Brexit Immigration Plan Achieved Opposite Results

hi my name is Phil I'd like talk about politics and in this video I'd like to discuss the latest data shown how the conservatives post brexit immigration system has failed to do what is intended in fact it's sort of done the reverse the entire system was set up in order to force British workers into Lowa jobs and attract skilled workers from around the world but the latest figures showed that it has not done this as the UK is struggling to attract High wage foreigners but before we get into those figures let's take a look at how pretty Patel's point-based immigration system worked now the idea was that although we would make it harder for European workers to work in the UK we'd make it easier for workers around the rest of the world to do so granted that's not quite what the farage supporting brex teers had in mind replacing mostly white European workers with more workers from Africa and Asia but that was how our post brexit immigration system was set up and that's why that's what's happened it's also what the tourist claimed it would do in the conservative Manifesto from 2019 which gave them their mandate for brexit they said that people should come into this country based on the skills they had not where they come from so if any anti-immigration supporters voted conservative in 2019 they weren't voting for Less immigration just less immigration into low paid jobs not that they got that either cuz if you have a system which makes it harder to have immigrants working low paid jobs but easier to hire them for well-paid jobs well who does the low paid jobs that's right British workers and the system sort of did that it wasn't just rhetoric the way the system works it's actually very easy to get the points required if you're a graduate and the jobs you're applying for in the UK paves above a certain level in fact you to get the points needed it's all you really need is a job that pays a little bit of above the average for the UK and you've got a graduate degree wherever in the world you are you can easily get a job in the UK there's no barriers with our immigration system so although the immigration system gives a show of being restrictive that's what all the rhetoric was about as far as the actual nuts and bolts of it went workers from Africa and Asia had had never had an easier time coming to work in the UK but it hasn't worked quite as the conservatives uh you know explained it because they were suggesting we're going to restrict immigrants coming in and doing loway jobs and make it easier for immigrants to come in and do high paid jobs but the opposite sort of happened because on the one end we did end up with lots of Migrant workers in low paay jobs even though the system is set up to avoid it and the reason for that is because it turns out there wasn't this massive cue of British workers to do these jobs after all once you bottle next the supply of foreign workers but because these jobs are so vital this is the the Mad thing about it because ironically lower paid jobs are some of the more vital jobs it was really important to fill those roles so what the Tes did was create exceptions to the rules with their shortage occupation list which just got bigger and bigger and bigger it's a list of jobs where it wasn't strictly necessary to get the points needed If an employer couldn't find someone domestically because the shortages were so severe but also at the well-paid end even though the immigration system now makes it much easier to apply for a work visa in Britain for skilled workers from anywhere outside Europe we haven't been getting enough interest not enough of those workers want to come here a report shows that of the 10 largest Western economies only Spain has a smaller proportion of high wage migrant Workforce and the same reports suggest that although there are a lot of people around the world who are attracted to working in the UK it's not those High wage workers it's not the the sort of workers the previous government envisaged so yet again the actual data shows that the thinking behind brexit simply hasn't aligned with reality the tourist pulled us out of the single Market in order to chase after better trade around the rest of the world a flawed idea to begin with because you know money isn't evenly distributed around the world a lot of it's concentrated in Europe so the the rest of the world sort of didn't have enough money to compensate for lost EU trade but it was especially damaging because we exited the single Market at just the time that covid was persuading the rest of the world that actually Global Supply chains are very vulnerable at times and maybe trade should take place with your neighbors the result is we've not seen a boost in global trade since brexit and certainly nothing to compensate for the slump in European trade and now we can see that their notion of how their precious Australia style immigration system as they called it would work has done the opposite and it means we now struggle to fill High skill jobs which are essential to grow the economy it's now Labor's problem to solve of course but it's it's a problem for the entire country the conservatives failed to boost the development of these skills in our domestic Workforce because people say well we should just we should just train more of our own people to do these jobs but we didn't we didn't do that so there for if you don't if you don't invest in education of the domestic Workforce you necessitate a Reliance on immigration then they thought that by making it easier for high-skilled workers from all over the world to work in the UK they could just compensate for their lack of an education strategy by importing skilled workers from abroad but not enough want to come here I'm not quite sure why maybe it's that those with strong skills and the ability to pick and choose where they work are not all that key on coming to a country where the mainstream media gives the impression that we have um that we have a massive problem with racism and xenophobia in this country I also can't imagine that the recent riots will have helped our image either obviously in contrast to the tourist labor are very keen on properly resourced in education they did it last time they're in government showing every sign of doing it again but it's a very long-term policy it takes time you've got to persuade people first of to study shortage skills so you need like a government initiative to do that then you need the time it takes to learn those qualifications then you need even more time a lot more time to develop those skills in the workplace to the point where you can be considered highly skilled so this idea of labors of of training more people here in the UK in order to reduce our Reliance on immigration sure that works in the long term you're talking about 20 years and that's if you get off to running start it's not something that'll even have taken it's not something you'll have achieved even by the the next election the ideas behind brexit continue to get headaches smashing their heads into the walls of reality it's one reason why labor are so desperate for a mutual recognition of qualifications agreement with the EU but in the meantime this is just one more break on our capacity to boost economic growth you know getting investment for high value projects that's one thing that can certainly create jobs but you need the people to be able to do those jobs as well finally just a reminder if you are sufficiently tired of brexit that you'd like to take part in this year's rejoin March it's on September the 28th in London I'll put a link in the description below if I forget remind me but there we are those are my thoughts if you
