for our guys uh this environment should be really fun and great opponent here excited for 8:00 how do you think your players look at this game uh with the the Friday night thing and and playing under the light I I think there's a lot of excitement around it I mean a great opponent coming here an opponent that's gotten the best of us the last few times we playing them um had a great week of practice I think they're excited to be back home under the lights in front of our fan base um this group's got this group's ready to go well coaches always say David I I don't know if it's true or not that the team makes its biggest jump from week one to week two do you subscribe to that and and you have you seen that with your team this week you know we we certainly need to and it's been a great week of practice it was condensed it's a short week but our guys came back in the facility got to work took ownership and the things that we need to keep improving on and really excited to see those improvements show up on the field today where do you think you need to make a jump from last week you know it's in a lot of areas you know defensively our communication making sure we have all 11 on the same page is absolutely critical um we can continue to improve on getting off of blocks and space uh offensively you know it's it's it's just consistency Dave you know we we did so many good things last Saturday moving the ball but it's it's not shooting ourselves in the foot it's valuing the football it's executing the play the way that it's designed um and and again I I was really impressed with our guys intentionality about uh taking those strides this week in practice well you saw Manny Diaz defense last year when Penn State came in and and you guys were in that game of the four fourth quarter against a top 10 team do you see the the similarities with this defense I I think there's certainly a lot of similarities I mean coach Diaz for for a long long time has been known for putting together really aggressive very sound well coached defenses uh what we saw last year at Penn State uh what they were doing was nothing short of exceptional and and what they're doing and building off of here at Duke um we we know we got our hands full uh it's a great unit how about their quarterback Malik Murphy hey of a football player you know I know he's still getting his feet under him in terms of his experience but you know what he was able to do in in brief action uh a couple games at Texas last year and what he was able to show last week against Elon high-end arm Talent accurate pushes the ball down the field really well processes well think he's a great fit within their offensive scheme uh it's going to be a great challenge for our defense tonight all right keys for you tonight you know we got we got to do a great job of getting all 11 on the same page defensively play with great leverage tackle well offensively we got to do a great job of just staying poised they're going to throw a lot of different things at us stay ahead of the change value the ball in terms of you know third down conversions and do a great job of making sure that when we get into the tight Zone we uh we turn it into six points all right how are you healthwise well we're in a good spot you know a couple guys dinged up that we anticipate getting back here in short order uh but uh now than it was six months ago a year ago yeah Mark we're we're in the mix is my answer right we're in the mix it's an everchanging world and so no it's it's I don't feel any more steady or or consistent than I did when we started but I I think everybody across the country would say the same thing right it's a moving Target and and what we know is that on every campus we've got to be as competitive as possible with nil and and proud to report that TR and you is doing everything we can to do that and and we've made some major strides in the last 18 months in particular with our basketball program uh again continuing to help all 19 programs and and making a big difference to their football team as well I mean back toback NCA tournaments that's a beautiful thing right there and look I I yearn for the days when the Big 10 was the Big 10 right there was 10 teams I mean we're so far away from that we can't put the toothpaste back in the bottle so some people just able to ask the basic question is this good for college sports or not good for college sports I guess it doesn't really matter it is what it is right now you just have to figure out the best way to take advantage exactly right it it long gone uh are the days that we can even really ask that question it doesn't matter if you like this or not it doesn't matter if you think it's good for college sports or not it's the reality and so you've got to adapt on campus if you're not willing to compete in the new world we've got 18 members of the Big 10 right if you're not willing to compete in all of your programs and and nil is a major component of what it means to compete today then you're just going to fall behind right and and and unfortunately in today's landscape with realignment and and and I mean look two of our peers in the west coast got kicked out a year ago right that can happen to anybody so if you're not willing to invest and adapt and embrace the future of College athletics you're going to on the outside looking in so we're doing our best to make sure Northwestern uh is all in and and a part of this for a long time I know everyone's excited around here Mark Jackson new athletic director coming over from Villanova this pedigree is huge USC Syracuse choosing to come to Nu early conversations what are you guys working on as far as that relationship yeah really excited for Mark uh to be a wild cat and a member of our family you know you said it but he's he's he's got the background that I think is perfect for Northwest question right now he's he's won at a high level in men's basketball and football he's a fundraiser which is obviously critical to everything College athletics but specifically in the nil era and so he and I have had a couple conversations I mean look I think he's five days on the job at this point he's got to get his feet underneath him uh but but we will absolutely be aligned right that's what I know is is we now have an ad who who understands what it means to be competitive in the nil space he knows what it means for his programs and so we're so excited to have that alignment you know sort of hitch our wag into him stand next to him on the de fundraise for this thing and help our programs compete what are the the main questions that you get from donors who are trying to figure out how they can help and I mean maybe that is the question there but what what what are those conversations like yeah it's it's it's you know our job for 18 months has been to educate right it's it's a really interesting world that so many still have no clue going to take us right that the dollar is what matters and so we're doing it in a really great way we're a charity first we're impacting our neighbors with the nil of our of our athletes and so we're hopeful that our alumni love that approach but at the end of the day we we need the dollars we need people to cut checks we need support and so uh while we aren't Northwestern specifically we are absolutely aligned with this leadership group with our coaches with our athletes so trueu needs needs your support uh and again we're only going to be able to go as far as our our alums and our donors take us do you see a time where it'll get regulated to the point there if you're a starting quarterback in in the Big 10 you make x amount of money if you're a linebacker you make this can you ever see it getting to that point I know we're this this a big guess but where do you think we're going yeah I I look I I don't think you can price fix in that way but I do think that the schools are going to compensate athletes directly here really soon right I think for those paying attention the the house settlement right I think I think there's some stuff coming in the next year or two where the schools are going to pay their athletes directly for their nil there's G to be really big budgets behind football behind basketball and behind a handful of other sports and so it's going to be up to you as a as a frankly as a GM of an athletics department as an ad as a coaching staff to figure out what are your athletes worth and then how do you defend that right so this is this is unfortunately for some this is quickly becoming pro sports right right this is what GMS have to figure out every day when you watch the NFL right that's what this is about to be the schools are going to pay these kids for their nil uh you're going to find you're gonna have to find out what market value is you have to defend that and no I mean the quarterback of Ohio State will make something and the quarterback here will make something it's going to be a lot of money but it'll be very different than what the backup offensive guard makes right right I think I think everybody understands for that free market approach so uh it's coming and again whether you like it or not it's the reality so we need to embrace it Ted what got got paid a ton absolutely are you kidding me through the nose they you kiding me you got a question I just want to know one thing is that um um I thought I forgot what I was gonna say I still forgot I was gonna say oh how about the how about the tuition that these players get it's up to $80,000 I mean does that not play into it like I mean I got $145 a month you know to pay for my my room and board y I mean yeah it plays into it Teddy because because it is still the the scholarship right and and when you look at a football roster look you can now put 105 guys on on full scholarship if you want to right I don't think a lot of schools will do that but you can if you want to so those numbers still matter but what what the big differentiator is now and moving forward is how much can you pay me in nil right and so um scholarship matters at our place we're still going to recruit the same kids we're going to get we're going to earn the diploma right and that's worth a lot certainly in four years but certainly the next 40 years but the nil game again it play a 25 yard strike for Murphy to Moore Jordan Moore his 17th career touchdown again the night 15th all time of Duke in receiving yardage and so overtime number two coming up wild cats have certainly had their share of overtime games over the years 2020 game in overtime we go to the second [Music] OT so this time Duke gets to come back out and play offense that's kind of the way it goes you trade off Northwestern now will be on D and they'll be able to watch and see how they manage this drive all right at the 25 of the [Applause] Wildcats Thomas the running back Murphy will throw middle of the field more wide open to the 10 down inside the five again take the GI to Thomas More wide open middle of the field first and goal from the three yd [Applause] line the snap to Murphy looks to throw left out of the end zone P H's got it for the touchdown yeah back sh shoulder throw right there perfectly drawn up well executed on the mark two plays they score score dke 26 wer 20 so will get their chance y they must score a touchdown and they must convert the two-point conversion to win 2620 Duke that scoring Drive 25 yards in two plays Murphy will end up with Gautier numbers back pedals throws to the end zone back to the end zone in complete and Duke has come in to Evon and beaten the wild cats in double overtime 26- 20 that's the end the football game looked like he had a man in the back of the end zone and I think was pretty close back to the end zone yeah that was cby could not bring it in and the Duke Blue Devils have beaten the wild cats for a sixth consecutive time this time in double overtime 26- 20 well a heartbreaker for the cats who led much of the night had some chances to add to their lead could not do it and they suffered their first loss of the
