what's the deal with airplane peanuts my next special is going to be on Hulu same comedian new streaming service the decision by Bill Burr to sign with Hulu is a significant move in the comedy world as Hulu attempts to establish their new Department Hulu's laughing now as a legitimate home for standup and rival to Netflix's flourishing comedy division Netflix is a joke which has been dominating the industry as of late becoming the premier landing spot for specials creating a massive Comedy Festival that's produced iconic moments like the Brady roast and continuing to Pioneer the shift towards live stream comedy specials first with Chris Rock's response to the slap in March of 2023 followed by Cat Williams woke folk in May of 24 and on August 3rd Joe Rogan will become the third comedian to live stream around the world on Netflix with his latest special burn the boats there's no question Netflix is at the top of the comedy world right now but Hulu is wise for replicating every step that Netflix took to climb this mountain as just 10 years ago getting a special on Netflix was not something people bragged about my special came out in March of 2014 Netflix is much bigger now than it was then it was a constellation prize to be on they were like it's on Netflix and you're likeu yeah you're like all right it came out you know saw some tweets a newspaper put me in there like it was nothing the same kind of thing like if I when I did Comedy Central presents you you see like tweets about it and you're like all right and nothing changes so I was like nothing changed do you think it's the best place for a special to land yes viewership wise oh it is the only other place that like oddly enough it's it's the polar opposite business model in many ways but they both have the same objective is YouTube meaning that like Netflix is subscription based you pay for it but they've got 140 million people to do it and they also have like some very high level production things there obviously like massive shows movies docu like it is like a Content Haven right and they also became the place like they went after standup mhm so they were like HBO was the place for standup Netflix was like that we are and came to people with checks and like took standup took standup away the move to purposely go out and take over the comedy World by investing large sums of money into stealing all of the best comedians from HBO and Comedy Central takes Big Balls by Netflix and the Run of specials that resulted during Netflix's full court comedy press still remain as some of the best on their platform from Anthony Jessel Nick thoughts and prayers to John meany The Comeback Kid and Tom sagora mostly stories alongside brand new specials from theovon Jimmy Carr Ali Wong Bo Burnham Jim Jeff David Cross Jeff Foxworthy Larry the Cable Guy Cedric the Entertainer Liza slesinger Joe Rogan and Colin Quinn that all came out on Netflix within a 12-month period officially putting the nail in the coffin for all all other streamers when it came to who was number one in the comedy world it's even now to the point where it's common to hear more casual standup fans refer to any special as a Netflix special regardless of what platform it's on one of the few good decisions I made in this business is I saw Netflix for what it was going to be where I was just like oh they're going to all these countries I can become an international and I wanted to start doing that so it was probably that and then getting on Netflix and then putting it out and there was like no competition dude there was when I got on that in 20 8 and very rapidly you know how quickly that company grew Bill Burr played a huge role in establishing Netflix as a major player in the standup world with seven specials on the platform dating all the way back to 2010 putting him up there with Dave Chappelle and even Tom sagora as some of the comedians who originally helped Netflix launch into the premier stand-up streaming position but Hulu starting off with Bill Burr and Jim Gaffigan today is a lot different when Netflix first bet on Comedy the industry overall was much smaller and the comedians they brought on still had a lot to prove which allowed them to create some of today's most popular specials in a time where the comedians needed Netflix way more than Netflix needed the comedians but with Hulu it's the complete opposite odds are Jim Gaffigan and Bill Burr aren't going to have any new fans discover them for the first time on Hulu especially since it's only primarily available in the United States right now Hulu needs comedians much more than comedians need Hulu especially with you YouTube as such a solid option that offers more potential exposure but less upfront money right now it honestly seems like the only popular specials that people actually talk about are on YouTube or Netflix so it would be great for Hulu to emerge as a third viable option and although it seems like they are on the right path it will be difficult to fully catch Netflix especially with Netflix leading the charge on live streaming standup and owning one of the biggest comedy festivals in the world right now that seems to include an annual viral moment it will be interesting to see if Hulu chooses to compete on the in-person level with a festival of their own but someone who definitely wants to do that is Joe Rogan and the comedy Mothership what do you think about a Mothership Comedy Festival now you're talking buddy if there was a number above 100% I would give it to you let's do it I've been thinking about doing that you we're kind of doing it every week experimental but you do other shows you could do weird shows do my storytelling show you'll do like fun weird Simpson in front of a giant crowd do like never before done shows kill Tony riing shows aside from standup specials Hulu is taking another page out of the Netflix Playbook by investing in comedians to create bingeable TV shows Netflix currently has FIS for family by Bill bur tires by Shane Gillis and John mckever and coming soon a dark comedy by Tom sagora in response to this Hulu's Laughing Now is creating an animated series with Andrew Santino and Bobby Lee titled bad friends now it's time to hear a quick word from the sponsor of today's video one rep have you ever Googled yourself you would
