black tights while Sharon Sports baggy mom jeans and has her long blonde hair and braided pigtails Silverman A Gifted writer who plays are often more experimental essentially has written a romantic comedy in the roommate first seen in 2015 at the sadly now defun human Festival of new American plays this Broadway production directed with d directed with consummate skill by Jack O'Brien validate Silverman's distinct gift in a particular frisky C quirky humor and a sensitive to the emotional mindfields in women's lives lives Robin is initially more wary of the disorienting new world she has dive bomb into and miss lupon an expert in curdled comedy sharp the which this sharp delicate her characters barely hidden contempt for which she perceives as her host staggering innocence when Sharon recalls in shock at the drugs Robin is smoking she points out that the lovely looking plant sh plants Sharon had admired were in fact marijuana the sweet bonding scene when Robin convinces Sharon to try these medicinal herbs marks a turning point in their relationship Miss phell has been seen all too rarely on stage and her last Broadway outing a reef run of another two-hander AR gurn's play Love Letter she gave a performance of breath taking emotional scope here she brings a natural Luminosity to her character who seems who seems to radiate a both both uncertainty about herself and a Natural Curiosity about well anything other than herself specifically Robin and her life to Robin's initial sour chargon but most but miss FOH also leads her character as eth quality that makes Sharon's emotional policy believable as Robin gently tugs her from her shell of complacency Miss lupon is a far better known stage quantity of course a three-time Tony writer winner for her work in musicals who also has appeared more than once in her long career in the work of David Mt as Robin she ex exudes a faintly hostile defense defensiveness at least at first and she brings delicious most musical variety to Robin's often tartly comic responses to Sharon's wide eye innocence about life she can hardly believe Sharon has reached age 65 wath weathered in so much eager ignorance but as the two women spend more time together Robin sheds her armor and Miss lupan affectionally IM imitates sense of renewal that Robin begins to feel as the woman finds some unexpected and unexpectedly fertile Common Ground although Robin at first dodged the question she eventually admits that she has had an adult daughter with whom she has had a cool and getting cooler relationship Sharon has been open from the start about her love for her son a designer who lives in Park Slope Brooklyn everyone thinks he's a homosexual but he's not she adds hardly convincing Robin perhaps and perhaps only have driven him away oh wow both women we come to see through Silverman's fluid peppery comic dialogue are feeling a drift in their lives why else would a woman why else oh wow would a lesbian from Brock here except for the tornadoes Silverman throws a certain curveball Midway through the play when Sharon inly discovers that Robin isn't just a pottery maker and a Slam Poet as she said she was but also a woman with a distinctly shaded past by this by this time however the comfort of company was warmed the corners of Sharon's life to such a degree that shock and dis May flicker only briefly to be followed by Fascination and perhaps some somewhat implausibly a dangerous desire to drop to dip her own clean toes into an exotic elicit world Miss pharoh's Delirious almost childlike experim Rich blue skies and perhaps vulnerability for all this for all this warning comic passages the roommate concludes on a plff note but it suggests that the unusual experience of living in close courts with someone so diametrically different from themselves has enriched both Sharon's and Robin's lives as giving them the courage to approach the future from A New Perspective I don't know where to start Sharon confesses in a monologue address to God but really himself the first then she fir firmly then she firmly if sorrow sorrowfully again except over again the opinion section cess undebatable problem less than 8 weeks from the presidential election there are two widely different narratives of this race the one presented by the press and the one experienced by average voters no points for guessing which is more accurate Tuesday's debate post morem is the best example yet the Press is fist pumping over KLA Harris when how she went about Donald Trump how she turned in no joke one of the more resounding debate performances in recent decades Republicans are still stewing over biased moderators even as they grudgingly ad Mr admit Mr Trump blew it social media is mixed on whether Taylor Swift endorsement seals victory for the vice president back in the real world this is all ridiculous there was no WI in this televised scrum only a nation of hardworking losers millions of Americans came home after a long day of work and tuned in hoping for answers to their daily struggles with inflation migrants crime they instead got moderators obsessed with Beltway bubble issues and candidates who retaliated old disputes surprising though this will be to cheerleading pundits that a problem for their favorite tucked amid the pro Harris headlines were some honest reactions to the debate ruers interviewed 10 swing voters after the event and gave the story an intriguing headline some undecided voters not convinced by Harris after debate with Trump that's one way to put it six said afterward they would now they would now either vote for Trump or were leaning toward backing him the piece explains one remain undecided three backed Miss Harris a New York Times interview of eight undecided voters after the after the debate found two leading leaning toward Mr Trump one toward Miss Harris the rest extremely confused CNN BBC and Wall Street Journal interviews with uncommitted voters produce similar mixed results these voters responded responses highlight Miss Harris problems she has succeeded in dodging questions about her past and her agenda and she did so again Tuesday night the Press raved over her deafness but whoops but whoops five of the rers interviews faulted her for failing to explain how she'd help improve the economy their top issue there was no real meat and bones for her plan said a 61-year-old entrepreneur from Florida who is now leaning toward Mr Trump a Nevada resident said he also moved toward Mr Trump after hearing Miss Harris tell him not to vote for Don Donald Trump instead of why she's the right candidate at least Mr Biden in his basement at least Mr Biden in his basement spoke to the issue that in 2020 was voters top concern Co Miss Harris is a w on the economy awalk Mr Trump was equally short on agenda details but unlike Miss Harris he doesn't necessarily have to provide a plan people lived life under his leadership and can compare it with the Biden Harris economy a 34 year- old black woman in Milwaukee explained to the times why the debate nudged her toward the Republican when Trump was in office not going to lie I was living way better I've never been so down as in the past four years Miss Harris spent the debate casting Mr Trump as a truly unpleasant dude and we are voting for the leader of our country not who we want in our wedding party said a Pennsylvania woman and the CNN group she now plans to vote Trump of the six Trump converts in the ruds article all said they did not like him as a person they said their personal financial situation had been better when he was president these an antidotes responses are born out and POS Miss Harris standing with working class voters is the worst of any Democrat in modern history Barack Obama lost the white working class by 20 points in 2012 Joe Biden by 26 in 20120 the most recent times poll has Miss Harris behind by 36 that number has barely budged since July despite five weeks of Joy also unchanged Miss Harris is winning among nonwhite voters without college degrees by 30 points Mr Obama's margin was 67 she's losing voters 45 and older she's behind among male voters by a notably wider margin than she ahead among women and 41% of Hispanics say they back Mr Trump Donald Trump may not win he's unlikely and undisciplined and has proved his ability to lose but the last time the press and Democrats were this giddy about their candidate this resolutely blind to the disconnect with with average folders was in 2016 remember how that turned out for Hillary Clinton sure we sure we remember perhaps these interviewees out outliers and the debate was a Harris Game Changer but wouldn't it be wiser to assume that Americans aren't stupid that they are unhappy with inflation crime and Chaos at the border and that they do not and they do care about an agenda until or unless Miss Harris campaigns in a way that acknowledges as much she'll struggle against a beatable opponent the Press won't help her by spiking the football you've been listening to a reading of Articles and features from the Friday September 13 2024 issue on the Wall Street Journal we
