a historic first vice president kamla Harris is visiting an abortion clinic Harris is at a Planned Parenthood Center in St Paul Minnesota that visit believed to be the first of its kind by a sitting president or vice president it's part of the vp's Nationwide fight for Reproductive freedoms tour abortion rights have become a major talking point in President Biden's re-election campaign our senior White House correspondent Selena Wang has been following this along with Deputy political director Avery Harper so Selena let's talk about how significant this stop has been for the VP yeah I mean Kira this is extraordinary it's believed to be the first of its kind by a president or vice president to see the vice president Harris walking into an abortion clinic that just shows how front and centered this issue has become not just for the Biden reelection campaign but also for the Democratic party for decades many Democrats they've sort of danced around the issue of abortion they haven't been direct including the president himself who's Catholic but the fall of Row versus Wade changed all of that and vice president Harris she's been front and center on this Freedom Reproductive Rights tour this is just her latest stop in a nationwide tour the campaign believes that this is an issue that's going to Galvanize and mobilize voters to go out and vote they believe it cuts across party lines and by Framing the issue of abortion around freedom and women's Choice reproductive Health rights they believe that can reach a wider swath of Voters so while the vice president is there she's expected to meet with staff members at the abortion clinic and talk about how other state banss have impacted their work Minnesota has become a sort of safe haven for women seeking abortion after the fall of R versus way data shows that the number of abortions in the state have increased significantly the state they're enshrining the right to abortion in the state's Constitution so Avery let's talk about the political Optics here abortion rights have taken center stage in this election talk to us about the messaging here that the vp's trip is sending and what are you hearing from voters about how important this ISS is of abortion still is to them right well the Biden Administration has been unwavering this they have continued to support uh access to abortion care and other Reproductive Rights and so it's uh relatively unsurprising to see uh the vice president make such a visit uh because she has been so outspoken since the overturning of Row versus Wade uh what I think that we are going to continue to see as uh the administration and as the Biden campaign turns its sights to the general election is an attempt to mobilize voters right we heard Selena talk about it being a galvanizing Factor uh the notion of Reproductive Rights it was uh such a a galvanizing factor in uh the midterm elections in 2022 and so I I think they are counting on that to be a galvanizing Factor as we approach uh the 2024 presidential election uh but that being said uh it is not going to be the only factor and the only issue that voters are considering as they are considering who they're going to cast their ballots for and so we're going to have to see uh the Biden Administration also address other issues that rank really importantly to to voters as they consider who to vote for things like the economy and inflation Kira all right Avery Selena thank you both hi everyone George Stephanopoulos here thanks for checking out the ABC News YouTube channel if you'd like to get more videos show highlights and watch live event coverage click on the right over here to subscribe to our Channel and don't forget to download the ABC News app for breaking news alerts thanks for watching
