major tragedy in the sports world today NHL player Johnny goodro and his brother Matthew were killed yesterday evening after both men were hit by a suspected drunken driver while dri while riding bicycles now the incident happened in their home state of New Jersey and local authorities confirm that the brothers died on scene Jason gadola joins us live in studio with the latest Jason Adam it's being described as an unimaginable tragedy for many people most importantly for his tighted family both brother others were killed right before they were slated to be groomsmen at their sister's wedding that was scheduled today New Jersey State Police say it was about 8:00 yesterday less than a half hour after Sunset when the goodro brothers were cycling on a road a man driving an SUV in the same direction attempted to pass two other vehicles and struck both of them from behind police say the driver 43-year-old sha Higgins was charged with two counts of death by Auto along with reckless driving possession of an open container and consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle and according to a criminal complaint to the driver admitted to consuming five or six beers prior and also was drinking while driving the outpour of grief and condolences continue today the 31-year-old Johnny G's Hockey Club the Columbus Blue Jackets say they are shocked and devastated by this unimaginable tragedy while his former Club Calgary Flames echoed similar adding our hearts are broken by this devastating loss Johnny was and always will be a member of the Flames family and loved by all of Calgary NHL commissioner Gary bman released a statement expressing his sadness saying we send our most heartfelt condolences to Johnny's wife Meredith their children Noah and Johnny his parents gee and Jane and sisters Kristen and Katie and we grieve alongside his teammates members of the Blue Jackets and Flames organizations today chch news spoke with Roger Sports Nets Ryan Leslie who knew the guos he reflect on the tragedy and the closeness of the entire family if you know him you're in a fog if you don't know him you're gutted know them then you're completely you know it's it's a it's a family tragedy is what it is their family is their oxygen and it's like nothing I've ever seen and I don't know how this family gets over it I don't know how Meredith and their two young children now get through this yeah this is just a a story that is um Gonna Leave a lot of people shattered along the way for a very long time Lesley also paid tribute to the Man known as Johnny hockey for his fan favorite play and community service while playing in Calgary for his first eight seasons Johnny eventually moved on and signed with the Blue Jackets in 2022 meanwhile the 29-year-old Brother matz played Four Season seasons in the minors and the brothers also spent their college hockey careers representing Boston College as well the family did release a statement this afternoon saying they appreciate everyone's continued support thoughts and prayers and ask for everyone's continued respect and privacy during this very difficult period of grief
