An updated COVID vaccine that covers the new variant circulating will be headed to a pharmacy near you. The FDA signed off on the Moderna and Pfizer shots. Yesterday, the CDC is set to do the same shortly. Our senior health correspondent Monica Robbins joins us now with what we all need to know. Yeah, the FDA approved the updated Pfizer moderna shots as the virus continues to surge. This summer shots are on track to be available within days and targets the KP two strain which accounts for roughly 3% of all us cases according to the latest CDC data. It is a descendant of the highly contagious Omicron sub variant that began circulating widely in the US earlier this year. Now doctors encourage those who have compromised immune systems to make sure they get vaccinated even though most think COVID is nothing more than a common cold these days. You know, for those of us who work in Pulmonary medicine in the intensive care unit, you know, we're no strangers to seeing transplant patients end up on ventilators due to the common cold virus, you know, so, so we kind of see what things can do to everyone and, and there aren't many virus, most of our virus that don't have ways to uh don't have vaccines, don't have ways to minimize the severity of illness. So, wastewater surveillance around Ohio shows COVID cases are increasing in the state. Millions of people have already had COVID in the last few weeks. And current trends are still showing co cases are rising the benefit though of having it during the summer is you will have a bit of immunity for the next three months or so as we go into cold and flu season, at least against having COVID, but still consider getting vaccinated if you don't want to get sick or you need to protect vulnerable, vulnerable people around you. Russ getting it now kind of a silver lining kind of sort of, I guess there. Ok, Monica, when will these updated vaccines be available within days? The MRN A vaccines are much easier to change formulations, which is why they were so beneficial in the first place. What you need to do is check with your pharmacy right now.
