still a little tired after that draft process but I'm sure is not as tired as the guys who are actually headed to the NFL it's a pretty good segue JY because I know we got somebody on today that we're uh we're stoked about man yeah and uh we're not going to spoil it now we'll get to it but before we get to it we want to give a big shout out to Steel City wheelhouse where the bar is set tires for Guest today multisport athlete Swiss army knife quarterback for UFC the past two seasons UCF uh and also probably a great lacrosse player Hooper everything that you can absolutely name he's going from the black and gold to the black and gold we're excited baby it is John rice plumy plumly John what's up what's up guys what's up happy to be here happy to have you and thanks for bringing the energy the same energy you brought after you got the call from the the Pittsburgh Steelers man are are you still on Cloud9 a little bit I love that video what do you remember from that call man unbelievable uh I'm I'm you know I get excited that's that's one of the things about me I get fired up pretty easily and so um been dreaming moment you know for a long time right an opportunity to play in the NFL an opportunity to to get to do what I love and get paid to do what I love man it's it's unbelievable and so superc excited as as I'm sure y'all could tell after getting off of that phone call and deciding that hey Pittsburgh's a spot where I'm going to be and so um man ex to say the least for sure what are you doing you're slapping family and friends hands right did you break any of their hands are they iced up a little bit kind of blacked out a little bit right like blacked out not really sure I'm sure there was some some good bit of contact made when between me and my buddy's hand Kenny gotta call him and see if hand bruised I gotta check in on him for sure man did you have any comos with the Steelers leading up to this I'm assuming there there was some chatter and maybe you had a feeling you'd be staying in the black and gold but just give us a little bit of insight and background as to to what happened behind the scenes yeah so um I'm sure as y'all know like the process is crazy right like you're talking to a ton of different teams um some teams are like hey we might take you with this pick might take you with this pick right and so you're playing through a lot of wh ifs in your head right like all right what if they take me here or what if I don't go then then where are we going to be right and so um that's the kind of scenario that that I was put in right a lot of team are calling right there at the end of the draft hey we want you here we want you here and so you're playing a game of what's the best situation what's the best scenario right where would you feel the best and and have the best opportunities to succeed obviously money's in the conversation as well and so um hectic right I think that's one word to to to describe it because you know you kind of go through this process like leading coming out of high school and you're getting recruited and you're going to pick hey where am I gonna go to school right and you have months to decide well in this process you have like 10 minutes to decide right and so it's just a BN it's a bunch of craziness and so um but I just felt like Pittsburgh was the right spot for me um got to talk to to the staff about a week and a half um before I did a zoom um that that that had a ton of people on it and I got to to to say hello and talk to some really really cool people um obviously coach Tom and and Coach Arthur and Coach Tomlin and got to talk to to Mr Omar and so um got to talk to some really cool people beforehand and you know that kind of makes you feel feel good when you get to talk to cool people right and so um but then uh obviously talking to to Mr Mark which is the the the head Scout there and um he was kind of laying out the situation and it seemed like the best spot for me and so uh now I'm here now now I'm excited to get up there and and get on the plane and and head up where it's a little bit more chilly than it is in Mississippi and and play some football yeah Mr Mark the stopwatch king that's what we like to call him around here Mark gors man talk about another guy who who's just hands probably his strongest hands in the game from just stopping the stopwatch for 40 years now it's it's felt like we're hanging out with John rice Plumley here in the sick podcast Steelers crazy John we talked about your versatility man two sport athlete and playing multiple positions on the football field as well we have to ask have you talked to the Steelers and have they told you where they want you at or is it kind of just an open conversation still no yeah so that's one of the the the pieces that that has kind of led me to Pittsburgh right um talked to a bunch of teams and they say hey we want you to play quarterback but we want you to do some different things and and may play wide receiver which is awesome for me right like if I'm getting to play football and getting paid to play football man I'll do anything right I'll be the water blunt right if you want me to be but um but Pittsburgh has has um relayed relayed their confidence in me as a quarterback right they want me to to play quarterback and develop as a quarterback um so excited to to have that opportunity and ultimately excited to get up there uh and a quarterback room with some really really cool names right that I've been watching for a long time so I'm excited to be around those guys and learn from those guys and um compete at the end of the day that's that's what I want to do I had a feeling that might be the case and you know I was just gonna ask you that like if if there was a position you felt like you wanted to stay at and it sounds like you're pretty steadfast at staying a quarterback no shocker obviously we all saw the way you played so that's really exciting we can't wait to watch you do that one thing that everybody did get to watch you do that was really exciting was one of the most viral moments uh in a long time I think we've seen with two sport athletes you've probably talked about this a million freaking times by now but you're playing in a baseball game and a football game on the same day swapping jerseys out like you're at a fashion show or something behind the scenes Dude tell tell us a little bit more about this because you know Steelers Nation has been talking about it Mr April 14 Mr but man what an unbelievable exper right um for as long as I can remember I've wanted to to play football and or baseball at the highest level right and so went to to Old Miss out of high school and I got to do just that I got to play football and baseball and then I went to to UCF and I got to to have that opportunity there as well and so um man it was unbelievable but then uh in the spring it was all it was easy right in football season you're a football player you know baseball season you're a baseball player but right there in the spring there's a there's a segue where like hey I've got to be both right I've gotta I've got to do both and so um credit to to to UCF staff on both ends to be able to put me in a situation where I could do both so a lot of days it was you know we did football in the morning so up at you know 7 o'clock team meeting getting taped ready meetings you're doing practice right you get done with practice I go straight to the Garvey which is our cafeteria I would get it to go plate and go over to baseball that'd be around 12 o'clock um and and we would start early work at baseball which was you know um you only get so many hours with coaches and so the rest has to be voluntary and so a lot of our voluntary work would happen before practice so I'm eating lunch and it's a go box guys have already started their early work I'm you know changing clothes real quick going hitting in the cage and then we're starting practice and getting done with the day about you know 5:30ish sixish go to the house do a little bit of homework I had online classes which helped you know I could get my my work done one time go to bed early and do it all again and then a the the date came around where hey you're going to play in two games and was like hey let's rock and roll right so um and then of of course everybody has seen that I feel like and so um if you haven't go check it out it's it's it's a really really cool video that they made um but a really really cool opportunity to to say the least and it wasn't just playing in two games you bought out in both games too it wasn't like you took an it wasn't like you took an offer uh uh you know you sure you didn't have a track meet that day too listen if somebody want to play ping pong I could have done it but that's about it that's all that's only thing we could fit in that day great stuff so what do you know about the Steelers organization and have you ever uh been to Pittsburgh before played in college here I have not I've never been to Pittsburgh I've never been to to the city and have have not been able to see it yet so that's one of the things that I'm super super excited about um as far as knowing a ton about the organization to be honest with you and canly speaking I don't know a ton about them right I remember just watching Ben rothberger as a kid and the the toughness that he displayed like I was like man I want that right like going in there broken nose right getting in there making it happen happen like that was something that I I wanted to to hey man when somebody watches my game I want them to see that about me as well and so um you kind of take bits and pieces from from from people but I just remember been office Burger being so tough and I was like man I hope to be that one day and so now obviously they have the opportunity to be in the same black and gold as he was was is really really cool yeah well we're excited to have you and you talked about that quarterback room a little bit with Justin fields and Russell Wilson what do you think you know you could learn from that you know just being in that room and just kind of talk about that I mean I'm sure that's pretty surreal man unbelievable right um You kind of again like I was saying you take bits and pieces from people but uh I kind of you kind of see yourself sometimes in people right and I kind of see a lot of similarities between me and Russ or at least I did when I was a little kid you know growing up like he's not the biggest cat in the room he's not the tallest guy he can extend plays with his feed he's athletic and he plays baseball right that that that was one thing that man I was like man this guy looks a lot like me right and so um he was I was a big fan of his growing up and so now having an opportunity to to learn from him to be around him every day is is super super cool and a cool awesome opportunity and obviously with Justin Fields um see what he has done and uh the athlete that he is excited to learn from those guys excited to to pick up on things that they that they have done uh for so many years and um again excited to be around them every day yeah I I think that I'm going to start the petition now on the sick podcast Steeler crazy for you to throw out the first pitch because Russell Wilson just recently did it so since you're a multiport I think it's only right to welcome you to Pittsburgh Pirates could use it right now too what do you mean we should sign him maybe from the Pirates the first pitch in all honesty I agree uh so just kind of evaluate yourself uh to our viewers tell us about your strengths and what are some things that trying to work on right now yeah uh so um I don't know if if people have seen uh this past football season uh but this past football season I had a right knee injury um early on in the season so you see me uh kind of in some games kind of limping around wearing this huge big uh knee brace um I think that is a part of my game that is is I think I bring a little bit different of a piece to the table um I think I'm a really really good runner of the football right I think I can cut you if you don't account for me in that aspect of it um I think I have a big arm right I can make the the the down the field shot um something that I'm really working on right now is footwork in the pocket right um the guy that I've done draft prep with his name is Jeff Christensen and um he's trained some really cool people Patrick Mahomes you know Trey Lance uh he's Aid no Connell right and so he's seen a lot of football and and and the one thing that we've been working a lot on is footwork in the pocket right and so um you know a lot of times guys will you you'll train uh with quarterback coaches and you train when when everything's perfect right everything's going right and and the reality of it that's not the that's not the reality of playing football right you have a lot of stuff that's going on and a lot of stuff that's happening right there in your lap so you have to be able to move around and and playing a phone booth is what my quarterback coach said uh in college and so that's thing that I've been working on and excited to to show you're watching a sick podcast Steelers crazy make sure you hit the like button subscribe share this with a man in you maybe a little Billy Joel action uh tell us about that I can mix it up if you need me to uh no I've played piano uh from second grade till about Middle School playing classical piano um I uh I took lessons once a week my grandmother played in the church growing up for close to 30 years and so um learn from from Heron and so uh it it was it was competitive though right like you would learn this this piano piece and then you would go to uh a spot that had judges and like hey hey you had to perform and they're ranking you you know best to worst and so uh not trying to brag or anything but fourth grade you're look the best in the DAT piano let's go no no I was than just had a little L guy I wasn't I wasn't very good then but then I learned I could play some stuff that here on the radio and so uh it became a lot more fun for me at that point and so it's something that I enjoy doing to this day I'm sure that drove the competitive fire a ton you don't hear a lot of athletes that are like man fourth grade my piano class I was crushing it and then before you know it this led me to just a Star Quarterback yeah yeah no I've always been extremely competitive right like if reason on the street man like I'm winning right and so I just did that in everything I did whether it was piano whether it was you know academics whether it was football or baseball right I'm I'm trying to win I want to win and so uh that's kind of always been who I am and and who I am today so all right let's hit you with a couple rapid fires ready what's good down there in Mississippi hit us taco salad my mother makes an unbelievable taco salad or taco soup either one of those Tac not necessarily A Mississippi specialty uh I would imagine that sounds incredible yeah it's unbelievable you need to try it come down to Mississippi we'll make taco Super Taco South oh yeah I mean we we'll take you up on that for sure any day Pittsburgh we have some interesting food that's for sure when you get up to to the Berg Jordan and I will get you all the details we put french fries on salads so your taco salad might have french fries I'm not even I'm not even kidding you're if you're a guy that likes carbs on salads if you're putting tortilla chips on it and beans whatever it might be you would like a Pittsburgh Sal I'm all in I'm all in for let's do this perfect you'll fit right in fits like a literally um all right how about uh do you have a favorite movie hit us with a favorite movie oh I've always been a Spider-Man guy uh really right and then you get into the conversation of hey do you like the old ones the new ones mixing in with the Avengers who do you like the best I'm an original OG uh Spider-Man movies um those were those were me those were my jam when I was growing up and so uh I was the kid that had the full spider bed spread that was me that and I would lie to you if I said I don't have a Spider-Man pillowcase on one of my pillows would be L thank you for the honesty yeah toad Maguire Spider-Man let's go those are my favorite too The Mask down kirston dun in the rain that was that was my stuff and Andrew Garfield Spider-Man's come on man they it's still good but but I feel you on that one um all right what okay what about you you talked about music what about favorite music musicians or favorite uh your favorite band or anybody yeah I'm a country music fan I listen to a lot of different music but right now I love country music I've grown up on country music um I'd say my favorite artist right now is Riley green um I think that uh a close second is Luke Holmes um and then I'm gonna put Cody Johnson Morgan Wallen in there for three I like them I like all of them I'll hit you with a cheesy joke whenever you're in in Pittsburgh you're going to learn that when it rains it pours because we get a lot of rain up there so I'll hit you with some Luke Combs right there there you go Jordan go ahead man yeah so before we get you out of here again we really appreciate I know that all nation is gonna really enjoy this episode if you had one message uh for Steeler Nation now that you're officially a Pittsburgh Steeler what would that be I think my message uh and something that that I would I guess bring to the table right um is that hey I'm I'm giving you my word I'm giving you the a promise that you're going to get absolutely everything I got right whether whether I am whatever role I'm I'm playing right if it's practice squad uh giving a look to the defense you're gonna get you're gonna get everything I got if it's hey somebody gets banged up and I'm throwing in the game you're gonna get everything I got um and that's how I've always played the game that's how I try to do everything that I do and how I try to go about doing what I do um but that's a promise that I can make that you're going to get you're going to get all of John rice Plum and anything that he's doing blue collar and grit I think again I must have said this three times this podcast you're gonna fit right in you just got to learn to put fries on everything then you'll really be a local it's the last piece hey we really appreciate your Steelers football everybody's tuned in to KDK yeah listening to Edmund Nelson as he's eating his ribs you know how it goes um but watching a kid like this that's what it's all about and um you can't wait to watch his plight in his journey yeah and and it's just another we say this all the time a lot of these guys that we have on there just another easy kid the rude for um just you know excited to see him like you said he's kind of like a Swiss army knife but the Steelers said you know hey we want to develop you as a quarterback and I think that the big thing with the Steelers organization is that even if there's not a long-term plan for some of these guys I think I think that the roonies set all these young men up for you know success in the league whether it's with the Steelers or with another team and I mean when you come in and you can learn like you said you walk in and there's six lombardis in there you're you're not there's very few other franchises that you're going to go in and have that and and Pittsburgh's one of them so take it with a gr see what the interest in this guy is high by the way and I know he's off the show now um so I could I can mention the fact and I'm sure he wouldn't have been embarrassed by it but I can mention the fact that he got the high signing bonus ever for a Pittsburgh Steelers undrafted free agent um he also as he just mentioned did a zoom with Omar Khan Mike Tomlin it sound like a Rooney was on there like this isn't this isn't like they're sending a regional Scout to hang out with him there he he got to meet the the upper echelon guys the cream of the crop the top of the totem po so um there's interest they I mean listen they have a agent quarter back and Russell Wilson obviously who is in the fourth quarter of his career Justin field still you know is unpro not unproven but I I guess the right word is uh in question who knows what's gonna happen if he'll be yeah he's he's still you know we'll see what happens with him and Steelers haven't extended him and Kyle Allen the third string who's who's you know a reliable guy who's a journeyman been in the league for a little while but JRP can make some noise I'm I'm
