a win is a win I guess we're going to overreact to a lot of things of course A lot of it I think is going to be somewhat Justified and then we're not going to overreact and even that might surprise a you all so much for tuning in to a post game instant reaction episode of lockdown Spartans your team in green and white five days a week please rate review subscribe comment below how you are feeling about that one give us your biggest overreaction because we're going to have a lot of thoughts on that week one when let's not get lost here it was a win at the end of the day even though it may not have seemed like that on one side of the ball but yeah leave that below or if you want to reach out email lockon Spartans gmail.com and if this is your first time listening you're wondering where the hell is is this guy no we're not in the fancy Studio that's right this is a road game for yours truly but hey you know what we're going to make it work and of course I couldn't stay away from a microphone for too long we're gonna talk about this one and guys let's start on a positive note here and if this went sideways if Florida Atlantic if Florida Atlantic excuse me did storm down the field did get that last touchdown did win you would not be hearing any positivity out of us let's uh let's not get to Twisted here but they won so we're going to start with the good things that we are going to overreact to and the first thing is lost in all of this and maybe I'm to blame for some of this because a lot of us are so excited about this offense because so many people have talked about the new quarterback hey it's an offensive coordinator whose name is not Jay Johnson this is going to be a new beginning for the offense while that was kind of a dud of course we're going to talk about that later lost in all of this is how strong that defense was today I get it it's FAU okay that's a group of five team that's a group of five team that was replacing nine starters on offense a group of five team that was replacing four starters on the offensive line what's most important here is that Michigan State made it look like that they made it look like they were the power four team going against a group of five team and we know it isn't always like that flip the script our offense against their defense certainly didn't look like that so at least one side of the ball aced the test and and the group specifically there's actually two of them that aced it the most I'm going to go with the secondary here for number one and Michigan State fans you guys know we are starved for a secondary that could play even just average talk about shooting for the moon here uh we don't need the no fly zone immediately just like that under Joe Rossy our new defensive coordinator we just need something that's gonna keep us somewhat within ball games here and you saw that right off the bat cam fer was having a hard time finding open receivers many of those sacks were coverage sacks so right off the bat you get your Ed Woods is of the world your nikai Martinez's your transfer guys they had early impacts especially after some of your Main Stays like Malik Spencer he had to bow out of the game a little early good all Hands-On deck performance from the secondary and no unit was more handson deck than that defensive line my goodness gracious they collectively might be the MVP of this game and they acce the test and I'm sorry I keep on using that phrase but truly like we went into this game saying all right we're looking for three things that have to absolutely get done these are non-negotiables one of them was you have to stop Florida Atlantic on the run now of course that's a two-fold thing one it's just to win this game but also two you know show that the question marks about the front seven going into this season aren't as drastic as they may seem that you actually can stop the run starting at your group of five team that you're opening with right off the bat 2.8 yards per carry is what the owls were held to and it even sounded it even felt like less than that on top of that too guys did not see this a lot last year the pass rush all right and again all hands on deck Kent tally my goodness gracious we we got a mailback question earlier this week about Hey where's Kent tally gonna fit on this defense I said I don't know the former fourstar kid transfers from Penn State he's kind of that tweener position not really in the-middle defensive lineman not really an edge rusher maybe he's going to be used on third Downs for pass rush situations well it turn out that maybe turned into actually certainly what was the case here and what benefited Michigan State certainly not the only star of this game Chris Bogle you know what we've been talking about him having a Resurgence under a new defensive scheme he's been talking all offseason about hey you know what felt a little static last year this new defensive scheme is going to loosen us up a little bit and have us playing better ball well you saw that very early on from him Anthony Jones the transfer from Indiana he had a very nice play late and then well how about just your interior defensive line to guys dquan D the transfer from Georgia Tech now we were pretty high on this pickup we didn't think that it was going to be you know an instant okay you just plug him in for Derek Harman or Simeon Barrow but you saw at Georgia Tech last year in their three toughest games we're talking against ol Miss North Carolina and Georgia well that's when he statistically had his best three games can he bring that kind of momentum and energy and production all season right off the bat I would say so starting with that safety and also just throughout the game that he really brought that noise got to see Ben Roberts in there Alex Van suer and we're gonna wait to see more out of those guys of course but yeah just a tremendously strong game from that front and of course the linebackers too but that was never really an issue going into the season very very far from a question mark was that line backer spot number two as far as things we are going to overreact to on the good side of things believe me guys if you're one of the panic Spartans out there if you're an Oregon State fan or Michigan fan that's waiting for good old Matt to melt down here segment two again it was 16 to10 it's not like we beat the breaks off these guys but it was 1610 thankfully because of Kon Lynch Adams we have been talking up and down about this guy throughout the off season season because what does he do he gets yards after contact and will what unfortunately again get to this in a little bit oh God what does this offensive line like to do to the running backs give them contact as soon as they touch the ball seemingly so KRON Lynch Adams did not seem to face him on that touchdown run Steven Brooks actually pointed this out too on Twitter That was supposed to go to the seag Gap That was supposed to be to the outside but his vision he saw a lane you can drive a school bus through and he was all but untouched the guy nicked his ankle like 20 yards away from the end zone but that that was a no doubt touchdown right when he saw that hole it was far from just that moment though hit in the back field in the second half still gets a four-yard pickup out of it and yeah you're seeing a solid running back and is it time to overreact and say well Nathan Carter running back one your time is up I'm actually GNA shock some people right now that actually might be an overreaction to not overreact to that I'm spinning a web right now I don't think that was all Nate Carter's fault it's undoubtedly true anyone with even one functioning eyeball could tell you that KRON Lanz was the better running back this game but guys if if you DVR this game and I plan on doing this too of course but even in the moment you're see Nathan Carter get the ball and being met by a sand color jersey or whatever off shade color of white that was that FAU brought um was I'm getting a call here you you saw him get hit almost immediately like it no favors whatsoever again we're going to get to that here but it just didn't seem to matter for Kon Lynch Adams so if you're out there saying that hey that is your number one running back well I can't blame you too much so guys I that's where I'm at right now with the overreactions I just got two of them one the defense looked really good and that should should not be ignored um number two KRON Lynch Adams okay he is worth being hyped up about now let's say this keeps happening weeks two weeks three um yeah okay then we're gonna have the conversation about making a Changing of the Guard but yeah I just thought Nathan Carter was given no help and KRON Lynch Adams lot lot of that hay on that one run but even after that like he he was superb here guys we're gonna overreact to uh if you're here for the negatives of that game if you want to sound off about you know what you didn't like from that game comment below on YouTube or reach out to us lockdown Spartans gmail.com but first guys need to talk your ears off about 5our energy now if you're like me thank you so much for making lockdown Spartans part of your game day here uh or just every single day this week guys if this is your first episode yes we are sick enough to do this every day throughout the week and well so do the fine folks at locked on college football go make them your second listen fantastic host over there Spencer mcclaflin he's going to bring you up to speed on everything week one and Beyond now before we overreact to the negative right now you're probably wondering when is this guy going to finally talk about the guy that he's been building up all off season this quarterback that I've been excited to watch when is he gonna let's do that right now let's make a sandwich right here we just overreacted to the really good things we're GNA overreact to the really bad things and I know Charles did not look good in that second half believe me I have two functioning eyeballs I've watched the game of football before I know what bad quarterback play looks like I've been a Michigan State fan my entire life uh and we also know what good quarterback play looks like and we know that it wasn't just that yet but guys maybe this is going to be something that you are so sick of hearing because we talked about this throughout the week we said that if it is a slow start for Aiden Childs actually not going to overreact to that and I still maintain that being my thought process here second half again like let's not mince words like that was not great they struggled to get first downs and the rare spot they did actually get first downs well it ended in what we all thought at the time at least watching on TV with no other Spartan in the frame was going to be a pick six not the greatest decision with the football but what is Jonathan smithman talking about all off season and I hate to sound like Mr told you so but like what have we also talked about this week is it's going to take some time so yes not a great game I'm not going to overreact to it and saying Michigan State Should Jam him in a FedEx box and send him back to corval he is no good he is Joe Milton 2.0 now does this mean it's automatically just going to turn around it and everything's going to be good no I'm a fan I'm not an idiot guys of course there's a reality where this doesn't all work out but first game newly minted quarterback young guy the pressure of being the guy in front of a soldout stadium it I'm gonna give him some time and we're gonna take a time capsule for us Michigan State fans if this is your fifth time hearing it this week I'm sorry you know where I'm going with this how was Conor cook in that offense's first game in 2013 I remember not being too thrilled with that I remember some Damen Cherry Damen Terry chance kind of around that era of Michigan State football you have to give new quarterbacks some time what we do also know about Aiden childes though is that the floor is going to be a little higher than it was last year and I understand that the bar was set oh basically halfway to China like that's how beneath earth's crusted is for good quarterback play here but you see it with the zip on his throws the lawn balls need some work we'll get to that play calling here I'm sure in a little bit if I could remember to bark about that but you see him extend plays solid with the scramble I'm comfortable with where Aiden childes is at even after that game is there going to be growing pains of course that was unfortunately in the second half with that interception namely h a big growing pain that he will have to go through but hey hopefully just like Jonathan Smith and what we've seen from Aiden child cool calm collected okay no losses only lessons let's move forward on to Maryland now what we are going to overreact about in a negative way oh boy um we had some question marks here about this offensive line and in the first segment we talked about in our pregame show that there were three things that we had to absolutely see well the other two were about the offensive line one was pass protection which I thought was actually okay today that's not where of course we're going with this the first thing that we started the pregame show with was you have to move the ball against Florida Atlantic okay I don't care that they returned six guys from last year's team you are the power for offensive line going up against a group of five offensive line this crap happened last year against Central Michigan where it didn't look great on the ground and you can kind of see throughout the rest of the season even just there W in your seat at opening week that oh this might not work out well against other physical Big 10 teams what we saw today less than inspiring less than inspiring and it's almost more concerning that it came from the inside runs that they tried because well where did the big-time transfers come from the inside of the offensive line I'm gonna try to not just you know Mark it off as a complete foregone conclusion that the Run game is going to be horrible specifically on the inside but man I I'd be lying to you if I said I wasn't completely jaded from what we saw last year and even the year before that it's been some pretty gnarly offensive not gnarly in a good way gnarly offensive line play here in the last few years and this is the reason why Michigan state was at four and a half is what we kept talking about this off season is that you feel good about everywhere else on the field except well the defensive line has some question marks although they looked pretty good today and the offensive line those are two of the arguably most important positions in college football you sure sure you could look at the box score and say oh Michigan State they ran for 4.8 yards per carry what are you all riled up about Matt I guys in the first half they had five runs that went over five yards one of them was of course that brilliant touchdown run by KRON Lynch Adams Aiden Charles also had that nice touchdown run too but it was an overall struggle I would say I don't think I'm overreacting to that if you think I'm an idiot let me know in the YouTube comments or again locked on spars gmail.com but that was less than inspiring and I kept seeing Nath Nathan Carter's name thrown around being like Oh get him out he stinks get him out I guys what do you want him to do when he's being met with a Defender at the same time he's getting the ball handed to him like I I don't think it's all Nathan Carter and it's also not just all the offensive line too that fourth down call which I do want to try to remember to get to because I'm not overreacting sorry I keep saying that I'm gonna try to get to it but the tight ends got fried like toast left in the toaster for 15 minutes like I not a lot of help was done on the line again lot of season left but I I don't think that was an overreaction there because that kind of well telepaths that well how's it goingon to go against Maryland next week who has a much stronger front than FAU how's it going to go against the rest of the Big 10 teams that you have all right we're gonna keep moving on here with overreactions and I swear I know I know I'm better than this I know I shouldn't overreacted to this but here I am um those penalties okay is this the Mel Tucker era still going on is this the same old undisciplined oh I almost swore um bull baloney that we have been accustomed to the last few years here because my goodness gracious it wasn't just oh your false starts or oh you're off sides like blatant onsports like conduct penalties guys the Malik Spencer targeting I know that that quarterback has some very suspect slides throughout the game this is going to maybe strike a cord in the wrong way with a lot of State fans what Malik Spencer did was wasn't even legal in the 90s and you could have seen that play happening from five yards away like I'm sorry he should have been probably thrown out of that game for targeting again I bleed green and white love all the Spartan players but like what were you thinking or Dylan Tatum who I love I think is a great player unfortunately left the game in a knee brace in crutches which obviously is not a good sign but horse collar tackled five yards out of bounds like just not a great idea or the dquan Dow face mask or I mean this wasn't an unsportsman like conduct penalty but Jordan Hall being damn near in the back field on that third down that kept the chain going I there were some horrific penalties in that game I thought we were done with that again lot of season left I'm sure they'll come into their own but I'm just oh I'm just like the flinchy dog in the shelter I just I just think of the last few years and just how stupid penalties unraveled Michigan State so many times and well they almost unraveled Michigan State today so it has to be tidy up I will say this nothing made me happier after those penalties than the camera going to the sidelines and not seeing the stupid keep chopping thing there is something to be said about that uh but oh my goodness gracious uh that was not good all right we're actually we're we're not done with overreacting to the negative which makes me sad after a win again one and0 a meaningful win for the first time in Lor know's h on here in East lanan but first guys before we get to the play call and stick around for that I need to talk your ears off about ultimate college football head coach this is a fantastic app for you lock on Spartans fans I want to take a moment to give you a heads up on a brand new mobile game that I think you're going to love as much as I do again ultimate college football head coach in this amazing game and simulation you get to step into the shoes of a head coach and lead your college football program to Glory can you imagine being that head coach of Michigan State University well after tonight's game I'm sure some of you actually do want to try to try to be that and here's what I really love about this game you are responsible for calling offensive plays during the games what a great time for this ad re because we're going to get to that in a hot second your strategy will not only determine the success of your football season but will shape the future and Legacy of your program you can also play offline it's ad free just get up and go play whenever you want to there's no hassle with any payments or anything like that to download the game guys just visit ultimate-fx on CFB all caps inside the game again world not on Twitter but earlier this week on Twitter Oregon State fans were getting into it with Michigan State fans about you're gonna hate Brian lingren you're not gonna like what he has to offer and then we're sitting over here like uh brother we just got done with Jay Johnson a slice of grilled cheese would be better than what we just had and then organ State fans are saying oh you're gonna learn Sparty um we even made this a segment with graham couch is does Brian ligren have the best job in America because the only way to go is up with Michigan State fans and I'm not gonna you know put a for sale sign in Brian Ling's house again one season not the greatest offensive line to work with so far hopefully that could change here miraculously but nevertheless if I saw one more inside Zone run if I saw one more 45 yard streak route down the sideline on Third and five which by by the way the pass went 60 yards on the 45 yard Route great arm Talent don't get me wrong those deep shots were not working uh at all tonight um I was going to turn into the Joker because specifically the J Johnson last year what was the gun that kept on shooting himself in the foot it was just the inside run when it was very clear throughout the game not working at all and I get it if you want to work on it you know hey group of five team let's get some live reps in not just against our practice unit during the week but let's let's get some game action going maybe not during a six-point game in the third quarter in the fourth quarter call me crazy let's try some things that work and I know it's just you know so simple for the podcast host to say well try the play action tight end roll out that was automatic seven plus yards in the first half but but do it believe me we talk about scripting plays here and how everything is going to go together that's where thought Michigan state was heading in the second half when they just kept inside run inside run inside run and then okay great the mouse is sniffing the cheese they're gonna pull that ball back and they're gonna find Jack Vin right there on an out route or Michael munis like he did twice in the first half and they never did I mean they tried you know rolling out to his off hand for Aiden childes and then came up short I know that sounds like an excuse for him that should have been a completed pass don't get me wrong but wow that was um that was a that was a game that made me at least look for a white flag on Amazon to wait till the Oregon State fans we were beefing with because that that left a lot to be uh desired again I I know it's not all entirely on him like you try calling plays with an offensive line that you can't trust like I I I know it's hard but there is like a yardage difference between like a a 2 yard run and believe me everyone in the world knew that run was going to go for two yards whenever you called it and a 40 yard streak down the sideline like sometimes when you need seven yards maybe just go for seven yards I call me a call me a little crazy podcast host for that one uh so yeah that was um concerning just the offense as a whole don't get me wrong like I I still believe in the long-term uh career for Aiden child again if we're four games into the season and looks like that every single game going to start to worry a little more but yeah now one thing that we will Circle back on that I'm actually not it's a weird spot here that I'm not concerned about was that fourth and one inside the 20 yard line you take the Chip Shot field goal to make it a two possession game late against FAU I know that a lot of people did not like the call in the moment I know a lot more hated it after the running back got detonated three yards behind the line of scrimmage I actually liked that call I did like going for it and I know of course in hindsight that sounds so stupid but the reasoning is one yard as a power four team against a group of five team you should pick that up every single time and I know I'm just really boiling it down maybe to too simple of a caveman thought right now of oh bigger school should be better than smaller school but really you score the touchdown like you all but put that game away especially if you go for two points after you make that make it a 14-point game and I understand that the field goal makes a two possession game but like don't just Hammer at home like Sledgehammer at home when you should be able to get one yard so unfortunate lesson for the coaching staff that they really don't have an offensive line they can trust and uh yeah but I oddly enough I was not too bent out of shape about that one because I like the aggression I like the thought just didn't really care for the play call of course but even with the play call you should still have your guys be good enough and synced up enough to get one yard I don't think that's really uh an overreaction so be upset about a lot of the play calling believe me I was that one weirdly enough I I I was not too hunt up on that one uh who else did we miss here today just going off the top of the head I gotta say Ryan Eckley superb job yet again far from a question mark going into this season maybe arguably the best punter in the Big 10 I thought he was Sensational um on Tor Foster you know that's one I had slotted in the not overreact category tough game for him uh was the interception right off the bat his fault like no ball a little thrown behind him could he have competed harder for that ball maybe but like that was just okay luck happens sometimes I can't Chu that up to quarterback receiver anyone that fumble of course not ideal but we've seen enough on Tory Foster to believe that hey he is a strong player here that he can be a wide receiver one so I again I know I sound like a broken record if he looks like this three four games into the season still like okay we might have to make some different changes here but no I'm not gonna overreact on them on Tory Foster stuff so guys that's all I had I'm gonna go scroll through the YouTube comments here really quick uh Ray Ray Montoya that's just a bad o line yeah our fears are being realized very early into the season um and you know what so Evan writes in so not looking forward to week and there is a good point about that because for those that aren't like super like you know just involved in college football actually have healthy lives on the outside this is going to sound really strange I think but Maryland has a good defense especially in the front seven sounds strange because you know Maryland is just known for having skill position players and an air eight offense they'll score 50 points a game but they'll also give up 60 like Maryland this day and age they actually really physical on the inside so that's going to be a concern for the Run game but outside of that I oh man I I still have a little bit of Hope for Maryland as sick as that sounds just because our defense did look that good and this is what we're gonna end the show with the same way we started it like I don't want that to get lost here Tom Herman one of the best offensive coaches that you can find like that wasn't just lightning he found in a bottle back in the Ohio State days he had some success at Houston he had moderate success success at Texas I that was a good offensive mind with the quarterback that is experienced in college yes his first start for FAU but he came over from Marshall like that the defense did a really good job they did their job of shutting down a group of five team but I think it's worth tipping your cap to here so I I just got to leave you with that yeah underwhelming from the offense I think it can get better in some ways that offensive line is a concern but let's not just you know watch what the defense did and just not think anything of it I I think that was very impressive by them so um yeah not going to have a parade down Grand River but hey you got to take the positives where you can get them especially after a win so there we have it uh let's just keep scrolling let's just get one more uh comment in here H the playcon took a page from Florida State against Georgia Tech and that's not a compliment well unfortunately the offensive line looked like Florida State's offensive line and that's not really necessarily the good I feel bad about this because obviously the kids work hard you know but we're we're doing a show where we gota just React to what we're seeing with our eyeballs and yeah every year you're taught how important offensive line play is in the game of football if you haven't learned it by now as a Michigan State fan you never will I so yeah that's why I'm uh that's why the hairline that we're showing off right now on YouTube is scaled back as it is it's because um that offensive line I still believe against Maryland that's a good defense we got all right love you all we will be back we will be back you already know enjoy your Labor Day weekend see this is the fun part about Friday night games guys it's over we can move on time to just have a stressfree Saturday Sunday Monday watching other teams throw up on their shoes lock on Spartans your team in green and white every single day love you all I truly mean that i' really do love you all go green
