Rhys dobbler has lived in the northern Geelong suburb of nor Lane since 2016. it's been a tough few years the mother of two has been relying on the salvos for basic Staples to feed her family her struggles are not uncommon we've seen a real steady increase in people coming looking for assistance that's because officially norlane is Victoria's most disadvantaged area a lack of a job lack of a means of getting a better education lack of time to be able to do all of those things those deficiencies are backed up by fresh census data that shows unemployment in norlane is double the state average while the median household income per week is almost half a third of those households are single parent families while the suburb also experiences High rates of people who say they live with a mental health condition these social and economic disadvantages are having a detrimental impact on New Orleans youth around 16 percent of students drop out of school before they complete year nine norlane has always been a blue collar area of Geelong but worked right up when manufacturing jobs started to disappear in the 80s and the area still Bears the scars of those job losses today but the community isn't standing still local groups and social Enterprises are working hard to raise living standards by improving education and increasing access to jobs we need to be working at levels working with parents and families and elderly but also really working with children and with us inside schools as well locals say what Norway needs the most is an injection of investments from government and the private sector it's something that is going to take probably a generation to change a change that Rhys dobbler is hoping will come eventually there is always hope Harrison Tippett ABC News Geelong
