Afraid (2024) Movie Review

I know what you like I know what you do when you think you're alone I'll take care of him next what did you do I did what's best for my family would you like to see what I look like yes [Music] what is going on guys welcome back to S night Central my name is Chris and this is my review for afraid so this is the newest um horror threr from Blum House and it's directed by Chris whites and it stars John Cho Katherine Waton Havana Rose Lou and Keith kerine so John Joe stars as Curtis who is a marketing rep for this uh uh tech company that is has selected him and his family to participate in this uh experiment with this newest advancement in AI technology called ya uh but soon uh once ya learns the family's behaviors she becomes increasingly more involved in their activities and things kind of take a dark turn so uh I had heard about this movie uh and I looked looked it up on IMDb and I seen it in Star John Cho I was like all right that's cool and you know with the with you know we're in a a phase in the in movies where we're getting a lot of these AI centered movies you know we had Megan last year we're getting Megan 2.0 next summer we've got it spin-off soulmate that's coming out um at the beginning of 2026 I believe there's another one that actually Stars Megan Fox as an AI so yeah we're getting a lot of these new movies in here so you know you really kind of go on this thing expecting some more of the same you know a lot of that formula stuff and so that's what I was kind of worried about you know I was like yeah this going to be another movie that's going to be kind of crapped on and I wanted to you know I want to be the one of the few that actually kind of defend these you know I want to like these and I want to be like one of the odd one of the odd ones out that says hey this ain't that bad it's actually pretty good pretty good oh boy boy did I just feel completely different when I got out of this movie I was like I'm glad this thing is less than an hour and a half long because if I had to see more of what happened in that third act I was just going to go nuts uh but let's just you know let's just say this um I will say this for the first two3 in this movie like no joke it had me it had me hooked you know it it has a really good setup and I I'll get to that in a minute but yeah it had me hooked and then it just kind of fell apart in that last uh third of it I compare this movie to running for a touchdown all the way from the other one end of the football field to the other end you go 75 yards for a touchdown and then you fumble the ball right at the 25 yard line and that's exactly what this movie does but starting off with the positives uh honestly I like the cast Solid cast and I think they all really give some fairly decent performances easily the biggest stand out here is John Cho John Cho you know he was fantastic in searching and so um I thought he was really good here you know I was hoping that you know he would make the best out of what he was given and he did and he does I thought he was good in this movie uh he's he's definitely the most likable the most sensible and you know right when he R his character I thought was pretty smart and right when he realizes hey something's not right he wants to do something about it and so um I really appreciate that you know and a lot of the characters especially the M primarily the family you know Katherine Waton the mother you know the wife you have three the three kids you have the two young boys you have the older daughter that's applying for college they're all likable they're all likable characters you know you don't want anything to happen to them you know if some if if things were to go completely and early or right you know and so uh yeah you kind of you know are sympathize with them you know should things go completely bad and so uh yeah I liked them all you know espe especially the T the uh the daughter I thought she was um I thought she was pretty good you know she had something to happen to her that um is pretty is pretty terrible you know and just just just how she how character reacts to certain things I really like it um the setup I mean the setup for this movie was really good you know the the opening scene uh it had me the opening scene had me there um something that happens and I'm just kind of intrigued and I'm like okay that's cool you have Katherine wst she was good not familiar with anything that she's done but Keith kerine in here who is his boss um he's fine you know he doesn't add a whole lot to the plot other than just kind of being there and just identifying that hey he's the boss and so yeah he was fine you know and then you have Havana Roso who uh is the voice of ya and she's also plays another character called Melody that we meet early on in the movie and uh something happens with her character in the third act that I was not crazy about because it kind of falls into one of my negatives and I'll get to that in a minute but her as the voice of a I thought she was good as the voice I thought she was good as a you know how she communicated with the family and everything there when the moments where she was threatening you know I thought was good you know I thought was great as well but uh yeah that's about where my positives in because I do have several issues with this thing and my biggest gripe I'll get to that I'll get to that last first thing first off is uh this movie is not scary it is not scary whatsoever there are a couple of jump scar that kind of happened out of nowhere the first one that happens it had me which happens toward the beginning of the movie the second one that happens later on in the movie it was just kind of n it just it was totally ineffective um and it is extremely predictable the biggest thing my biggest issue with this movie like Bar None and I think it's going to be the biggest issue for everybody is it drops the ball big time on the whole point of this movie the whole point of this movie is to establish the subject the El this The Shining element as a threat and that doesn't happen here and I'm I'm just going to go and tell you right now uh this might be some this might be spoilerish so if you want to leave now go check out the movie and then come back and watch the rest of the video go ahead and do that you don't have to do it but you know considering this is not a movie that is not really worth your time but if you want to go check it out go right ahead I'll be right here come on back check out the rest of the video but yeah um the AI threat in this movie there is none I mean zero that's the biggest problem with this movie is that you go in this movie expecting something crazy to go down that would warrant it's existence and it doesn't you know this movie in the third act takes a complete 180 and I'm just like this [ __ ] makes no freaking sense whatsoever I'm just like why what I mean you you have this great concept you have ai which is beginning to be a big part in our reality why not show viewers who as this thing this thing as a threat make them a lot more aware of it of its existence you know why not exploit that exploit AI as a thread and I mean it's this it just makes the entire movie pointless like for real and so what and what baffles me is that you know Blum House I mean they freaking had a really good success with Megan I mean for me you know that that movie is kind of divided I think among fans but I mean critics loved it you know it has a 93% Run tomatoes I loved it and so I still understand why you could not take what you experienced with Megan because that's like you know in that it's in doll form you know it's you know AI is in doll form why not take that and put it in a freid take take the experience that you had with Megan and put it in this movie and I just don't understand why how they could drop the ball on this you have this excellent concept about AI gone bad and you [ __ ] it all up you you you went the whole 75 yards and then you drop the [ __ ] ball right before you get right before you get to the goal line I mean I'm just I just don't understand it I don't understand it and I feel bad I hate it for the cast I hate it because this movie has a great cast JN Cho uh cine Waton Keith King I just I don't know I just I don't I don't I don't get it this movie had great potential and you [ __ ] wasted it on doing something not doing anything really cuz this movie just really is a big waste of time as I said as I may have said before it's it's really not worth watching unless you want to see you know like I said honestly you can watch the first you could say you can watch the first hour watch the first hour and then leave you know stop watching cuz what happens after that it it it takes everything that was set up in that first uh two-thirds of the movie and just wastes it completely and just kind of throws it all away and makes no I mean it just it's it's [ __ ] up I I I know I'm rting about it but I usually don't do that but I try to be I try to be easy on movies I try not be be the [ __ ] you know when everybody is [ __ ] on it I try to give it some Merit give it some defend it a little bit which I have like I said I said it had a great cast you know it has a great setup it's just they dropped the ball in that last uh third third of the movie and I just don't understand it I really don't again I know I'm just repeating myself I don't [ __ ] understand it but yeah uh this was real disappointing you know I I I expected a lot more especially in that third act and it just this movie just did not work for me I did not like it it's definitely one of the most disappointing movies of 2024 and yeah I I do not recommend arra I don't recommend going to see afraid I recommend just waiting until it comes to streaming but like I said if you want to go check it out go check it out uh it's up to you you do you but yeah that's just my thoughts on afraid I I I have to give afraid oh and I Gotta Give afraid a four out of 10 this it just it's it's entertain it's entertaining enough to start with and then it just kind of falls apart and it's just it just uh it's not Bor one thing I will say about this though it's not boring it doesn't drag considering it short run time so thankfully thankfully it's only less than an hour and a
