Greg Maddox Greg Maddox Greg Maddox all of a sudden things on the north side of Chicago looking a whole lot brighter helps win shutout guy's a winner period Greg Matic four straight Cy Young Awards oh what a play a miraculous grab is he the master of Emily movement but the master of changing speeds he is the best folks he is the best uh yes he is the best Greg Maddox Greg what's going on buddy good thank you thanks for having me thanks for joining us this is awesome so when you come back to Cooperstown how different is it now than the first couple times well the first time you're really nervous and you know you got so many responsibilities you have to take care of and uh you're you know a little scared to give your speech and and you're walking into the hotel here with all the guys you idolized growing up I mean uh you know for me it was the Reds and I was lucky enough when I first walked into the restaurant downstairs I saw Tom Seaver I saw Johnny Bench wow and it was pretty cool for me pretty special and you'd met them along the way when you were playing I'm sure right no not really I never really ran into them you know along the way uh but you know it's uh you don't really feel like you belong you know it's all new you're like a rookie again and uh uh but you know after a few years when you come back it's you come back to have a good time you know when did you um develop such accuracy you're pinpoint control and how did you do it well uh I worked on it every day really I didn't really it was never fully developed you were always working on it you know I think uh just had the attitude to try to get a little bit better a little more consistent each time out and uh you know never stopped never stopped it lasted for you know a long time well we're watching you in the Cub uniform throw some pitches I face you only in spring training I tell you this every time I see you you drill me in my knee but people don't realize how hard you threw well it wasn't like I got hit by some little soft change up you were mid 90s thrower and you were still still accurate enough to do all you did I threw you know hard enough when I was younger to get drafted you know like everybody else but uh you know I learned it was all about changing speeds movement location thrown hard gets you drafted but it it it it doesn't win ball games you have to be able to execute and locate and change speeds to win games so we've got two guys going in the Hall of Fame Scott Roland and Fred McGriff uh you played against Scott you didn't play with him so I'm going to ask you about him first and then we'll talk a little longer on Fred but when you first watch Scott Roland or when you participated against him what stood out well he was a good hitter I mean that's what stood out he was in the middle of the Phillies lineup and I mean you had to be very careful with him and you had to make sure you got the guys out in front of them because the last thing you want to do was face some of the guys on base so and you knew who was hitting after him because you know you got to pick your fights out there sometimes and uh you know you got to get 27 outs and it you know it doesn't have to be all nine guys you know you can kind of pick and choose and and you know Scott was definitely the hitter in that lineup that uh you know you didn't really want to face someone unless you know there was nobody on base maybe one or two outs yeah meant something to hit in the middle of the order I know today they hit second a lot of guys the middle order guy but it meant something Fred McGriff and the reason I go there it meant something when he went to the Braves I was with the Orioles and everybody was trying to trade for Fred and it was like you get Fred McGriff you got a shot yeah I'm wondering your first impressions of him you probably faced him before he was your teammate yeah well I knew facing them numerous times before he came to Atlanta and uh uh you know we needed help scoring runs and you know obviously I'm sure the story's been said over and over again the Press Box caught on fire and you know Freddie hit one on the ninth to tie it and hit one in the 11th to win it and you know he made a big first impression on us and uh you know good guy in the clubhouse as well super good guy to be a teammate with and you know he's he's been a power hitter his whole life I mean big RBI guy and he he got it done yeah no I he was a big part of that brave the last question on that do you remember that time when it was going on that you when you started hearing you guys might get him you know you hear so much stuff in baseball all the time when you hear something you kind of don't really listen to it you know and then you find out it happens and everybody's like okay here we go let's go we got a guy that's going to help us win and uh you know we were always it seemed like our front office was always really good at us being really good to start the season and always adding a piece during the season to make us just a little bit better yeah good stuff good stuff thank you man awesome you always had something here too all right Mr Greg Maddox love this
