UCLA linebacker Kain Medrano talks Hawai’i heat and the defense’s performance in the win

defense really stepped up in the second half a bunch of guys made plays including yourself you only they only had 100 yards in the second half what what did you guys do differently from the first half um nothing you know we just we just came out and we knew we kind of just knew that um we had to lock in um defense and just kind of need more discipline and hone in on the details um of all of our defenses and coverages and um you know we were allowing too much on the Run game in the first half and that was kind of point of emphasis coming into the um locker room but I mean it kind of just went without being said that we just kind of need to step up as a defense because we knew what this teame was going to be K you had a great uh second half what said can you sure to us what was say the second half in the locker room that made you guys come out with more fire um you know there wasn't really nothing to say we just kind of knew what what kind of ball game was going to be um you know we um we came out here with um you know and we just knew that we had to rely on each other um we had to rely on everybody in that locker room um offense defense special teams um so we just kind of came in there and was like that's not our ball we need to go out there and play our ball and I think we did that seems like a lot of seems like a lot of guys going down with uh hand with um cramps and whatnot uh how hot was it out there like yeah it was a hot one um I haven't cramped that bad in a while that's how I'll say that um but it was it was a hot one and um thank you to our training staff and stuff for getting everybody through that and us all getting our healthy so yeah it was hot one go ahead describe what you guys did uh defensively on that last while dve uh yeah we just knew um we knew what how much time was on the clock and what they needed um they needed a field goal to go into tie the thing um they had below a minute um so we just knew that they were going to try and get out of bounds um and save the clock um that way and so we kind of just um knew knew that um as far as the all 11 of us and we kind of just executed we worked on that all week um and all fall about in the situ in the game situations like that and so it's it kind of finally came into play obviously want to win a game like that for yourself your school but did it go through your mind went for Coach Foster in his first game um of course we we kind of knew going into it that um we wanted to win this for him and we knew as soon as we won it that game ball was going to him um and without a doubt um you know this this locker room and and this team we all came together for him and um you know went through our pillars of discipline respect and enthusiasm and represent in what was it like celebrating afterward it's fun it fun we got to sing the fight song um he was right there in the middle you know it's just the the culture and the vibe and the energy is different in the wind you guys can hear the music right now um you know so this the vibe and the the energy that we got from all the players coaching staff including just on what do you think of your pass rush uh obviously it's a different look than last year but what' you think of the effectiveness of what you guys do we didn't get as many quarterback hits we wanted um but we got to him um and you saw like the first three or four hits he was kind of slow to get up um but as far as our pass R we just got to keep working um and we got to keep hugging plugging and playing and getting fresh legs out there every time because that's going to help us out a lot we got a lot of talented lot of talented linebackers and the line that can Rush the quarterback and so we just got to come together and just figure that out go thank you thank
