Maine CDC: First fatal case of tick-borne Powassan reported in York County

The main centers for disease control and prevention reports that a person in New York County has died from a deadly tick borne illness. It's called the possum virus. It's the first time someone in Maine has died from possum since May of last year. The CDC says two other people in the state have been infected with the virus. So far. This year, last year, Maine saw a record high number of seven cases, four people have died from it in the last decade in Maine. Now, the CDC says it's rare for someone to get sick or have symptoms, but those who do can experience serious symptoms. They can include fever, headache, vomiting, weakness, confusion, seizures or memory loss. The virus can also cause serious neurological problems like brain or spinal cord inflammation. The CDC says anyone who experiences these symptoms after a tick bite should see their primary care doctor.
