Show Start [Music] w [Music] hey what is up everybody Welcome to the guilty is charge podcast coming to you live after Thursday Night Football B what a way for the NFL season to to kick off the 2024 season uh game decided by a tow Isaiah likely were just a half siiz smaller shoe would have been a touchdown maybe going to overtime maybe they go Ravens go for two football game of injes as they S as they say uh from time to time uh joining me tonight is my guy Tyler Tyler what's up man how you doing tonight dude I don't know what to root for on the one hand like I want the Chiefs to win no on the other hand it was already a delayed game we were going to start at 8:30 now 9: when he initially caught that I'm like no way man are we really going to start this stream at 10 pm at this rate H but nope we're here unfortunately did not count as a touchdown but that's the way it goes and against the Chiefs you gotta be perfect you miss it by that much you lose that's just what it is when you play the Chiefs yeah I mean as we all know you know Brook and I are sitting here watching the game at the end and she's like I feel like I'm watching a Chargers game and I was like yeah like honestly just like the more watch the Chiefs it's just like every game is kind of the same like inevitably the other team just happens to make some mistakes here and there and the Chiefs are always the team to capitalize so unfortunately that defense looks nasty you know Patrick Mahomes looks as good as ever and Travis Kelce is suddenly blocking for the first time in his career so I don't know what the heck Taylor swiz has got going on there but uh he's doing the dirty work now for the first time in his career and you know it's uh it's a it's a good time I guess if you're a Chiefs fan unfortunately um so yeah you know I wish they would just go away uh but it is what it is um on the on the bright side I guess there was a lightning strike before the game maybe there's a little bit foreshadowing maybe there a little symbolism for you if you're into that sort of thing um but obviously Tyler and I are here for the Chargers week one preview it has been a very long road this summer but we are super excited to get into some actual regular season football um hopefully you guys are as well and and so so we're going to do our full preview um every single year when we do our pregame previews it's a lot of pre right there but um we're going to have some superlatives to dive into we mix them up a little bit this year uh make them a little bit more interesting but at the end of the day we're going to try and cover these games from as many angles as we can um and hopefully give you guys some insight into each M each matchup each week um and uh we'll go over kind of latest news and notes injury news everything like that and and so on so not a ton to dive DJ Chark Unlikely To Play into from an injury perspective this week um obviously it's week one most most of the teams are are pretty healthy um unfortunately for the Chargers though it does sound like DJ CH is not going to be able to play this week he is dealing with a hip injury um and has not practiced at at has not participated any practices so far this week he didn't participate in practices last week or the week before that so it's it's a bit of an issue potentially for DJ CH we'll see how long it lasts but uh some people surprised you know by the gravity of this he is their starting ex receiver um I don't know why people seem to think otherwise but uh without DJ CH Tyler what are you kind of looking for from this wide receiver room yeah it was tricky so going into this week I wasn't sure and I didn't believe all seven receivers would be active so I was curious given they kept sahoko that were in presence is Brandon rice the one who's not active well now DJ CH does not seem like he's going to be playing so that doesn't I don't really get that question answered this week maybe I never will um as far as him being inactive if he's inactive what am I looking for honestly I think they have enough on the team to work vertically my question is like who does that become and it was easier to answer I think before the preseason but after watching what Brendan rice did in the preseason or what he wasn't able to do not all fault I'm not so sure what their plans are going to be I I don't know if it's not Quenton Johnson not as an X necessarily but to access the Deep part of the field potentially in the way that he sort of dropped the ball in practice quite a bit sometimes I'm wondering if they want to try him out as that boundary guy um or work him in with Palmer and mongi or is it rice I don't know but I I I I don't know what to expect yet I just have not seen this offense so I really do not know yeah there's a lot of uncertainty with the wide receivers in particular when Brendan and simy and Quenton were all playing in the games Brendan was mostly the uh ex re receiver or not excuse me simy was the ex- receiver most frequently of those three um so that could be an option I think the Chargers ultimately are going to kind of work through a bunch of bodies in that specific role I think It ultimately probably means more snaps for lad overall more so than anybody like I think in their Ideal World you have ch and and Palmer as like your two receivers two receiver sets and then lad kind of works in there but I think lad is gonna have to play a lot more you know as the backside Z but it's it's a bit of a conflicting thing for Quenton Johnson because I think of the ex receiver options he's my least favorite option and that's okay like I think he can still have a good rookie season or good sophomore season um playing the Z playing the slot playing other different roles that are not the X receiver because I still just I don't think that's where he can play his best football so I do kind of expect it to be a combination of multiple bodies but I think Palmer is probably like the starting X receiver at least for this game and as long as uh DJ Chu is out yeah I would agree actually I was while you were talking I was also looking at Price picks to see DJ TR is still in on price picks um we'll get to that later yeah once he's declared out I think that will yeah that will change um but yeah we're we're gonna we're going to touch on the vertical aspect of things here in a minute but um from the Raider side of things it is uh again not a ton there I think it will surprise some people that um Jackson PW Johnson is not going to be the Raiders starter in this matchup um it is oh my gosh I had his name written down and I forgot it um Lucas Patrick no Cody whiteair Cody whiteair the former bear um he is the starter over Jackson Paris Johnson for now Jackson Paris Johnson obviously a lot of chargers fans wanted uh them to draft him but he is not starting he is also dealing with an illness so that's just kind of the one thing again most of these teams are are pretty healthy heading into week one yeah not too bad um good you know I want these teams to play as close to healthy as possible to really get you know the Revenge from last season if you will although Raiders fans seem didn't forget the part where e stick was in [Laughter] but yeah it uh the 6321 thing is like it's so stupid to me because they like try and use it as talking trash when 90% of us were actively rooting for the Chargers to lose that game and so the fact that that game ended the way that it did just kind of accelerated the Chargers process and uh you know I told Raiders fans that I work with the next day I said thank you you know that helps us out in the in the long term so cool with me um all right so every single week we're going to dive into what we think are the coolest or biggest or most important coaching storylines um once we get more info on the Chargers and on the other teams we'll maybe get a bit more specific maybe a bit more data driven um obviously kind of casting a general sense here but Tyler what is the biggest or coolest or most important coaching storyline that you're focusing in on on Sunday afternoon yeah I think at the preseason you get to Blitz till Kingdom Come and you get to do whatever you like Chargers EDGE Room because it doesn't really matter in the end and we do anticipate that Jesse Minter is going to Blitz quite a bit I imagine that he does Blitz quite a bit in this game but how much how does that change when you have four really good Edge rushers at minimum you have four quality Edge rushers in theory you could have two Elite ones one extremely good upand Comer and Tuli and then veteran in in Bud Dupri so do you Blitz as much do you need to Blitz as much does that change how does that change when you have to cover Devonte Adams and respectfully the Chargers do not have an individual corner who can cover Devonte Adams an entire game and I don't mean that as disrespect to the corners it's just Devonte Adams and he's been doing it against the Chargers the last couple of years um what happens when you have to cover Brock Bowers what does that look like how often are you blitzing how often are you sending a linebacker how do you adjust for that um but then on the other hand you have Gardner mchu starting he's not an elite quarterback do you rush more because of that I'm so curious to see how this all changes depending on maybe who's in whatever it is I'm curious who the real Jesse Minter is going to be is it heavier leaning into the blitzing or is he gonna dial it back yeah and then how much of that is like simulated pressur versus Blitz rate it it's it's such a curious thing because we we spoke with Sean sad earlier this week and he mentioned that he feels like Jesse Minter is you know more naturally inclined to be aggressive than somebody like Mike McDonald and Mike McDonald was kind of you know middle of the pack in terms of Blitz rate but you know if Jesse M is closer towards wink Martell and Brian fles like I think we're gonna find out pretty quick here and I think from an ed rusher perspective what it does is it gives you a lot of chances at freebies like I think you know the way that offensive lines protect against their pressure looks with three Edge rushers maybe four Edge rushers on the field it just is going to vary by week by week but if you watch the end of the the game tonight the the Ravens were doing something extremely weird where they were sliding protection away from Chris Jones because Chris Jones was like kind of moving around and picking his matchups in the last two plays of the games Chris Jones ended up you know being one-on-one with a running back so freaky weird [ __ ] like that can happen when you are blitzing and being aggressive and you have the guys to do it so it's an extremely important point and Jesse touched on it that even he is just like I can't wait to see these guys out here so you know we can debate where the Chargers are at in terms of the edge rusher room but there's not many teams out there that have a guy like Tuli T pilot as your Edge rusher three and there definitely are not any teams out there that have a guy like Bud depri as their fourth no not at all I mean most years with the Chargers we were hoping for Chris rump or some udfa Edge Rush yes right respect to you know all of them definitely not a bud duri I mean Bud du's been the kind of edge three they've had for a while you know we were like oh vanoi edge3 awesome no B BR the fourth guys is tremendous I'm excited to see that as is but then what is what has M to do with that yeah bu dpri was the best Edge rusher on the Falcons last year like for an for an actual like NFL defense so yeah um it's it's just such a cool point I can't wait to see it um I tweeted this out I I think people who are talking about KH Mack aggression are are just really going to feel really stupid watching this season I watching him in person and up close he looks fresh he looks mean he looks motivated and it seems like the entire Chargers defense just has like a different Spirit about them so that kind of works into my thing you know there's a lot of scheme Harbaugh Identity things that we can certainly get into later on but this is a real like identity game because both of these teams want to be physical they want to be the aggressor like that was Antonio Pierce's whole shtick was you know the Raiders were soft and then they hired him and then they were physical they were tough they aggressive um and specifically you look at where these teams want to be the bully and where they want to establish the physicality it's the Chargers offensive line versus the Raiders defensive line like you know we heard Jim Harbaugh they want the offensive line to be the tip of the spear you tweeted out the clip of uh of uh was that the offensive line coach I forget yes this team loves offensive linemen they want to to you know feature this offense there was almost almost an offensive lineman that was going to be the team's fullback like they love offensive lineman and the Raiders went out and they get Christian Wilkins to give Max Crosby a legitimate running mate they want the defensive line to be their star of the show and so it's just going to be a true true trench game and whoever can you know punch and you get the most body shots in here in this game that's probably who's going to win like at the end of the day for me I think you watch this game and you watch the film back the X and as and O's are probably not going to matter hot it's probably just going to be who's more physical who can run the football who can protect the quarterback and that's Jim Harbaugh's thing like he wants to be physical he wants to establish this identity well the Raiders potentially are one of the best ways to test that theory and test that culture and and come out of the Gat swinging and if you don't the Raiders could punch you right in the face end up winning this game so I think for me we're going to dive into some of the X's and0 stuff but whose identity can shine brightest in this game is ultimately going to decide who wins it in my opinion yeah the Chargers have not had a game against the Raiders in a very long time where we thought both coaches wanted to go for the less glitzing glamour more just like punch you in the mouth trenches football it's been a while and I guess that's really the case when you have Philip Rivers as your quarterback when you have Justin Herbert as your quarterback I get it but it's been a while since you had both teams really just want to go with that mentality so the good news is it's not like it's you know new school versus old school and one has to win it's just we're all going to play this style of football let's see who's the toughest who's got the best offensive line defensive line um who's toughest who's toughest the longest as Philip River said so stuff like that I it's very exciting I don't know if like this is the game where we find out you know if Jim Harbaugh era of football in 20124 works but we get to see like can it at least win one game and then in the future with more difficult opponents we can see if it can really stand up to you know the Chiefs and the Ravens who we just saw win tonight or well one of them won tonight play tonight yeah and I think you saw some of that tonight where it's like every team is going to come out in week one with a different kind of energy every team thinks they're good even like the Panthers players probably like yeah we could be really good this year and then once you like get week one out of you like you just never know like week one can bring so many silly foolish things to the table but what I think is going to hold up in this game is who can be the most physical who can be the toughest and who's going to fold first who's going to make the mistake up front first I think is going to determine who wins this game yeah um couple super chats real quickly uh obviously from Mrs Andrea Shon M Shon game number one let's go uh Shon family is gonna be in attendance so obviously if you guys see Tyler say hello but uh you know this is Battle of the shones you know Chargers versus Raiders tell as oldest time yep it's gone well for the Chargers and myself for the home games the last few years but uh you know my mom has to just keep my dad and I at a distance beat each other up yeah uh me and my brothers and my dad we all uh we all root for different teams so it's it's very interesting unfortunately one of my brothers is a big Chiefs fan so that's that's always fun um all right next category here we'll get well I see NSN super chat we'll get to that in a minute here I think that's you know an appropriate way to do that but um we're gonna touch on a player or a unit that we are most excited to watch each week um we just talked about I think some of this matchup but Tyler who are you most excited to watch this weekend I'm stoked Offensive Line Discussion I got this one uh I have to what is three first round picks look like on the offensive line what does that look like and what does that look like not just the investment in the position but an entire organization centering itself around offensive line with Jim Harbaugh with Ben Herbert what does that look like and I'm not ex like obviously Trey pipkins Bradley Boseman talented in their own rights but like when you have three former first round picks along the offensive line what does that look like like what does that look like um when your investment matches you know your investment as an organization into developing these guys what does it look like in terms of pulling these guys and moving these guys what does joal look like you know we we saw just very very brief glimpses of them particularly against the Rams mostly other than Boseman playing together and it was like wow this could be pretty fun this year um I've liked watching offensive line stuff defensive line stuff more than the skill positions and this year sounds like a lot of fun so I'm excited to see what that looks like yeah I obviously did my training back note training book hello training camp notebook that was a tough one to say um a few weeks ago and I just was blown away by the attention to detail that this regime was giving to the office offensive line um and Daniel POA wrote about that this week you know every time there's like special teams drills a lot of the starters will just kind of like hang out and and get some drinks and obviously like you know chat it up not the offensive line not under this regime like every time that they were doing Special Teams the offensive linemen were out working on stuff they were doing stunt pickups they were doing double team drills they were doing one-on-one passet it's like the attention to detail that this regime has put on the offensive lineman I think is really going to elevate everybody in this unit and what that looks like with a guy who was a second team allp pro as a rookie and Zion who I still believe in the ceiling you still believe in the ceiling I think it's really going to shine bright this year Joe Al you know some people considered him like one of the best offensive tackle prospects of like recent memory even ran Slater like kind of joked how talented like like more talented than rashan he is um so this this regime like it it they put all the work into it the players have put in a ton of practice they're healthy heading into week one I have my concerns about the death but this starting five has the chance to be really really special yeah I think so and Zion I don't know if you saw the clip of everyone saying that they ask like who's the strongest guy on the team and basically everyone went down the line and said it was Zion even just watching him on film it's it's starting to look like that like I really buy what it looks like when you see the pictures of him then whatever saying about him and watching him on film I'm ready man I'm ready to be right I'm sick of us jumping up and down being used against us I'm ready to be right I know people I see people using that on Twitter and I'm like we're all draft nerds like it we if you love a player in an evaluation process and then your team drafts them like you get excited and we were there also hoping not for Trevor Penning like that was half of the vertical was that so yeah yeah half of the vertical was that but no man I'm just I'm so excited like the the Run game I think you saw some glimpses like a lot of the Ravens bones that Greg Roman established as like a run game guy are still being used in Baltimore and the way that those offensive lineman get out in space is just so much fun to watch and the amount of pin and pole and counter and things like that it's just going to be great I think it's really going to feature these guys in a in a fantastic way yes so we we have Raiders fans in the comment so that's very good I'm glad you guys have in charers that's really really funny that's good um you know I don't have a we don't have a sponsor for like medical professional help but sounds like you got an issue so go ahead and go ahead and take care of that uh see somebody yeah uh who am I most Justin Herbert Vertical Passing Attack excited to watch I went with the lay up here I went with Justin Herbert obviously um but I think we all deserve to watch Justin Herbert after watching the preseason games but in particular I wanted to point this out because it's just I think a lot lot of people have reservations about the Greg Roman offense and I understand like there's he's never really been a guy to like develop layers of a passing game and that obviously can run its course but what I know about the Greg Roman offense is that this is going to get vertical and they're going to let Justin Herbert Chuck the ball downfield and that should be really really exciting for charers fans all around uh you know who are are are hoping that Justin Herbert can can provide some explosive plays I think you'll see a lot of them this season Lamar Jackson every single year under Greg Roman had an average depth of Target for the whole season over nine yards and one season his eight out was 10 it was 10 yards it was crazy they Chuck the ball downfield it's deep play action shots it's Crossing routes it's overs it's posts it's fantastic to watch when you have the guy who can take advantage of the deep parts of the field and obviously we know that Justin Herbert can do it Justin Herbert last last year with Kell Moore set a career high in ADOT of 8.2 so again Lamar Jackson every year under Greg Roman is above nine yards average up of Target Justin Herbert's average of depth of Target highest wise was 8.2 so it puts it into perspective some of that is obviously the players right like I think Justin Herbert is much more prone to checking the football down when he doesn't like the reads and we saw a lot of that when the injuries happen and it was like okay Keenan or Mike are my number one they're not open I'm going all the way back down to Austin Eckler for my checkdown like there was just like it's just kind of who he is you know he is kind of a processor that way but I think we are going to see him be much more vertically inclined this year I think we saw some of that in practice where they would dedicate an entire day of practice to Vertical deep passing game Concepts so I think if you are a fan of big guy throw football far you're going to be very happy watching Justin Herbert this year and I think this week in particular where the Raiders don't have the greatest secondary in the world um I think we could see the Chargers push the ball down the field and maybe have a bigger week for the wide receivers than people might think yeah big guy throw football far sounds good to me it sounds like a ton of fun it's it's interesting because they want to throw the ball down the field obviously we know that they drafted L makoni to do that they brought in DJ Char obviously might not play but they brought him in to do stuff like that Josh Palmer the last time we saw them against the Raiders at home was able to do that so they can cap off that that game with the win they also don't even really have a guy we'll see what ends up happening with some of the other players but I don't know that there's a third down pass catching running back on this team really that's available and they don't really have an established tight end sorry they don't have an established pass catching tight end like we'll get that out of the way maybe Hurst is a guy occasionally well this Ley can be a guy occasionally there's no Mark Anders out there there's no even really like Gerald Everett from last year you know so it's it's kind of just pushed the ball down the field like big guy throw football far maybe all that we get and hey that sounds kind of fun to me like you said you know the Raiders have always been very like tenacious and it's been difficult to play them I think their corners and their safeties have always outplayed what they are on paper but it's still not a great group and the Chargers I think can definitely take advantage of them yeah their second corner right now is is projected to be jakorian Bennett who had the worst cover grade in the league of any qualifying Corner last year um and Jack Jones like there's a lot of excitement about Jack Jones and he had like one of the craziest interceptions I've ever seen in my life against the Chargers last year but I I don't know if like him as a legitimate starter is matching the idea of him as a starter so we we've never really seen him been be a true like quarterback one um you know I guess they have Nate Hobbs still but you know that's more of a slot uh player for them so I think the Chargers could create some explosive plays downfield and and obviously we as Chargers fans hope that happens a lot with Justin Herbert oh yes I feel like we've been saying that every year but this will be the year it really happens yeah this just the you know the short passing game is not really a Greg Roman Advantage he can dial it up de he can dial up a deep shot man but uh short passing games not exactly as strong Su for Greg Roman not so much that's okay um all right opposite side of things we wanted to talk about what is what is going to keep us up at night about these specific matchups obviously I think for Raiders Key Matchups the Raiders there's two very obvious ones and I think we'll cover them um but for you Tyler what's what's keeping you up a night when you are looking at this Raiders team yeah I I hate uncertainty and while I'd like to go with Crosby versus Alt I expect alt to struggle and that's okay he has a year to get better it's his rookie year switching sides I don't really have expectations outside of let's see some growth Maybe there's some inconsistencies fine what keeps me up at night the most is the player we have not seen which is Bradley Boseman because if Bradley Boseman doesn't work we can kiss the playoffs get by and I know that sounds like wow we're putting so much on you know just the center but we've seen the difference a great Center can make on this team and unfortunately we've seen the opposite where there's you know below average Center play or bad backups we've seen how bad this offense could be and just watch the ceiling of this offense crater because of poor offensive line play from the center who does so much for the offensive line with by the way like Joe Al switching sides Tre pin New Right Guard Zion still trying to figure things out new offense new scheme there's so much going on if Bradley Boseman doesn't work Seasons win totals are capped you know and I think some of the doubt you know among the offensive line or among or sorry among outside media members or whatever about this team could be at Center and for us we were so surprised that they only went with Bradley Boseman and that was it and brenon heus is the backup you know there's there's so much writing on Bradley Boseman to be better than he was last year at age going to be 30 this year it's it's keeping me up at night that is the one thing the whole offseason that's that's kind of kept me up like is it going to work and we didn't see him in the preseason so we're GNA find out on Sunday what kind of Bradley bz you know are we getting and I'd like to say he's going to be a great Center I'd like to say he's a a solid Center you know but the numbers aren't great from last year I looked at Brandon Thorn's offensive line rankings didn't even make the top 15 centers didn't make the honorable mentions after that that's with Kelsey retiring and Jensen retiring and Lindsley retiring so didn't really make like the top 20 from starters from last year so I think he'll be better I definitely think he'll be better than he was in Carolina but how much better can we at least get average play if we can go average play no problem you're paying him as as much that's kind of what he's been sometimes above average um but if if he doesn't work and we find out that he's a liability on Sunday this season is not going anywhere yeah I I think you know the Chargers didn't have a ton of Premier resources to go get obviously they could they could there was no Cory Lindley type in free agency anyway but the Chargers didn't have that kind of money even if they wanted to go get that kind of player so Bradley Boseman it's just kind of like a we're just going to like have a high floor of this position it's not really like we're going to have like a high-end starter um you know he had the guard flexibility had the connections I feel comfortable with him as a run blocker I do think that he is you know can be a force in that regard and I think just his ability to move and and move people out of the way it's it's just a real strength of his the pass protection is the issue and I'm hoping that like having Zion break out potentially and having Trey you know be a bit of a stabilizing Force at Right Guard you know can help him in his in his pass protection issues because in Carolina the guard situation there was like the worst guard situation in league and that was evidenced by them going out and spending $200 million on like barely serviceable guards like no shade to Robert hunt and the other guy Damen Lewis but like they're not exactly great players um so the Panthers knew that the guard situation was not great and and I think that showed up from time to time with Bradley wman so I think he'll be better than what he was in Carolina just purely based off of you know scheme familiarity Supporting Cast around him you know obviously his relationship with the coaching staff is is is what hard to discount but I think some fans are kind of expecting him to be like this awesome Center and I just don't think he's that I think he can be a reliable starter but that's probably his ceiling in this offense and that's why he's signed for the contract that he is yeah yeah I mean the Panthers released him you know it's not like they were desperate to try to hold on to him or the Chargers got lucky um and unfortunately I I can't even necessarily say that oh with like a better coordinator and a better Coach he'll be better like John Harbaugh and he had Greg Roman you know back in the day it's not like he was an elite all World Center then so I think I think we know who he is um I'm just hoping it's not last year's guy yeah and I think his individual tests are probably more daunting the next couple of weeks because Brown and keu Bon and those guys like they're legit players the Raiders don't really have like a true nose tackle that's like gonna you know terrify me because Wilkins is more like a three Tech fourtech so that is a tough matchup otherwise but you know I think boseman's impact is is gonna be felt because the Raiders do have a pretty stout interior for sure um I'm gonna again take one of the easy ones here it it's Devonte Adams you you hinted at this earlier the Chargers cornerback room is is kind of like our main concern I think I'm a little more optimistic after watching them in person and watching them perform in the preseason but you know Asante semi Jr and Christian Fulton are not exactly true quarterback ones and you know we don't really know what the slot Corner position is really going to be and just your Taylor just kind of won that position battle by default like he was never really tested so quarterback room is is certainly a a question mark and I and I respect the optimism that some fans have about the defense but I think quarterback room is still a weakness there so Devonte Adams he might not be one of the best you know three receivers in the league anymore maybe he's been passed by in that regard but he's still a really really freaking good player in four games against the Chargers he has racked up 34 receptions on 54 targets for 494 yards and four touchdowns uh that averages out to 8.5 receptions per game 123.5 yards per game and one touchdown per game so yeah that's keeping me up at night like even with Garder mchu like at quarterback it's very simple on offense to just go throw the ball to 17 and I think that's going to be their offense like basically for the whole season that's what it was under Aden oconnell yeah I think this is a tough tough test for the secondary right off the bat and even if it like outside of Devonte Adams they have two good young tight ends they have jacobe Meyers and this is a tough test for the secondary group but how do you slow down Devonte Adams because he's going to be the guy who moves the chains he's going to be the Red Zone guy he's gonna be the guy who's gonna get 15 targets he is the bulk of their offense can you slow him down to six catches for 90 yards if you can do that I think that's a pretty big win for the secondary off the bat yeah I don't remember what did for most of the game against the Vikings they were able to kind of figure out Justin Jefferson and hold him for a bit I don't remember where the statl ended up being he had to get to some number and he didn't get it he missed it by a few yards I think it was like three straight 100 yard g a four straight 100 yard games like that stat line whatever that was the fact that I can't remember it it means it's probably not too bad you're talking about last year last year's yeah yeah yeah uh I guess the Chargers he had seven catches for 149 yards in a touchdown well oh it wasn't 150 that's what it was it wasn't it wasn't 150 never mind okay so let's take let me just throw that entire comment and start over I like what Stephen's talking about about the 90 yards um yeah I the whole oh it's Garder mshu like they're not going to do so well on offense they did it with Aiden oconnell they did it with not the best seasons from Derek Carr sorry like Devonte Adams is one of those players whether it's you know you know Andre Johnson and the Texans or Larry Fitzgerald and the the Cardinals like the quarterbacks can be bad but these guys are good and just get open so um you know I don't really believe in mchu all that much it's some even my you know my dad's a Raiders fan it's just kind of like all right you know they went with mshu cool but um he he'll do his damage I just hope like you say it's not it's not that much yeah I I can live with like 85 90 yards if this is another like 150 in one game where he's just like dominating it's just I think it's going to be a longer day than we hope and Devonte is the kind of guy where it could be short inter deep he could do everything still at this stage of his career so um players like him Justin Jefferson Tyreek Hill it just doesn't really matter who the quarterback is like you know Justin Jefferson's probably gonna put up like 1,00 yards and 12 touchdowns with Sam darnold this year like these guys just they know how to get open they know how to separate they know how to play you know contested catch situations and I hope the Chargers be try and get like a little physical with him I think they try and you know press him a bit more so maybe this is kind of more of a a Christian Fulton game than an Assante game because Christian Fulton's a little bit bigger a little bit longer arms um you know I think you you get physical with him you bracket him safety help all the stuff like let anybody else beat you on on offense besides Devonte Adams yes and unfortunately they have Brock Bowers right there too so it's it's going to be a lot tougher than I think people are are making it out to be yeah and and at the end of the day it is a rivalry game and these games are always close even when the even when the Chargers were at their best and the Raiders were bad it was still tough game so um okay we have prize pick selections of the week every single week um hopefully you guys were able to take advantage of the prize picks uh code again that is priz picks.com guilty if you're new to the show uh for tonight's games hopefully you guys were able to to get some of that action so um we're gonna have prize pick selections of the week we'll take three um selections for the Chargers game every single week that we like this Prize Picks Selections of the Week could be Chargers or the other side and there's obviously always some games that you know we might like otherwise so um there is the Caleb Williams special going uh so make sure and choose that so um my uh prize pick selections of the week all ended up being the running back selections for some reason I think those were just the the uh selections that I was most drawn to so to me like one of the easiest ones I look for was Gus Edwards uh his his number of touchdowns is at 0.5 I think we're going to see Gus Edwards have a big touchdown season I don't know if it's going to be a big yardage season but he is the goal line back and I expect the Chargers to get into goal line situations and Pound The Rock we saw that in the preseason where Jim Harbaugh Tred out two extra offensive linemen the now fullback Scott mlock the you know a tight end like they're going to pound the Rock at the goal line and I expect Gus Edwards to be uh that guy so I'm taking taking more on 0.5 touchdowns for Gus Edwards I'm also taking JK Dobbins more rushing yards his number is at 35.5 I think if JK Dobbin stays healthy I think he is the more likely candidate to be the yardage leader and he's looked explosive in EN Camp by all accounts 35.5 in a game where you're trying to maybe minimize the opposing pass rush that feels a little low to me and that that that's like one big potentially big run from him and he can hit that so um I took that one um we've talked about the concerns about defensive tackle and zamir white is like the only running back for the Raiders that is getting touches I think so I'm taking more for zamir white on 14.5 rushing attempts again similar kind of thing right the Raiders are obviously going to be cognizant of the Chargers Edge rushers what's the best way to neutralize a pass rush running the football so I think we see a big game for all three of the main running backs in this one and I'm taking more on multiple selections for them yeah I really like the zamir white one hopefully it's the most inefficient 15 carries ever ever but yeah I I could definitely see that I don't see why they'd want to pass it that many times I don't think the Chargers interior is like so incredibly good that you're worried about it as much is the Raiders interior offensive line all that great not really but I could see them running it a lot more like you said the Chargers backs are tricky because you know one we don't really know yet how that split will look and two you know could it could vary week to week we don't know Dobbins could end up being that guy maybe it's Edwards but I love the Edwards touchdown score one we could very well get like you know like the Derrick Henry game tonight what was his numbers not that great the efficiency not that great scored a touchdown though yeah yeah they go they go down there in the red zone and they get the five yard line like it's it's Gus Edwards season you know so and it's not Donald Parham season you know where maybe he could have you know taken a touchdown here or there uh it's it's firmly Gus Edwards right now I would think until they Explore More in the passing game so that's that's definitely an easy one there for me I went with another easy one uh khil Max uh set at 0.25 sacks right now so he even just needs a half sack to clear the more there for that one and any other team and a lot of weeks I don't love taking the the sacks because it's really just All or Nothing um 0.25 sacks against the Raiders feels like Easy Money feels like free money which means it's totally not going to work but like I'm going to put money on something I feel like that's a good one then I'm actually going to especially with DJ CH trending a different direction lad makoni is 35.5 receiving yards I would go with the more on that one because now they're going to rely on him a lot more to access that deep part of the field he is the guy they have you know this regime has invested the most in so far so I I think that was one's a pretty good one um you hit the running backs I might have talked about as well um if you want to go because you can't just bet or you can't just Place wager whatever on just one team yeah so you can flip it over to the Raiders and Devonte Adams at basically whichever point you end up finding him at I would go with the more there unfortunately because his average so far is 30 to 40 yards higher what his projection is on prize pick yeah um good point from mighty here he says heads up for prize picks tackles is the one that hits every time if you pick a linebacker so um that is a great point we don't know really who's Like Jesse Min spoke about the linebacker rotation today which I I wanted to find a way to talk about them and I just couldn't today yeah but M said that they're probably gonna rotate all three guys and he even mentioned Troy Dy like as a potential option of playing too so I don't know which linebacker you're gonna choose but I think Denzel Perryman is probably a safe bet because he is the play caller he is the team captain I think he probably at least in the short term is going to lead this unit in snaps so that's a good point there the Raiders linebacker unit is obviously a bit more straightforward they are starting uh Divine Diablo and Robert Spain and they don't really have any competition behind them so if you want to go that route I also think Derwin tackles if he's on there is probably a safe one as well yeah yeah I don't see any of the Chargers Defenders at all maybe I'm missing it on there I don't currently see him but if I missed him somebody let me know Denzel Perryman kind of a Revenge game for him too so maybe Revenge game homecoming game at the same time so yeah lot to play for um yeah is there a Simi foko one because he needs to step up after they dropped his uh Middle School photo earlier today I don't know if you saw that one but that was that was that was brutal from the so funny though it was so funny though Dern derwin's photo was hilarious um Cameron Dicker being like dressed up just like wholesome and then the trom boner thing she's like trom boner best kicker in the league is just like trom boner I know I love it whatever that's how confident he is right yeah uh Cameron Dicker he is his field goal number is at 1.5 that's a little high for me but I think we will see coach harra be a little bit more conservative so that's that's definitely definitely yeah I don't mind that one should be a close game so yeah definitely don't mind that one and and obviously they've watched Cameron Dicker hit from you know 55 plus in the preseason like they are very confident I'm sure in his kicking ability yeah so I'm searching the Chargers Defenders by name and they're not even popping up so hopefully prize pick can get on that action but again that is prix.com guilty code guilty if you guys want to get in on the action every single week all right so wrap it up we're going to cover some X factors and then we're going to do some uh game pick here and then we'll touch on the rest of those other uh X-Factors and Game Picks super chats from here so Tyler who is your exactor of the Chargers week one match up with the Raiders no particular player here I just want to know and I want to figure out and see who this third down pass catcher would be out of the backfield is there one who is that guy is it Edwards is it Dobbins is it Vidal is it whoever um I have no idea I really don't know I couldn't see Jack squat in the preseason um two of the guys didn't play and E sck wasn't help the rest of the guys so I really don't know none of these guys are particularly they don't have a great track Rec of being that guy now you go from 4,000 targets to Austin Eckler to I don't know who is that who is that guy going to be you know I don't think it is a requirement but you do have to be able to check it down occasionally who are those guys who steps as a third down pass protector um pass catcher I don't know I I really don't know so for that me to me that's a it's a big X Factor I think a lot of people are penciling in lad as like the third down guy and I understand why like his skill set would lend itself towards that role but that's also a lot of pressure to put on a rookie and so I just I I don't know if that's maybe where I would want them to like lean fully into um I will say whenever I was at practices whenever they got into Red Zone Third Down drills the tight ends were very very active so maybe that's kind of where Hayden Hurst will disy can kind of carve out a role and and provide some extra value for this team yes I'm curious also if it maybe like Stone smart factors in there um all that yeah so much uncertainty like usually like we know exactly like what we're getting from everybody you know it's just like there's so much uncertainty which is why I think this team is is so interesting to start the season um my exactor is the aforementioned Denzel Perryman I think this is such an interesting role for him um he hasn't really played in this kind of system before where it's very Blitz heavy very downhill from a linebacker perspective um obviously we know what Gus Bradley's scheme was it was not that way um he was in that same kind of scheme last year in Houston the Raiders also Gus Bradley so he's played a lot in like the the Gus Bradley like we're gonna stay back and we're not really gonna Blitz and all this stuff well Jesse M's gonna Blitz you quite often I think as a run defender in particular is where I want to see how they use him because one thing that the Ravens would do with Patrick Queen is just basically have him go full speed downhill and take on a blocker and get him like out of the picture and that was the way that Patrick Queen created some extra value for himself it's a way that he just kind of became a a more reliable player um and it also allows your other linebacker to just be able to clean up and it gives them a lane to go make some tackles so Denzel Perryman I think can uh be in this kind of role and and protect the young linebacker whoever he's playing next to whether that's Dion Henley or Junior Coulson um and just be a physical Hammerhead leader and this team I think is is set up to use him in that way and I think in this matchup in particular zamir white was actually one of the most efficient running backs in the league when it comes to rushing yards ere expectation I think he was second in the league in in that metric um and so he's he's a guy who at least last year showed that he can get more than what is expected of him he can do the yards after contct he can be physical and I think Denzel Perryman I think he's right in a perfect matchup for him to match zir white few times in the ho can you get him down to the ground can you get you know Dylan Parham and these other Raiders offensive lineman the tight ends who are going to pull and be active um can he just kind of disrupt the rushing Lanes of the Raiders I think is a key point to how they can be successful against the run this year and especially this week yeah we talked about Devonte Adams the last couple of years but the Chargers have also and we've seen it trying to get into the postseason or just trying to stop anything in Vegas uh they can't stop the run they have had difficulties doing that denel Denzel Perryman I think this suits him perfectly um both his play style at this point in his career with the young guys he's playing with I think it suits him perfectly and it also just seems to also fit like the way Navaro Bowman coaches as well yeah I was thinking like oh Deion Henley like yeah sure more the coverage guy but he's not quite the physical guy or Jun colson's coming back from you know his surgery not quite ready to get in there n these guys are totally confident playing downhill too so I think the vibe from Bowman the vibe that Perryman has as the team captain with the way m is goingon to play him I think it's perfect so I think he's absolutely an xfactor and like I said Revenge game and a homecoming game all in one so it's a fun one yeah it's been fun to see him come back in this latter stage of his career so I'm excited to see what this linebacker room in general I'm just so curious how it works out um all right let's get to our game picks here um I'll start us off I I understand why people are having a lot of fun in this matchup but I do think it is going to be closer than people in the fan base are expecting I think the last time I checked the the Vegas spread was only three points outright so uh Vegas is essentially basically considering this a a wash in terms of who is is favored here so this is a game that I think is going to come down to like I said earlier who can be more physical who can establish their identity and I think the Chargers will be able to do that I think the Chargers will again take some lumps I think I'm not expecting a Joe Al you know perfect game I'm not expecting him to erase Max Crosby I think if you're expecting that you're underselling how hard it is to be a rookie offensive tackle and and also under selling how good Max Crosby is so I do think we'll see Max Crosby make an impact to me he's like one of the three or four best defensive players in the league um so they'll take some lumps but I think overall as the game continues to go on this team is is going to prove out to be the more physical team and I think we've seen that in some glimpses here and there like the Chargers leading the league in uh rushing yards before contact is a great sign in the preseason the way that the secondary and linebackers were just attacking downhill consistently is a great sign so I do think the Chargers are going to come out on top in this matchup but I think it is going to be much closer than people in the fan base are expecting so I'm thinking this is going to be a lowc scoring game I think both teams are going to want them run the football both teams want to play defense um I'm actually changing what I put in our in our rundown but I'm going to go Chargers win 23- 20 um comes down to the wire as Chargers Raiders games tend to do I think it's gonna be an electric matchup I cannot wait to see the start of the Jim harbot era and what this looks like against the Raiders in a rivalry setting there's so many cool story lines that we didn't even touch on today so I can't wait to watch it I think the Chargers win a a close one and uh maybe it's a field goal at the end maybe a stop at the end but I think it's 2320 is what I'm going with yeah you and I are on the same page I think two things in history to look at one the Rivalry it's always been close you know if my dad's still in the chat I don't know we've been to enough games we go to the game every year and it doesn't matter who's at quarterback what's happening even if the Chargers are way more talented and the Raiders are supposedly terrible it's always close I've seen them steal games from the Chargers it's always difficult it's always always difficult um so it should be close but the Chargers recently have been pretty good about winning at home against the Raiders and I think at the end of the day if you're taking the Chargers it's pretty simple it's Justin Herbert like he is yeah the much better quarterback than Gardner mchu hopefully Raiders fans can at least admit that you think your team's better fine you can't tell me mchu is a better quarterback than Justin Herbert Herbert's a whole couple of the tiers better than Garder mchu and I think at the end of the day that's what's going to matter so um maybe we get a cool like special teams thing happens you know uh Darius Davis breaks one off for a touchdown I said he'd get what six this year um so start one tomorrow see how he does on a on a touchdown I have the Chargers winning 24 to 20 so keep it close a good win wins a win I'll take it go to Carolina and then maybe we'll predict a a better score there yeah uh I would definitely expect a better score next week than this week um Panthers are very very bad I think if the Panthers win like five games that's a good season for them um yeah I just like think this is going to be a tough physical game I this really like old school like Chargers Raiders Vibes to me I just think it's going to be a really nice test for the Chargers out of the gate but I do expect them to to come out Victoria so um hopefully everybody who can is able to go to the game uh you know I saw a thing that Vivid Seats is projecting 60% Raiders fans we'll see what that looks like um but hopefully it's at least 50-50 I would love to see a a a true you know Chargers Advantage come out in this one so make sure Tyler and Miss mamun are not alone in this one yeah I mean at this point like guys they they spent a lot of money on the head coach they did the thing that we all wanted they very much put a ton of effort into The Branding that video today was awesome so good so good and look the videos are always good but some people always just freak out over everything the Chargers put out that video today really like brought me back like it was like everything I needed it really worked like that was an awesome video so like please please go support them show them that like I don't know thanks for going getting the head coach that we all basically wanted um and all the effort they put into the season so the Chargers have done the work the team has done the work it's our turn go out and support them and uh yeah don't leave me by myself 6040 is pretty good I've seen like 955 before um I've been in that five it's not fun so I'd love 6040 that that would honestly be a win yeah uh there's some things that I was able to hear at training camp that are going to be really really cool to see on game day um the Chargers I think revamped like a process that was already really really cool because they this production team for the Chargers just is constantly pushing the boundary they're trying to be the best in the business and make this environment just like a really you know fan-friendly experience and make it super entertaining and make it a show and it's just like you know they are trying to do their absolute best to keep you guys entertained when you're there and I think they were doing a great job of it they apparently were not super happy with how it was and so they're like you know let's push this thing to the next level and from what I saw in the preseason what I heard at training camp it's going to be an epic epic experience this year in Sofi stadium so I will be there in the Chiefs at the Chiefs game super excited for that one uh me and broe have not been able to go to a Chiefs game before because it's always like a Sunday night game and you know we have to teach the next day and work the next day so we're not able to do that so very excited to get get down for a Chiefs game uh in a few weeks from now so uh let's hit on some of these super chats before we close out we appreciate all of you guys tuning in uh I was not expecting over 300 people in the live chat uh at 954 at night but we we love you for it um NSN wants to know if there's anything that will surprise you versus the Raiders uh yeah there will be something that will surprise me against the Raiders what will that be I mean in a good surprise way joal handles Max Crosby no problem that's a very good surprise way and then we have a whole we'll do I'll do another handstand if that's the case um Michael Mayer outpaces Brock Bowers in yards and he's actually the number one tight end in terms of receiving yards sure that could surprise me it would just be so classic Raiders that they take Brock powers and then just just like don't use him I think they're going to use him a lot but it would just be kind of funny because they didn't use Michael Mayer for like half the year last year yeah then he was good and he was good weird how that works yeah um I think like in terms of a surprise for me I like the tight end usage I think is something I'm really curious about like I I think they in practice really emphasize that unit um we talked in the summer maybe this is like a big Hayden HST rebound year that would be a great way for him to show it off to start this season and just have a good week against the Raiders would be cool to see [Music] um you know I'm less bullish on the defensive tackle room than the coaching staff seems to be so do we get like a punu for just like massive game that would be awesome so that's probably where I would start that would be sick yeah I like that NSN says he loves the Zion reaction still it was it was so much fun if You' never been to the draft in person with your friends I strongly encourage it because it everything is cool and they didn't take Trevor Penning which was like you know so much of a thing for us that we were scared about and they took a player that we really loved so yeah you know when like Harry Potter's sitting there he's like not slitherin not Slytherin that was like us but Trevor dude like you can announce anything right now you can anoun a quarterback uh but yeah that was part of it but we we love Zion too yeah listen arjent was jumping for joy he's an analytics guy they took a guard and the analytics guy was jumping for joy so like you know good Prospect yeah uh shoman earlier said Sam muster season baby he is the practice squad Center for anybody who uh missed that point so I like that they sign a veteran you know Center in the practice squad I'm a little not super crazy about Brenan heus just being like handed the backup center spot so maybe we see Sam muster get some time this year I don't know I hope not obviously Sam muster season maybe then we're like picking number five season baby like that's where we're at then we're doomed yeah if Radley buzzman goes down then we can then we can start talking about the Arizona receiver that everybody liked after the one game yes yeah 313 whatever yards it's pretty good pretty good yeah it's good uh Kurt Coleman do we see Daron James in the Box as a linebacker a lot this game to help the interior line with run defense what are your thoughts there I I think I'll have to go back to the way Cody Alexander described the defense against Marvin Harrison Jr but I'd imagine he's he's got one role and that's Devonte Adams not one rle but I think that's that's the primary yeah the the Michigan against Marvin Harrison they had safety over the top the entire time against Marvin Harrison Jr so they did a pretty good job in that regard Ohio State still had some other guys that are also pretty good so yeah you know we'll see what happens there um I think we'll see Derwin play more as a true like safety in this game I think he one in the article that Daniel poer wrote about Derwin which is fantastic if you haven't written it you know one of the things that Jesse M has spoken about publicly and in the article is that they don't want Derwin to be doing so many different things in every single game so I think they're going to be a little bit more you know hyper specific and you know maybe in this matchup against the Raiders who have the tight ends maybe he's more involved that way too um but they're not going to have him like all over the place doing different kind of roles so I think we'll see him Blitz a few times a game that'll be consistent but I think we will see him be in one specific role for the majority of each game which I think uh like he said he just wants to be able to think less and play football and see ball hit ball and I think he's he's really excited about this defense and the opportunity to do that yeah um okay mighty wants to know who has the better run game on Sunday I the Chargers kind of have to with the investment in the offensive line like they better and will disly and I think the receivers can all block it should be the Chargers but yeah I mean I think the edge rushers can do enough to slow them down but Max Crosby can flat out take this charges rushing offense and kill it so we'll see yeah uh I think zamir white probably has like the better game of the running backs just because I think he's gonna get way more touches than the Chargers backs but I think the Chargers will Rush more yards maybe Justin Herbert gets in you know like a 20- yard scramble or something like that so I I think the Chargers would will win this rushing rushing matchup all right week one preview in the books love to see it so uh we appreciate each of you guys for tuning in um we are going to be bringing back the Saturday q&as so I I know a bunch of you had great points in the chat and some questions that we didn't get to touch on um Saturday is the time to do that we appreciate the super chats we will always touch on those um but on Saturday we are going to bring back the Q&A feature um hopefully the majority of the Saturdays will'll be able to do q&as but obviously depending on on schedules and and when Utah football plays and stuff like that um but for the most part we'll be back on Saturdays for q&as and then on Sunday since Tyler is going to the game we're going to be live after Sunday night football this week to recap the week one matchup so um Tyler any final thoughts before we head out I will not say Family Trust respect I will say I love you dead and I hope your team loses there you go there you go nice job nice job um can't wait to see it man uh long time coming for the Jim Harbaugh era I love the fact that he was in like the the uh shirt today the blue collar shirt that he gave everybody so just I think this team is just ready to run through a wall for Jim Harbaugh and I think we'll see that show up on Saturday should be a ton of fun I love that week one is the Raider game and it's just gonna be a great great matchup uh can't wait to see how folds all right guys that's gonna do it for us tonight we'll see you on Saturday morning or on Sunday night hopefully both but one of those times uh you should you should definitely come back back here and uh we appreciate you for tuning in uh this has been another episode of the guilty is charge podcast as always Bol up
