A Chicago Cubs No-Hitter

[Music] hi again everybody this is the bricks and bleachers podcast all things Chicago Cubs in under 10 minutes Cubs this week have thrown their first no hitter at Wrigley in decades also a couple disappointments on this home stand latest injury updates and a look at the wild card standings are all just ahead the Chicago Cubs have baseball's most recent no hitter a combin no hitter with shoda imanaga Nate Pearson and Porter Hodge holding the Pittsburgh Pirates hitless on Wednesday night it's the fourth no hitter thrown this year in Major League Baseball the first combined no hitter of the Season show to imanaga looked great over seven Innings and the crowd at Wrigley was upset as you could imagine when it became apparent he was not coming back for the eighth inning I was upset too he looks so good 955 pitches over the seven Innings and that number would have been much lower if not for three errors by ESO paradus Pearson and hodj looked pretty good coming out of the bullpen first Cubs no hitter since June 2021 in Los Angeles against the Dodgers if I recall correctly I think the Cubs had that no hitter and then they dropped the next 10 11 maybe even 12 games whatever that count was let's hope it does not replicate here in 2024 that was painful Zack Davies Ryan toera Andrew cha and Craig Kimbrell combined for the No No back in 21 Wednesday's no hitter the 18th in Cubs history and the first thrown by the Cubs at Wrigley since 1972 and Milt papis aside from not giving up a hit Wednesday night Cubs put up 12 runs to close out a disappointing series with the Pittsburgh Pirates Cubs won three games in Pittsburgh last week scoring 41 times in that series and it looked like Monday night was going to be yet another Cubs win Jameson tyion was seven scor at lless Innings left the game with a three nothing lead in comes Jorge Lopez and he did not look good by far his worst outing with the Cubs giving up four runs in the eighth inning newly acquired relever sea Armstrong gave up an additional run in the ninth and the Pirates steal Monday night's game 5 to3 Cubs offense was ice cold Tuesday night a 5 nothing Pirates win Justin steel originally scheduled to start Tuesday night and we learned after Monday night's loss uh that's when we found out that steel would not be t taking the mound Tuesday night so that was a tough hour or so seeing that eighth inning collapse and then finding out the steel injury news Kyle Hendricks though look good in his place Tuesday night but again you're not going to win when you don't score so Following being swept in Cleveland in mid August the Cubs have made quite a run 13 and five the record during that stretch taking two of three against Toronto Detroit Miami and sweeping through three against Pittsburgh and doing it again in Washington so dropping two of three against Pittsburgh at Wrigley stands out Cubs though not making up much ground in their postseason Chase despite being hot the last several weeks they sit four games back heading into play today Braves and Mets are tied for the third National League wild card spot at one point Cubs were just three games back that was after Sunday night three back with four weeks to go I thought it looked pretty good for the Cubs now sitting for back with just over 3 weeks to go that window of opportunity is a tiny one but it does remain open Cubs host the Yankees this weekend and travel to Los Angeles for a three- game set with the Dodgers more on this weekend's series coming up now I mentioned Justin steel missed Tuesday night's start he has since been put on the ilil with elbow tendonitis Craig council is hopeful that steel will return to the Cubs this season or heo to the ilil with a groin strain he has not looked right uh in his appearances the last week and a half or so Jack Neely and Trey Winger recalled from Iowa to join the Cubs Bullpen Neely recently had a couple appearances with the Chicago ball Club making his MLB debut a couple weeks ago Wier recently acquired by the Cubs a couple weeks ago he's made a couple appearances this season with the Boston Red Sox all right news and notes for around Major League Baseball Jackson chrio of the Brewers H his 19th home run of the year a couple nights ago with his next home run he will join exclusive company just the sixth player ever to hit 20 home runs and steal 20 bases before turning 21 griffy Jones Bel Tre trout and Harper are the others Matt Chapman was one of the big names in last season's uh free agent class he eventually signed with the Giants and has had a phenomenal 2024 it's finally earned him that big contract he was seeking in the off season the Giants Wednesday night announcing they have signed him to a six-year $51 million extension Padres Luis rise is in the middle of quite a streak 101 plate appearances without a strikeout that dates back to August 10 it's the longest stretch without a strikeout in MLB since mooki bets in late 2016 early 2017 longest such streak in a single season since Jeff kinger in 2010 and the Chicago White Socks recorded their 32nd win of the season in Baltimore Wednesday night by comparison the O's recorded their 302nd win on May 25 Phils Yankees and Dodgers all had 32 wins before May 20th it has been a nightmare of his season for the white socks now let's get back to the Chicago CBS it is a tough week ahead perhaps the toughest week of the entire season the New York Yankees at Wrigley Field this weekend before a road trip to Los Angeles and the Dodgers it's Luis heel and Jordan Wicks this afternoon 220 Eastern at Wrigley Field heel has had a good year especially the first half of this season more recently it's been a struggle and injuries as well 12- six on the Year Jordan Wicks is 2 and two for the season after recording the win in Washington on Sunday his first start since mid June Clark Schmidt and Javier Assad the starters on Saturday then Garrett Cole and Jameson tyone on Sunday all three games start at 220 Eastern if you don't have Marquee Sports Network you can catch today and tomorrow on MLB Network Yankees lineup is a tough one judge and stto especially they're both having Mammoth Seasons heel and Schmidt however are both coming off recent injuries so the Cubs May catch a break from a timing perspective speaking of returning from injury Anthony Rizzo activated by the Yankees this week coming off the ilil in this series will be Rizzo's first appearance at Wrigley Field since being traded away at the 2021 trade deadline so 22 games remain for the Chicago Cubs 72 and 68 the record coming into Friday's play as mentioned in Prior episodes Cubs essentially have to win two of every three at a minimum the rest of the season plus get help from other teams having to LEAP prog both the Braves and Mets perhaps it was from seeing them in person last weekend but I felt pretty good about the CBs chances Sunday night when they were just three games back but now four games out with 22 games to go it is a pretty steep climb even if you are the biggest Optimist but we'll see how it plays out nonetheless pretty exciting finish to this season with Dansby Swanson Pete Crow Armstrong and Miguel Amaya all turning in really Great Performances over the last month last several weeks have all looked really good and this late season push would not happen without the strength
