sloth fever just how risky is it and we also have some good news about the planet new power plants are popping up here in the us and our climate team is going to plug us into the renewable energy that's keeping the lights on but first we are following another travel Rush due to the Labor Day weekend the Transportation Security Administration is expecting to screen more than 17 million people in the period from Thursday to Wednesday about 2.5 million of those passengers will travel through New York area airports and CBS News correspondent roxan Saar is at one of those New York Liberty International Airport just a bit south of us in New Jersey so roxan tell us what it's looking like over there well Lana you and I spoke a little bit ago earlier today it was quiet but now people are definitely streaming in as they get out of work and try to get to their destinations for this long holiday weekend they're among millions of people who are planning to squeeze out the last WIS of summer for taking to the by taking to the skies the TSA is preparing to screen about 2.86 million people just today it is the Peak Travel day for TSA during this holiday weekend the major US carriers also expect to fly a record number of passengers for United Airlines that's nearly 500,000 passengers a day this weekend a spokesperson told me they are prepared and that they're adding around 1,500 flights a day to accommodate the high demand good that there's more flights and good that things seem to be going well the other thing that seems to be going well for travelers is the lack of actually like bad storms because we know that that can always throw a wrench into things should should Travelers expect smooth sailing or is there anything that you're watching that they should keep in mind before heading to the airport you know we're not expecting too many weather related travel today delays today with the possible exception of Detroit this evening our meteorologist David Parkinson told us he's expecting strong to severe storms that could roll through there until 10:00 Chicago and Charlotte could also see some thunderstorms today New Orleans is under a flood watch tonight tomorrow a line of storms could Target parts of the Northeast including Pittsburgh DC Philly new New York where you are New Jersey area where we are an all right roxan thank you and once you get to your location this weekend I'm sure a lot of you or at least your friends and family will be sparking up the grill but you better prepare because you might face some sticker shock despite inflation falling below 3% for the first time since 2021 food inflation remains High Hot Dogs cost almost 10% more ground beef for burgers 8% more and ribs will cost you 4% more than just last summer and earlier this week a Kroger's executive admitted to raising prices above inflation levels on some items like eggs and milk all this comes as the Federal Trade Commission fights the grocery chains planned merger with Albertson's and CBS News correspondent Janet Shaman joins us now from Houston Janet we're already struggling with the price of things so how are people coping are they having to make changes to their barbecue plans people are making changes L I want to give you a scene Setter here we're in buds House of meat in Houston this is a massive Butcher Shop people come in here for just about everything and uh one of the biggest sellers right now for Labor Day weekends is the ground bees here you can see that they're I'm sure they have more in the back but I talk to Shoppers all day here some are making changes they're not buying certain items one woman told me the chicken wings are through the roof and the owner of this place who also stocks Staples like milk and eggs told me that the biggest increase that he has seen here is eggs there'll be thousands of people here throughout the weekend they're expecting to serve something like 2500 people and and we do talk to we are seeing that people are changing their buying habits for the for the reasons that you mentioned you forgot to mention though that that beer that you're going to wash all that food down with is up three% Lana from last year another important uh important note Janet U and remind all of our viewers because the rate of inflation is going down overall but what's the outlook on food prices specifically thank you so you're right inflation is cooling but these costs are still going up and here's what we're hearing from experts that I talked to today it's a number of factors play it's not just one thing labor costs have gone up Transportation costs have gone up um they are putting a lot of products in more ecologically friendly packaging which cost more and there is a shortage in the area specifically of um of of cattle and of birds and part of that is due on the on the poultry to bird flu but uh the cattle crop is smaller this year and as a result you know we're all paying more for everything and that includes the soda that that man was was just uh loading up here um but people are still going to celebrate 70% of Americans say they are planning something for Labor Day weekend Lana all right and we hope it's a good one for you as well J chaman thank you well the Israeli military says it killed a senior Hamas commander in the occupied West Bank on Friday the IDF has been conducting scaled up operations in the Palestinian territory over the past 3 days our MTS tab is in East Jerusalem with more details MTS well L the situation in the Israeli occupied West Bank is really going from bad to worst as the violence there only intensifies now Israel has said that it has killed what they described as a senior Hamas leader in the West Bank uh bringing the death toll there in just the last three days to 16 uh but it really just underscores how tense the occupied West Bank has been since October 7th in fact according to the UN over 600 20 Palestinians have been killed in confrontations with Israeli forces and what's being described as extremist Jewish settler groups now Israel has indicated that this operation in the West Bank is uh likely going to continue for many days an operation which is being described as one of the largest in nearly two decades still in the background of all this there may be some hopeful news in Gaza where Israel says that it has agreed to three 3-day pauses in the fighting in Gaza in order for health workers to vaccinate around 640,000 Palestinian children in Gaza against polio this follows the uh fact that a 10-month-old boy uh was diagnosed with polio something that left him paralyzed in one leg health workers saying that they feared a major outbreak of that disease uh and that is why Israel is saying that it has agreed to this pause but has made it clear that in areas where where the vaccination is not being administered they will still Target and it was made very clear by the Israelis that uh this pause is not the beginning of any kind of ceasefire that has been uh really in these very stuck negotiations with Hamas for many months now still for the children of Gaza this is incredibly good news if those vaccinations do make it to them Lana all right MTS TI up thank you meanwhile in Japan Ty sha Shan has weakened to a tropical storm despite this authorities have issued wind flood and Landslide warnings as massive amounts of rain continued to drench Tokyo millions of people have been ordered to evacuate several people have died and dozens more are hurt joining us now from Tokyo is Hoshi sukagawa he is a reporter with our partners at tbst TV Hoshi thanks for joining us tell us what's the latest on the Storm what are you expecting over the weekend well thank you um it's just past 6 a.m. in Tokyo and this past week has been dominated by slow-moving typhoon completely disrupting the PLS of not only the locals but a lot of the tourists also the typhoons moving Northeast across Japan was once into the Pacific Ocean but it has made landfall back in Japan and in term of its strength the storm's core has deipa and it's definitely weakening but heavy rain cloud is still overwhelming the entire country bringing disaster level rain to Tokyo and Southern regions in parts of kushu 24-hour rainfall total reached nearly 500 mm making it a new record and in prefixes near Tokyo highest level emergency safety alerts were issued urging thousands of residents to evacuate and in Tokyo suburbs also drainage system were completely overwhelmed leaving roads and parking lots completely submerged and on the mountain side record-breaking downpour has destabilize the soil and many landsides are still being triggered and the highest concern we have here in Japan now is a thick layer of rain clouds that developed an extremely rapid Pace we call this a linear rain band and with tyoon and Autumn rain fronts merging this particular atmospheric pattern can potentially cause sudden river floods and further landslides also despite the damage across the country the death still range at six but the meteorological agency is still in higher alert urging Extreme Caution for local tourists the typhoon's maximum wind speed is currently around 60 mph not to not too much and it continues its slow approach towards turker at about 1 mph that's about the latest back to you Lena all right that Devastation though that we're witnessing there really tremendous uh Hoshi sukagawa thank you well there's a growing focus on Reproductive Rights on the campaign Trail after Donald Trump floated the idea of having the government pay for IVF treatments it's a direct counter to democrat's attack that Trump and the Republican Party are trying to strip away Reproductive Rights Trump often brags about appointing the Supreme Court Justices that helped overturn R versus Wade that sent laws about abortion to the States but it also called into question other aspects of reproductive health care including birth control and fertility treatments like IVF Trump is continuing his campaign through the Battleground state of Pennsylvania and in Washington DC the former president is participating in an interview with the founder of the pro-life group moms for Liberty meanwhile Senator Elizabeth Warren stumped for the Harris campaign on Friday she called out Trump saying his quote flailing about insurance coverage doesn't change the fact that his extremist judges can now ban IVF anytime anywhere CBS News political reporter Zack Hudak joins us now to talk about this and more so Zach do we have any details on this idea that Trump was floating that the government would pay for IVF treatment his plan is as you said that either the government or insurance companies themselves would pay for these kinds of treat ments I think what has been missed in the coverage of that somewhat is just how difficult that would be to do legislatively because what they would be up against is forcing Congress to increase taxes if the government were to pay for it or to actually go against the pharmaceutical Lobby if it were to have uh pharmaceutical companies excuse me not pharmaceutical companies insurance companies pay for it both very difficult things for Congress to do so while this does sort of send a virtue signal that Trump is acknowledging that this is a difficult thing for people Elizabeth Warren has a point that even if this were to happen which that would be unrealistic uh it wouldn't matter if it's in a state where judges have made IVF illegal and beyond that it just is something that politically would be incredibly difficult to do we see politicians make promises like this as the campaign season goes on but it really is more of a virtue signal than something concrete that could reasonably happen all right uh let me ask you about another um tacking by the Trump campaign uh because the former president also said that he thinks that Florida's six- we abortion ban is quote Too Short most Democrats would agree with that but how are conservatives reacting to those comments we are seeing some of the farther right groups and even some uh local polititions in States like Florida Florida come out and say what's going on here our leader is going against what we've been working for that being said I think what this is is Donald Trump acknowledging something that he has long acknowledged uh sometimes publicly but long acknowledged privately which is that he thinks that abortion is somewhat of a losing issue for Republicans to be talking about he understands that getting things done on it can buy him good will with the far right and with the religious right but he acknowledges that when he gets stuck talking about this mostly only damage can be done not that much can be done when he's talking about abortion that will actually help him in his campaign interesting so does Trump's new messaging on Reproductive Rights undercut a major rallying cry for Democrats are they concerned about this you know I think it defends against their rally and cry a little bit Democrats have realized in recent weeks that this is an issue that the more they talk about the more it hurts Donald Trump that being said I think they can still point to his record on abortion which is appointing Supreme Court Justices who helped overt overturn row so Democrats still have the option to say Donald Trump might be softening his tone on abortion but this is still a man who has had arguably the most impact on rolling back abortion rights in recent history so they still do have a pretty strong attack to make on the issue all right and Zach we've talked a lot about Trump what is the Harris campaign up to this weekend they will be uh headed on Sunday uh Governor Tim Walls is going to go to the Minnesota State Fair which uh we have seen a few uh Minnesota politicians recently posing with the firefighters at those recent things it's become somewhat of a viral photo then Monday we will have uh VP Harris and President Biden headed to Pittsburgh for a campaign event and I would note that that is a place where President Biden has had several notable uh rallies throughout his time including uh when he announced he'll be running in 2020 all right Zack Hudak thank you thank you Donald Trump is once again trying to move his New York City criminal case from state to federal court in an effort to get his conviction overturned lawyers for the Republican Presidential nominee argue that Trump's prosecution V violated his constitutional rights and went against the Supreme Court's recent presidential immunity ruling though the acts in question took place before Mr Trump was President you'll recall Trump was found guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records that was related to hush money payments made to an adult film actress ahead of the 2016 election Trump sentencing is currently scheduled for September 18th coming up after the break West Nile Triple E and now sloth fever as if we didn't have enough reasons to dislike mosquitoes well we are going to get some clarity from an infectious disease specialist ahead and it was a case that captivated the nation two years after the subject of the popular serial podcast was cleared of murder charges his case is headed back to court you're streaming CBS News 247 Marilyn Supreme Court has reinstated the murder conviction of ananad after he was cleared of all charges 2 years years ago the court said the earlier proceedings violated the legal rights of the victim's family Heyman Lee because they weren't given enough notice the justices say Sayad will remain free as the case now goes to a lower court to determine whether his conviction should still be overturned you recall the case gained national attention in 2014 when it was featured on the first season of the serial podcast s had served more than 20 years for the 1999 murder of his ex- high school girlfriend he has always maintained his innocence a doctor charged in the overdo overdose death of actor Matthew Perry is expected to plead guilty in the case Dr Mark Chavez is facing a federal charge of conspiracy to distribute ketamine to other people have also pleaded guilty and have agreed to work with prosecutors five people in total were charged in Perry's death earlier this month an autopsy report found he had an amount of ketamine in his system that was in the range of general anesthesia that's the amount used for surgery professional hockey player Johnny gdo and his brother were killed in a car crash in New Jersey Thursday night police say the driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee struck the two while attempting to pass an SUV the Columbus Blue Jacket player and his brother Matthew were pronounced dead on the scene that driver is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and is facing multiple charges including death by Auto and reckless driving [Music] well this week A New Hampshire man died of Eastern equine and sephtis or Triple E after being bit by a mosquito US Health officials are warning that cases of mosquito born diseases like Triple E and West Nile are on the rise this year especially in the Northeast hotter temperatures more severe weather events and piles of plastic trash have created environments where mosquitoes Thrive allowing insects to reach areas formally inhospitable to them for example Denay cases are rising in Europe where the disease used to actually be quite rare the number of European countries with a self-sustaining population of a mosquito breed known to carry Deni fever has grown from 8 to 13 in the last decade and that's why the number of locally acquired European cases in 2023 almost doubled compared to the year before and Europe Center for disease prevention and control is warning that this year could be on track even to surpass that it's a similar story for Puerto Rico which has dealt with Deni outbreaks in the past but never really to this extent look at this cases on the island are up 48% compared to a decade ago earlier this year the government declared the situation a public health emergency and it's not just that diseases are spreading to new areas mosquito season is also getting longer because of climate change a 2023 study by the nonprofit climate Central found that 170 three locations across the US have seen an increase in the number of mosquito days the average increase for those locations is 16 days but some areas in the country have had their mosquito days actually extended by much longer these 10 cities have seen at least an extra month of days that are favorable to mosquitoes well the Oro pushe virus referred to as sloth fever has also made its way to the US Florida's health department has reported 30 cases all linked to travel from Cuba one case was reported in New York also following travel and Dr William shaftner joins me for more he's a professor of preventative medicine Health policy and infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University Dr shaffner always great to talk to you first of all what exactly is sloth fever how do you get it how did it get that name talk to us about what this crazy new illness is that's suddenly popping up on our radar bana Oro virus is a rather obscure virus it's native to South America and now Cuba it occasionally occurs in large outbreaks it is spread from person to person by mosquitoes but also by tiny flies called binges and after three to 10 days you can develop fever aches and pains nausea vomiting feeling poorly joint pains this is not a fun Illness but it lasts for about week and then will usually go away some people however feel very puny for a longer period of time and have some aches and pains in their joints and after a week it can come back you have another few days of illness and it'll go away so it's an odd virus but fortunately except for travelers to and from the affected countries we don't have this virus in the United States yet yet and as you probably heard I was talking about how many of these insect born mosquito born or uh in this case mid midies uh born illnesses um are spreading to other parts of the globe as a response to all this what can be done to prevent this threat in this case well I think what we can do is individual protective measures you see there no vaccines against these diseases so uh particularly here in the United States if you go out now please use insect repellent uh try to avoid going out early in the morning and in the evening that's where many mosquitoes tend to bite more frequently and go around your neighborhood and check out standing water uh even in small amounts because that's where mosquitoes can breed uh and Dr shner we were talking also about Triple E which is um a disease that um most people don't think of um when when we're thinking about getting mosquito bites but we know that there are several places particularly in New England that have been so affected or so worried about uh Triple E that they've even shut down some of their Parks uh From Dusk to Dawn How concerned should we be about um about Triple E well there's no doubt that people in those locations in New England and down into the Middle Atlantic states need to be very very careful again get that insect propellant out anytime you go out wear long sleeves wear trousers be careful of where mosquitoes can breed around your house get rid of that standing water and that's the best you can do and of course uh particularly for older people who if they get these illnesses tend to get much more severe disease you you might want to stay indoors more enjoy the air conditioning in this hot weather all right Dr William shner have a top stories Virginia officials say that routine sample testing did not find leria at a B's head facility leading up to last month's recall the samples were collected dozens of times over the past year but documents released from the USDA this week detailed multiple Health violations at that plant some involved bugs mold and mildew Venezuela's President says electrical sabotage caused a power outage in the country the outage began early early Friday morning affecting all of Venezuela states there have been many areas of unrest in the country recently over a contested presidential election and Friday marks 3 years since the last American troops boarded a plane out of Afghanistan ending 20 years of US military involvement there the pullout which began 3 weeks prior was chaotic and violent 13 Americans died in a bombing at the Cabell airport the Taliban has since returned to power in Afghanistan rolling back many rights women and girls one of President Biden's top advisers just wrapped up a three-day trip to China Jake Sullivan meant with Chinese president xiin ping this week with the goal of easing tensions and keeping lines of communication open between the two countries increasing competition with China in recent years has led to concerns of it boiling over into conflict Sullivan said Thursday as he ended his trip that the key to avoiding that is quote responsible management through diplomacy CBS News National Security contributor Sam vinegrad joins us now for our weekly National Security wrapup so Sam what more can you tell us about sven's trip to China well Lana the Biden administration's whole approach to managing competition and conflict with China has been enhancing dialogue not to gloss over differences but to avoid miscalculation that's why Biden has spoken several times with President xan ping and we've seen officials like secretary Rondo Yellen and blinkin traveled to China now Jake Sullivan went for the first first time as National Security adviser and met with officials including president xiin ping and the foreign minister president XI took a more conciliatory tone during his meeting with Jake Sullivan speaking about the traditional friendship between the two countries while the foreign minister took another approach and indicated that the United States is trying to damage China's legitimate interest now Sullivan spoke about areas of cooperation on law enforcement on counternarcotics and more while not shying away from contentious issues like TR China's unfair trade and economic practices their aggressive behavior in the South China Sea and other matters The Next Step here is that Biden and president G will speak in the coming weeks and White House adviser John podesta is expected to travel to China shortly as well Lana all right well back in the US defense secretary Lloyd Austin welcomed Ukraine's defense minister to the Pentagon what's the latest on us involvement in the war between Russia and Ukraine well several days before secretary Austin welcomed Ukrainian counterpart the Pentagon announced its largest ever security assistance package for Ukraine up to $125 million worth of ammunition missiles counter drone equipment and other items the meeting between Austin and his Ukrainian counterpart comes after Ukraine suffered one of the largest strikes by Russia in this 30-month war over 200 missiles and drones uh struck Ukraine including civilian infrastructure this led to blackouts across the country and a lot of damage on the uh on in the aftermath of the strike UK Ukrainian officials renewed their calls for for the United States and other partners to allow Ukraine to use their weapons inside of Russia well Iran also signaled it would be open to restarting negotiations with the us over its nuclear program this past week what exactly does that mean well Lana it's someone who worked on Iran policy and on the early stage of negotiations that led to the 2015 nuclear deal I take statement by the Supreme Leader with a heavy dose of skepticism Iran has aggressively marched closer to a nuclear weapon not further away ever since president Trump unilaterally backed out of the 2015 nuclear deal Iran has increased its stockpile of Highly enriched uranium which uh lessens its breakout time to an actual nuclear weapon it's increased the number of centrifuges machines that enrich uranium as well and it's really basically cut off access for the UN nuclear Watchdog known as the Ia iaea so the supreme leader actions speak louder than his words so we have to take his statement with a heavy dose of skepticism Lana all right Sam vinegrad thank you [Music] thanks the US is looking to produce a record amount of clean clean energy in 2024 and right now it is actually on track to do so almost all of the new electricity generation capacity in the US added in the first half of the Year came from carbon free sources according to the US Energy Information agency this includes wind solar battery storage and nuclear power for more let's bring in CBS News National Environmental correspondent David Sher from Dallas so David the nation added 20 gaw of new capacity in the first half of 2024 for context enough to power 15 million homes what are the biggest sources of new power well natural gas used to be king but now it makes up just a fraction of the new generation that we've been talking about here instead solar leads the way accounting for almost 60% of new power and a lot of it's coming from some Mega solar projects that have been built in Texas and Florida after that you might think the next category would be wind which would be logical but it's actually battery storage at about 20% New Generation let's talk a little bit more about batteries and their importance in being able to achieve the clean energy goals that the US is setting out to actually uh to on track it sounds like to achieve and and hoping to achieve yeah right well battery storage has become real popular because you can store energy when it's not needed and then release it when it is so imagine like a big wind blowing in West Texas overnight and the wind turbines are spinning hting really hard but people are sleeping and they don't need the energy in that case that Excess power would just go to waste but with batteries you can store that power until the morning when people wake up they got stuff to do they need energy and that power is now available but it's coming from a battery and David I have to say I was so excited when we were discussing this story because so often it seems like we are reporting all the ways in which we have failed to meet our energy goals our clean our clean power goals any of our climate goals and in this case I understand that the country is actually on Pace to double the amount of new solar this year compared to last year and a record amount of battery storage talk to us about the impact here on climate change recognizing that there's still a lot of work to do sure yeah well the transition is obviously critical for the country to hit its Targets this energy transition for reducing carbon emissions which are the primary cause of climate change at the moment the emissions from the power sector are not falling fast enough to St On Target even you know all this new uh generation is being built the solution is essentially to only build green energy projects going forward which is basically what this report is telling us right now that anything that's coming online is going to be renewable energy which it has long-term great implications and David does it actually look like that's likely to happen that all of the new energy that's that's coming online will be clean sources it sure looks like that because obviously no one's building any coal plants coal plants are being sunsetted right now as we see now they very few uh gas plants being built and a lot of those are now being sunsetted so what's in the pipeline like for the rest of the year for example are all renewable energy projects and how does nuclear play into this there is nuclear in uh in in the in the mix uh there's a nuclear plant they just open a fourth generating facility at this one location in Atlanta uh nuclear is challenging because right now these plants are so big and expensive there's so much permitting there's so many laws that have to be dealt with to open them up so you don't see them uh being built as frequently but what we have seen and what people are talking more about now are small nuclear plants that aren't these massive loads that are carried all the time but smaller plants that F fit into the overall uh uh you know complement of all the energy that's being created in the country so I think nuclear energy is definitely still on the the most popular pastimes during the NFL season an estimated 62.5 million people played during the 2022 season across the US and Canada according to the fantasy sports and gaming Association but if you're like me and have never played fantasy football before we have you covered Dave Richard joins us now from Fort Lauderdale Florida he's a co-host of CBS Sports award-winning show fantasy football today so Dave help me out and anybody else out there who needs you to break down the basics of fantasy football what's a typical draft look like hey Lana you know a typical Fantasy Football Draft is building a team you're going to pick players that you like that you think are going to do well over the course of the football season you're basically going to be your own version of Bill bellich and you go round by round there's usually 8 to 12 people people in a fantasy league and you just take turns picking players and the players that you like are the players that go on your team and then you build a lineup that just works for you and you start them each week they're your football players for the season okay so that seems pretty easy you draft your team how do you score points and win your weekly matchups so that that's an important detail to remember when you go back to your draft it's knowing what the scoring system is you know in the NFL a touchdown is worth six points in fantasy football leagues that's usually what they're worth as well but you also get points for yardage it's usually a point for every 10 yards rushing or receiving a point for every 25 yards passing two-point conversion that's worth two points you turn the ball over or if one of your players turns the ball over that's worth negative two points you don't want that on your fantasy team but each week you'll play somebody else in your league and whoever scores the most points wins it's pretty simple but you got to know your league rules before you go into your draft in some leagues catches are worth a quarter of a point a half of a point a full point there are many many mutations of fantasy football it's changed a lot in the 20 years that we've been doing this here at CBS I have to say the people I know that play Fantasy Football are all in I do you have to be fully read in on the NFL on every game to play Fantasy Football so it's it's just like anything else Lana if the more you put into it the more effort you put in the better you're going to do and we've got an audience that sticks with us year round it could be baseball season and people don't care they want to work on their fantasy football teams it's really become a national Obsession because people love the NFL and it's a way for them to be closer to the NFL now I've seen people win fantasy leagues they barely set their own lineup and they still find a way to win because they just get lucky and that certainly a part of the game but the bottom line is that the more you know about the players and not just ing players that you've that you've heard of but also players that maybe are recommended to you the better that you'll do okay Dave let's let's go to that I want the cheat codes if you're picking first who are your top five players to draft who are some sleepers maybe to look out for what can you tell me yeah sure so the top five players in my rankings are Christian mcaffrey running back of the San Francisco 49ers CD lamb wide receiver of the Dallas Cowboys Tyreek Hill a wide receiver of the Miami dolphins and then two more running backs Bree Hall with the New York Jets and bejan Robinson a second-year running back with the Atlanta Falcons and these are all players that I expect to get huge numbers this year double digits and touchdowns lots of catches lots of yards the kind of thing that gives you fantasy points but you ask for sleepers and that's what everybody looks for I like Josh Palmer a wide receiver with the LA Chargers I like khil Shakir who's a wide receiver with the Buffalo Bills a running back that I think can get you off to a good start is chuba hubard with the Carolina Panthers and then one other running back this is this is the backup to Christian mcaffrey in San Francisco his name is Jordan Mason he's the one that would play if Christian mcaffrey were to miss time that's somebody that I would like to have on my bench yeah that's right you've got a bench in fantasy paramounts Transformers one and smile too for more on all of this it's my pleasure to bring in Eric Davis he is the managing editor of Fandango always a treat to talk with you Eric uh several summer movies like Deadpool Wolverine inside out too broke box office records are you expecting the same this fall I'm wondering which films you're expecting to really draw in the biggest audiences well lot of I think it starts next week with Beetle Juice Beetle juu a lot of people looking forward to that film and I just saw it and it's a lot of fun uh really good time I mean it's a sequel 30 plus years in the making of course a followup to the 1988 classic starring Michael Keaton who of course returns for this one as does director Tim Burton and stars Winona Ryder and Katherine O'Hara all of them joined of course by Jenna Ortega one of the hottest Rising Stars right now I mean it's spooky it's funny it is the perfect film to get you in the Halloween mood I think the costume that will be inspired by this film are going to be uh electric um also looking at uh Venom the Last Dance which is the number two most anticipated film if you of course the first two Venom movies combined grossed over a billion dollars worldwide Tom Hardy has said this might be his last time playing Venom it's a popular Marvel character so look for that to do well as well as Joker waen Phoenix back in that Oscar winner remember he won best actor Oscar for that role and this time he's joined by Lady Gaga which uh I mean look you strip away the DC Comics The Joker of it all just to watch wae Phoenix and Lady Gaga choose scenery for a couple of hours sign me up you know I can't help but notice that all of those are sequels or part of a franchise what's going on with movie studios right now well I mean we always see kind of sequels and franchises you know if you think of every movie that comes out as a sandwich right the sequels the franchises the reboots is like the bread kind of holds everything together it's what people love that fam familiarity there The Familiar stuff uh but in between you have the original stuff the art housee movies The Awards contenders you know we're right in the midst of Festival season right now with Venice and toride in Toronto and New York all of them are stuffed with original movies that will be coming to theaters soon so you know I think there's a little bit of everything you got to look between the bread if you want to find stuff that's a little bit different well I want to talk about the best spooky movie that I'm looking forward to this fall it's Beetlejuice Beetle juu um and you know everything else sort of the sequel came pretty soon afterwards you're I'm looking at Katherine O'Hara you're saying like 30 years later she doesn't look like she's aged but three years she's a National Treasure as is the entire cast um talk to us a little bit more about how they finally got that movie made yeah you know I sat down with the cast uh and talked to all of them and Michael Keaton said that he and Tim Burton didn't want to make a sequel just to make one that they don't like sequels that are just made because the first one did well and they just do the same thing again so they really worked for a long time to kind of find a reason uh and Tim Burton said he wanted to find a reason to make it again as well uh and so they found this sort of continuation of the story a new generation uh they found a really great access point for it and it looks great and I I had a lot of fun watching it absolutely fabulous Eric Davis thank you so
