in 1974 that the Panthers and hornets met for the very first time and nobody could have envisioned what this game has become the Hornets have won nine consecutive games in the series since a 1414 tie in the 2014 season but the Panthers aim tonight to stop the streak and take home county bragging rids for the next 365 days I'm Jim Gardner joined tonight by Terry Benham ason Mertens and Dio venucci only of Benton football history but two icons in our community as uh in the last year we have lost our number one fan Freddy Reinhardt who passed away back in h February and just a few weeks ago on the passing of Jim Landers of course everybody knows Freddy the most recognizable first name in Benton whether you saw him at the courthouse uh Burger Shack his favorite place to eat or at the field on Friday night you can see in the video replay tonight A a picture of Freddy with his Donnie Burks award last year uh taken right up here in the Press Box and also a big hug to Brad Harris on the night he won his 100th game a couple cou years ago at Cersei but also Jim Landers for 18 years he was the voice of the Panthers and Jim was the man who carried Freddy for 18 years on road trips and home games and could could uh could call it like no other he literally called it like he saw it and uh I can remember when uh kwi first began to stream the broadcast we were living in California and Jim would talk often about landmarks and Bon and it just made me miss home so Jim Landers and Freddy Reinhardt two Irreplaceable men that we're going to miss and dedicate our broadcast all year long to these guys Terry absolutely and and how lucky were we to spend so many years with both of those guys and and be broadcasting do from the gym Landers Booth every Friday night when we're at home yeah well and you know years ago I think the first time I I ever worked in a broadcast or did anything I I used to do some stats uh for for Jim Landers and my father-in-law so uh I actually got to do some work with Jim and then of course working the sidelines with Freddy uh for a couple of years there before I came up in the booth was always a treat and you know it was it was bittersweet as I prepared to come here tonight because uh you know something I could always count on was walking in the booth up here and getting to talk to Freddy and getting to get getting the question about what do I think about the Hogs this year what do you think the Razorbacks are going to do so almost a yearly tradition it definitely was so definitely going to be missed bred Harris gifted Freddy a number 70 Jersey on his 70th birthday and this year no Benton Panther will wear number 70 pretty pretty fitting tribute yeah two weeks from tonight at the home opener you'll want to notice the brand new sign on the home side of the indoor complex a permanent tribute to Freddy at the palace his very favorite place so um I think the world would be a better place if we were all a little more like Freddy and Jun so all right it's time for salt Bowl football and uh this is the gold standard as they're calling it the 50th year since Benton and Bryant first played however it is the 52nd time these two schools have met all making Bry the third most off and played opponent behind Catholic and Russellville very first game in 74 the Panthers won 28 to nothing Bryant courtesy of their win last year now leads the series 2524 and two and the Hornets have won nine straight the last Panther win in the series came in the 2005 playoffs a 3528 win so it's been awful lopsided in Bryant's fa for low these 24 some odd years Terry well it really has and uh you know when I was at high school at Benton it was just the opposite and uh that my senior year is when it kind of started to turn and it has a lot to do with population and you know deal we were looking at the rosters earlier tonight and it was a little lopsided on numbers of players uh on those rosters in the program uh at the salt B and anytime you have that many more players you're going to find four or five Doo that can get on the field well it's always about depth I mean you saw last year Benton was able to hang with Bryant for a for a full half I mean we played Bryant a really close game uh but the depth really shows up in the second half and um you know anyway always always been a good season but we need it to we need it to get a little bit closer a little bit tighter so these games are a little bit more uh I don't know a little bit more passion involved that game was actually 14 to six going into the fourth quarter yeah and Bryant threw their Superior depth kind of kick the door in in that fourth quarter last year see if Panthers can reverse that this year when you look at both teams they're coming off impressive Seasons both bent and Bryant went 10- two last year both were Conference champions Panthers are returning 15 starters the Hornets 16 starters Brad Harris begins his ninth year as the head coach of the Panthers with 68 wins that puts him 15 wins behind Dwight fight for the alltime winds leader uh with the uh bitten High School Panthers are picked to win the 6A East their's second overall behind Greenwood in the 68 seventh overall in the Statewide pole CAD Sanders begins his second year at Bryant the Hornets are picked to win the 7A Central second in 7A and third overall so we got a top 10 match up Bryant third been seven tonight Terry yeah and you know Briant returned 16 starters too um seven on offense nine on defense uh it it's setting up to be another really good football game as Jim stated Doo they kind of kicked the door open and left a a bad impression at the end of the game with 35-6 or 3 5 to 6 35 to7 score and uh but all of that really happened in the fourth quarter going into that fourth quarter this was a very close football game and I expect it to be another really good game well and don't forget last year Drew Davis didn't start this game uh really only came in in relief and you know was it was a sophomore um with with zero game experience at that time and so now you know 3500 yards and 42 touchdowns and you you know 72% completions uh 72% completion ratio later uh our offense is going to look completely different last year we were heavily dependent on brillan Russell uh you remember he didn't come back after halftime he was he was hurt um and that's really what the difference was we couldn't move the ball we couldn't keep the ball away from Brian in the second half and we couldn't control the clock yeah Panther offense going to be led by Drew Davis the Junior quarterback as Doo mentioned 72 completion percentage 3,000 yds 42 touchdowns to just two interceptions madx Davis and Elias Payne are back they combined for 110 catches for just shy of 2,000 yards and 27 touchdowns and up front Parker glaze Isaiah Gibson and Daniel Jordan are three anchors on that offensive line defensively Walter Hicks moves from strong side linebacker to the middle he led the team last year with 104 tackles 11 sacks 20 tackles for loss and scored two defensive touchdowns Jay Thomas pepper and Isaac Hill the spur and the Bandit uh 180 tackles combined five interceptions and the bookends at defensive end Owen seals and Tai Matia 60 tackles six sacks and five quarterback hurries we're going to take our first break and when we come back we'll hear Brad Harris's preview of Landers and Freddy Reinhardt and I know losing your number one fan back in the spring is going to be uh different down there on the sideline well it'll be totally different down there this year you know he wasn't able to come as much last year but we knew he was there with us you know uh this year it's going to be a little different you know not seeing him uh I got sent a picture this week you know I think I shared it with you but uh after one of our big wins where Freddy just give you the big bear hug you know you're going to miss that him being a part of it or him being being able to come in before the games and talk to the guys you know usually uh he's here by about 4:00 on game day and uh you know we're going to miss in his face walk in the door and and uh not having him on the sideline it's it's going to be a huge void for us so you got some guys that are leaders that maybe can pick up that slack and encourage uh encourage the boys we hope so we hope we got some our senior class is pretty quiet though you know as far as being vocal leaders they're they're good leaders on the field and everything but they're pretty quiet guys uh but but there's some guys that have kind of stepped up this year and all that and uh you know we got some different coaches and and we've actually had a couple of different people in the community have come in and want to talk to the team a little bit so uh you know it's it's definitely going to be be different not having Freddy around uh you know we're going to miss him a lot so and then Jim Landers uh you know didn't know him quite as well as I did Freddy but I know he's an icon in bent football you know with being an announcer in our community and everything so two two big time Panther legends that we're going to be missing this season I know it's been a bit of a different fall camp for you because you've got 15 starters back and you've been able to install quicker and uh that so uh how did PA Camp go and how do you feel about the team going into the opener tonight well this is one of the first years that we've had where we we know who our quarterbacks you know going into the season since probably Garrett Brown in in 2020 you know and uh you know we kind of always had a little bit of a quarterback battle going in so we were able to focus on offense just a little bit more and and maybe game plan just a little bit to of our quarterback and uh our offense having eight guys back uh so that's that's been a little different offensively defensively hasn't changed just a whole lot you know uh we've got base form you know base stunts Blitz coverage stuff that we've tweaked and one thing that that we were able to do a little bit we feel a little bit more confident in our secondary this year than what we did last year going in the season so that's been good been a little bit more man Concepts or combo com Concepts and on the back end of our defense and we hope that that that's going to be one of our strengths this year uh you know Miss uh you know Gary R out and some of those guys last year but we got a Marcus back and then we had a really good move in and Trey Stewart come in and he's really going to help us a lot having pepper and Isaac Hill back there after their second and third year starter that's that's very beneficial to us so we've added a little bit different stuff coverage wise uh which a little bit more advanced than what we've been probably going in salt bow before let's talk about the Frenemies friends 364 days a year enemies for one but uh you know Bry this year looks a little different to me uh but there are some similarities and what stands out is that defensive line they just roll in fresh bodies up there it looks like that's going to be the strength of their defense tonight yeah 100% Jim I mean they they're really good up front on defense uh it's amazing to me that they can get seven eight guys that the quality that they have it's not not much drop off at all you know if we rotate through you know four or five guys we feel like we drop off a little bit these guys they they coell change you know they'll put a new line shift almost like a hockey switch you know but uh but man they're good up front on the D line their DBS uh that's always been the strength of their team I don't know they have quite as much depth there but they've got some good players back there uh they've typically wore you down on the back end of the defense and then up front you know so uh but that defensive line they're going to be they're going to be tough tonight it's going to be a huge challenge for our offensive line and uh you know I know our guys are going to be ready for it it's just can we handle the the Relentless in inity and pressure that they're going to bring for us on the other side of the ball they're going to run three running backs at you they've got a Notre Dame commit that didn't even start their scrimmage so looks to me like stopping the run's going to be a key it is they've got three running backs Jim that could go to any school in the state of Arkansas start you know if one of them was here he'd be a starting running back you know I mean that that's how good they are they've got two seniors and and thrash and Anderson that are really good and then Curtis Jones the a junior you know and all three of those are college football players like you mentioned Anderson he's committed to Notre Dame and then thrash is committed to OBU and Curtis Jones will play college football somewhere so they've got three really good ones uh that we're going to have to do a good job of tackling all night you know and early on in a SE in a year sometimes that's tough against good running backs because you haven't seen that full speed last week seeing a really good running back at L Rock Christian I think we got better as the half went on with those guys so I think that's going to be a huge key you know for our defense I really feel like going to try to run the football more and Jordan Walker is another running back back there big body quarterback you know so so they got four guys that they're going to run at us and and probably try to wear us down feels like a line of scrimmage game to me with their running attack and and the ability to protect Drew and let him get the ball out to such a talented group of of wide receivers yeah definitely it's going to be can we hold up to their defensive front and then well our how's our defensive box play going to handle their run game you know and they're they're breaking in three new offensive some linemen they're they're two guards in the center uh you know but they got two tackles back and their left tackle Terry he's he's really good uh you know so it's going to be how how do we handle that and we feel like that's one of our strengths uh we've got we feel good about six of our defensive lineman rolling them through in a two deep right now and then our linebacking core we got two seniors and Hicks and right that are seniors that that have have been through the battles a little bit and uh you're going to see Monson as a linebacker sophomore getting his T first taste of a salt bow uh we really like that group uh Jack Johnson's going to be rolling in there but uh we feel like we'll be able to hold up against the Run uh question can we can we do a good job tackling those three really good running backs because they're going to get a fresh body in there every time it's not like we're going to wear them down uh can we hold up to the pressure that they're going to apply to us coach streaks are made to be broken and uh good luck breaking a a hornet streak tonight well it's been a long time you know I've been messing with the guys I said most of you guys you guys were not even alive the last time the B Panthers won game game you know and uh it's time for that streak to end and and we got a great group of seniors that believe they got a chance to win you know they've lost very few football games in their career and uh they they they got a little chip on their shoulder of getting eliminated in the semis the last couple years and you know our goal is to to play in the Bucky on the field going to be a coin toss and we're just moments away from some good high school football what we're going to see when we finally get rolling here in a second is a a bit offense that was the most prolific in school history last year scoring 50.3 points per game The Hornet offense went for 44.3 so two highflying offenses last year and two defenses that were uh very impressive Benton gave up 20.8 points per game the Hornets 23.3 bent will operated out of a 33 stack the Hornets out of a 43 Scheme tonight and Dio one of the things you know you're kind of our defensive coordinator up here on the broadcast and really watching Bryant they they don't tend to do a lot to disguise I mean they kind of go left right they don't go weak strong their Corners safeties uh they just try to beat you with the with Talent well that that's exactly what I was going to say Jim you don't have to do a lot when you've got a lot of talent and you know Bryant's been led by a really strong defensive line for years I mean you you you could probably go three deep on the Bryant defensive line and those kids could have started for almost any other 7A school for the past couple years and you know we'll get to it eventually but one of my defensive keys to Victory is you know win the win the battle up front and that's exactly why Bryant's linebackers get to run free and Bryant has always had some really good rangy linebackers their defensive line uh prevents the offensive lineman for getting to the from getting to the second level and those linebackers are able to run around and make plays this week in B Panther Sports JV won at PL Academy on Monday 2718 last night in junior high football the eighth graders lost to PA 3813 The Freshman won in a game that was shortened due to injury and I'm happy to report for those of you that read that game story on bpanther foot.com the young man from palaski Academy was released from children's hospital today uh clean bill of health after what looked to be a scary spinal injury so he is going to is okay going to make a full recovery and we're uh very grateful to share that Benton jior High won 3528 and how about the lady Panther volleyballers coach she's got the uh train rolling already 3 over Conway and the Battle of btown last night the lady Panthers won it 3-2 over the lady Hornets yeah that was a big deal the the the jungle turned out in full force to show their support and uh came away with a big big win for the volleyball team man they just they just turn it on every year don't they well they reload yeah they they reload they're they're pretty fun to watch so back to back to back perhaps it's a great start to the season beating Conway and Bryant playing up in classification this week in the conference in addition to the Salt ball game here Marian is at win in a big rivalry game way has made the Trek to Jonesboro Little Rock Christian is down in Union County to play eldera Catholic is at Texar Canada that's a good match up to open the season West Memphis is at Hot Springs silven Hills is at Mill and whiteall at Sheridan Doo woo in a big matchup that's supposed to be a good game standing room only yeah down there in your old stomping grounds yeah that is uh yeah my brother's been talking about it all week we've been texted back and forth he's been added to Kevin Kelly's staff so we got a venucci on the coaching staff down there now so that'll make this year's game between the Panthers the the venucci family will H probably have some rockus texting battle of Highway 35 just got turned up a ni yeah did yeah so uh that's uh former Bryant head coach Daryl Patton and former PA head coach Kevin Kelly down there in Seline County tonight at the pit Glen Rose at boxside boy talking about dusting off old rivalries yeah there as the beavers and miners go at it and the Clinton Yellow Jackets are at Red Parker field to play Harmony Grove as they open the season all right as the Panthers come onto the field we're going to go down to KAS for the first time tonight uh KAS give us an energy inside the stadium whoa whoa let's go we're down hey I'm excited about the soft bow glad to be here with the boys I'm not going to say I'm more excited about bies but I am almost just excited about that those brisket tacos fire me up every time so so K straight to the buy menu how about straight to your Westside Wellness pick the click come on come on well I I think it's going to be an intense game but uh I think the what's going to happen is we're going to need to be able to run the football tonight and so I think Drew is going to have a phenomenal game where we can't throw every day and we're going to have some third and shorts that we're going to need to run so I'm going Luther Tucker new got a B on offensive side and then on defensive side I'm going Nick Wright playing uh weak side linebacker I think they're going to send him on the edge kind of frustrate the quarterback a little bit bring some pressure I think Nick's having a big night Terry yeah I went with Maddox Davis I agree I think they're going to move him around use him in a lot of different situations and then I went with Isaac Kel who had a huge year just from out of nowhere last year I expect to see him down in the Box a lot and helping out uh on the line of scrimmage Doo well with Drew Davis off the board I went with the the you know the kind of the next lightning bolt on offense Elias Payne uh now given madx Davis was the leading scorer last year aside from brayan Russell but y uh I expect Elias to get the ball in his hands and he's always electric when he does and then on defense give me Walter Hicks in that middle linebacker position just he's always near the ball Walter Hicks has a nose for it so hoping he has a big game and our final Westside Wellness pick to click tonight our man Freddy would always say when I would call him say who do you want he said give me my quarterback that's right I want my quarterback so Freddy you get Drew Davis tonight brother Freddy's picked a click all right real quick keys to Victory Dio well I've already alluded to it win the battle up front this game you could say this every single year in this game but uh the panther defense has got to win the battle up front because Bryan's running game is legit and if we don't win the battle up front it's going to be a long night Terry win the battle up front there you go and Dio's right this whole game is going to be right at the line of scrimmage right at the point of attack it's time for football Panthers are going to receive and defend the North End Zone as Grayson cook puts a foot into it and is going to drive it to the one yd line we've got a flag and uh looks like maybe a hornet a little uh ere exuberant across the line before the kick and they're going to come back and re kick it it is a gray sky overhead the lights taking full effect here at w Memorial Stadium as we open the 2024 the 20 and leading the Panthers out it'll be junior quarterback Drew Davis he'll have Luther Tucker in the backfield receivers Elias Payne Maddox Davis Will Carter and Bronson culis up front Garrett Pilkington is the center to his left Daniel Jordan at guard Isaiah Gibson at tackle and to the right big Parker glaze at guard and Jackson Kendricks at right tackle so we're going to see the Panthers on offense for the first time this season as they move left to right here in this first quarter stack two receivers to each side now motion Tucker out of the backfield an empty gun for Davis throws underneath and Bryant just sitting on that is able to make the deflection Tristan Knox there's that underneath throw Doo there's one of them I I said the the over under on on on throws uh within five yards of the line of scrimmage tonight was probably 24 um and then Terry made me doubt myself but now after the first play I may I may stick with my number second down Drew Davis going to throw wide open madx Davis at the 30 35 he's finally going to be forced out of bounds by Matthew Glover but not before he picks up 19 yards and a bent first down well that's why he was my pick to click I I felt like they were going to move it along the in the backfield in a lot of different places and they got him in open space so the Panthers with it first and 10 ball on the left hash has B moves toward the South End Zone through Davis pressured out of the pocket tuxon runs he's over Midfield into Hornet territory at the 49 yd line give him 12 in a bent first down you know Dio Drew ran for 200 yards last year and three touchdowns and but but you kind of got a feeling that he might be a real big impact player in the rushing game this year well he he certainly could is they're going to snap it back to Drew Straight Ahead run as Thomas Cornelius the linebacker makes a tackle at the 46 well what I was going to say is you you see there on the the play before when it's not a designed quarterback run you know it he's got some room to move on that designed quarterback run uh you know the defense played it for you know a pretty good stop so I think it's one of those things where I think he's going to be much more effective what he can do when when a play breaks down B at the Hornet 46 hand off to Luther Tucker nice bit of running behind that offensive line and Luther is going to Surge for a first down down to the Hornet 38 well Deo we saw it last week in the scrimmage against Lorac Christian Luther is is not huge inight like brailen Russell but he runs hard and he really gets his pads low and and we even saw him truck a couple of players along the Benton sideline first down Drew Davis drops back looking to set up the screen as he rolls to his left throws against his body and it is going to be incomplete as Tristan Knox was there applying pressure on Elias Payne who couldn't haul it in second down and 10 B at the Hornet 38 well he was looking for Bronson kulis right there kind of coming across on the backside but uh the Bryant defense did a really good job of of covering him up but I was impressed that that Drew had time to kind of stand back there and and pick a secondary you know he went to his second look second down and 10 Panthers 1037 to go in the first quarter game's opening drive as Davis from an empty gun sets up the screen to Elias and it's a bit low Elias couldn't pluck it off the turf and it'll be third and 10 boy that's uh that that's an unfortunate pass that time because he had the Lane right there I mean that that was wide open Elias very well might have scored on that kulis Payne and Davis come to the right Will Carter the receiver to the left Tucker in the side car to Drew Davis's left it's a hornet defense barking out signals Davis takes a snap going to roll to his left gets outside the pressure and throws and his arm may have been hit as he released that ball by Matt Nelson pass short hops Will Carter incomplete and it's Fourth and 10 bitt at the horn at 38 well a good start you know the first few plays for the for the Benton offense but then that Brian defense kind of bowed up and and just put a stop to it well we find ourselves about seven to8 yd shy of where we need to be to try a field goal Tucker going to move to the slot to the left kulis the H Pack set to the right of the formation got Elias and Maddox over see them run the ball a ton more and they really kept the ball in the air the whole time score is 0 to0 917 to go in the first quarter as a punt away is going to hit around the 23 madx Davis is going to pick it up on the bounce loses it up in the air and uh their Hornets are saying they've got it there is a pow at the 15 yd line and Benton somehow comes up with it wow madx Davis I think was able to get that back you don't think there were there might be a broken finger or two in that pile if that was 1996 Circa 1996 there would have been a broken finger going for that ball chip tooth uh something yeah back spasms yeah you'd feel that one feel that one the next day if you remember last year that 14-6 game got busted open by a block punt by Brian so don't don't underestimate the critical special teams play in a big rivalry game so Davis and uh Payne split to the left with kulus d Drew Davis throws that way to Al he breaks a tackle gets a block from kulus and it's going to be a big gain out to the 32 a gain of 17 and a first down hey I wish they could give like half yards because Bron and kulis would get half of those man what a great job downfield blocking he did do a great job downfield blocking but yet but I do want to that's another one within five yards you tally tallying them over there yeah I I've lost count there's been three already I think prps to the short side through rolls to the wide side lucking throwing wide open Will Carter makes the catch along the Bryant sideline at the 49 yd line 17 yds and a first down I love seeing Will Carter make a sure-handed catch to open the season well and you know that wasn't even really the the the route that he ran he broke that route off um after he got to the end of it actually came back towards his quarterback and and ran himself right into an open spot that was a great play by the receiver first down they hand it off to Tucker good block by kulis on the edge Tucker is going to be thumped by Simeon Mitchell but not before he's in Hornet territory at the 44 that's a gain of seven it'll be second and three well I Gibson's doing such a great job over there on the left tackle man he is doing Yan's work out there 62 275lb senior left tackle snap back to Davis he's going to throw and it looks like a little miscommunication that time as uh the closest player to that football was Hornet Simeon Mitchell it'll be third down well it it looked like I couldn't tell if he was throwing for Luther Tucker or but Maddox Davis made it look like he was wanting a flag for defensive holding because the ball was to him and he couldn't he couldn't get away from the defender I don't know though strange looking play it was a strange looking play K find that out for us please third down pitch to B Davis coming right and he is going to be tackled by Thomas Cornelius after a minimal gain to the 42 it's going to be fourth down and one I would like that noted that that was a forward pass absolutely within five yards I'm pretty sure Terry that I well this is going to get worn out by halftime I listen I thought that I was being a little bit factious when I said 24 but now I'm starting to think I was spot on yeah you may be fourth down and one offense stays on the field twins to Eide now they're going to bring kulis in motion it is a give all the way Drew Davis keeping down to the 40 and that's a fourth down conversion move the chains first down Panthers that's a strong run by our quarterback well it's it's I really like the bringing Bronson culis in Motion in there and and you know he gets to come up and make a block right as he runs by but that's you got some big bodies blocking for you there 62 245 lb senior HB back Bronson kulis helping lead the way on first down he's going to do the same play to the left kulis the road grater leading blocks for Drew Davis to pick up five down to the 35 good gain on first down at second and five boy anytime you can walk away with half of your yards gone on first down that's that's a good play I don't I I I'm just going to say that I don't like seeing Drew Davis have to run it quite as much that's just that's just my personal preference though keep they're going to throw and it's picked off picked off by Nick Miller the senior linebacker Maddox Davis is going to break him down at the 41 yd line Miller had two interceptions last year leading returning tackler for the Hornet defense and he makes a big play causes the first turnover of the season and the Hornets will have it at their own 41 boy he went up really high to get that ball too that was a great defensive play now that line of scrimmage becomes even more important Dio because there's a lot of energy on the blue sideline right now they've got to shut them down first down and 10 Hornets at the 41 going to run it to the short side with Daniel Anderson and the Notre Dame commit is going to be dropped for a loss by Walter Hicks back at the 39 they move Walter Hicks over to that middle linebacker spot do how do you feel about that well I mean Walter Hicks is you know he's been a I mean basically a three-year starter now at linebacker for the most part he's just he gets up field quick go back to Anderson and look at the swarm of white jerseys going to dump him for another loss back to the 36 that's a loss of three and Jay Alford was leading the charge that time great run defense there's another great find that that we found in the off seon hadn't played in over a year Jim comes back he's now the starting nose tackle and holding his own third down and 15 for the Hornets Walker with time going to air it out om Marcus King playing jump ball with Ratliff it's incomplete and that's a three and out following the turnover that's PDC football at its best you get put in a bad spot after the turnover Dio and force a three and Out Boy defense really stepping up big right there on the two runs and then on the third and third and long quarterback really just looked like he didn't have you know like he he looked receiver one receiver two and was kind of out of options he looked really flustered back there the punt is high it's fielded by Elias Payne and he is going to be hit immediately at the 37 yd line down there making the tackle JT Allen who was out last year with an ACL tear it's good to see the senior for Bryant back for his senior season absolutely boy you hate it when uh especially when they are seniors and they get a big injury like that wind up missing their senior year it's great to see that young man back on the field so 529 to go in the first quarter we're still scoreless each team with a two drives and now Panthers with their third drive and it begins at their own 37 yd line ball in the center of the field Drew Davis takes a snap hands it off and making the the Run Luther Tucker I wasn't sure if they might have snuck TJ Williams in there but that was still Tucker and he picks up two to the 39 it'll be second and eight you know TJ moving up to number two in the depth chart for this game really good looking running back it's a reverse to Elias Payne and boy look at the speed of simion Mitchell it looked like it was wide open there Dio and Mitchell just closed holds pain to a one yard gain well and that's the that you know that's the thing we were talking about when you look at a roster size like Bryant's and you see you know 150 kids on it well there's going to be a few of them that have some spade out of that 150 it's just statistics s is having a big game third down Drew Davis going to roll to his right looking looking throwing into traffic now it's going to be picked off ball intercepted and returned over Midfield as Matthew Ferguson picked it off and it took it took a season last year for for Drew to throw two picks he's thrown two picks in three possessions here tonight well he's got to settle down I mean there's no way he should have thrown that football that the receiver was covered up with two Defenders hey he's he he's coming out a seven on seven I mean you know what I'm saying in seven on seven uh it's one of those things you you stand back there and you you you kind of you know try to place your throws but guys madx Davis is is uh tied as the leading tackler for the Panthers right now not a good sign Dio let's go down to you what are you seeing down there through your ex quarterback guys yeah no I just think he can't get he can't get too flustered I think the o line has kind of settled in a little bit after that first possession I think the defense is doing a great job I think I was telling Drew earlier man just get to the sticks in three Downs that's all you need to worry about is get to the sticks absolutely the two yard gain the three- yard gain is is a great thing let's just keep doing that so we got to get a stop here Walter cricks is is a crazy man so let's see what happens lined up at middle linebacker behind J all for handed off to Zack Curtis Jones he breaks a couple of tackles before he's finally hauled down near the first down marker at the 39 yd Line Dio who'd you get on the tackle well it Monson and [Applause] Hicks they're going to give him four and a half it's going to be second and half a yard just over the bent 40 yd line 350 to go in the first quarter still scoreless snap hand it off to Jones and that's that little C counter tray that really hurt us last year Jones tripped up as he reaches the 31 yd line that's going to be eight yds and a hornet first down yeah I think they I think they see something I think they see something right now going to hand it off to thrash this time and thrash is going to carry down near the 20 yd line Landon Jackson finally going to get him down but the Hornets ripping off yards following the interception down to the bent 21 another first down wellow we're lucky we didn't get a flag right there Hornet an all blue handed off to thrash again in the misdirection do is uh clicking for Bryant right now yeah I don't know if they made an adjustment but or just started calling that play but the the they're taking advantage of our defensive aggressiveness and we're just overp pursuing and the running back is it's a kind of a delayed handoff he's just cutting back against the grain and it's wide open going to fake to thrash throw underneath for Ratliff and you can see what the running game does as Ratliff continues to push down they're going to Mark him down at the three and there was a pile of about 15 guys in that scrum it's going to be first and goal Hornets at the three and off to thrash and that time he's hit by Hicks able to bounce off he's smothered at the one giving two at second and goal well thrash does not go down easy he always bounces off the first guy yeah he does and as Brad Harris takes a time out uh Doo It's been uh kind of a tug-of-war and now it seems like Bryant's kind of gained the momentum here as they're knocking on the door to the first score yeah this offense does not look like the same offense that we saw the first two series it's like a total different Brian offense has come out there it's like they finally figured out what works against our defense and it's worked you know several plays in a row well Jim you can see on the sidelines that that when they ran that trap play that you were talking about you called out you could see a shift down on on with the coaching staff on Bryant and they saw something and they ran thrash back on the field and then they started hitting that counter left and right that's been a little bit of the cryptonite of the vent defense against the Hornets they they've kind of come with that counter trck look yeah for multiple seasons and had success with it so well and then that that was a play action Zone Reed pass off of that same exact play that's what they're doing they're playing it off and I can't tell if the Reed linebacker is Walter Hicks or not um but that's exactly where they threw it they threw it to where Walter Hicks would have been standing you know had he been in run coverage so pistol look handed off to thrash running right and he's going to be stopped short of the end zone it's Jay Thomas pepper kned in there Dominic Roy also in on the tackle and it is going to be third down and goal for the Hornets at the one as Cooper Billingsley is going to check in for Brian he is their bigger y 62 230 lb Jr so they've got billingley and Ratliff on the field they're both align to the left left thrash in the side car to Walker's right two receivers to the right they untimely turnovers and uh we just can't turn the ball over Panthers with two turnovers thus far in the ball game it's the kickoff fielded by om Marcus King at the four he returns it loses the football at the uh 18 yd line the Hornets are jumping up and down and they have recovered as om Marcus fumbles it away and the Panthers now with three turnovers in the first quarter the Hornets are going to have it in the red zone at the Benton 18 yeah and and you know two other plays guys uh we were lucky to not have turnovers uh in that I mean that yeah we can't turn the ball over against this football team we just can't so first down and 10 Bryan at the 18 to Benton being far too generous well it's definitely not going to help you against a 7A school if you turn it over three times in the first quarter Daniel Anderson back in there he gets the carry running wide he is going to be tripped up by Cordell Payne at the 11 yd line gain of seven it'll be second and three and what it does Dio is it keeps that defense on the field and it and it gives energy to this side of the field uh that they don't need I mean th this team does not need any help well minute 15 and Counting second and three Hornets at the bit and 11 Walker rolling to his left he's going to tuck and run jtp is going to get him down at the four yd line but it'll be first down and goal Hornets at the bit four now let's not forget too the other thing is when you're the momentum goes against you none of these kids on this Panther team have can remember a panther win against this team Daniel Anderson carry and he is going to be tackled from behind by Jay Alford the young man who hasn't played football since ninth grade comes back for his senior year Brad Harris has say has said oh what could have been if he had stuck with us as a sophomore in junor absolutely well I mean you just saw him run down a legitimate College Prospect second down and goal for Brian hand off to Anderson and he plows behind Nale Rucker and Matt Burke into the end zone and the Hornets go up two scores at 13 nothing with 23 seconds to go in the first quarter well if you if you looked at the box score and you saw that Benton had had three turnovers in the first quarter so on and so forth you would expect the score to be 14 to nothing yeah I mean realistically extra point by Jackson cook is up and it is good K we hadn't come down to you enough tonight what's your uh what's your thoughts on what you've seen in this first quarter yeah the just the turnover I mean that's costly penalty I mean we were just talking down here you know me and Drew not not having to make up for things like you don't have to go make up it's zero to zero where it was 0 to zero but don't have to go make it up but even now I mean getting down to the end of the first quarter 140 all you got to do is just it's one play at a time just let's continue to do one play at a time and execute the game plan and let's do our job defense defense has been in some bad situation so far so I don't think they've been playing terrible but they're worn out and you don't want that Here We Go Again field grief B don't want the air to flow out of the balloon in the first good highend overend kick but it's going to be fielded by Elias Payne he returns it up the center of the field and it's going to be tackled by Cooper Billingsley at the 30 yd line that's where bent Maddox that time good looking motion too had a had a lot of downfield blockers for him Doo well and he's so Shifty get the ball to him anywhere and just all he needs is a crease same thing with Elias first down and 10 Panthers at the Hornet 41 yd line Benton moving right to left here in the second quarter toward the North End Zone going to hand it off and running to the left helmet pops off in the pow as uh Tucker comes up pointing at a hornet it's going to be four very hard earned yards down to the 37 that's still a good play man still a good play Four Yards but when Bri man Bryan does a good job job when they get a hand on you they're not letting go yeah good tackling team second down and six Panthers going to run a little double reverse to Elias he is breaking tackles there goes Elias up the BR sideline out of bounds around the 10 yd line they're going to Mark him out at the 11 that's a 26 yd gain and a first down well the patience that time dos he was picking and choosing the little places that he ran he wasn't WI wide open because that's not what it called for yeah no he did not run wide open but he does a great job of waiting for his blocks to develop so first down and 10 Benton at the Hornet 11 yd line trailing 14 to nothing snap back to Davis Quick Pass batted down at the line of scrimmage and coming in uh hard on the rush that time was Bryant Davis to deflect the pass in complete it'll be second and 10 boy he got up high and knocked the ball down and we had numbers on the leftand side and seem seems like they've done seems like they've done that to us a couple times on those screen plays and I don't know if it's we're calling a screen at the same time they're calling a blitz or we're just free releasing those guys but they're getting in the back field way too quick second down and 11 or second down and 10 at the 11 flip it back to Maddox he had the ball Stripped Away and the Panthers have turned it over again as uh JT Allen has recovered the fumble at the 15 yd line and the uh turnovers just continue to fight P unbelievable four turnovers already and there's 1038 to go in the second quarter four turnovers in 14 minutes well and that you know three of which have been I don't know if they if if all three were in the Red Zone um well you had om Marcus's fumble on the kick return yep that was not but uh we had an interception at the Hornet 35 and interception at the Hornet 40 and now a fumble at the BR 15 so all three of the four in Hornet territory well there you go that's hooker throws High intercepted by Cordell Payne so Cordell up the sideline Cordell knocked down at the one yd line as Cordell picked it off and was a yard away from taking it to the end zone and that's a momentum changer you need is Elias's little brother bringing some electricity man what a great and much needed play for the bent Panthers now that now that they've got to punch it in right here well they they've got to show some respect to their defense and get this ball in the end zone at this point Cordell picked that one off he batted it up in the air caught it at the 30 yd line returned at 29 yards to the one and the Panthers have a chance to cut the lead in half here one yard away you just got to you just got to get it in there and a whistle before the [Applause] snap by the linesman on the bent sideline across the way adex Davis is clapping his hands we're going to get an offside call on defense half the distance to the goal first down so that'll move it up half a yard I would rather had the touchdown that we would have made yeah exactly I but that's the thing is we don't do that play we won't do we don't do I know it drives me crazy let's go from the half yard throw the ball back to the five and get it back to the goal line snap back to Drew going to hand it off to Tucker and Tucker's In The End Zone first touchdown of the season for the B Panthers on a Luther Tucker run behind big Daniel Jordan and the Panthers are a pat away from cutting the lead in half woo boy we needed that touchdown too well we needed the turnover and then we needed the touchdown yes but but definitely and what a great job by Cordell Payne everything was going so fast we didn't have an opportunity to talk about that but boy what a great job he did of finding blockers downfield and getting down and almost putting that in the end zone himself Cas rght snaps Will Carter holds Garett Honeycut kicks it through and with 1019 to go in the second quarter as we bring in KAS M the Panthers have cut that lead in half to 14-7 KAS that was the momentum shifter the Panthers needed that's why it's a team game fellas it's a team game offense and defense I love it and they're excited over here guys I just was over here talking to Bronson couis man what what a what a what a guy I think we need to stay behind him all night he's a great Blocker on the outside edge and so I mean turnover battle it seems like I guess we none of us were expect in this but um what is it five turnovers now and five combined oh my goodness crazy let's keep rocking well and and case before you before you leave us we're not used to seeing the Panthers struggle with ball security I mean this is very out of the North yeah and I think that last one with madx Davis I think there was U I think there was a couple o lineman that missed uh their assignment there and those guys got back there so quick madx barely even had time to secure the ball before he was getting hit it's hard for us to tell way up here the physicality down on the field how how is it oh yeah it yeah it's you guys said it's a battle of the trenches I mean that's where it's is you got linebackers blitzing everywhere you got guys smacking heads on the outsides guys are it's it's a hard- hitting hard noosed game right here and both of them are both teams are not backing down and and just for our listeners to understand the bewilderment that we have with this first H this first quarter the Panthers turn the ball all over six times the entire season last year well I mean Drew Davis only had two interceptions and we only fumbled four times the entire season and so he's already had two this game kick into the end zone and the Hornets will start at their own 20 yd line it's a new day in Sheridan the yellow jackets lead 37-7 over White Hall whoa that offense is Kevin Kelly's offense is they're touchdown with nine minutes to go and the Hornets back up about two scores at 20 to7 yeah that was a really good read and that a really well-designed play it it really was because I honestly I I didn't even see him underneath and I thought he was going for the deeper receiver yeah and uh well he had multiple options he could have either handed it off he could have ran with it himself uh or he could have thrown it to one of two receivers so he had four different things you know to do with it depending on what we did and I mean really that's a game Cher when they introduced The Zone read uh that made football twice as hard on the defense and now two ways about it these coaches have figured out how to you know if you've got a smart enough quarterback you can pretty much you know make decisions on the Fly and make it almost impossible to defend a masterpiece at run in the zone re that time by Jordan Walker and when you've got that running game click and you want to key in on those backs Savvy quarterback with running ability like Walker it really is that added weapon in the back field do well you you start it's a plus one because now you got a quarterback that you got to defend against not just in the passing game but but then if you can get a one-on-one matchup or a two-on-one really that's what all Zone reads want is a two-on-one matchup and whatever the defender does whatever they pick is going to be wrong I mean that's just the that's the whole premise of the deal well you saw there you know he's reading the the first guy uh and depending on what that guy does he's going to keep it and then you know he's making another read so he had to make three reads on that play Grayson King to kick off for the Hornets following the Bryant score he puts a foot into it coming up to field it on the Hop it's madx Davis at the 14 he's got a seam bounces it outside running hard through tackles all the way out to the 41 yd line and bent's going to have it very close to Midfield good field position to start the drive boy you you're not kidding and uh you know that's the thing about it man the explosiveness of some of these players are really a game Chang and you can have as many mistakes as we've had in this first half and a touchdown and a three and out and all of a sudden we're back in it yeah Panthers with trips to the right Drew Davis looks that way heavy pressure from the the Hornets he's going to throw intercepted another pick by Bryant that's Jonathan Frost he's got Running Room Parker glaze giving Chase there's a flag coming over to make the tackle as Maddox Davis and another bent turnover the fifth of the first half wow Frost returned it to the 20 yd line but a flag at the bent 34 as uh penalty as uh big Parker glaze was giving Chase and an infraction against him by the Hornets not sure why Drew didn't just throw that one out of bounds right there if he puts air on that ball probably it could have been a touchdown Elias Walks Into The End Zone I think that was Elias that was deep yeah but he was behind the defense and I think that may have been who he was trying to get to but he's throwing across his body and he just didn't get enough erir on locking the back on bent penalties will what repl the down wow wow offsetting penalties so the interception doesn't count replay the down you had a hold they didn't call a post possession penalty they called a block in the back on Benton and then a hold on Bry the hold would have been on the interception return but the BL hat said offsetting but they replay the down but the Block in the back was against par like they got they blocked Parker glaze in the back on the return if it was a defensive holding it would have offset the interception but if it was an offensive holding it wouldn't have may maybe he got him backwards maybe it was a hold on B in a block back on BR I think that is what it is but they shouldn't be offsetting I I wouldn't think so either and quad Sanders and Brad Harris both asking for explanations I'm I'm that's kind of like when they reviewed satania's punt return touchdown yeah to to determine that whether or not he had dropped the ball going to be a keep by Walker he was hit by Hicks and all depends on the spot they that's a generous spot well he did get up that far he did actually make it pretty far I I don't know that's a pretty good spot based on where he you know they made initial contact be I don't think he's still going to have enough it's going to be tight let's get a can we watch the replay on that he he and Hicks had a stalemate they did have a stalemate but before before reinforcements arrived but I feel like if we can get the replay on that while they're running the flag out or the markers out here we go let's see and a half weather delay last year so uh yeah always good to hop over here and visit with you guys I'm I'm an avid watcher I watch a lot of film on the Benton Panther or Benton football network yeah so you've got a new Venture since we talked last yeah yeah so uh in April I joined up with the Natural State Sports crew uh so they for the most part have been the Natural State Sports network is a technical name now but prior to that they had the uh just the pcssd school you know they broadcast Mell Sil Hills Mills uh there but then also part I'm missing one Joe T Robinson so they did that and then uh myself and Kevin bannan we got let go from our previous Outlet so we ended up coming over to there did the spring Sports and everything we've kind of just taken it through the summer and on into the fall so we're excited to kind of see where it goes since we did add part VI this year you know the back toback 5A defending state champion so we'll be down there to see them play Melissa tomorrow night in Texas yeah I was going to say you go from uh salt bow tonight to uh Metroplex tomorrow night man and I'm I'm stoked so I got to see your Harding bison quick shout out there to coach Paul Simmons and those guys I got to watch them in the national championship game actually got to cover that game from the box at McKenna and Jim when I say that was a one of the more luxurious High School staves I've ever been to I mean I don't even know how to put it into words but apparently this one's even nicer tomorrow about $35 billion complex that they finished last year so yeah I mean I mean I lived in Texas for 3 years and it's just a whole different world now so we're really excited to be a part of that yeah we're halfway into the season opener so uh you cover in high school sports as well as anybody what are some of the story lines the biggest thing as far now that we're in football season I mean it's it's been coaching changes really since Co I mean I think we've had probably about anywhere from 40 to 45 per year and now it's also more about transfers you know there's people throw around the term transfer portal there is no transfer portal in in high school but it almost seems that way a lot of times just because I mean not only do you have kids I mean you've had situations where a kid has left a school gone somewhere else and then come back to that school they've gone out of state it's uh it's getting pretty crazy I guess that's probably the best way to describe it but uh that's that's really the two most common things I would say just the kids moving around you know you look at uh Jonathan Frost from Bryant he was at Bryant takes goes to Mom l wants to come back and play a senior year with his friend so it's just you're seeing a lot more of that maybe more so than you used to it's crazy I've got family in Alabama and read the Alabama newspaper quite often and there was a ground swell when fall practice began uh in Alabama High School coaches because kids that had played team Camp s on seven they show up for what is used to be called two a days yeah and those kids had transferred after spending the whole summer in school yeah it's it's definitely different you know look I mean I I tell this story all the time so everybody knows the name Joe Adams if you're a Raaz back fan he actually trans I graduated with him at CAC and he came to CAC the just talking about two a days this is back when we still had him he came the first day of two a is my junior year now imagine if we would have had Twitter or Facebook or something like that at that particular I think Facebook was kind of just starting to come around but uh so it's I I bring that up to say it's not like it's brand new and it's never happened it's just more prevalent now and it's I mean it's essentially legal now just to go with the school choices and all that kind of course school choice has been around for a little bit but just basically the ru have changed I guess is what I'm getting at you can pretty much just do whatever you please and you know in some ways it seems like the Arkansas Activities Association is a little bit handcuffed they are by by some of the legislation in education yeah I think that's that's exactly right it's kind of one of those thing and I don't want to speak for them of course but I I'm sure that probably there's some things that they're just like well you know what can you really do but uh you know and I'm all about I I will say that I'm not crazy about the way that it's when I am all for a kid if if they feel like there's a better situation for them at a different place then who am I to tell them that they can't do that but we're kind of both old school we grew up in that era where it's like okay you play and I say that again to after just telling that Joe Adams story but I just me personally I kind of grew up just like okay you play where you're at and then you you you battle with your brothers there but it's just a whole new world and as they say adapter get left behind yeah I know uh you know you mentioned coach Simmons uh talking with him him this Summer he said you know with the transfer portal changes on the college level recruiting loyalty has become the number one value that he really has to identify because if a kid comes in and the idea is well we want to Red Church you well now they may say hey at Christmas I want to go somewhere else I don't want to wait my turn Paul Simmons has done I mean it it's almost like I can't even put into words what they have done at Harding I mean they that the Brotherhood I mean it's it's a true statement with those guys I me you look at Dre hall for instance who what was it he didn't even start till the playoffs and now he's one of the top guys in D2 so that's the thing is they just they've got that too deep and it's just such an incredible Bond people want to play there because you know you're going to get taken care of and it's I love the flex bow I love run first offenses I love big time defense so yeah coach Simmons I mean he's one of the best I've interviewed a lot of coaches and he's one of the best that I've ever talked to I guess there's a lot of eyes on Grant tonight and what's going on down there is Sheridan leads White Hall 44 to7 it's kind of an eye opening score for Kevin Kelly's first game absolutely and I will say this like Sheridan I think really more than anything they needed somebody who was going to get them excited about football that town they've got a history of football it's just most of us probably weren't alive or were very very young the last the early to mid 60s to the late 70s you know you had some years in there with Billy Dawson in the early 2000s but really I mean it's just the you think about the excitement for coach Kelly and what's crazy is right before him you had a Missouri Oklahoma Hall of Famer that won eight state championships Kevin Kelly's won nine there wasn't quite as much or even close to the amount of excitement for him now granted he came from a different state so it's a totally different situation and so you know wasn't right down the road that he had made all that history like coach Kelly did at PA but I think really more than anything that town uh they're they're probably going to beat a team that they shouldn't have or like down the road just because they believe that they can win now and look at what they did against Malin in their scrimmage which I don't I don't buy into benefit games I mean as we've seen you know lck Christian has had Benton's number plenty of times and as Bryant has plenty of time Benton has gone on to have some phenomenal season so uh you know I just think that that Malin game was kind of the beginning of what they could be and they're really making a statement tonight 6A uh as you look at it from uh east to west uh it looks like uh the pundits have Greenwood at the top and everybody kind of battling for a second behind them that's probably where I would I would say Obviously you know Greenwood certainly in the West Benton and I know that I mean you know it's it's very convenient for me to say Benton on here but I yeah it's definitely Benton in the East but I think right behind them you look at Jonesboro you look at Marion you know Marion was down to win you know and anytime they playay toddy you're playing him it's tough but Maran I think is probably going to be in that mix along with Jonesboro the East is just so unpredictable man like Catholic what are they going to do they got got a maybe maybe the best quarterback in the East that's not named Drew Davis but he who's he going to throw to that's the biggest question I think with Catholic this year silven Hills has got a bunch of different of talent but they're coming off of an 0 And1 season so yeah I mean I think it's probably Benton then maybe Jonesboro Maran and then it's just kind of a tossup after that what do you see in the west anybody going to uh compete with Greenwood it's hard shalow Christian just been so good for so long Graham not just the team they have built something that is just look at what they did going from 4A and then coming back to the State final for the fifth year in a row once they move up to 5A so I think you would be foolish to to not think that they could make another Deep Run I don't see them beat Greenwood I just don't I mean Greenwood to me I think Park VI and Greenwood have the best rosters coming into this season I mean I think those are probably the number you can debate it but but along with maybe fville Bentonville's Bryant whoever those are probably the top two being Greenwood and Park me so uh yeah I mean I think definitely everybody is chasing park or everybody is chasing Greenwood again in 6A mainly because they are the defendent state champions have so much coming back let's talk about 7A with us uh quite a number of hornet fans joining us tonight yeah um that's a unique conference now you look at Bryant Conway cabat big three but you throw plasy Academy in Little Rock Christian in the mix now I and I think the biggest question with L Rock Christian and Pa is not can they compete in this league and this in this class the biggest one in the state it's how much will their debt pulled up last year in class 6A they were playing you know team they're playing tonight the Joe T Robinson Senators their top receiver John Mark shed he goes down in the first half he was basically when he did play the rest of the season it was essentially a decoy so how will that depth hold up if one of their top receivers one of their top linemen a quarterback goes down so I think that's my biggest question but I think a lot of people are sleeping on cabin you can't do that with Scott Reed Scott is one of the best coaches in the state and I think when you bring in powerhouses like L Rock Christian blasy Academy it's going to be easy to do that and you're like okay well Cat's kind of fighting for fifth we probably need to put them right up there in that conversation with those two you know just because I mean they yeah they were down a little bit last year but I mean they put out a great product pretty much year in and year out so you and uh RJ uh doing the broadcast on the buzz tonight what was your uh assessment of this first half you know I was trying to figure it out because I was trying to put into words like is this like a the best sloppy game we've ever like how do you say it because it's a good game but there's so many turnovers and I and I I just think that uh you know I don't know exactly what it pinpoint what it is but I think anybody would be kind of crazy to basically judge Drew Davis off that first half you know after what he proved his sophomore year and you're playing a defense like Bryant and I mean let's let's call it what it is too I mean you know Benton's had a tough especially in the last 18 years so it could be even just a mental thing I don't know that I'm just kind of trying trying to you know draw some conclusions here but the way that they were able to Bronson cool is that block that that spread or that that brought Maddox Davis out there for that touchdown that really sprinted him out for it I think that that was really big of course I know that Bryant got the field goal but the way that they scored and then they held them to a field goal in that short field position I think that's going to give them a lot of confidence coming out yeah yeah bry's going to get the football but if the Panthers can get a stop right out of uh the gate it's interesting and Terry mentioned this a couple of times Benton only turned the ball over six times all of the season last year and five in the first half tonight uh you know it's just it it's it's crazy to think they're only down 10 that's kind of what I've been saying I'm I'm like man you know you don't ever want to go in you don't ever want to be down you certainly don't want to go into the locker room down but this is probably the the most favorable 10-point deficit that I've probably ever seen at least in recent memory cuz not only did have all those turnovers you had at least one or two others in there that could have been Maddox had that one that uh man what a play that was for him to pop it pops out and he catches it yes so uh yeah I mean it's just one of those things that it's I think if you're coach Harris you're telling your guys look yeah we've really kind of poo pooed the bed a couple of times here but look it's only 10 points where it's a two-score ball game so we still are right here in this thing just like last year was so yeah absolutely and uh maybe the panther depth can hold in there till the end not get worn down Kyle Sutherland a uh a friend and a sling the salt bowl 24-4 with 7 minutes left to go in halftime and looking at the first half stats KAS uh Benton has 12 first downs Bryant 12 first downs 80 yards rushing for the Panthers but 194 yards of rushing for the Brian Hornets and K we talked about the line of scrimmage being so critical in this in this game we'll certainly talk about the turnovers in a little bit but how about the job that's going on on the line of scrimmage yeah I think definitely what you're saying is is Brian Brian is winning Brian is Bri line of scrimmage on both ends they've been doing a great job defensively getting some pressure shutting down our Run game and then I mean they're they're getting the the two three four yarders every time they run the ball and then breaking off some 20 to 40 yarders every now and then so they're doing a great job well they they talked to or Jim talked about the three-headed monster uh that Bryant has in the in the offensive back field with those three scar uh running backs and boy they've really punished the Panthers for 194 yards uh in the first half but the Panthers uh have done 119 passing yards to Bryant 67 for a total offense of 200 yards uh for the Panthers and 261 for Bryant I mean a pretty even game uh offensively but the Panthers really really hurt themselves with those turnovers you know what really blows my mind is the number of plays I mean you've got 79 plays in the first half um that that's a huge number of plays if you look at that for these two teams you know over the course of a game I I was just talking to uh RJ hawk in the break and he W you know he was talking about the first half taking an hour and a half you know and I'm not sure what made it take so long necessarily uh I mean you look plenty of rushes by Bryant 31 rushes Benton didn't didn't rush the ball a lot 15 carries for you know for 80 yards but still that was just a strange first half of football Terry well it it it was there was also you know Panthers penalized four times for 21 yards and and Bryant penalized five times for 54 uh but man third down conversions do man it sticks out almost as bad as the turnovers the Panthers 0 for four on third down and uh and and then but a bright spot for the PDC holding Bryant to only two of seven third down conversions and then the Big Four down stop yeah um at Midfield but it's hard to get past those turnovers and the Panthers you know turning the ball over six times the entire year last year and then and then just losing concentration turning the ball over five times in the first half and fortunately only down 10 points yeah and you know I'm not sure how I feel about this rain falling here in the second half you know that's going to definitely have an impact on you know our passing attack which is really our primary mode of attack so you know I'm curious to see how that impacts you know Justin Ray's play calling here in the second half and you know I mean Benton has shown the ability to move the ball they've also shown the ability to stop Bryant um I think this is one of those you know games where you you obviously you take back all those turnovers that you had and scoreboard is going to look completely different maybe maybe not Benton leading but B Benton not being down 10 at least well I candidly I there's a lot of folks that would say where where would you find a lot of pride in giving up 24 points in the first half uh because you're on Pace for almost 50 points for the game I will tell you this I'm proud of that defense that defense put in a lot of bad situation and they came and they fought every single one of them they had one Bad series where they cost themselves with 30 yards worth of penalties well actually 21 yards worth of penalties on that one drive yeah and uh that was a bad series for them but outside of that Deo they've played really well no they they really have played really well but this is where the question mark is you got 31 run plays by Bryant and so the defense has been on the field for a tremendous amount of time I mean 42 plays that the defense has been out there playing um you know and now here we go into the second half this is what we saw last year is the is the Panther defense going to be able to stand up for four you know a full four quarters so let's talk about the offense as we're coming out uh Bryant will have the ball first obviously you know the scripted is that the defense comes out they make their adjustments and they get a three and out what has this offense got to do in order to get the ball down the field well I mean aside from the rain and I don't know how that impacts things um we've got to open up the Playbook I mean the the reality is we everybody knows what's going going to happen when we line up in that you know trips kind of diamond formation Little Triangle trips it we're we're throwing to the back receiver and the defense knows it everybody in war memorial knows it so you know we've got to have and I know we've got other plays off of that platform well it's time to run those plays um we're not we don't need to save those for the regular season we need to go ahead and and you know do that now now boy and and the Run game really comes into play because right towards the end of this of the second quarter you could tell that that defensive line and and I've been really high on our defensive line there's a really goodl looking football players out there that will that are downright nasty and but you could tell those guys were tired I mean oh they're gassed you know uh Bryant's offensive line averages 260 uh uh two pounds across the front and those guys are leaning on them every play they Rush the ball 31 times and you know that that defense was gassed our offense has got to stay on the field and they've got to establish the run to do that yeah yeah they do and I I I mean I don't mind you know some of the creative little run plays some of those little pitch you know the the the little forward pitch um shovel pass kind of play like that's what that's what m Davis scored on in the first half um golly this is the longest halftime ever yeah 251 still they added it they added it it was you know eight minutes ago I I looked out and I thought good night we've got eight minutes left I mean you've got to literally almost warm your whole team up again yeah you'd think with the 30 minute halftime they wouldn't have to do the three minute add on but uh let's go down to KAS with Coach Harris all right coach 244 five turnovers I know so tell me your just your thoughts about your offensive play defense has really stepped up to the plate and did a great job had a lot to do tell me your thoughts well I would have never thought we had five turnovers first half and to to only be down by 10 with five I feel pretty good about it you know it's hard to say that but I mean that that is what it is you know when you turn it over five times just very uncharacteristic of how we're playing or how we played at the end of the last year you know hopefully that's not a trend the rest of this year but defensively we're a little tired you know being on the field too much you know we got to do a better job taking care of the football and uh then we got to make some plays when we need to we had a couple situations where we should have got off the field and they extended a drive but we're also not playing smart at times we had 30 yards and penalties on one drive that helped them out and we got to play a little bit smarter uh we're going to have to hang on to it in the second half you know we got a couple guys Cordell Payne's going to be out in second half uh so we're going to be a little bit thinner than what we normally are but uh you know I know our guys are going to play their tails off the whole second half and we're going to coach them the whole second half and uh hopefully we can get it going offensively and and make some things happen let's go let's looking forward to it thanks coach so uh Cordell injured uh we we didn't catch that you uh K did you catch that no yeah I that's the first time I've heard about that I don't I'm I guess om Marcus is going to be on other side I'm not really sure who's going to take cordell's place out there Elias Payne his brother uh looks like he'll be playing both ways according to the depth chart but uh they may have gotten in that locker room and and drawn up something else I think K's trying to uh Pride out of the head coach down there right now yeah well and and you know you really don't want to burn up Elias playing both ways um sure need him on offense well and you do have some other weapon I mean Maddox Maddox is no slouch you know 15 touchdowns last year so you know that's one of those things though that in a tight game uh you know your defense comes out now maybe he comes out and plays this first series that's not a bad plan case were you able to get some Intel yes yes I was so what they're going to do is do some rotations um in the secondary and they're going to bring Landon Jackson in and kind of rotate Isaac Hill just don't have a lot of debt back there so going to bring Landon Jackson back there to kind of rotate help out well Isaac had a great year last year as free safety so you go you send him back to his position from last year P Landon Landon had a good first half on the tackle chart Doo yeah hey Landon had a good season last year on The Tackle chart he had 48 tackles last year what do you have in the first half well i' I've got him down from two but but you know I'm not really marking all the assisted you know so there's there's several that he was in the pile anybody on the tackle chart stand out to you at first half well I mean Hicks for one he's you know led the led the team with seven uh Isaac Hill and Jay Thomas pepper both uh five or more tackles um Monson om Marcus King Alfred Davis all with yeah that's that's the funny part Maddox Davis three tackles all all on the interceptions he's the leading tackler uh for those interceptions so he leads the offense and tackles yes Panthers going to kick off here to start the uh third quarter and the uh officials just sent the uh Panthers back to the [Applause] sideline what in the world can we be waiting on now the Hornets uh take the field now the Panthers all right I was scared to death we were about to have a lot delay that's exactly what I [Applause] thought and uh we were going to send it back to the station for music if we were going to have a light and delay at this [Applause] point so it be for the Benton defense to uh steal some momentum here to start the second half oh wow it would be huge and you know I've got a lot of faith in this defense man I I like them a lot and uh and I think that they have the ability to go out and get us stops but the offense is going to have to cash in on some of those and it can all start right here so Jordan Walker will uh be back out there to engineer the bran offense Matt myON thrash will be his running back Matthew Patterson who we saw come out at the end of the first half the center is uh back in there Panther show Blitz hand off to thrash and he is to pick up two yards to the 20 are they're going to give him three to the 23 as we just had a bank of lights go out at one Memorial Stadium oh my gosh man well Owen seals uh making the tackle there on that from his end position still plenty of light Illuminating the stadium but that big Center Bank of lights right at the 50 yd line has gone out on the visitor side of uh the stadium is thre rash gets the carry and he is going to be break tackles my word up the Hornet sideline B had him for a loss back around the 19 and thrash is able to move the football all the way out little lost uh back there right now in our coverage [Applause] so you lose Cordell you lose landed Jackson you're forced to bring some fresh bodies in but uh it looks like uh some of the experience factors Roy Adams was in there that time Tyson Jordan in there that time you're going deep into the the depth chart for guys in the secondary right now Terry well and this is the biggest I mean this is the biggest game that they'll play this year and some of these guys that are being called upon haven't had any any snaps in previous Seasons you know we talked about the strength of Owen seals and uh and Tai Mata having all of those stap snaps and Landon Jackson having all of those snaps last year but when you got guys that you're having to run on the field to fill the Gap and they haven't had any playing time in in big games against Big Time Players um the the results kind of predictable yeah so the Hornets now lead at 45-28 as Brian has scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter in a gain of 22 if the play stands it's one heck of a catch that was an amazing catch I can't imagine what that penalty would be for unless it was an offensive hold that's certainly where the flag was thrown they're asking coach Harris I'm sure he's going to decline it if it's his option nope they're walking back wow the chains had already [Applause] reset so it looks like a big play for the Panthers going to get wiped out by El receiver downfield offense 5yd penalty from the previous spot an ineligible receiver yeah on the far side of the field it's probably a linan and isn't that some of the danger and some of the Zone read game and the RPO game that yeah cuz you're line I mean you're not you're not blocking it like a pass you're blocking it like a run yeah I some reason I'm I'm thinking maybe somebody that had to do with a line could be that it just happened too fast for a lineman to be [Music] downfield it's a flip to Maddox this time he tries to reverse his field the being was a higher scoring game when it you know seemed like it wasn't going to be that for a minute but well these teams can put up some points [Applause] quick Honey Cuts extra point good 4535 Bryant leads it and I still seven turnovers for Benton and they've put up 35 po points and you know and they're I mean they're still in Striking Distance here halfway through the fourth quarter they're still seven minutes in this game well and I mean I I don't know I Bryant could come out and they could surprise me they could run the ball but I also think they could come out trying to throw the ball because that's what they've had success with the last three series well hopefully maybe we've made an adjustment or two I don't know if Landon Jackson's back but if they throw the ball There's an opportunity for an interception and a quick turnover and boom all of a sudden now you're down three you know if you if you get the ball back and score so yeah you're a hiccup away from from well look it was an interception and a lost fumble yeah that gave uh Bryant that fourth quarter Blitz uh you know three touch Downs in span of a minute and uh 6 seconds so well then you got seven minutes left I mean that's a lot of time especially as crazy as this one's gone well 45 minutes ago there was 10 minutes left in this quarter that's all I'm going to say like that's what it feels like oh it's 10:30 yeah it's 10:30 honey Cut's kick going to sail and catching it in retreat was jacobe Boone and I think somebody needs to coach jacobe that there are no style points well he did he had no compete with right now Kamari Austin is a 6'3 1885 lb Junior and the sky the limit for him they kind of kept him in the back pocket here until the fourth quarter but man he has uh kind of taken over single-handedly yeah know well you're not kidding that he he absolutely has and he's made some fantastic catches no doubt so uh Grayson King kicks off going to be fielded by Elias at the five and pay think about this game has been the weirdest game from start to finish I mean it really has yeah five minutes left in the fourth quarter and it seems like we started the fourth quarter at at 9:00 it's it's almost 11: Drew Davis pressured running tucking gets a block on the edge and look like uh he went down without uh contact how yeah how is that uh all right this is the second year in a row guys that the fourth quarter the cramps have been out of control yeah I mean last year the same thing it was a 146 game yep uh is there a conditioning question well I think it's a hydration question not conditioning I mean realistically yeah you know um now I know last year a bunch of kids got IVs at at Westside Wellness as a matter of fact I I got an Iva before I went to to Ecuador this summer uh had a fine freshman year completed 72% of his passes for over 2,000 yards which is huge in ninth grade 28 touchdowns last year so as Shelby is going to hand off as quad Sanders emptying the bench now well I got to go with uh my guy Maddox Davis um he had 11 catches for 113 yards and three touchdowns and uh including the last play of the game just kept playing and uh had a good had a good game one could argue that Elias's hurdle touchdown was good enough but it would do I get some bonus points on the pick to click for that I mean I feel like the hurdles should get a few bonus points style points yeah yeah anyway yeah you can you can tell KAS has been uh he's not been uh been preparing for the season like he should he he's already behind other media to get to coach Harris guys listen I work for a Ministry named FCA and Briant is my that's why I actually did not wear maroon today I still Panther I'm still pan I lead maroon but I got to go I just got to had to go level my boys for a times in my illustrious sideline career so I don't think I don't think I've hit that many though no no might two or three well I don't know I also had to deal with nethery oh so there's a little different kind of different style of interview cuz you know he's kind of like a he answers like a teenage boy one word answers oh hope I hope he list back to this and then he write down there yeah why you anymore with the main Panther talk you want no no we're good with him no all right coach well you guys hear me yeah yeah we're good hey it might not me either it was uh it's hardfought game boys played hard obviously just tough turnover uh battle there but what's your thoughts well it's like we talked about at halftime case I mean goly we turned it over way too much to win against a really good team you know and you know we just got fatigued and fatigued and uh you know we'll make a coward at a lot of people you know as far as the way you play and uh not saying we backed down but it just made us we couldn't play well we couldn't play fast on defense but uh fatigue got us there at the end we played a lot of different players there at the end and we just we wasn't able to do some things we wanted to had a couple guys get hurt uh that we couldn't play in the second half uh and we just don't have that quality depth that we needed to safety position and corner and uh I thought we play tough though at times you know we we had a 28 was it 28 24 lead or whatever it was at H or going into the fourth that's first time that that's happened in a long time and I thought that that momentum hopefully could carry Us in into the fourth quarter but they made some big plays and big situations you know the Austin kid uh the big touchdown and then the heck it was third and whatever it was 18 and he makes a heck of a play and Jay Thomas is in good position if we get it back there I think it was a 10-point game at that point you know and he makes a heck of a play again and that's what that's what happens when you got really good players and uh they make plays you know and and our guys were in the right position but uh I'm proud of a lot of things that we did but we got a lot of work to do a lot of work you know but I think also you know it was it was a hardfought game but I think about guys like Landon Jackson stepping up you know to the play Drew Davis coming out after the three three pick and then with the second half he had so there was a lot of good takeaways too you know from this game playing one of the top teams in the state yeah I mean we played hard I mean Walter Hicks showed what Walter Hicks is that guy's a dude man he he was relentless Jay Thomas pepper on defense didn't come off the field but maybe one series and every time I try to give him break he's like no coach I don't want off you know you can win with guys like that you know and that's what we're going to do we're going to win with some guys that have that play with a lot of heart and energy like you said Landon Jackson step up to make some plays I need Landon to come on and make plays every day in practice you know and he's going to do that I think this hopefully feeds him a little bit uh Isaac Hill another Warrior he got dinged a couple of times played hurt in the second half you know real proud of kids like that you know our defensive line we played about seven guys that's good we got good depth there and we was pressuring uh but you know we just wasn't able to hold up on the back end when they started throwing it around on us so uh and then offensively man we just we just got to clean up on mistakes you know and and if we can do that we're going to be a good team I think so too I think it's going to be a fun season anything you guys got up top nope good all right apprciate you guys thanks a lot thanks coach see you all right so uh 5242 the turnover ratio seven Panther turnovers to two for Bryant and you would think if you're minus five in the turnover ratio you probably lost by eight touchdowns yeah you know Panthers losing by 10 and uh felt like you were in the game all night well I'm going to say I've watched them play L Rock Christian which is a very good football team I've watched them play the Brian Hornets which is a very good football team the toughest team that we've played all year long is the Benton Panthers and I will tell you that the best team that I've seen is the Benton Panthers when these guys lock in they're as good as anybody in this state that is a very good Benton Panther football team you know one thing's Brad Harris has been really good about and I think his perspective do is man it's tough to play one of the best teams in the state every year in your opening game but you find out what your weaknesses are oh yeah and you've got an open date that they have made masterful use of the last several years so no game next Friday two weeks from tonight the home opener against North Little Rock and I fully expect to see some of the the weaknesses that were diagnosed tonight fixed well and and and expect to see North Little Rock coming out trying to pick on what they saw in the second half on film and hey let's attack that secondary because they struggle with you know they struggled against Bryant so we're going to get to see real quickly uh if North L Rock takes to the air you know if they have gotten those issues fixed and it may be a little bit of a depth issue but um you know we saw last year the secondary really kind of stepped up um you know they played a little bit tougher tonight really exposed some weaknesses you know coming from that slot receiver position yeah so and if North Little Rock doesn't try to take to the air you know Harding Academy will the following week so uh all right final words Terry hey the dead week next week comes at a great time a lot of guys with a lot of bumps and bruises out there need to heal up got a lot of stuff to fix but boy I really like this football team if they can clean this stuff up it may be a repeat of last year of not losing another game and I'm I'm excited to watch bent Panther football and and glad to be back with my fall family absolutely so Doo final words I this game actually didn't turn out at all like I thought it would I didn't expect to be a 5242 I wasn't really sure what I expected uh I don't know that I anyway I am curious to see um you know I don't think this is the same Bryant team we faced over the past couple years I don't think Benton's the same Benton offense offensive team uh we've had for several years so excited to see what this team does in conference play that that's going to be exciting so uh Hornets win it tonight 5242 um as soon as we close our audio broadcast um they will get the video broadcast up if you want to uh go back and rewatch I know a lot of the uh parents and kids when they get home tonight that's one of the first things they do go back and watch the game and that video
