5:15 at the latest and so it gives the guys in some cases almost an extra day at home for Christmas now they can be home tonight whether they're driving home or they catch that last flight of out of time at home at Christmas is important so that's why we do this is to get the guys out of here which is great you know and if you're if you're talking about okay where um if you are a coach that really needs to get a point across to your team where where do you hold the hammer on this well you know I mean that the hammer could come if you don't play very well then your your time at home may not be quite as long as you would like for it to or once you get back here the time spent in the gym might be greater than you first expected now that's uh that may be a glass half empty way of looking at it because the the reality is the time at home with family being able to get back after you know you've been going pretty much since well I mean you you had the trip to to Spain you know you and I did have that right I mean you you you you had the overseas trip right then you get going and it's been a grind I mean you know you need to you need to recalibrate you need to have that time it's healthy for everyone no matter what Walk of Life you're talking about but especially with basketball especially when you know what is coming up once you hit January so there are many people most people listening probably don't know much about wford it's in Spartanburg South Carolina enrollment only 1,750 they are affiliated with the United Methodist Church it is a very good academic institution in fact I was looking online at their admission requirements at 29 act at 3.7 GPA or higher have to be in the top 25% of your graduating class so they are not messing around also interesting wford one of the few Southern schools founded before the Civil War that still exists on its original campus grounds so that's really interesting wow prominent alums Jerry Richardson the owner of the Carolina Panthers and someone I watched on television this morning Craig Melvin the host of The Today Show our proud wford Terriers graduates of wford but I'll tell you what as much success as they had for a long time and obviously a big part of that success was their head coach Mike young who's now at Virginia Tech and had just a tremendous run there you know you stop and think about it people don't realize wford in a six-year stretch from 2009 to 2015 they made four NCAA tournaments and of course 2018 2019 was the year they went 18-0 in the Southern and beat Sean Hall in the first round of the NCAA tournament but now in the era of the transfer portal and nil and so forth it is really paralyzing a program like wford and you could argue maybe at the low major mid- major level as much as any program in the country and here's why I am told they cannot take transfers unless they are freshman or sophomores so upper class transfers juniors seniors forget it they can't do it that's that's a school thing they have no graduate school so they can't take graduate transfers so that's off the board not to mention the admission requirements which are all well and good they're a great academic school but when you add in those other factors you would think that they have to really be choosy about who they take Dwight Perry is a really exciting young coach is in his first full season as the leader of the Watford program but they face some serious challenges that are you know as far as I can tell pretty unique even for a school you know at that level in the Southern Conference well it just strikes me that out of the what how many division one basketball programs are there 363 363 363 that if you had put the vote about transfer portal admissions or whether or not to do it and all of that kind of thing that vote might have been 362 to1 and wford might have been the one yes no doubt you know their their coach has an interesting story and we'll get to this real quick before we go to Coach Boon Dwight Perry's in his first year he's young he's 36 years old he played at Kentucky was an assistant to coach young at wford and now has taken over as Jay mcau has resigned he resigned last year after taking a leave of absence so Dwight Perry took over but Dwight Perry played at Kentucky and was accidentally listed as a starter for the Wildcats 2007 NCAA Tournament game against Villanova when they put the starters in the scorebook they put him as a starter instead of his cousin Bobby Perry by accident so he had to start ky's NCAA Tournament game against Villanova was given instructions by one of the assistant coaches I believe tubby Smith would have been the head coach at UK at that time if I remember right I think you're right foul immediately and we get your cousin in so 3 seconds in despite the wonderful opportunity to start in an NCAA Tournament game against Villanova Dwight Perry did what he was asked to do he fouled 3 seconds in and then his cousin Bobby came in the lineup so how many stories do you hear like that The Accidental starter in the NCAA tournament is now the head coach at wford so you know what if you do the right things I guess life has a way of rewarding you maybe that's the moral of the story that that's that's the way we should look at it the the glass half full part of it the as you're describing it it felt like you were describing oh I don't know maybe someone sitting next to you's nii career you I was just thinking is my 23y year career here at Oklahoma state was it an accident was I not supposed to be here am I going to be replaced am I supposed to check out am I was I supposed to foul like two years in was that the deal listen he uh that that's that's to me is a more up on this final game before the Christmas break and Coach Boon is with with us now is as we get ready for the game as you think about the long term what did the performance on Sunday mean what were the things that happened in that game that have the most value in terms of long-term buildability for lack of a better term I'm not sure if that's a word but you know we can make up words around Christmas that's what our kids do anyway right so um I'd say that just seeing our guys the consistency of the performance right we've been playing well for you know 10 minute stretches or 15 minute stretches and and we put together not quite 40 minutes but as close to 40 minutes as we have this season uh which is really good in my mind that our guys are learning how to consistently perform throughout the game and not having these big long stretches of you know not getting stops or not executing on on the offensive end we didn't have the greatest start to the half cuz uh Oru did come out and try to fight some but we responded pretty quickly after the after a couple possessions so I would say just the consistency of the performance throughout the game was the thing I was most pleased with how much of what you're saying is because you finally had your entire roster available now for a couple of games because that's not been the case for you know wasn't the case for more than the first month of the Season really yeah I mean there's a there's a there's a real value in the continuity of guys practicing together and and playing together and having those reps and really understanding from game to game what they should expect from each other yeah um and early on take some time for guys to figure that out figure out where they fit figure out where where their teammates fit with respect to what they do uh and so it was really really um you know confidence building for me to see you know Javon small have a consecutive game of playing well in a different way not scoring the basketball like he did in the previous games but finding his teammates uh to see Brandon Garrison's confidence continue to grow uh to see Bryce Thompson play a little bit better than he had been playing to see John Michael Wright seem like he's coming out of a slump so seeing some consistency in performance out of multiple guys is really really encouraging you know the assist numbers have been really good and and you look at what's happened this year compared to the previous two seasons they really jump out but in in regard to that and everything else offensively how important is it with what you want to do on offense to have players who have a variety of skill sets and versatility to play multiple positions yeah the the first first part is the willingness to move the ball and trust that it it's going to come back to you when when it's your time um and our guys have a healthy balance of understanding when to be aggressive looking for their shot but also not forcing plays that aren't there and so the assist numbers come from a buyin of each other understanding that you know as Bryce Thompson who's normally been a playmaker for us having somebody who can make the game easier for him out there like Javon small gives him confidence that he'll still be effective and productive just doesn't have to create his shots for himself all the time and the young guys who've never really had to do that Eric Daly jamy Keller um you know Brandon Garrison those guys aren't necessarily having the offense run through them as opposed to having a really good facilitator out them to help out there to help him so he leads the charge in many respects with everything we do offensively because he is unselfish and doesn't mind only shooting the ball two or three times in a game and understand he can have a big impact on winning sure so what about the versatility piece in terms of guys that can play multiple POS yes that's extremely valuable something we haven't had you know particularly from our interior guys having a skilled forward and like Eric Dy Keon Williams whose game has progressed in a major way uh over the course of the end of last season to now uh having those guys be able to initiate the break guard multiple positions be able to stretch the floor from a shooting standpoint which creates driving angles and postup opportunities uh those things are invaluable in the game today and I'm certainly glad that we have the roster makeup uh that we do have from a skill standpoint you know something that that that really jumped out to me and I I think it did to you as well from the Sunday box score the six assist by Brandon Garrison and it seems like I think back about Mitchell Solomon who was a a pretty good passer sure when you're again doing what you want to do offensively how even more valuable is it to have a fan who's a good passer it's it's I mean I don't even know if we can quantify it in all honesty because it really takes uh it makes the defense have to account for him not just standing in post posting up not just being in the middle of the lane you know taking up space and clogging up the lanes he can come out and catch the ball be comfortable in the dribble handoff hit a guy on the back cut very comfortably or in most cases when he is in a post and teams want to double team him being able to play out of a double team so gives us a different way to attack uh it keeps the other team from being able to feast or just assume that he's going to be a high turnover guy which he is not uh and that he actually is a really good out of Spartanburg South Carolina to gagara today before we talk about them this is the last game before Christmas you have six freshman on your team any additional worry about this game because of the Youth of your guys or not so much not always this is always a really concerning game and you look around college basketball you see strange scores uh UCLA losing last night to C State Northridge um we saw Notre Dame earlier this year they were getting better until they had their last game against the Citadel yesterday uh Vanderbilt lost one that they weren't expected to lose so a lot of distractions uh guys looking forward to going home maybe the excitement of that uh overwhelms the ability to focus on the task at hand uh practice tells me otherwise for our guys that we are focused and prepared to come out and play well um but I'm sure we'll we'll be tested today by a really good team and I'm looking forward to seeing how we respond to that test the Counterpoint to that would be is that since Friday it's been all basketball so for a team with a lot of younger guys do you benefit more do those guys benefit more when that is their sole FOC Focus they're not worried about the academic side no question I mean it gives him an opportunity to really focus in on you know watching more film being in the way room getting more shots up really dialing into the game plan um which isn't overly complicated but um when you have the distraction of being able to go home you know in 3 hours after the game you know being able to have the ability to keep them around you as much as possible so that you can keep get get them locked in on the game plan it's critically critically important what gets your attention about wford obviously a team that shoots a lot of Threes they have a and you have a history with them I don't know how many people know that yeah I worked there for a year uh as the associate head coach in 20078 uh had a really good time one of the best years of my coaching uh career had a lot of responsibility uh with the program and so I was thankful for my experience there it's a great program that I have a lot of respect for uh coach Perry in his first year was the uh interim last year got the job in the middle of the year and got it permanently over the summer so uh a team that I know comes in with a high powerered offense uh they don't turn the ball over much uh they shoot a lot of Threes which has been a theme here the last couple of weeks going back to really and then Southern Illinois and then you know on to the last two inate teams and tuls and or Robert so uh we have to defend the three at a high level because they're a very very proficient three-point shooting team yeah making 10 threes a game as a matter of fact your old boss Mike young is now at Virginia Tech we saw them last year in Brooklyn so we got a feel for what they were about it's you know as a buddy of mine said it's old school motion You Don't See Much Anymore is Watford still of that same flavor will we see a lot of similarities to what we saw with Coach Young's Virginia Tech team last year or is it different no you'll see a lot of similarities a lot more movement off the ball than we've seen in some of these recent games where guys with the ball kind of dominate the action uh you'll see a lot of flare screens and cuts away from the ball a lot of staggers uh just things that we haven't seen that much so again we've practiced against it the last few days but it's hard to simulate something in 48 hours that somebody's been doing for 50 plus practices in 10 games so uh our guys will have to use their instincts uh a great deal we'll have to rely on our length and athleticism kind of disrupt the timing of their cuts and passing um and again it'll be a different challenge but some one I'm looking forward to was that something that the two teams that were their toughest games Tennessee and Virginia Tech did to them were they able to disrupt them what did you see in those games because the two games that they played up they lost to Tennessee by 21 and to Virginia Tech by 22 both on the road so so what did you take from those games watching that video the physicality that both of those teams play with um and Tennessee's always been really really physical defensively under the coach Barnes as all his teams have been uh and then Mike young they do a little bit different in terms of packline and not not necessarily pressuring you but they are pretty physical um rebound is always a big key uh not a great rebounding team Watford isn't right uh and they were able to kind of disrupt him from three but they have some guys that are really really dangerous from there you know it's interesting with the Southern Conference I mean obviously when coach young was there his last year they won 30 games they went undefeated in the Southern Conference they won their first game in the NCAA tournament I think against Sean Hall last year fir beat Virginia that is a conference that you know may not be really deep in terms of quality but many times that conference Champion is a really good team that can do some damage in the NCAA tournament yeah going back to Mercer you know about a decade ago beat Duke in the NCA tournament uh East Tennessee state's been successful Chattanooga a few years ago took Illinois uh right to the brink as a representative from that conference so really high quality basketball uh a lot of really good academic schools in that league so you deal with high IQ players often times times and so again they they'll challenge Us in ways that we haven't been consistently challenged we've dealt with more athleticism than we've done skill even though the teams have been able to really shoot the ball but
