it is Friday finally July 19th I'm Jason Williams traffic out there wow if you're headed out for the weekend uh good luck over the next few hours pretty crowded coming up uh we'll continue Andy's top 50 movies list uh we have new films in theaters here in Logan to talk about as well it's a strange little Lull in the Summer movie season because we still have um five six seven eight big releases that everyone's watching for and of course uh Deadpool uh in Wolverine Deadpool 3 uh July 26th so um you know it's anticipated to be one of the big money makers of the Year Twisters is also coming um Despicable Me 4 uh you can see you can see uh a quiet place day one in Logan inside out two Fly Me to the Moon which by the way I got a chance to see this um you should and I'm saying that as a person who's not a huge fan of romantic comedies I don't mind them I'm not opposed to them uh in fact I think men that are opposed to them just outright are being silly um they can be great if done well and this one kind of a little bit of something for everybody because Fly Me to the Moon is uh a romantic comedy starring Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson that is a fictional story of of uh the government uh in case something went wrong faking the moon landing for a film on a film set um not in the way that the conspiracy theory usually goes which is that they actually fake the film Landing or the moon landing in this case they were afraid something would go wrong they didn't want Russia to beat us so they were fully prepared to fake it if they needed to uh so the premise of the movie is we didn't end up needing to uh it sticks with the actual history not the conspiracy theory but they uh suppose that the conspiracy theory maybe came out of a kernel of Truth in which there was actually this movie Set created to fake the moon landing if something went wrong that's the overall premise of the movie and of course there's the romantic comedy side of things with Channing and Scarlet wooing each other throughout um there's drama there's uh great antagonists and and protagonist but it also is a really cool uh very authentic history of those final weeks and months of our landing on the moon I've read a lot about this I'm very familiar with the history and the movie tracks perfectly with the history and they actually recreate some of those hangers and some of those test launches that went South and some of those control rooms and the tension in those control rooms as they you know prepared for the lunch and it it was really a cool movie so uh even if you're not a fan of romantic comedies uh that I would say the romantic comedy portion of this movie is only about a third of the movie sprinkled throughout uh the rest of it is is really a a a fascinating look at things that have never been portrayed on film in a dramatic way like this the actual history of those final months leading up to uh Apollo 11 and the successful uh first step on the moon um and and by the way the history is actually so exact they they actually include in the movie the real story of what uh those first famous words one small step for man one giant leap for mankind they actually include in the movie The History of where that came from where why why that was that was actually not scripted but there was a reason he chose to say that he knew he had to say something right um but uh me i' I'd fail i' I'd jump off that step onto the moon surface and go woo and that would be my famous quote that I'd be remembered for forever uh but it it it really was a good movie um also in theaters this weekend long legs this is a horror movie that's getting a lot of buzz it is rated R it is a horror movie I have to stress that it does start start Nicholas Cage which means you're going to get a little it's going to be a little off a little left of center uh because that seems to be what he likes to do lately in the movies he chooses but everyone's talking about this as uh not only one of the best scares of the year but but possibly one of the best movies of the year so that is in theaters here in Logan you can also see sound of Hope the story of Pome Trot uh this movie I want to give this one a little plug because it's it's put out by the same Studio that's really struggling struggling right now Angel Studios uh they're struggling because their their big launch as a studio coincided with uh the launch last year of uh sound of Freedom which uh just weeks after it hit theaters was meshed in Scandal uh including you know the the what we know now that most of Tim Ballard's story was fake was made up uh most of what operation Underground Railroad uh claimed to be doing over the last decade plus to to rescue children from the trafficking industry Global trafficking industry uh was not true that they were dependent on a a psychic a psychic was informing them on where to point their volunteer operatives um they saved very few children outside of that first initial uh project they were involved in and even that has been picked apart now by people involved saying you know the work was actually done by government agents um the operation under round railroad was just kind of there uh it led to the the Quasi resignation of our own attorney general Shawn Reyes who uh has been close to Tim Ballard over the years and when allegations of um sexual impropriety and this couple's ruse that he would use to to convince women to shower with him and sleep in the same bed with him and stuff before a mission um all of that took down an attorney general who decided Shawn Reyes was going to run for United States Senate uh John Curtis of course uh got that job in the primary uh but sha Rees had planned to run um or at least if not him he was going to endorse a run by Tim Ballard and then all of this came down it imploded and sha Rees not only didn't run didn't endorse endorse Tim Ballard to run for un States Senate he actually announced he wouldn't run for re-election so a quasi resignation from him realizing he was caught up in all of this and in multiple ways so Angel Studios has struggled since all of that uh sound of ho sound of Hope or sound of freedom is now remembered as a kind of a black mark on the the documentary uh or dramatized true story film making World um and they put out another movie and and I'm not sure why but they chose a similar title sound of Hope this one though is actually a true story and it's it's a verified true story and some folks that I know that have seen it said it is great it hit theaters on July 4th uh in limited run it's now here in Logan um so I'm just going to plug that one and say you know this this movie though associated with all the Scandal and an embarrassment for Angel Studios over sound of Freedom last summer this one's a little different um this is a story a true story of these these 22 families that belong to this rural uh black church in East Texas an actual town called Pome Trot and um they uh these 22 families end up adopting a total in the end of 70 plus uh kids in the Foster system who are uh not finding homes kids that are you know difficult or have some issues and and they're not finding homes and are not able to stay in homes and these uh these families that all belong to this black church decide they should do something about it and and they work out a way to adopt them all it's a true story this actually happened um and again it's not going to go down like sound of freedom from Angel Studios last summer uh because this true story has been verified this is actually written in the history books and um people that I know who have seen it have really liked it so uh don't let Angel Studios and and that whole sound of Freedom Scandal last summer uh scare you away from seeing this one it is in theaters here in Logan and finally you can still see part one of Kevin Cosner's he says this is his life work uh is called Horizon an American Saga it's broken into two parts chapter one chapter 2 chapter one hit June 28th still playing in theaters here in Logan chapter two of this uh what is in the end going to be a sixh hour uh Western basically is uh coming out August 16th so uh there you have it uh those are the films playing in Logan here roughly and again a couple of the the ones that are coming up we'll talk about it all on the for the people movie show and again continue Andy's top 50 movies of all time and uh some listeners have weighed in this week as well so we're here from some listeners who emailed in uh their their picks for top 50 of all time so uh coming up this hour big news of the day you heard it in the ABC News break at the top of the hour uh flights businesses hospitals uh businesses small to large government offices even here in Utah um absolutely grounded by this crowd strike event that happened today uh the trouble started with an update issued by the cyber security firm crowd strike which is tied in with with Microsoft with uh Microsoft Windows um specifically the operating system it's used widely by government agencies news outlets um CNN was affected by this Fox News was affected by this uh hospitals Financial companies Wall Street was affected by this um government off offic I mean it is so widely used it's scary not that it's widely used but what happened is scary uh and they released an update today and it went South big time we'll talk about what this is and also how it is going to affect you after [Music] this with so much Financial uncertainty are you wondering if your retirement savings will last [Music] [Music] a.m. welcome back to kbn news for the people going to get a little nerdy here on the show for a second uh we're going to step into the world of it in cyber security uh the reason for this is that you are likely going to be affected by something you may have heard in the news today uh an update released by a widely used cyber security firm crowd strike based in Austin Texas uh this morning they sent they sent the update actually um Thursday morning to a lot of customers and then widely more today and um then everything started to go down um it started yesterday afternoon and evening and then by this morning everyone realized okay something's up here um there were reports from all over the nation and and world but here in the US there are reports of 911 operators not being able to respond to emergencies uh hospitals cancelling surgeries for lack of access to all of their um everything uh some retailers had to close shop for the day um there were some retail chains that just literally could not operate without their uh their servers and their computers and checkout stations obviously um and this all traced back to basically what was a a a little paragraph of bad code a software code in this software update that was released um and again this was a Global issue uh it caused uh disruption to to governments Airlines uh flights were canceled and grounded I have a relative who was uh flying out of boisee to a meaning to fly out of boisee to uh to California uh they were sitting at the airport for about 3 hours today waiting for that to happen uh their flight was delayed by about 3 hours um this was so basically this is what is crowdstrike uh it's it's the world's most widely used uh security software for the most part um it runs either behind the scenes are in conjunction with operating systems and um including Microsoft Windows uh customers running Microsoft Windows were running into all kinds of problems today uh computers with nothing but uh blue error messages and more um crowd crowd strike CEO said uh so they they quickly well I mean as quickly as possible had a fix out to the problem in the software that caused this uh the problem is um that uh the according to the CEO of crowd strike um some of their own internal systems were affected by this as well and are going to acquire some what he called timec consuming manual fixes so uh as of right now thousands of flights have been cancelled uh tens of thousands were delayed uh long lines at airports in here in the US Europe Asia Latin America um that what brought everything down America Airlines for example lost access to checkin and booking Services they couldn't people coming in to to check into their flight and they could not help them they couldn't check them in to get on the flight most of it's been resolved as far as the airlines go hospitals are back up and running most retail shops who had to close are back up and running uh but again the problem is still there and one of the big concerns is that crowd strike right now can't guarantee that people are because their job again is cyber security to prevent governments and hospitals and schools well actually they're not used in schools there's a reason for that um but uh TV stations um there was so some TV stations couldn't actually air their their news today um their their system would not allow them to actually broadcast uh with everything being you know in digital format now and running off of a server somewhere it they couldn't broadcast afternoon news or even Morning News in some places uh state and local governments had problems courts were impacted by this here in Utah there were a couple of courts that uh that were not able to actually access documents they need to do the business of the day so they just kind of had to postpone everything and um yeah so uh most systems are getting back to normal now Associated Press reports affected hospitals who had problems with uh appointing systems and uh you know even scheduled surgeries and things like that that require on checking in and verifying patient uh Health Data and stuff like that before they go under the knife they couldn't do that so things were postponed and scheduled uh Associated Press had a story this was heartbreaking um a woman named Allison BOS um who had a 70-year-old father in for what was basically an emergency heart surgery today in Kentucky and that surgery was cancelled because of this Tech adage um Bala says it makes you realize how much we rely on technology and how scary it is um she said her father was transferred to another hospital that wasn't having the issue and is w in uh at what is uh titled Baptist Hospital in Kentucky to see if this surgery can happen there before the end of the day but again you know this uh in that case at least literally put a life at risk uh American Express couldn't process transactions so if you had your American Express card declin today this is why um and one that I mean this shouldn't be funny but it it kind of makes me laugh but one of the retailers most impacted by this was Starbucks uh Starbucks could not uh effectively charge people money you could walk up and say I want this and they could start making it for you they couldn't process card transactions they couldn't uh people who use the app to order ahead um that the app wasn't telling them there was a problem but when they got to the location uh the the workers at the location never got the message from the app uh that that an order had been placed um so Starbucks locations uh throughout the country were affected by this uh Time Square in New York right before 12:30 a.m. uh all of those digital screens that uh you know that pepper Time Square and make it look the way it looks um all of them turned blue with a simple word in the center of the screen that said recovery and it was creeping people out there was actually a little bit of a panic at Times Square I guess just after midnight last night so um cyber security experts say the from this is real uh all the systems are running the same software we've made all of these tools so widespread that when things inevitably go wrong they will and we've seen they can go wrong on a huge scale uh Germany's uh Security Agency um the head of Germany's it Security Agency uh Claudia platner said we we can expect a very quick solution in this case and that should be a lesson this may be something we have to address on a global scale and it may require Del into public policy we're not taking hours some of these systems won't be back online for days and when we're talking hospitals emergency response 911 operations courts we can't take days um and that of course is the same here in the um in the US uh crowd strike es estimates that about 30,000 home users of Microsoft Windows will be affected by this about 30,000 people that will not be able to actually do anything with their computer um in an interview today on the NBC's Today Show crowd strike CEO uh George Curts uh apologized he said the company's obviously deeply sorry for the impact they've had uh to customers Travelers business owners hospitals those worried about loved ones uh emergency response operations and more um and and said you know we've been affected by our own mistake here too we know what the issue is um he said but it may take quotes some time for certain customers especially those lacking their own inhouse expertise to be back online so while crowd strike's update was uh automated the fix itself is going to require um handson they're going to have to go in and manually delete files that came in the bad update yesterday as long as those files are on the computer or the server uh the problem won't be fixed so this could take a while um from the public policy point of view uh no one here in Utah has weighed in on this Iowa governor Kim Reynolds has uh there was also a statement from the White House um President Biden uh in on this and several uh Republicans and Democrats alike in the house and the Senate have opined and all of them have basically said the same thing this might be something we have to look into but that's where it gets complicated because what can you do from a public policy perspective um and one option other countries have tried this is is where you know you you uh you sort of force competition into the system so uh but that's tough because everyone was using crowd strike because they're good and they're reliable I mean this is really their first face plant I mean it was a global face plant very serious but they're very reliable that's why everyone was using them and so what are you going to do pass bills at the state or federal level saying you know only 30% of once hit 30% of companies using one cyber security firm they others everyone else has to go choose a different company I mean I don't I don't really know how you address this from a public policy perspective but Republicans and Democrats alike have signaled an interest in at least exploring options on that front so probably the biggest and and most impactful uh cyber security oops that we've seen so far but it really does drive home how dependent we all are on this and really if you start thinking about it uh only a few handfuls maybe even one handful of companies are behind much of what we experience and rely on throughout our average day in our digital lives uh and maybe that's not such a great thing we'll be back with more of kvn news for the people after the news with kvn news Bill [Music] Walter thank you Jason kbnu news is brought to you by Bell medical former Utah State football coach Blake Anderson's response to the school's termination letter says he was fired for convenience not for cause and that downtown Salt Lake you maybe have followed the story a bit uh started with Utah getting official word that we we got a hockey team pretty big deal I'm excited uh but it does come with some drama in that uh Ryan Smith uh the uh very wealthy person who is going to be kind of overseeing the hockey team coming in and all of that worked with the legislature in Salt Lake City to put together a a process that is now underway to build a stadium um that that might I mean this might rope in with the major league baseball thing too uh or we should rope in the Major League Baseball thing too that's a ways off still but uh all this will be happening at once um and not quickly we're talking I mean this is we're talking the next 5 10 years of downtown Salt Lake here but um long story short they they first proposed a complete rebuild of downtown and and Salt Lake residents lost it for with good reason it looked a lot like Vegas and people started saying look does downtown Sal like need to be rebuilt um and Ryan Smith backed down um and and admitted that maybe he wasn't as familiar with downtown as he should have been before opening his mouth uh those were his exact words and I I respect him for for being blunt uh and self-critical in that way um after that the the conversation started and this again this is going to go on for for years um but one of the plans that was proposed uh which is now sitting in limbo and and is currently not the most popular plan was a plan that would have uh would have gotten rid of a braval hall if you're familiar with downtown Salt Lake uh this is the the home of the Utah Symphony right now uh it has a lengthy history um in the Arts world and more than 45,000 people signed an online petition calling on Salt Lake City and the Smith Entertainment Group to scrap the plan to knock it down saying it is a cultural and arts center the concert hall has uh you know been a part of of sports entertainment culture and even conventions over the years it's it's attached not physically but it's basically part of the Salt Palace Convention Center block there and uh it's um obviously very popular uh and composer John Williams weighed in legendary composer John Williams the Deseret News rights known for his countless iconic film scores over the past several decades has penned a letter calling for a braval hall in Salt Lake City to be preserved uh called it the crown jewel of cultural life in Salt Lake City and uh he wrote in the letter in our fast moving techn technological age great Music performed by worldclass orchestras before live audiences is a vital thread that binds us to our cultural past and to our Collective future translate that I mean sure you can go watch this stuff on YouTube anytime you want uh and and you can download the actual recordings now uh anytime you want through your digital music subscription of choice uh but Williams is saying there is something about actually sitting down in a concert hall which there aren't a lot left of uh honestly to see this stuff that uh is important and better and so he said I simply wouldn't be th he said this simply wouldn't be possible our Collective future he says wouldn't be possible without uh what he calls temples of music like a brenol hall so I urge you to preserve and protect this artistic treasure um he signed the letter and made it public uh it was made public sorry uh today by the Utah Symphony and it comes as Salt Lake County leaders are continuing to weigh their options for the future of the building um first they said it was going to get uh raised and then there was this outcry and so they said okay never mind that's off the table a braval hall won't be touched and then this week it was kind of stirred back up again uh when a a document was uh put out or leaked um well not really leaked it wasn't a secret but it was a document was uh discussed at um city council meeting or a County council meeting and the document contained the removing Braven Hall from that square to put something else there uh was on the map again and so people are are saying hey what gives um this all comes when Smith Entertainment Group requested two blocks east of the Delta Center for a quote major project that would keep uh Utah Jazz and the Utah Hockey Club in downtown and the Salt Lake County mayor Jenny Wilson in back in May said she wants to keep she wants to do that but she also wants to keep a rinal hall in its present form and uh the county had strongly considered a plan to actually demolish it so that's where the controversy comes in here uh but again legendary composer John Williams taking an interest in Utah today uh Penning a letter saying it's in his opinion very important to save cultural Halls uh he calls them temples of music like a braveny hall um so by the way this is where Williams Williams's familiarity with Salt Lakes AB bravino Hall there on the corner of the delta or the Salt Palace Convention Center block uh he recorded he actually recorded there um John Williams you might remember recorded the the musical uh Main theme if you will for the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics uh with the Boston Pops Orchestra and they all flew into Salt Lake and recorded uh at uh braval Hall so when you if you go back and listen to that Salt Lake City 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics theme that John Williams wrote and or composed and conducted for the recording that was actually recorded in Salt Lake City um he also in his letter wrote that he greatly admired former Utah Symphony conductor Maurice bravel who's you know the hall is named after and uh said both as a person and artist uh he was an amazing man uh braval Hall he concludes with its elegant design and Splendid Acoustics uh said it's an iconic landmark and all citizens can and should be proud of it it must be preserved for future generations to enjoy so um Utah Symphony uh musicians and and leaders of the Symphony of course have called on local leaders preserve the building as well and uh the symphony holds uh events celebrating legendary composers on a regular basis there and uh they pointed out when they released the letter from John Williams today that uh Williams was actually um honored there his music was honored there just a couple of weeks ago at a performance so um Sal Lake County hasn't finalized a plan yet for these two blocks east of the Delta Center and uh and that does include the house convention center block also the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art and uh they have though reached an agreement to quote Revitalize downtown uh which is going to include uh a minor sales tax increase for all Salt Lake County and Salt Lake City residents about 0.5 uh perent increase in sales tax and there will be some rezoning debates on this too but um interesting to see uh whenever Utah gets mentioned or remembered by someone is famous or legendary as the Deseret News apply says as composer John Williams so we'll be back wrongful termination of a coach uh but then of course there are the details University saying that this is a matter of you know improperly uh following not following the rules when it comes to proper way to handle um certain issues that might pop up and how they should be investigated um yeah uh Anderson has responded to the news that his firing is official with the actual paperwork being filed at this point it was a 70-page response to Anderson's termination and um Anderson's attorney kind of uh leaked that out on social media and uh said you know of course he's still saying that this is you know that the University made a mistake and uh it words like uh USU attempting to quote manufacture grounds to avoid paying the buyout um sham investigation um actions taken in the spring of 2023 at
