South Australian opposition leader David Spears says he's had enough and is walking away from the state liberals top job after just 2 years in the role Mr Spears says he wants to spend more time with his family but not before delivering a blistering farewell a picture paints a thousand words David Spears arriving so low ahead of his last appearance as party leader to be honest I I've just had a gut for I just do not have the energy at this stage uh or in fact the want to continue in this role and take the party to 2026 his decision to step down comes after months of speculation senior State liberal members claiming he doesn't have what it takes to lead the party into the next state election in 2026 the party has got different groupings within it of course one of my strengths one of my offerings was that I wasn't part of those groupings I came from H coov came up through the community Through volunteer work onto Council and into Parliament environment Minister and then leader of the opposition I thought that s different approach for a liberal party leader uh might uh be what the party was after I guess that's just not the case spear was quick to call out those who claim they can do better it's extremely easy to throw rocks at the leader of the opposition and uh those who are supporting the leader h it's extremely easy to have uh different ideas as to how you might do it better uh it'll be interesting to see if those ideas are are forthcoming in the coming days and if a new leader is able to take the party on a different direction I suspect not one thing you won't get from me H is sniping from the sidelines going forward on paper he States family as the reason for walking away taking its toll on me and it's taken its toll on my family and my friends as for what he does now he'll stay on as MP for the elector of black but after a trip home to Scotland sail off into the the sunset so to speak the liberal party will meet on Monday morning to pick its new leader Deputy leader John gner is the front runner to take the top job manique van Hayden Sky News adelite
