Saquon Barkley Stars, Jordan Love Injured as Packers Rue Missed Chances

[Music] this is the upback QB daily you are listening to the review of the Green Bay Packers in the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil let's get into [Music] it well what a way to kick off the season uh the first two games have just been extraordinary to watch it was an attacking Fest in in Brazil on a field that was very slippery bad conditions that wasn't quite up to scratch but it added to the entertainment value I'm not sure the Packers fans or the organization are thrilled about it given that there was a knee injury to Jordan love I'm not sure it was fied conditions that contributed to that but uh there have been less weird conspiracy theories going around in the past look 3 to six weeks let's start there that's the diagnosis for Jordan love sprained to MCL it's not an ACL thank goodness but 3 to six weeks with your starting quarterback who've just paid 200 $2 million that is a significant chunk and a bad way to start the year especially when you start it with a loss so it's not as bad as first feared but it is a significant impact on the Packers and all of a sudden there is a question mark over their season because how many games can they win with a backup quarterback in place will that be Malik Willis or will they sign someone else who knows that'll all unfold over the next couple of days but they brought in Willis very very late after releasing um their backup QBs after the preseason so he hasn't had much time to learn this offense he's had a patchy career so far in his two years in the league with Tennessee so what happens there what happens with the Packers but let's talk about the game itself um because we'll get to the Jordan love situation more on the main show I'm sure this week and how that affects the Packers uh 34 to 29 Eagles win and a big win a really strong way to start the season for them they weren't perfect Jaylen Herz uh fumbled the ball twice both from snaps and he had two bad interceptions as well but he did do some good things and they had a couple of reasons on offense well one main reason that the game exploded in their Direction and that was saquon Barkley now I doubted the impact that Barkley would make in the offseason I thought he'd be fine I didn't think he would be this good straight away three touchdowns um 132 scrimmage yards and he was just unbelievable he looked so quick he looked so agile uh so strong just he couldn't have played a better first game could not have played a better first game so impactful three scores um fantasy owners all around the world going crazy for saquon and I mean the Giants it's just just more salt into the wound isn't it because they didn't have an o line that could help him produce this and he certainly wasn't fit like this in the last two years I mean it's one game we know that but goodness me what a way to start it so um as for Herz he was 20 of 34 for 278 two and two as I mentioned he connected with AJ Brown a bit five receptions about 119 yards uh and a TD which was a 70 plus yarder so that contributed to his stats dvon Smith was okay um they weren't they weren't a well oiled machine on offense um they had their chances on defense as well there was a there was a pick or two that they could have made that they could have returned for a pick six but didn't happen but a player that did stand out on the defense was Zack Bourne he had two sacks 15 tackles and a pass batted down as well so they have some they have some elements uh of their game that were looking good but the the hurt performance was one that was up and down 278 yards 20 of 34 uh there were times where he just made bad misses um he didn't do a heck of a lot with his legs he carried the ball 13 times for 33 yards the tush pushes back so we've seen that again uh that's not going anywhere but it was interesting to see the lack of connection with Cam Jurgens the new center um Jason Kelce obviously retired so now they're trying to I guess Elevate that chemistry find that chemistry between those two and there were two fumbled snaps which was which was bad the first one uh Herz wasn't even ready for it he wasn't even ready he was still doing his count uh looking in the opposite direction the ball hits him in the chest so a few things to work through there but as for the Packers performance um Jordan love threw at 50% and he threw a pick and he should have thrown another one um that was dropped 260 yards for him um he didn't rush at all and then obviously ends with the knee injury Josh Jacobs was the addition to their team in the off season he started really slowly he battled behind the this o line and I think the o line was one of the reasons they lost now let's get into the reasons that this team the Packers team um couldn't find chemistry the first was the o line it was poor they couldn't create any space for Josh Jacobs in the first half they did in the second half but the main reason the o line struggled was their penalties they gave away 10 penalties uh or the team did for 70 plus yards but most of them came in the first quarter and most of them were on the o line and they were just needless needless penalty so they they haven't figured that out yet uh it's only week one but that did hurt them they couldn't convert in the Red Zone one of four in the red zone and a couple of misses a couple of drops um Christian Watson and uh davien Wicks he had a bad day he had a couple of drops that he really should have taken and ended up with no yards on a few targets so it was the drops um it was the lack of red zone conversion it was the penalties um and they also tried to add a new kicker the undrafted free agent Bren nerson who they signed after getting rid of Anders Carlson their draft pick from last year who had a patchy year uh and narvis missed a 43 yd field goal which you know turned out to be quite important in the scheme of the game because it just made things so much harder um for the Packers to get back into it late and then obviously Malik Willis comes on at the end for the last play for the Hail Mary because Love's been injured so it's a night that the Packers leave with more questions than they do answers not just the love injury but also um okay what's this o line look like how is the chemistry of the receivers working outside of Jaden Reed who was unbelievably good um two more more touchdowns for him 138 yards catching and 33 yards on the ground he had one Jet Sweep that he took through for a touchdown so he was unbelievable Ean Emanuel Wilson the backup uh running back that Hy mentioned on the main show last week he actually showed a little bit as well um as a backup to Jacobs when it wasn't working for him but yeah B big questions here big questions for um the Packers they got a pick from Xavier mckin their offseason recruit from the Giants he looked good Jer Alexander got a pick as well from a bad throw from Herz but he got burnt by AJ Brown a few times so AJ Brown certainly had the best of that matchup um it's a game where coming out of it it's hard to know where they both sit really because it was such an attacking game um there were a fair few errors it was weird conditions a weird way to start being in the southern hemisphere you know players slipping over injury to the quarterback of the Packers at the end um Herz wasn't at his best I just don't know I mean it's a win for the Packers and it's a good start sorry it's a win for the I should say and a good start but whether you'd be entirely convinced outside of seon Barkley and maybe AJ Brown I'm not sure but anyway they'll take that um and we'll see we'll unpack the rest of this week with Jordan love three to six weeks MCL um mik Willis what can Malik Willis do can they hold on let's have a look at the Green Bay uh fixture coming up because I mean that that'll be instructive as to you know whether they can hold on for the season because that's that's the question already the question is can they win enough games in this next let's say four- we period to stay competitive so they've got they're 0 and one they've got the Colts at home next week that's tough all of a sudden without your starting QB then they got the Titans away so Willis against the Titans potentially you'd think I mean that's a 50/50 now but they could win that one so let's say they're one and two after that then they got the Vikings at home um that's not that easy now and then they got the Rams away so that's the next four weeks it's it's not the hardest fixture if Jordan loves there but without him it makes it a whole lot more difficult but of course now it's time for the upback QB stubby Club MVP votes uh now it's never an easy job but I'll go through these we do 54 321 for those who are new to it uh we'll start with the one Jaylen Herz um I'm giving one now I agonized about this because he had you know three three turnovers um one of which was probably a center's fault two which were picks one of them bad um but when it mattered late he did control a seven-minute drive that helped them seal the game and he did make two touchdown passes and he did hit his receivers at times when it mattered as the game went on he got more chemistry as the game went on so only one for Jaylen Herz um out of that two for AJ Brown five receptions 119 yards and a big touchdown he was very good when it mattered Zack Bourne um line backer from the Eagles now not a name that is normally Herald heralded but as I said before 15 tackles two sacks and a pass batted down he was big when it mattered and he he had the sack to end the game after a big big night so three votes for him four votes for Jaden Reed the only Packer who gets votes for me today he was Sensational um as I said 138 yards in a TD plus that 33 yard TD on the ground so he scored twice and seon Barkley I can't go past that five votes he was the best player in the game by a mile 13 2 yards and three scores on his debut so he kicks off the Outback ubb stubby Club MVP award uh very very well all right we'll see you all tomorrow
