Now at six, a major hotel strike continues how it's impacting guests. Plus businesses on Third Avenue in Chula Vista, begin taking down their outdoor dining parks and the local city discussing an encampment ban today. You're watching CBS eight mornings and sex. Thank you for joining us on this Tuesday. It is 6 a.m. I'm Eric Connor and I'm not at Iranpour and we do want to start with your forecast. It's a very important one for this week because you thought it was cooling down. Oh, no, no, no, no, we fall already that little glimpse we had. Yes. And some people thought with of course Labor Day being behind us that this was the unofficial of. No, not so much. We are feeling quite like summer for the next several days, at least the next week or so live. Look outside shows that the marine layer is starting to make its way back on shore, just some passing clouds as we speak. But other parts of the county are actually dealing with quite clear conditions to kick off. The day. Sunrise is at 625. So another 25 minutes on that and then sunset will be coming at 710 tonight. Uh Today's forecast shows low eighties along our coastline. We're warming up 90 three on average for our valleys and 96 for the mountains. This is the cooler end of the spectrum. We are just going to keep warming up from here, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The inland valley locations, mountains and deserts will all be under an excessive heat warning. So we're expecting those temperatures to be very, very hot for that stretch coming up in just a bit. We'll talk about that and about this less active marine layer that will likely be seen for mornings to come. That and Eric and that's the cooler day. Ok, Evan, thank you very much for that. Well, thousands of hotel workers across the country including here in San Diego are expected to hit the picket line. Now for a third day, the strike is impacting major hotel chains like Marriott, Hyatt, Hilton and Omni CBS eight Regina Jitta live outside the Hilton Bayfront downtown with more on what these workers are demanding here, Regina, good morning guys. And since we got here around four this morning, we still are seeing more workers heading towards this direction. We outside of the Hilton Bay front to the tent that they have set up, they actually come to this area first and get some of their signs and then head to the picket line, which is usually on the left side of the Hilton Bay front but they've been here since Sunday. This is now the third day and we are actually going to bring in Paul in here, who is a worker. You work in the banquet department, right. You've been working there for several years now since the Hilton Bayfront opened. Walk me through what the experience has been like and why you're here striking today. Well, we're here striking today because the Hilton has not proposed any new economic uh gains um that we propose uh for our new contract. So what's been happening since the pandemic since we've been back to the Pande from the pandemic is that the the Hilton has been charging a lot more for services and have decreased the amount of work load, uh increase the amount of workload for all the employees here. So they're gaining record profit while all pay has not move a needle. So that's a big challenge for us. And everybody knows that living cost has double or triple in San Diego. Everybody knows that. So all we're asking is for the company to meet with some realistic econo economical pur uh proposals right now, which they haven't met yet. So that's why we're here striking because we need um some realistic economical purpose on the table for us to go back to work. Well, thank you so much for talking to us this morning. Of course, he is just one of many workers out here hitting the picket lines. I should mention that the Hilton representatives reached out to us saying that they are looking forward to continuing negotiations with workers. We'll bring you guys the latest, but for now, I'll send it back to you guys. Regina. Thank you. Temporary permits for curbside dining in Chula Vista are expected to expire this week. We've already seen some businesses right along Third Avenue start to take down those outdoor park lights. The ones you sit on right there by the sidewalks. CBS Eight's Chris Row joining us live outside. One business that complied with this major change. Chris, yeah. Where are you now? Yes. So we're right here at three punk ales still. And I want to point out this is something that we found here where the park letts used to be. And this is the sign that many of these businesses that had these parks set up had put here on display and what it tells them is that they need to remove those parks by today 5 p.m. or tomorrow, the city will come through and remove the parks and as I can step away and show you, this is where the park letts used to be for three punk ales right here. In fact, you can see the difference in the asphalt from where that structure, that temporary structure used to be. Now, there are still several businesses here on Third Avenue that still have those park letts out. It's not clear if they're going to keep them up and the city will come through and take them down or if they're going to get them down sometime today. Either way, what we know so far is that the reason why that this is all happening is because those temporary permits that were issued as a result of COVID restrictions and businesses trying to get customers to still dine or drink at their restaurants, their businesses, their breweries that those were instituted and then they became very popular, especially up here, up and down Third Avenue. They were kept in place until recently, they were allowed to expire. Now, the city council heard including the mayor that this was a popular thing and that there obviously was a lot of outrage about these potentially going away. So what they decided to do and this was the last movement on this is that they went ahead and voted to start a subcomittee that will study this about potentially putting this in long term. Now, as for that public outrage, we did hear from two residents, a mother and a daughter who are walking on their morning walk who say it's jarring to see some of these parks gone like here at three point gales and they're going to miss them. It, it brought uh available seating for people to sit out here and enjoy the different uh establishments. It made it that uh you could have a group of people that normally you wouldn't be able to because there's not enough room inside. I think it just brought camaraderie to downtown Chula Vista. Now, some that have pointed out that these park, let's take up those parking spaces. There is the parking garage that's down the street, but this did open up about 3 to 4 parking spaces right here in front of three punk ales. So that's sort of the balance right now that the city is trying to strike and something that, that subcomittee will likely be studying at the same time. All right, Chris, thank you today. The National City Council is discussing an ordinance that would ban homeless encampments on all public property unless approved by the city manager. The ban would be in effect at all times near schools, waterways and transit stations. This comes after Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order, directing state agencies to clear out all encampments. National City previously failed to pass an encampment ban due to a lack of shelter availability. The vote on the proposed ban is expected to be on September 17th and now this morning, we now know the name of a navy sailor shot and killed in the East Village. Navy officials have now identified him as 18 year old Albert Lee SOTO. Police say SOTO have got into a fight with a group of men inside a nightclub near ninth and F street early Saturday morning. He was shot and killed just a few blocks away from that club. Police are still looking for the suspects. Soda was an operations specialist seaman apprentice assigned to us S Pyy. He was from New York and enlisted just last October. And now this morning people continue heading home after traveling for Labor Day, San Diego International Airport anticipated large crowds. But luckily people we talked to say they didn't have many problems. In fact, one kid visiting from San Francisco says it was the ice cream. That was the highlight of his trip. We swam in a pool at the hotel. We stayed out actually a lot and also eat a ton of ice cream. Hey, assuming an ice cream, he had a good time. That's a good memory for him. If you're heading home today, experts say the best time to hit the road is after 1 p.m. I don't want to tell him but you can do that anywhere you can, but it's just that much better in here in San Diego to cool off today's average gas price. By the way, if you're gonna be filling up hitting the road 469 for a gallon of regular here, it was 472 1 month ago. And while it may seem far away now is the time to start planning a trip over Thanksgiving and Christmas in our next half hour here, we're gonna hear from travel experts. They're gonna help you score the best deal. So uh one vacation, one trip down, start thinking about the next one, next time off that you might have or something fun coming up. It's kind of nice though to have something on the calendar to look forward to and get excited about. Which reminds me I need to find something to put on the calendar. I was just gonna say that it also does same for me. I need to start pondering what to do but not to do next. I love being in San Diego for this period. So I wanna start time of year, next year, maybe this week, next week. Yeah, it is a hot uh rest of our work week here. A lot of people assume that now that we made it to Labor Day, that we had a run in the start of the fall season. I never said that. And uh there's a good reason why it's because we've got some very hot temperatures across San Diego County in the coming days, Wednesday through Friday, in particular marine layer is coming back on shore. This is a live look outside from Mount Soledad, making out the fog. That's about all you can see in this view. But a few minutes ago, you were able to see that sunrise. So this is a good indication that those clouds have started to surge back on shore. Sunrise technically is still not until 625. So another 15 minutes or so and then that sunset at 710 walking out the door right now, Ramona has made it to the upper fifties a little bit cooler in the overnight stretch. 59 degrees four for El Cajon and 63 for Lamesa. We've talked about how these temperatures have allowed for a little cooling in the overnight stretch. You can open up the windows and get some of the cooler air coming in the window. Uh, but by the afternoon hours, one thing we're going to watch for is not only these warm afternoon highs but warm overnight lows as well. Overnight lows for Thursday, Friday and a Saturday seventies, mid seventies at that. And that means that our afternoon highs are going to be much, much warmer than that. We're talking 100 degrees inland on Thursday and 100 and three on Friday. Our two days of peak heat before temperatures start to slide into the weekend, but really not by much an excessive heat watch that we had yesterday has now been upgraded to a warning. We've got it in effect for the same time frame. Wednesday through Friday. Afternoon hours are the times you want to avoid spending too much time outside. A wider picture here shows you it's the Southwester us and really goes all the way up the state of California as far as these heat related alerts go. So there are millions of people experiencing this very dramatic across our county. Let's talk about what's going on as far as traffic goes. I want to take you to just one crash that popped up recently and is already causing some delays in the Escondido area. We got two lanes blocked with a crash on the 15 northbound before the via Rancho Parkway exit. You can see how there is some stop and go traffic highlighting the lanes headed northbound there. So I expect some delays in that area but it does look like CHP is on scene working to clear that and get those two lanes reopened. Want to also check in on your border wait times right now where it is going to be a long one out there. The same E cio port of entry, 210 minutes to get across the port of entry. Remember yesterday was about 25 minutes or so o time, a supportive entry and take you about 100 minutes. So still it's better at the o time, a supportive entry but still gonna take about an hour and 40 minutes in total. Uh, this is one of the mornings where I'd say that's, that is one of the highest we've seen it at. Yeah, exactly. It could be taking it quite a while. So just keep that in mind moving forward.
