we are less than a week away from Kentucky football kicking off their 2024 season and I believe the Wildcats are criminally underrated heading into week one you are locked on Kentucky your daily podcast on the Kentucky Wildcats part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day all right what's going on Big Blue Nation welcome on into locked on Kentucky your daily Kentucky Wildcats podcast I'm your host Lance Dawn on today's episode of Locked on Kentucky we are going to be discussing Kentucky football heading into their week one matchup with the Southern Miss Eagles going to be breaking down why I believe the wild cats are criminally underrated heading into this year's week one matchup also on today's episode Jasper Johnson has announced a commitment date going to be talking about why I believe the wild cats are going to end getting him I know it's a little bit further out than we anticipated but it's not that long of a wait in the end and then to wrap up the show I want to take a look at ESPN's fpi not in basketball but in football I want to take a look at this Kentucky football schedule again I I just think that the media has a lot wrong when looking at this Kentucky football team thank you so much for making lock on Kentucky your first listen every single day I want to remind everyone out there that we are free and available on all platforms and if you are watching on YouTube I would greatly appreciate it if you subscribe to the show and if you were listening on podcast I would also appreciate it if you subscribe there as well today's episode is brought to you by ultimate GM ultimate college football head coach is a brand new mobile game that is completely free has no ads and is 100% playable offline you can use promo code locked on CFB all caps inside the game store to receive a free boost to your program begin your coaching Legacy today again download the app use promo code locked on CFB all those letters in all caps start your coaching Legacy today you could start with the Kentucky Wildcats today as I have all right let's go ahead and get into it I believe that Kentucky football is way way way better than people currently think ESPN's FBI has some strong negative thoughts on the wild cats which we'll get to later on here in the show but I think Kentucky is going to end up making a push for the 12 team college football playoff this upcoming season in case you didn't know in case you're coming right back to college football here is as it starts the playoff field has expanded from four teams to 12 this year also Texas and Oklahoma joining the SEC Wildcats traveling to take on the Longhorns I believe in mid November we're going to break down the schedule later on in the show but just from a roster standpoint from a starting rotation on both sides of the ball I think ky's a lot better than people give them credit for and I want to go through here and kind of break down these individuals but just on the top here at the beginning of the show let's not let's not beat around the bush Mark per excuse me not Mark Mark Stoops has done essentially the best he could have possibly done developing the talent that He has recruited up until this point now have there been some valleys yes have there been some low points absolutely but when it comes to getting the most out of his program getting the most out of his resources and getting him the most out of his recruiting there are few that have done better than Stoops has this may be one of the most talented rosters just on paper that stops has ever brought in now a lot of that has to do with the transfer portal you've brought you've brought in some pieces one of which we'll talk about here in literally just a second that are going to make your program better but have maybe a higher star rating than you're normally accustomed to picking up and again a lot of that has to do with the fact that you just are able to go get players from different spots in the transfer portal whether that be in the SEC whether it be other high-profile places ky's gotten pieces from Ohio State USC georia a lot of different really solid recruits at really solid programs coming to play for the cats you're more experienced you are more talented and you have largely retained most of your coaching staff Brad white needing to pick it up here needing to kind of take a step forward on that side of the ball there's a lot of reason to believe why the wild cats will be better at essentially all three levels but let's start here ky's better than people think we'll start here with the quarterback in case you don't know him Brock Vander G former five-star Prospect played at Georgia for a couple of Seasons never was able to see any meaningful playing time as he was the backup or the third string quarterback for most of his time in Athens former top 20 player nationally again five-star kid tall strong confident player he's going to fit right in when it comes to what Kentucky wants to do on the on offense they want to run the ball they want to be physical and they want to take shots downfield they play with a pro style off offense Vandergriff is absolutely perfect for that obviously Ohio State running back chip trainum out for the first few weeks of the season so Kentucky going to have to do a little bit of mixing and matching at the running back position I'm actually kind of excited to see more of Demi Su Sumo K uh I think that he is going to be fun in more in a higher volume setting uh Sumo car last year averaged seven yards per carry transfer from NC State he's also a very solid receiving back as well caught a nice touchdown pass against Mississippi State uh in 2023 but he was used sparingly I think if you're able to get him on the on the field just a little bit more often get him some more touches maybe those yards per carry maybe those receiving yards they take a little bit of a dip in terms of averages but I think his volume uh on a whole on the whole is going to be very very solid for the first few weeks of the Season maybe kuy's running game not as consistent as you wanted to be with trainum out but I think that Sumo K is going to be able to fill in just fine this receiving core is quietly one of the best receiving cores not in the SEC but in America I think that Baran Brown is the fastest wide receiver in America hands down I don't think a lot of people would be disagreeing with that last season took a little bit of a dip receiving yards wise he had 628 yards in his first season 539 in a sophomore year four touchdowns a piece receiving in both of those years but last year he had 147 yards rushing in a touchdown so he had more yards from scrimmage and then also those three kickoff return touchdowns as well he's fast he's tall he is exactly what Kentucky wants to to pair with a guy like Brock Vandergriff maybe even somebody like Sumo Kay who can be a receiving threat out of the back field just those three alone are going to be really really fun Dane key improved statistically from his his freshman year he's got over 500 receiving yards in both of his two seasons with the cats I think in year three he's going to be able to put up similar production just a solid consistent guy out there jamori m mcklin excuse not mlan mlin jamori mcklin somebody that we've not talked about at all here on the show up until the start of the season now North Texas transfer who who had over a thousand yards receiving last year with his time in with the mean green 11 receiving touchdowns so you've got the fast receiver in America you had a guy that had over 600 yards receiving a season ago as your number two option and then your third guy jamori mcklin over 1,000 yards at his previous School you've got three guys right there that are all going to be really solid receivers at the very least solid there is a high floor with this receiving core I think they're going to do very special things with Vandergriff again former five-star talent and then you start to work your way further down this offensive rotation won't spend too much time going through here but you have two very experienced TI tight ends and Jordan Dingle and Josh ctis you have three seniors starting on your offensive line one of the other players is a junior one of the other players is a sophomore joerger Burton being a junior Jaylen farmer the Florida transfer a 6'5 314b guard you've got guys on your offensive line you've got a lot to be excited about in terms of returning production if your quarterback position works out this should be maybe not in terms of stats but in terms of just Raw Talent on paper this should be one of the better offenses in the SEC I really think they're going to be able to take a step forward and that's after taking a step forward a year ago with guys like Devon ly who were just a little too inconsistent at times I think Vander Vandergriff is going to be a little bit more under control will he be as flashy I'm not sure but this offense is going to do two things they're going to run the ball they're going to be physical even in the passing game they got three physical white outs that I think that they can work with so the offense I think is great let's continue to talk about this here we'll talk about the defense it is one of the most experienced uh defenses in America I'm very excited about it and then we'll kind of dive into this schedule I'm not going to give official predictions today but I think that there are some very clear things that again the media just continue to get wrong about this Wildcat Squad before we dive into that I want to tell you guys about our friends over at ultimate college football want to take a moment to give you guys a heads up on a brand new mobile game that I think you're going to love just as much as I do ultimate college football head coach in this amazing game in simulation you get to step into the shoes of a head coach and lead your college football program to Glory can you actually imagine of maybe taking Mark Stoops out and stepping in as the head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats in the Sim I've had just a blast with it you've been able to recruit players you can hire own coaching staff you can oversee training camps you can handle school scholarships you can control every single Cru cral detail of your program it's all in your hands and I I'm here to tell you have somebody who's been playing this for the last few weeks it is really impressive just how detailed you can get with the decision- making with the hiring of your staff you can you can have different things for different salaries you can have different kinds of styles of play with your offense you can actually call your own plays on offense during games which is really fun so you can kind of have your own offensive system it's all very Niche and very detailed all the way down to just the minute things I have loved that I love the simulation game it's been super super fun it's probably the best one that I played on the market so far it is incredible just a great time to kind of sit back and enjoy a mobile game which is something I don't often do but whenever I do go to pick up my phone I'm picking up ultimate college football head coach which is completely free has no ads 100% playable offline you can play on the go inside the game store to receive a free boost to your program make sure to take advantage of this perk as it will get your team off to a strong start it certainly helped mine as I was trying to build Kentucky football further to Glory download the game just visit visit [Music] look it up in the App Stores again little bit of a diff different background we are kind of breaking things down here there is going to be a big change to the way the show looks here in about a week and a half I'm super excited about it I teased this throughout the summer looking forward to showing you guys what we've got coming up I think it's going to look great make sure you subscribed if you are not already to be able to see that here soon and if you have any questions for the show anything about Kentucky football Kentucky basketball just leave in the comments below and I'll do my best to answer it here on the show okay so we've talked about the offense I think it is it is criminally underrated because Kentucky in case you haven't been in case you haven't seen is not projected to do a whole lot in the SEC this upcoming season and we'll we'll get to what the uh the ESPN FBI has to say about it we'll actually talk in a minute about what locked on uh SEC host Chris Gordy has to say about the wild cats this season but let's get continue to work work our way through this roster again the starting lineups on both sides of the ball is is way better than some of these projections these win loss projections that people have out there for UK Derek Jackson 89 tackles last year JJ Weaver sixth season with the Kentucky Wildcats pop Dumis Johnson a Georgia transfer had 70 tackles in 2022 ky's linebacker Corp is going to be super super good then you also have the defensive line which I think is going to be excellent as well Octavius oxendine going to be down there Dion Walker who's projected to be a top 10 pick in the NFL draft this upcoming season you also have all of these different experienced guys in this secondary as you work your way further down Alex Safari 49 tackles a season ago Maxwell Harriston 68 tackles a season ago Zion childis is a senior jaku Hardaway is a junior after getting a little bit of time as the sophomore he's stepping into a full-time role as a junior all of these players here extremely experienced they know what they're doing they can really bring a lot to the table it's going to be an imp an improved defense I expect it to be at least on the back end I think Kentucky has struggled the last couple of seasons in terms of pass in terms of pass defense I think they're going to get a little bit better this year also can't forget about the nose guard kesan silver the former five-star who transferred in from North Carolina uh a season ago so you've got also Travon Ripka as well on the defensive line tyer Furby who uh had some time last year Jordan love it who played a decent amount at safety last year for the cats Christian story who was previously at Alabama didn't get a ton of time with the Crimson tie but still a talented player he's going to be at safety as well DJ Waller ner Addison you've got guys you've got dudes you've got experience guys that have been here before and then of course Alex rer at kicker you've got a junior or excuse me a sophomore at punter and Wilson Barry who was great last year and of course your special teams um my assumption is deori mlin Baran Brown um those are probably going to be your two kickoff return I would assume it's brown um Sumo K Bay as well from running from the running back spot Kentucky's good top to bottom their starting lineup is good how is the depth for this team I think that's the major question but I think there are a lot of teams that are frankly I think below Kentucky or on the same playing field as Kentucky that don't have as much depth or even close to as much depth as the Wildcats do and the Wildcats are not even one of the deeper teams in the SEC I would say and we'll look at the ESP and FBI in a minute but goodness gracious I don't understand how Kentucky could be ranked so low in projected SEC standings and be this good in their starting rotation want to look here at a second for a second at SEC Power Rankings or just SEC rankings period from Chris Gordy the host of locks on SEC he has Vanderbilt 16th in the com conference Mississippi State 15th South Carolina 14th Arkansas 13th okay all those make sense probably going to be the B worst four teams in the in in the League this year Florida at 12 okay fine there are some other teams that you could have here at 11 Auburn I think is the Clear Choice I think Texas A&M may take a step step back Kentucky though at 11 and it's not egregious right like they're over Florida like if they were underneath Florida I would be I would be like hard no Kentucky a better football team than Florida this year schedule or not but they're underneath Auburn as well which we'll we'll get to them in a minute I got something to say about them Kentucky at 11th out of 16 teams I think that on paper this roster is much more talented than that and when you look at their schedule I think that there are some wins that Kentucky is going to pick up this year that a lot of of people out there don't think they even have a chance in I'm going to predict some upsets going to predict some upsets here but 11th I think is just I I think Kentucky is closer to the top half if not in the top half of the SEC first year of expansion no divisions which by the way in case you don't know also no divisions in the SEC this year so we're not looking at the SEC East and West we're looking at just the SEC as a whole Kentucky I think is closer to eighth I think I think that's where the wild cats will end up lying and I know that teams like Oklahoma teams like Tennessee like they're they're going to be projected to be good but I think ky's in that realm I think Kentucky is in that tier so actually instead of instead of going to Jasper next I do want to just go ahead and look at the ESPN fbii so in case you don't know ESPN does this football power index every single season right where they kind of they kind of break down from their computer model you know ranking these teams obviously their win loss projections their percentage chance to go undefeated percentage chance to get to six wins to win their division to win their conference to win their play percentage of chance to make the playoffs to make the national title to win the national title and if I'm not mistaken the actual fbii like the number attached to the the football power index is like how much that team would be favored against the average team in college football like how many points would ESPN's analytics like project them to win by and it's weird because there are some teams that are ranked like really high that you wouldn't think would be ranked that high like for instance Kansas is ranked 17th Clemson is ranked 14th don't know about that don't know if I'd have them over a team like Kansas state who's only ranked 22nd Auburn and Florida are ranked 19th and 20th I just I just think that's is flat out wrong USC is ranked 18th they'd be favored apparently by 11 over the average FBS team I don't know about that with the way that they they play defense all the way down at number 34 though behind teams like South Carolina SMU TCU Oklahoma State NC state are the Kentucky Wild Cats projected to go in even six and six now the win loss record according to ESPN FBI kind of fluctuates they don't give like hard numbers for in for instance if you look at a team like let's just pick LSU here for for instance their projected win losses 7.9 wins 4.2 losses because some of the games are kind of too close to call even though the analytics kind of favor one team over another it may be like a tight projection which we'll get to all the projections for ky's games here 34th is too low behind South Carolina is hilar arious behind a team like SMU is also kind of entertaining as well it's not a huge gap like Kentucky is 6.2 points better than the average college football team which I think they're more close to N9 or 10 but again that's just me Kentucky only has a 61% chance to get to six wins they have a 2% chance to win their conference they have a 4.3% chance to make the playoffs 3% chance to make the national title and .1% chance to win the national championship again the 34th best team in America I disagree I think I think that ky's better than that and when you look at their schedule I think you'll start to see more wins than you would normally expect again not an official prediction today well let's just look let's just look here Southern Miss to open in the a going to have a preview later on this week I think Kentucky wins that game I don't think a lot of people think they lose that game even with t Tate raker coming in from Florida State at quarterback not happening South Carolina you get him at home sure Kentucky could lose that game I think they're going to win ESPN gives Kentucky a 55.9% chance to win that game fact that that that it's that close shocks me then you play at home against Georgia let's call it a loss for now let's call it a loss two- one only a 12% chance to win that game then you play Ohio you should win this is where things get interesting for me the middle of your slate essentially from late September to late October at Old Miss do you guys remember what happened the last time the wild cats came to Oxford they shot themselves in the foot three or four times and gave the game away to a good old Miss team Kentucky has the opportunity to go in and kind of spring a trap on Miss I think that this is a trap game for the Miss Rebels Miss starts the season off light Ferman Middle Tennessee at Wake Forest Georgia Southern before their first conf game is not until September 28th against Kentucky at 11:00 a.m. this game was at 11 last time it was in Oxford Miss is going to be good Miss is experienced Miss has a lot of transfer portal Talent as well I think that game is going to be way more competitive than people currently expect Kentucky has a 29 and a. half% chance to win that game I think it should be more close to 50/50 I think that Kentucky again on paper is better than people think that offense is going to move the ball against all Miss if you don't have as many turnovers Miss field goals and special teams problems you win that game last year or a couple years ago and you win that game this year I believe whether or not you do make mistakes those is yet to be determined Vanderbilt could possibly be your fifth win and then you go to Florida and and this is something else I don't understand Florida has a 65.9% chance to beat Kentucky according to ESPN's computer model did the model just forget that despite Kentucky being less talented for the last three years kuy's won three straight games in this rivalry three straight Florida hasn't won in Gainesville since 2019 okay Kentucky Kentucky should be favored and Kentucky this year is more talented just objectively they are a more talented team and if you want to say no they aren't Lance okay well let's run through it again five-star quarterback one of the best receiving cores in the SEC one of the most experienced offensive lines in the SEC multiple high profile picks or recruits on your defensive line one of them a former five-star one of them is projected to be a top 10 pick that's just two of them okay you've got one of the best linebacking cores in the SEC Derek Jackson coming back JJ Weaver transfer from G Georgia and pop uh pop Dumas you've got a an a retooling secondary I guess you could say kind of trying to figure some things out on the back end you've added some people as depth from the from the portal you've got some guys coming back there when they're freshman in sophomore year couple of seniors as well like I mentioned earlier guys like Harriston being really experienced guys like Zion Chris being very experienced Christian story transfer from Bama who's experienced you have reason to believe that this is a more talented team than Florida who right now by the way if we're just going to if we're just going to get on this train the Florida Gators are on a D in on a downward Trend and this schedule doesn't help and they have they have I think by far the the most difficult schedule in the country they aren't even in the top 25 in next year's recruiting rankings ky's like 25th or 26th I can't remember the specific but they're 25th or 26th Florida's in 30s the Gators at for for what they are as a program should never be there but they are they're not getting better Talent than Kentucky they're not winning on the field against Kentucky Kentucky's a better program they are a better football program than the Florida Gators I think Kentucky should win that one they should win that one wouldn't shock me if they lost but they should Auburn is at home for the wild cats this year now I'd hate to get clipped here but I have a feeling that's probably what's going to happen there's been a lot of online discussion recently about Kentucky and Auburn there have been some podcasts out there that have said made the observation Kentucky you know hasn't really been as good as Auburn essentially every time they've played and when Auburn has not been good the Tigers have still been able to get the victory Kentucky hasn't beaten Auburn since 09 yada yada y ksr responded to that clip that was put out and essentially said and screw that noise also you're buttoning your top button even though the name of the podcast is the top button like it's the point it's it's a bit on the show so I I'm not for calling out people's appearance like as part of my argument but I am part I am trying to be objective whenever I look at the games like this and kind of break down where these two programs are at if I'm not mistaken ksr and the Kentucky fan base online just as a whole made the observation hey you lost to New Mexico State last year Auburn you lost you didn't just lose you lost by 31 to 10 you lost by 21 points to New Mexico state that's bad that's really that's really really bad it doesn't matter how talented your roster is that's just a failed coaching job and as we've established established previously I think Mark stop is one of the better head coaches in this entire conference freeze has his high points he has his moments they almost beat Bama they almost beat Georgia and then you lost to New Mexico State he's more volatile I think than Stoops who has proven to be one of the most consistent coaches in the country period not just in football in any sport Auburn is not Auburn's brought in Talent this year they're going to have an improved receiving core their defense is going to be I think as good as last year and it was above average last year they don't have a better quarterback they just don't I would say kuy's receiving core right now is better for two reasons number one or more proven their production has been better and this is not a this is not a program that's known to throw the ball around in Kentucky I think Dane key Barry and brown and and Macklin are better then cam Coleman Perry Thompson Keandre Lambert Smith would have you second thing I think that will will be proven to back this up is Payton Thorne ready to take that next step in his fifth year of college football and go out there and sling The Rock more effectively than it did last season because there were games where Auburn was routinely underneath 200 150 100 passing yards per game and yes the defense was able to keep them in it but they you also lost some pieces in your secondary how good are you going to be at defending the pass this year if you're Auburn how good are you going to be against teams like Kentucky who have speed and athleticism at that position former five-star QB that yes is unproven but also I think just on paper if we're comparing Talent do you want the three star that played at Michigan State or do you want the five star that played at Georgia I think a lot of people would take Vandergriff in this instance I think a lot of Auburn fans would take Vandergriff over Thorn right now would he be the most per perfect system fit we can argue that another day no but I think he's a more taled player on paper I think Kentucky should be Auburn because it's in Lexington if it was in Auburn it'd be more difficult would Kentucky losing this game Shock Me No but I would favor I would favor the wild cats I think it would be an extremely competitive game on a neutral site I don't think there's any reason to go back in the back and forth and be like oh well you suck and even when we've sucked you've never beaten us and like oh your your button looks stupid and also we're better than that you lost to New Mexico State what my whole here's my whole thing for the Auburn fans that want to simul simultaneously make the point that Kentucky hasn't beaten Auburn since 09 even when Auburn is stunk they've been better while also saying please don't don't bring up New mexico State that's a previous season we're a completely different team now but also you've not beaten us since 2009 so you won't beat us this year there there's an inconsistency with the logic my whole take is this year on paper both these teams are very very comparable in terms of Outlook this being in Lexington makes it a much more competitive game on for the wild cats that's just my take Tennessee on the road should be a loss talk about a team that is more talented than both Auburn and Kentucky with that being in Knoxville that's going to be rough Murray State should be a win Texas should be a loss and then Louisville at home should be a win there's eight wins right there Southern Miss South Carolina Ohio ol Miss Vanderbilt Florida Auburn Murray State and Louisville actually that may be that may be nine I might have miscounted if you include the game so 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 and if you add the Miss game it's ninth excuse me that was going to be my whole point that's what I had written down my my Google doc I just tabed out of it if you get the Miss win if you pull that upset at 9 and three you could very well M make make the college football playoff you could absolutely do you'd be right there on the cusp at 9 and three with losses to George Tennessee and Texas and then a road Victory against al Miss who should still be very good we'll get you my official predictions later on this week I think ky's being undervalued and the final thing I want to say here that's kind of like a negative thing is David hail wrote an article uh just a few days ago putting college football's 134 FBS teams into tears dude's a hater um he put Kentucky in the eighth tier and then said all Kentucky needs to do is just be good until mid October to help Kentucky fans forget Mark popes the head coach like that's just that's just rude Pope's better than that all right to wrap up the show I want to take a look at Jasper Johnson he has scheduled an official visit uh today's episode running a little have not subscribed please go ahead and do so Jasper Johnson we've been talking about him a lot on the show as of late he has announced a commitment date finally we're going to get to know when Jasper is going to commit hopefully to the Kentucky Wildcats September 5th Thursday September 5th so we've got about a week and a half to wait here and we would have expected this to happen this week but it's okay I think at the end of the day the fact that Jasper is not waiting months or M waiting multiple weeks letting some other teams maybe get back into this recruitment I think is great final five teams according to the announcement by Jasper ksr multiple sources his final five teams Alabama Arkansas Kentucky Louisville and North Carolina Johnson raid is the number 11 overall Prospect in the country we' talked about him a lot on the show instate player going to play for OT Elite his final Collegiate SE or excuse me High School season I'm I need to note playing in Atlanta actually with another Kentucky Prospect in Tay Kenny at OT but he's a he's a Lexington kid he's from the area and as of right now according to on Three's recruiting prediction machine Kentucky holds an 84.9% chance to land him they have jumped up after a couple of crystal balls projected Kentucky to go or excuse me for Jasper to commit to the cats there have been a couple from on three there's been a couple from 247 people believe that ky's going to get this kid one of the best volume scores in the high school class confident three-point shooter crafty in the mid-range excellent around the rim knows how to gets to his spots and shoot at 6'4 he's a lengthier guard I would play him exclusively off ball and let a point guard get him his touches I think he's excellent excellent excellent at scoring The Rock his defense is a little bit of a question but the wild cats have put themselves in great position to land him extremely talented guy that I think think would pair well actually with four star Center Malachi Marino who is committed to the cats ksr back in July had the opportunity to kind of get his thoughts Jasper's thoughts on all five schools recruiting him he talked well about Alabama and the guard position how free that offense is how encouraging they are to take threes they were the first Power five school to offer Johnson so they've been relation building a relationship for a while North Carolina he talked about how solid their program was was growing up watching basketball said that there were a lot of great players that he noticed come through the program they want him to be their first commit that's what he's hearing from them and then from Kentucky direct quote here coach Mark Pope is always pitching me that he wants to hang a banner so coming in and making a big impact from day one he's telling me he wants to come in and have a big role on their team hearing that is good I like the difference I like the difference in in tone there from Johnson he talks about how good the Alabama programs are at developing and allowing Johnson to show showcase his talents Kentucky able to do a similar thing providing a large role talks about how good Carolina's been in the past at just cranking out solid Talent OR Elite Talent Kentucky first thing the coaches are telling me that they want me to come bring a national title just further emphasizes that Pope understands
