so it's going to be the same starting five that was out there against pit last year out there against pit again this year can they continue to gel together as a pass blocking unit which is historically when you look at football and offensive lines carrying over year-to year the hardest thing to get together on the same page on is pass blocking and the more reps you have together the more you can gel the better you should get and so you should think throughout the rest of this month throughout the entire college football season for UC that their pass blocking should be much better and allow them to hit those explosive plays more and more but when you look at look at Pittsburgh overall they give up a lot of explosive 16.2% explosive play rate allowed last season which is kind of the biggest data set we can go off of that was 113th nationally according to PFF and they're they were 27th nationally and successful play rate allowed so they don't allow a lot of long drives they don't allow you to pair together a lot of successful plays but they did give up a lot of explosives last year Brendon sorby his deep ball Acumen that we saw this past weekend that we saw him use very well at times at Indiana that could be important and that could flip this game in the end when we get to our predictions here but taking a quick break get to a couple defensive keys make a prediction after this with UC radio color commentator Jim Kelly and Neil Meer your hosts of be Keets here on the believe Network presented by bet online offensively Jim where do you think the bear cats kind of need to buckle up against defensively I should say defensively against this Pittsburgh offense led by Eli Hol scene we got done talking about the dynamic dynamic impact that Desmond Reed had in his first game as a panther just almost 200 plus yeah over 200 allpurpose yards right right he seems like the number one piece of electricity they have to find a way to shut down well you mentioned um he came from Western Carolina Kate Bell the new offensive coordinator was uh from Western Carolina as well so those guys know each other well and and and certainly Kate Bell knows what Desmond Reed can do um and I think so let's talk about the 335 defense and Tyson bite being the new defensive coordinator um the first time I had seen it really paid attention to it was the Iowa State game last year where Iowa State Tyson B of course was on that staff at that point as the linebacker coach first time I had seen it and now Iowa state had been running it for a few years and I looked at it and I'm I'm thinking to myself okay if I'm if I'm playing what I played at the time and the defenses were a little bit different but same amount number of guys out there right so I'm thinking if I'm a wide out what do I like about this and what do I not like about it what what I didn't like about it was if I'm coming across the middle and I'm looking at safeties which are normally a little bit bigger than what safeties normally are um at least for I State they were I'm going like yeah well I'm going to make sure I'm going to get the snot knocked out of me uh but at the same time there's kind of that underneath you meant Russ you mentioned the second and third levels before that second level creates some spaces and some windows to find an area to settle into um so I think what Pittsburgh they're probably looking their chops right now and I have to go I didn't you know Watch the watch a replay of the game but coach saterfield said we had guys there but we didn't make we were out of position or didn't make some plays um he felt that the defense really played pretty good from a from my perspective it looked like they gave up some big plays that they probably shouldn't have but if it was just one guy out of position or two guys out of position and that's a correctable thing then good correct it um but I think Pittsburgh's sitting back going we can really move the ball on these guys so and you mentioned Reed Desmond Reed and those numbers just jump out at you 10 10 yards a carry um I think they'll try to hit him you know real early and then Holstein those numbers are really good too and we talked about Kenny Johnson with the seven catches a guy that had a good game against sinc Dy last year was the Pittsburgh tight end Gavin Bartholomew he had and he had five catches against Kent State so they've got some offensive weapons so I think you're gonna have to tighten it up and I think from the Run perspective U Pittsburgh's going to certainly try to run so you know and I thought Jared Bartlett had a pretty decent game there was a couple of other linebackers obviously um um you know that that that are in there that um I I think you know with a three-man front corleon certainly going to draw some attention if they're trying to run the ball more than likely it'll be a center and a guard on him um which frees up some space in there for some other people but I think you just need to play a solid defense don't try to get too fancy stop the run make Holstein throw the football the fact that they off defensive line was not great last year and gave up four sacks in the first game I think that speaks well that you could maybe put some pressure on Holstein and get to him and certainly make him throw the ball away if you can't get to him Neil what do you think yeah most certainly I think if Cincinnati can get some pressure there obviously Dante depending on the snap count that he gets that should be able to really kind of open things up for the defense but obviously in the 335 it's going to be interesting because obviously the second and the third level on Saturday yes they had the explosive play where the guy beat mcki Miller in one-on-one where he outran everybody for the touchdown on Saturday there tson but overall the 335 if you can get some pressure to the quarterback I think you really have a solid group of linebackers and a great secondary behind you where the second and third level could make some plays but it's going to be interesting because obviously teams who saw that 335 last year at IA State has really struggled and teams have struggled against that Iowa State 335 defense for the last 10 or so year so it's going to be interesting to see what pit will like to do obviously their offense is kind of unique obviously Jim mentions Gavin Bartholomew he had a great uh game versus last year but pit does like to go fast and quick offense they're going to spread everything out so it's going to be interesting to see how does that 335 adjust so that's going to be the one thing to take away but with in order for the defense to have a big day it really starts up front there on the defensive uh defensive line yeah and Neil you bring up a good point they they want to run a play every 17 seconds they want to they want to be over 885 plays a game and the last person I heard throw that number out was Brian Kelly when he was at Cincinnati now Brian Kelly's offense now is a lot slower more more methodical uh but back then it was kind of a hurry up situation so here the question is and and they do substitute a little bit but obviously if you're going to run Tempo offense you got to keep the same 11 guys on the field um because that does not allow the defense to substitute where the beat last week I I a couple of times um talson literally took the lay of games or had to call timeouts because they substituted late which allowed Cincinnati substitute late and one of the things being taught by the Bearcat staff is run off the field as slow as you can because they're going to let you get to the sideline and sometimes they'll reset the clock and other times they don't um but in this particular case Pittsburgh tries to do it without substitution so early in the season here how tired do those guys get can they stay with that Tempo offense for you know an entire half or at least you know into this well deep into the second quarter before they start spelling guys in there pretty simple for me I'm I'm kind of leaning the same way as Neil is it's it's UPF front obviously the trenches matter greatly every single game that goes without saying the closer you are to the football at the line of scrimmage the more impact you're going to have on the game but it's more so in this one for me because of just how much of a mismatch this could be with a fully ready to roll Dante Corone not necessarily a full snap diet but a fully healthy Dante Corleone that can give you that same kind of Dante burst for 10 to 15 snaps and they're going to need it like you guys mentioned the fast-paced offense the no huddle offense I think it's going to require four bodies up front in the middle of that defensive line to be able to keep Pace with this group a group on the other side of a fiveman unit on the offensive line that's not great they were the low second lowest graded offensive line by PFF in the power conference ranks last year they only had a 54.1 run block grade this past weekend 72.7 they did not play very well against the Kent State defensive line that I wouldn't put even close to the kind of ceiling that Cincinnati's defensive line can now access with Dante coron so to me getting quick pressure in the Run game quick pressure in the pass game from that point of attack nose tackle position is going to be the biggest key for me and and Jim it's why going into the season the the availability of Dante corleon was going to flip this game prediction for me I would have picked Pittsburgh if I didn't think Dante was going to play in this game I think he's gonna play I think he's gonna play a decent amount of snaps so I'm going 3331 UC what do you guys got before we get out of here real quick well I I would say two things everything in 3331 is really the type of score that that that I'm expecting I think that if you look at the two offenses and what they're capable of scoring against a decent defense both of them are playing against a def decent defense I would say I you know and I as far as a number yeah 34 31 somewhere in that range everything points to this being a very very close game little concerned with the uh kicking game for Cincinnati and Carter being a little nicked up during the summer and missing that field goal and I don't remember exactly you guys probably know that the distance that was yard what was it 38 38 yeah it wasn't a long kick and um he just did not get it so I I look if they're solid in that particular end of it certainly Cincinnati wins this game by a field goal and 34-31 is what I would say yeah I'm going right there with you Jim I I was thinking 34 31 as well but I'm going in favor of Cincinnati as well but it's going to be a close game you have two high-powered offenses it's going to come down to which defense gets the final stop and which defense holds tough so whichever defense prevails at the end whether that's Cincinnati or that's pit it could be a tossup it could go either way but I'm going Cincinnati 3431 in this one okay well high scoring game expected and a lot of fun had with color commentator for UC football Jim Kelly thank you so much Jim for coming on this week's show and uh good luck with the broadcast this weekend great thanks Russ and Neil appreciate you guys having me thanks AB we go ahead and sign off from here this has been Bearcat Blitz presented by bet online right here on the
