welcome back to 49ers po game live brought to you by Toyota the teams.com everything dominated by the 49ers 41 total yards the rushing yards they ran over what's supposed to be one of the best defenses in football and with Jordan Mason not Christian mcaffry the Red Zone efficiency they went two for five the penalties they were kind of an issue earlier but then and the big number Dante zero in the turnover column usually when you get zero in the in the no Dre green law and no Huff I mean this defense should go up I want your take on this both going with you first Rod what's the biggest difference you saw I know it's a small sample size but still it's what we have from tonight's game from Sorenson's game plan to what we saw last season from Steve W they they weren't passive waiting for everything to be in front of them they were going to it they were just being much more aggressive I thought the secondary and again they were I don't want to say shaky uh in the beginning of the game but was it the Jets uh second Drive of the game that's where the Jets were converting third down at a third down and you were fearful that something was going to get going with the exception of that I thought the secondary I thought they took the fight to the Jets receivers I thought they took the fight to the Jets offense but I think as a whole you know from front to back the defense was instead of them being reactionary they were a lot more forceful with what they were trying to do and it showed it you know in the sets the Niners defense basically had everything had a fourth down stop multiple three and outs an interception a sack a fum humble and with the exception of the yeah that Jets second Drive um the Niners basically just put the screws to the Jets and they had no answers this might be before we go to Shanahan I think the best again I know it's one game but on paper what we saw tonight that hard grave Collins combination if those two are healthy and can keep can keep going throughout the season I don't think Shanahan's had a one-w punch even since uh theor bugner and arm said back in 19 these two might be better just on girth and visit it alone Dante and they allow Chris ceric to go out and pick the guys that he identifies that plays his style of football in free agency which is why they brought Malle Collins here which is why they brought hardgrave here prior um that's the biggest difference with this defense this year right it's the interior presence it's the strength and the girth of those guys it's the attitude it's the meanness that's what it is setting the edge keeping those linebackers clean and playing downhill let's go back out to Levi Stadium listen into the coach Kyle Shanahan right now um injuries from the game Joan Jennings had an ankle he returned Aaron Banks had a calf contusion um did not that was it Mason ran with a ton of conviction against a really good defense what was your thoughts of his performance uh I thought he runs like he always does I mean when you get him the ball he breaks tackles usually gets more than um we block than we block for um when we had the good Lanes he always hit them and got a bunch but um JP was awesome today happened to Christian uh just the same stuff that was bothering him all week there was a little too much today game time decision um he came in just talking to him about it it was still there um thought it was going be smart to keep him out and glad we did Jordan said after the game that he was told on Friday night he was going to start when did Christian start feeling Ry I never told Jordan he was going to start um told him he had to be ready a bunch but that might have been Bobby or somebody trying to pump him up but uh I knew he was going to have to play a lot uh told him that he was going to have to wasn't going to be like usual um he was going to be a number two back that was split a lot of the time um but now he didn't know he for sure was doing that till today Christian have some sort of setback on Friday is that no he didn't have a setback I mean it was it was on and off throughout the week he was able to practice throughout the week just um it was always bothered him to a degree and um sometimes it goes away sometimes it comes back and uh today was bothered him a little too much to where we didn't feel good about it those situations where if there's any linger over the next several weeks what's that is this is there a concern that this something that is going to linger over the next always I mean it's been lingering last few weeks and but it's getting better and better and hopefully it'll be better next week is it one of those situations where if there's any soreness pregame you you'll air on the side of caution um not any soreness but there was too much soreness George's performance tonight kind of give you some reassurance that you could allow Christian to maybe heal more than uh not really I mean um we always we we feel think very highly at JP um uh when he's been in those situations that's what he's always done and um you know you always want Christian out there um what he brings to the Run game also what he brings to the pass game so uh it's huge to have Christian but um but not expensive losing him for more games what what went on with this team this summer The Hold outs and then obviously your shooting and so much going on at the last few weeks did you ever worry about the F of the team did you always understand this is what could be possible only for yeah I mean our I mean I'm with our team every day so I know there's lots of new and stuff with hold outs and things like that and winter people coming back but our guys have been awesome in practice they've been very focused you know anytime guys don't get a lot of practice in you know I wish we could have more so I wanted to mesh more with those guys who just got here this week but being able to get four practices in with those guys having the extra day um things like that was great for them um still got a long way to go today by no means was perfect and there were some parts that were sloppy but just overall all three phases um played really well together um being able to score there at the end of the half and with the field goal run the clock out score the opening drive of the third quarter our defense getting a two turnovers our kicker going six for six being able to have 37 runs um I look at that as a complete team goal that we tried to do so I was real happy with just the team overall think TR I'm sorry just Tren and I you look to you um I mean they they seemed fine I mean I'm sure we'll see some things when we watch the tape um but I mean not nothing that cost us what do you think about the defense particularly against the run I mean you guys had some changes over the offseason on that side of the ball some injuries obviously seemed like a strong person impression yeah I was really happy watching the D from the sidelines I mean thought they were running and hitting um that's the thing that jumps out the most they got a few big plays on us and a couple drives that got them moving but um for the most part I thought we were winning most of the downs and um gave up a couple big ones that we got to clean up but I was real impressed with our defense today offensively offensively you guys started three and out and then he scored I think on eight straight possessions after that did is that I don't want to say did you expect it to go that productive without Christian um someone spilled on myself sorry what's that it's a tough question um I mean you don't you don't really have expectations like that you just try to score every time you get the ball and I don't expect to go three and out ever um but still happens so um I didn't know that we did that until they just told me and kind of made sense that I don't remember seeing Mitch very much and so that did make sense um not having Christian is huge but um you know we we we got a team that really commits to running the ball um we got 10 guys out there who block for whoever the running back is and um we got some running backs and some receivers who know how to lower their pads and run the ball too see for Brock in his first uh full game without Christian um he seemed very very good I mean there was many plays that he left out there um I thought he made some big time plays I mean they're towards the end you know got a little conservative just felt that we had the game and wanted to focus on winning the game so we didn't have him do a lot there at the end and he was very smart with the ball and um made sure that there was no chance for them to get back in the game that was C Shanahan now we talk about the offense and the receivers Jawan Jennings had five receptions a game high 64 yards on the air Debo had 54 USI 40 KD had 40 28 for Brandon iuk zero sideline by auk as the game went on but early he he was on The Struggle Bus yeah that's what I saw from him early he did struggle started off with that slant versus sace Gardner normally B NAU grabs it he tucks it away he falls down strong gets a first down look like he was a little LAX of days ago with the ball and then when he Dove for that how many times have we seen Brandon nuk make a diving catch in a big game and come up with the catch a lot we've seen it a lot his eyes when you haven't repetitively run down the field and you're running looking at the ball while your eye level is bouncing it takes a while to get back adjusted to that but you saw in the game he started to you know loosen up start to make some plays but he did look tired yeah right I thought that he would be you know ready to go the entire game the cardiovascular endurance will be up that tank was empty I I can't in the third quarter that tank was empty Los we we should have a camera in the green whe to show the shenanigans that Dante Whitner does uh how do you think Tren Williams finished the game d well I tell you what when he went to the locker room yes he was so tired coming off the street off the couch playing 65 snaps he snatched all that equipment off he just rolled around on the locker room floor butt naked butt naked AC up like listen I did my job now we can go home I I and both fully butt naked but they W the football game to Levi Stadium listen in Brandon right now man he did a great job he was running real hard as he's been and show tonight how much did you want that touchdown catch Back In The End Zone by Brock looked like a dime it was a dime sick get it next week for sure overall how did you feel physically and I guess any any rust at all uh I felt good I felt good I felt good Brandon running out onto the field hearing your name called knowing that you were still playing at Levi Stadium as a ner what went through your head during that moment uh I was just excited I was just super excited ready to play did you feel that from a cohesiveness you guys had that offensively was it still kind of a feeling out process at all for you guys in terms of what just just I guess from from a rhythm standpoint or anything like that what you guys wanted to put on tape or on the field there no I think the offense uh did a great job did a great job how when did you guys know that CMC wasn't going to play uh I just found out play game Brandon how much has that changed the game was ruled out that step of encouragement going into taking that uh no he he's a great running back he's stepped in done great U multiple times before so same thing Brandon did you feel like d Samuel's performance was like1 all over again uh I don't know what that means but uh he had a great game [Music] today I thought you know there's some things that we could all probably do a little bit better at um just myself included just um the the the live speed and having everybody in together tied together with everything shifts motions operation um going against man coverage um finding ways to get open and being on time like there's just that that uh the sense of urgency that I think that we can be a little bit better with um I think we found that as the game went on but um you know definitely feel like we could all still get better so your first game without Christian did it seem weird to you to not have there yeah I mean I know you know Christian does a lot I think in the past game um you know dropping back and either going to him as a first option or knowing that he's he's my last option and and there's a really good chance that he's open um but with JP I think JP did a good job coming in and you know there were some third downs and stuff where I was able to hit him on on some checkdowns and him doing the same thing Christian has done so obviously you know Christian is the best you know in the league at running back and and what he does I'm not taking anything away from that um but I think JP did a good job of coming in and and filling his void and um doing his job to allow other guys to get open and and allow us to run our offense so that not that this team needs confidence Brock but given all you guys went through in the offseason what happened to Ricky last week and that tramatic experience no Christian tonight to have a convincing win like this against what we all believe is probably going to be a good team what does that do for the conf yeah I think it's good for us um you know we've been through a lot as a team you know just with signing guys trying to get guys back Ricky situation and and um Christian and and yeah there's there's a lot that goes on it's the NFL you know some crazy stuff can go on but just uh our culture our team uh what we stand for and and how we all come together and find find ways to win and rally around each other um we do it right here and um that's something that I stand on and firmly believe in and we all do so um you know I'm very proud of the guys to be able to you know fight through just all the adversity and stuff that we've been been going through in the last however many months but um we're just going to keep pushing together how have you seen him grow in the three years that you've been with him what was it like to see him have the success that he had tonight as first yeah I mean uh just you know coming in rookie year trying to learn the Playbook together you know he and I would like meet a lot and go through everything so he's always had that drive to to learn and knowing that you know we were guys that you know I was the last pick and he was undrafted and uh knowing that we weren't going to have a lot of opportunities and we had to make the most of the opportunities that we got um so he knew that and we both did and so to see him over the last two years you know just push the envelope more and more every year and then get an OP you know this year at camp and do well with it and obviously in the first game of the season he did great with it so really really excited for him he's earned it man he's the kind of guy that was not given to him and so um to see him go out and do what he did tonight man I'm so happy for him and I know he's going to keep pushing in studio with Dante and Rod give us a grade for tonight's performance for Brock prie um I'll give him an A minus no touchdowns but no mistakes he kept the line moving he did what he was supposed to do he got the ball to the people he needed to get the ball to um you know handled his business in the running game as best you're supposed to he made the right calls at the line of scrimmage um made big throws when he had to he didn't do anything to get the ners off schedule he didn't do anything to put them in a bad position to where they could not rely on the strength of the offense which was Mason in the Run game I don't know how you give him anything less than an a unless you're just going to ding him for not throwing a touchdown but why would you throw a touchdown when you had a guy run for 150 yards but he kind of did just IU dropped at d he did it was a beautifully that should have been caught but it didn't show up on the stats but there were a couple throws out there that he forced yeah that one that tay Adams number 22 came he had his hands on it if that guy goes out with two hands that's an interception he had two of those in the game but his growth I I saw his growth Debo to the flat looking at Debo throwing the ball down to KD right the um use check play coming through the middle the big play there the moving the underneath linebackers to get the ball to Jennings he's taking a step each and every year and that's what you want to see from your normally a player as young in the game as Brock pie if you don't have your best player in Christian mcaffrey and your best wide receiver is still trying to get adjusted after not being in Camp they would Panic from the beginning he absolutely did not do that let's go back out to Levi Stadium we got Laura Britt standing in with George KD Laura George at 32 point performance by the offense tonight granted a lot of that for Moody but it seems like the offense pick right back up where you guys left off is that how it felt on your end uh besides a two three an outs to start the game yes it definitely felt like that you know I think uh you kind of watch all the games I think everyone kind of started off slow for the first week that just kind of football you know there's penalties there's some sloppy play but uh because we were able to bring back all of our starters from last year and then you throw uh puny into the mix at our Right Guard our rookie uh from Kansas and he did a great job today um being able to bring everybody back you don't have to like teach everybody the whole offense again like everybody knows what the the standard is everybody knows what the players are everybody knows what Kyle's expecting of us so it was nice to we go out go out there and just go play football yeah that was obviously a big storyline the hold out the hold in all of that really was it really headlines all over the place I didn't notice it at all does it feel like everybody just fell right back into sink when you know Trent Williams back in the building Brandon iuk right here yes I think um the bossas stars that would have been great TV that's great TV the bossas everybody kings and queens um holy cow Trent Williams um you know he's a walking first bout Hall of Famer I'll say that till the day that I die he's amazing and so just having him on the practice field like his presence in the building is just it's gamechanging and then having ba back just things he can do on his route tree blocks everybody as hard as he possibly can and so getting him back too is just it's absolutely wonderful Jordan Mason big shoes to fill for Christian mcaffrey you're obviously a big part of the Run game and the blocking scheme what you see from Mason tonight uh the exact same thing I've seen from him for the last year and a half you know uh I think I think he's in year three now you know he started off um like he showed up as just like a kind of a Bruiser and then after like playing with Christian for a while being in the room with the best running back coach of the NFL Bobby t uh he just learn like how to push how to like stretch the zone to be able to cut back and he runs downhill so violently and physically he just dominates people and so we're just trying to clear up a little space for him and he's going to go you know he's a Workhorse which is we've known that for a while now how does this win set you guys up for the rest of the season Obviously good to get one win under your belt um you know what winning a game is way more fun than losing so we're going to focus on that one we're going to come in prep for the Minnesota Vikings and go see our friends like Sam darnold and go uh try to tackle him a couple times George thanks of course Happ 49ers in your house so it's going to be an early game the forers are going to have to come with their best I I don't know how you evaluate the Vikings defense off of that performance against the Giants because the Giants are uh dumpster juice but they did have four sacks so you got to give that the Vikings defense credit for that what I do know is that this is a Niner team that's going to go in that's not going to want to allow itself to get beat by Sam darnold no disrespect to Sam darnold but they're not going to want that to happen they are capable of handling Aaron Jones as we saw with the Niner run defense uh tonight Justin Jefferson's going to be a problem but he's a problem for everyone but if you can stifle that run defense and make Sam darnold the guy that has to beat you I like the ners chances problem is if we talk about this every year in these situations short week right short week for the ners coming off this game going to Minnesota early game too and an early game early 10 o00 game for us that could be problematic all right we got more reaction right now Laura Brit standing in with Joan Jennings and Levis Joanna good game for you five receptions for 64 yards averaging 12.8 yards on those receptions how did you feel settling into the offense in week one um took it a little slow just let the game come to me um I know we got great players all around so you know just waiting on somebody else to make a play and uh just being ready for when my numbers call up yeah it seemed like the offense really picked up from where it left off last season Jake Moody obviously carrying a heavy load for you guys tonight but with Brock pie and and then how the Jets were able defensively to attack you guys what did you see from the Jets and how they were able to stop you guys through the air some uh just playing hard and um just not giving up I say that's first and foremost um offense we just got to come out and just um keep B us and just you know know um we got a great kick that can give us three points if we can't get in the end zone yeah getting that week one win under your belt how does that feel fabulous amazing can't wait to take it to the house what was the message from coach after the game um just just knowing what we can uh what we're capable capable of doing and U just going back to work and a quick turnaround for Minnesota and Jordan Mason filling in nicely for chrisan mcaffrey how impressed were you with him tonight extremely you know I'm always impressed with him we know we're going to get from JP we know what we're going to get from um Chris Colin we know what we going to get from just the beginner when did you find out that you'd be in the starting lineup that question right there is is where I'm at uh that's why I don't like really talking to Media cuz you say one thing wrong and then you know I don't know just skip that question describe your uh your touchdown run in the third quarter and what that meant to you guys meant everything my family was here it meant everything we've watched this all summer you've been running really hard on the practice field um did you feel like this offseason you did some different things that prepare you for this season mhm I did a lot of different things uh caught the ball more more conditioning that's all did uh Christian talk to you at all throughout the game any tips any tips he said that you could share and just how what encouragement he offered he did just keep doing me earlier today um got the news and you know uh we went from there when that happens are they you told like hey you're going to have to perhaps line up more in the back field going to have the ball in your hands a lot more yeah Kyle came to me he was like you're going to contribute a little bit in the Run game and um you know me I'm all I'm all for whatever helps the team win what do you think of Jordan Mason's performance today 147 freshing here oh it's kind of no surprise for me um the way he's been working in Camp and you know the way how and how hard he run you know he's going to break tackles and that's just like the standard of our team and you know he had he came out here and had a great day was there any point where you looked across the field at Brandon or Trent and was like good thing you're here I was worried oh no um I I had that conversation every day at practice so I mean we we in the game now so there no need to you know uh har on what you know could have been um they here now and and we just move forward have a favorite moment in the game where you said yeah we're back and we're rolling on offense N I was just going play by play what the I was just going play by play and um what we scored like 32 points and you know we moving the ball offense were you surprised you guys did put up 30 p against this defense tonight oh no I'm never surprised what our offense and you know the position our defense put us in all right that was a tandem of Jordan Mason and dbo Samuel back here in the studio with Dante waiter Rod Brooks godos Ramirez you got a breakdown to do we're going to give you a debut a new tool you saw on pre but now on post because you see season three of us three deserves new toys and season 15 of
