week the Phillies have a starting pitcher go seven scoreless Innings last time it was arinola against the Houston Astros this time around it was Zach wheeler doing his thing against the Atlanta Braves in a win that put the Phillies back up to six games over the Braves in the NL East and you had some big hits from amundo Sosa to back it up as long as another long ball from Trey Turner is 15th of the season and all in all a very emotional and inspiring win for the Phils the defense was incredible uh throughout this ball game tonight really for both ball clubs and we'll highlight that in our three big things we'll also take a look at the Phillies potentially doing uh really accomplishing the goal that we set out for them before this series started when the home stand began we talked about that Houston Astros series and the Phillies being able to go out there and getting two at least two of the three victories which they did uh unfortunately Taiwan Walker had to pitch that third game but Phillies won two out of three then we set the bar for them to at least be able to win three out of four against the Atlanta Braves and right now they look like they are set up to do that with taking the two games to one series lead before the pivotal game four tomorrow night for a national audience on ESPN let's break it all down right now with three big things as we do each and every week before we do that for the people for the people listening on the podcast that might sound a little bit different for the people watching I know a lot of you guys a lot of you guys were really rooting for the carport okay not a carport we have upgraded to my cousin's uh my cousin-in-law is office so I feel like we're moving up in the world I don't know the people that are in the pictures behind me but I'm sure they're awesome people all right like the people I'm hanging out with we might have kids come running into the room we might have people trying to make faces that's why there are no windows in the shop that's strategic so you don't see my brother-in-law trying to flash me as I'm doing this all right all right now we're on the same page let's get into three big things number one or excuse me number three we got to talk about the defense in tonight's ball game all right for the kids at home listen to this defense wins championships okay defense wins championships and it was one of the things that really stuck out to me throughout this game for both teams there were a couple wtps As I like to call them warning track power situations and some other situations that were even more than warning track power over thewall power but brought back by the power of Defense the power of the glove no cow died in vain to make those mths tonight as Johan roas and Harris were all over the place tonight couple of different warning track power instances there second inning second inning JT real Muto steps up to the plate hits a long fly Ball Deep center field Harris goes back on it and tracks it beautifully to come down with it to Rob uh uh JT Ruto of extra bases not a home run but robs JT Ruto of extra bases in that situation and absolutely looked like he was a gazelle running out there for the uh for the uh Braves uh to see Harris go out there and make that play was let you know the the tone that was going to be set for the rest of the night sure enough then in the third inning Harper puts one out left field to laurano he tracks it down for another warning track power fly out just a deep flyball fourth inning Weston Wilson steps into one puts that one right on the warning track into right field and that one just dies on the track I don't know what the uh what the air pressure was out there in C Bank Park tonight but them balls were just dying at the last second Johan roas then in the sixth inning came up with an incredible play to Rob Matt Olson for what would have been what his third home run of the series already fourth home run of the series and West uh Johan Ras went up there and just timed it perfectly reached up didn't even have to leave his leave his feet the track the ball to deep center field perfectly to take that home run away from Matt Olsen and then in the seventh inning that's when Harris came up with the The Catch of the game really and that robbed uh Austin of his third hit of The Game and his first home run of the game and yeah I know I take I I give a lot of flak to Austin Hayes for what he's done as a philly and his inability to hit right-handed pitching then he goes out there and gets the double against Justin berlander and then he's a little bit more at home while facing Max freed tonight the left-hander able to get a two hits off of him and it was also almost able to get that long ball there in the seventh inning but Harris had other plans and I do appreciate the sportsmanship of Austin Hayes tipping his C to Michael Harris out there in center field uh and then the eighth inning Bryce Harper had a couple of these I mentioned the one in the third inning that he just gave it a great ride that a warning track in left putting Lano up against the wall well then in the eighth inning he has another one first off there's one that just died at the track that should have been caught by laurano but I don't know what he was doing uh I guess he just lost it somehow the ball almost fell into Fair territory it did not it ended up being a foul out and then Bryce Harper rope one to right field that died on the warning track but uh again the defense was just on point tracking fly balls out there in the Outfield that's number three number two I I I really wish I could just split and just skip over two and give a one and a one a but we gota we got to maintain maintain on this Ed Mundo Sosa going out there tonight and look when you think about Mundo so's 2024 season you think about the month and a half that he hit well over 300 for Trey Turner while Trey Turner was on the menend and how he really helped this team keep a great Pace in their hot start to this season and then Ed Mundo Sosa gets a start tonight against a left-handed pitching Max freed Bryson Stott sits on the bench and they have Sosa go out there Sosa goes out in that uh third inning or fourth inning of tonight's ball where are my game notes here they are uh in that third inning and M Sosa leads off against Max freed scoreless ball game he goes up there and gets a hanging slider and absolutely tattoos that baseball 450 feet to left center field to give the Phillies the one- nothing lead but that's not all after Trey Turner went up there in the sixth inning to grabb the Phillies a two nothing lead with his 15th home run of the Season he was down in that count by the way 02 and then fought back to nine pitches before he got the one that he could drive 388 ft out of the park Sosa stepped up to the plate again in the seven inning Philly's up to you know the the Braves lineup can explode at any minute you know that any minute you can get a bullpen Army even though the Phillies Bullpen has been great as of late a bullpen arm can come in and just not have the right stuff tonight Jeff Hoffman certainly did uh Carlos EST stez obviously did but you never know who could come in there with the dead arm and give up the big hit so you need the insurance runs against this Braves lineup even they even though they have all the injuries throughout the season and then Mundo Sosa steps up there after Weston Wilson works a out walk and Sosa puts one deep into right center field and you see this ball just carry and carry and carry and Weston Wilson once again to all the young kids out there Weston Wilson executed this perfectly with one out he's on first base after the walk he watches the ball goes over the right fielder he's able to bust it around second base and he scores from first on that double it was a bang bang play at home and he just made the right slide right time and got that left hand in there to make sure the Phillies got their third run of the ball game so great job by Weston Wilson round of the bases there real heads up base running by him and also we knock him when he's not right but Dusty Waton was 100% right to send Weston Wilson in that situation for the Phillies Third Run of the game but again it came courtesy of edmundo Sosa stepping up in a big moment and driving in the Philly's Third Run of the game he drove in the first run with his home run his seventh of the season and then came in the clutch again to make sure the Phillies had another insurance run by the close of that seventh inning uh after that if he's number two you know who number one is Zack Wheeler a guy trying hard to make his case to be the Sai Young Award winner for the national league he goes out there tonight and absolutely dominated and tracking his strikeouts he had seven strikeouts tonight fast ball sweeper cutter sweeper Sinker sweeper curveball you got fast balls you got two seamers sweepers and curve but just punching out guys with whatever he needed in whichever it bat and he did it throughout the night and there were a lot of instances where he took advantage Marcelo Zuna especially who he struck out twice once on the fast ball that was up in the zone and then once on a sweeper that was just dying outside the zone that he got him to chase on Zach really just had it dialed up tonight and I know we talked about this a little bit before the brave series about how this is the type of playoff atmosphere you want the Phillies to be playing in this is the type of attitude this is the type Vibe you feel when you go down to Citizens Bank Park and that's the type of vibe you feel come through the television in a game like this nationally televised game you have John Smoltz in the booth broadcasting the game and you know he just wants to give every elce of credit to the Braves and he possibly can but the Phillies robbed him of that tonight fortunately and Zack Wheeler absolutely pitched like he understood the moment and not that I expected anything less from Zack Wheeler but seeing him go out there and really I mean he did outpick pitch Aaron Nola not that it's a competition between the two but you're talking about seven scoreless Innings from both pitchers this particular instance yeah had Nola go out there seven scoreless Innings four hits six strikeouts one walk against the Astros walking a guy what a bum and then you have Zack Wheeler going out there tonight and just laying it down with seven strikeouts so one more than Nola and did not issue a walk against the Braves tonight and in total used seven less pitches I believe it was than Aaron Noah through his seven scoreless Innings used 96 pitches lowering his ER to 263 on the season absolutely incredible and here's what what else is wild so I mentioned the big hits in the game the big hits in the game obviously come Mondo Sosa Trey Turner uh seeing Wilson get on base great fine wonderful hay had a double but the Phillies had five hits in tonight's ball game and the Phillies only uh they walked four times and that's what they were able to capitalize on the long ball and walks that's what they capitalized and the one run they scored that was not uh a home run obviously wasn't even with a runner in scoring position and tonight they only had three at bats with a runner in scoring position and that was Hayes uh on second with Wilson Roos and schwarber going down unfortunately in that inning but then the Phillies in total had four runners left on base tonight so they just didn't get the big hit in that regard but when it came to the big hit it came courtesy of the solo home run and then a huge double by ad Mondo Sosa but when you think about it five hits nine base runners in total it was a bit of a rough one for the Phils offensively in terms of consistency but when they needed those big hits they got the big hits tonight and all in all when you're not scoring runs you're only scoring three uh while you're in the game you're only scoring two Zack Wheeler just slammed the door every opportunity he get he got uh when we come back we will talk about an honorable mention for this Phillies team tonight and two guys actually for this Phillies team that really came up in the clutch and we'll also get into the injury bug right now for the Phils last night we talked about Ranger Suarez we'll address that just so we talk about it uh we weren't able to last night because the story broke from Rob Thompson by the time we were finished about Ranger Suarez and status and then we'll also talk about Alec bow and Bryce Harper when we come back your locked on Philly uh postcast and a locked on Sports Philadelphia YouTube channel make sure you like And subscribe to lockon your second listen enjoy locked on MLB podcast with host Paul Sully Sullivan he's here daily to provide National expertise with this his trademark humor and also hope you get ready for the MLB postseason once we get through the dog days of summer prepare for the fall classic with Sully who has it all covered every single day on lockon MLB available on YouTube and wherever you get your podcast part of the lock on podcast Network your team every day Alec bone injury-wise let's actually start with Ranger Suarez so last night one of my big concerns after Ranger Suarez only wenton four Innings on 78 pitches in that game last night against the Braves uh little concerning wasn't asked to do much more than what he was asked to do uh in his first start back against the Royals but he comes back out there last night doesn't look his best struggled but got through what he could uh after the game Thompson was asked about it and he said that that was the plan I love when the manager gets an opportunity to address the media before a game and somehow that never comes up as part of the plan like hey what's the plan with Ranger Suarez don't worry about it cool and then after the game oh this is a plan all along why not at least give that the people the heads up hey what's the plan so that way when he gets pulled at 78 pitches after four Innings we're not losing our minds over the idea of Ranger Suarez possibly needing an is St or possibly having to miss a start and then possibly having to have taiw Walker come back and join the rotation don't even put that thought in my head Rob Thompson thank you very much and that was the thought that crossed my mind last night and I know I wasn't alone on that one but all appears to be right with the world where it doesn't appear to be right with the world is Alec bone second straight day out of the Phillies lineup uh he was pulled obviously early in his last game after just three Innings a little issue with the the wrist so now two games in a row and this is just something that the philes are monitoring I would assume this is a day-to-day situation inflammation in his wrist hopefully this is a matter of him just needing a little bit of a break and then he can come back and start being the guy that will hit 400 with runners in scoring position and continue to be the guy leading the national league really all of baseball in doubles again so let's cross our fingers for that we know he's been pressing hopefully this doesn't add to it maybe and I know somebody suggested it the other day in our chat and we will check the chat in the next segment but somebody suggest Ed it with Alec bone that maybe this is a good thing for him step away for a second take a break and then get back to it and get back to mashing doubles in the gaps so something to monitor there with Alec bone and then finally uh I read it via Cory Cory Simon of NBC Sports Philadelphia about Bryce Harper uh dealing with a nagging injury when it comes to his elbow and his wrist Harper said he's not making excuses but it's something that is not crazy but it's there look Bryce Harper's power as we know has been non-existent almost had the home run tonight I've highlighted that but he has not hit a home run since August 9th so that's been a while there obviously for Bryce Harper uh tonight got close uh but batting average wise unfortunately tonight wasn't his night uh for some good oldfashioned hitting uh 0 for four with a strikeout but all in all in the month of August going into tonight he was hitting just over 300 in the month of August so hitting has been there power has not been there unfortunately for Bryce Harper so I I don't know if he needs a little bit more time off we know that Rob Thompson gave him the very emphatic about getting the two nights off two days off back to back um but that was uh the decision of the manager and hitting wise power-wise it doesn't seem like it's helped Bryce Harper uh at least not yet so B Harper Suarez seems to be fine but definitely need to keep an eye on Harper and bom in the final month of the Season uh as far as uh two honorable mentions that I I said uh before the break Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estes Estes excuse me uh Charlie Sheen as he's referred to affectionately in our chat tonight you see two guys go out there after a phenomenal start by uh Zack Wheeler and you know these guys need to slam the door and when we talk about this lineup you can talk about how many different times they just come out there and they just start mashing and the Wes can obviously do a lot of things that the Phillies have been able to do throughout the year which is all of a sudden you blink and they score three runs four runs five runs just like that they have that kind of power there was a couple instances tonight where when that ball was traveling through the air especially on that list I rattled off to you with the wtp balls that were out there warning track power the home run that Roos robbed of Olen that was a situation there in the sixth inning where I thought the Phillies uh were in danger simply because because at that point in the game it was still a 1-1 game in the bottom of the sixth inning that's when Trey Turner hit his solo home run so Olsen starts off that inning excuse me wheeler started off that inning in the six at 75 pitches he sat down Ozuna got on the ground out uh to Second and that was after he was down in the count three 0 fought his way back and got Ozuna the ground out the very next batter was Olen and that's when he flew out to deep center field on a ball that should have gone over the wall had it not been for Johan Roos tracking that perfectly and just being the right amount of height uh that would have tied the game at one and maybe things change after that for Zack Wheeler but he stayed the course then he pitched the seventh inning it was an 87 pitches when he started that one made that a quick inning just nine pitches in the seventh and that's where Jeff Hoffman took the ball to pher shella Maryfield solar got a hit off of him and then he struck out Ozuna on a two- two slider that had him go fishing two strikeouts there in the inning one on marfield on a fast ball for Hoffman and then in the ninth inning you saw uh Carlos who went out there and seemed like he had a little bit of an issue with the mound a little mushy maybe maybe turned an ankle a little bit not anything serious obviously but he stayed in the game and he also got two strikeouts so two innings for your Bullpen arms and Hoffman and EST stez four strikeouts and a total of 23 pitches thrown excuse me 33 pitches thrown uh not bad for two innings of work for your uh I guess eighth and ninth inning guys you'll be relying on for the rest of the season so one month to go right now and the most important thing is the Phillies are up on the Braves six games six games in the NL East again the big concern was man you you lose Braves could be what would they be four games or excuse me one game out two games out they made it happen glad to see it uh we'll look around the rest of the league and just let you know where everybody else is at when we come back we'll also check your comments I want to see what you guys have to say about this Phil victory tonight in the Phillies being six games over the Braves again in the NL back in a second make sure you hit like And subscribe on lockon Sports Philadelphia That's lockon Sports Philadelphia also coming up we'll take a look at what the Phillies and Braves have on tap for game four of this four get into the chat check and see how your wonderful people are feeling about this series and feeling about this win tonight for your Philadelphia Phillies I see it is hopping in the chat Morgan wheeling and Dean hell's yeah John Marinelli shout out baby or shout out baby sorry uh ring the bell their 14th shut out of the SE oh thank you for reminding me John Marinelli I can always count it listen to this Phillies tonight get their 14th shot out that's incredible they actually put up the stat tonight about Nick castiano swinging at the first pitch John I thought of you Nick casianos I I knew he swung at the first pitch most of the time 52% actually sounds low to me if you told me that Nick casano 52% of the time swings at the first pitch I would have said that seems low I would say 75 80% of the time he swings to the first pitch um that seems low 50 2% what does not seem low is that Nick castios swings at the first pitch more than anyone in baseball 52% of the time swing at the first pitch you know what that is that's the highest percentage in baseball now as we highlighted uh did three weeks ago no sorry uh a week ago Nick castios is batting 332 when he swings at the first pitch so that kind of works out uh but yeah John I wanted to make sure I got that in thank you ibh what's going on oh baby wheels and charge hell's yeah ibh felt like a playoff I absolutely felt like a playoff game totally agree with you uh Jonathan boil first time this season the Braves have failed to win a series against the Phillies that is true it's like that's the first time they clinch a non-series loss they worst they could do is split things are looking up already Michael Evans edmundo Jonathan Bole sure they could still split tomorrow but this was a winnable series for both teams and they are now guaranteed to not do so they're guarante oh to oh to lose the series okay Michael Evans Wilson is still a little sh oh thank you yes Michael Evans at the Hot Corner for Weston Wilson good gracious uh there was a play in the early goings of the game it was the second inning yeah Olsen geez Olsen line one hard to Weston Wilson at third base and um he sned it Wester Wilson just flat out sned it it was great great play by him and I was like oh okay all right maybe this will be a better time around the Hot Corner for Weston Wilson unlike the last time where it was the scorching scolding Hot Corner for Weston Wilson maybe he'll actually hold his own and then as soon as you thought that he boted a play in the very next Inning on Aria rcia hit a ball his Direction and he just booted it I didn't even think it was that hard a ball to field but apparently it was for Weston Wilson and RC ended up reaching on that error but all in all look it's going to be a learning process as long as they're keeping his Bat in the lineup at this point and the philes win then I'm happy it's amazing how much that changes your outlook but yeah no either way he needs to improve his defense if they're going to continue to trot him out there at third base even if it's only once in a while uh what else you guys got going on here bam man 100 what's going on uh the bullpen came through huge absolutely glad Weston Wilson decided to play baseball instead of becoming an Olympic runner man that guy is fast I was surprised too B much he how much he flew how well he flew around the excuse me around the bases at that point uh Luis adario uh Hayes was crushing the ball tonight totally robbed of a home run he absolutely was he was facing a lefty he was facing a lefty what do I always break his Stones about what do I always break a Stones about not hitting righties then he gets the double off of uh Justin Verlander who did he do uh Nate what's going on how are you I hope Zach can get the s that would be fantastic uh unlikely with how Chris salea is pitching true April what's up April how are you ring the bell Johnson wall I think my favorite part of this whole game was when they were interviewing schwellenbach and Sosa said eat this Moon shot that when I saw the ball off Sosa's bat I did not think it was I did not think it was 350 I thought it was gonna be like 320 or 450 I thought it was going to be like 425 something like that because Matt olsson's home run over the batter's eye was 450 and that went into Ashburn alley like when I see that ball disappear over the batter's eye in center field on Ashburn alley I think that's that AB absolute moonshot now granted I thought when s hit it it was a moonshot 450 I was a little surprised but I'll take it uh polar Buck I love winning wheeler was solid SOS is a rockar uh and could it be we're back on track fingers crossed uh you beat the brave I said before the series if you at least beat the Braves three out of four times the Phillies aren't just back the Phillies are back to being a World Series favorite that's what they're back to being so that I would agree with you 100% Nate what's going on how are you I think we have enough run support today I think so there you are bam Charlie Sheen was winning sorry I had to winning he drank Tiger Blood he just started chugging Tiger Blood I believe that's an old PLL for some people Evelyn when I first saw the lineup I was questioning it Wilson at third again eeke Willis oh no I mean I when I saw when I saw Wilson the third as well that was pretty Bonkers um but like I said then they fied that ball in the second and like all right and then a botch on the third existential Tyrant existentialism Tyrant uh nothing like watching wheeler dealing Chad Crawford what's up fary do you think Wilson will be in the postseason on the postseason roster yes I do think Wilson will be on the postseason roster JoJo a dub dub the scrubs in I'll take it all right 100th gr we're in for wheels or with the Phillies with the Phillies wait hold on what am I looking at here let's break that down that's something I obviously want to highlight because that's a hell of a milestone in this day and age uh because how long was he with he's 34 now yeah wow 100th career win good for him he's 169 nice on his career 169 nice that's amazing absolutely amazing so good for Zack Wheeler in that regard Chad Crawford fary Bryce hasn't looked himself for a while now wasn't surprised to hear him say he was banged up totally agree he's still hitting though he's still hitting well he's not he's just not hitting for power and of course that's part of the reason you make $330 million uh why would you tell the other team to plan before the game I I don't think that's really that uh that's not abnormal I I've heard plenty of times the the goal is at 75 pitches get him around 75 pitches like something like that I don't think that's abnormal uh Dean what's going on I said going in that a split is bare minimum there you go Dean you and I are on the same page do it tomorrow Phils Dave hello playing through injuries explained a lot of L yeah Graham giddy up Jamie Brave suck Dave hello uh what happened with that ball that dropped between the three of them that was the was that urella who hit that ball um fourth inning orella single to left field that was credited an infield single weirdly enough but but uh drop between Wilson Turner and Hayes Maryfield then got a single yet had first and second with two outs and that's when uh in the fifth inning zacker was able to strike out Solair to be done with that so you love to see it uh everyone in the chat thanks very much uh before I go tomorrow Phillies and Braves back at at 7 o'clock ESPN start time Phillies will go for the series win their first series win against the Atlanta Braves this season and it's their last series against the Atlanta Braves this season so they save the best for last uh like I said tomorrow night you have Aaron Nola getting the start against the guy that has owned the Phillies the young bull Spencer schwellenbach he is five- six on the season with a 372 erra a righty righty match up tomorrow Aaron Nola going for his 13th win of the Season he's third he's 12- six with a 330 erra SP schach the last time he faced the Phillies was back in that series on the 2 22nd of August he went six and two thirs allowing two runs on three hits and issuing just one walk while striking out nine that's the way that one broke down as far as what's going on right now in the National League the Arizona Diamondbacks going into the eighth inning just took an eight oh excuse me just tied it up with the Dodgers 66 going into the eighth inning the Brewers bottom of the ninth inning are leading the Reds in Cincinnati 5 to4 that's the way that's looking right now in the National League thanks for for watching thanks for listening everybody you guys are fantastic as per usual as for
