Broncos thumped the Arizona Cardinals at home in a Showcase of Zack Wilson which players made the strongest case for the 53 man roster especially on the back end there when we talk about depth and on top of that a lot of promise from the Broncos rookie class in this game against the Cardinals but more importantly the biggest story of the game Zack Wilson showcasing a lot in Sunday's Victory could this game have meant for a guy like Zach Wilson who we all know like you and I talked about earlier this week is there a backup quarterback battle perceivably going into this game I thought so and then Jarrett stdm only played one series after getting the start and then we saw Zach Wilson the entire way after that so kind of like a little bit of a mixed bag I wanted to get your thoughts on this because Zach in this game came in and he balled out he did and it was really the full Zach Wilson experience wasn't it and I think he did take that number two quarterback job in my opinion not because I dislike Jarrett stum but I just feel like and I've said this before but I think the upside with Zach out there is a little bit higher now yes that does come with you know maybe some risky throws like we saw the one to Lucas Crow we saw the screen pass that he basically threw right into the belly of a defensive lineman and you know he he came away from this game unscathed right no interceptions things like that but did take a few sacks that maybe he held the ball a little too long even though the backup offensive line I mean when you're talking about third fourth string guys it does tend to get a little bit rough out there but you know I thought it was a good out from Zach overall 251 yards passing 16 of 25 completions 1203.9 rating added 22 yards as a runner including a rushing touchdown and 21 of those yards correct me if I'm wrong was on one carry and then the other one yard was the touchdown so I think it was overall an impressive outing from him in just every way like he wasn't just throwing screen passes he was pushing the ball down field he was hitting David sills in Rhythm you know and I really was encouraged by that because of all of what we've heard from him this off season all of what we knew about him from the Jets I think it was a really positive day for Zach Wilson yeah and as you mentioned it you got the full-on experience minus yeah he didn't throw an interception I thought he played clean he he almost had an interception early on the first quarter I feel like after his first drive he really settled in you mentioned the 21 yard run that was on second and 20 then he finds David Sills twice for 10 plus yard gains and then Nate Nate Atkins on a comeback at about 19 yards and then you know the float to Atkins for the one yard touchdown in the flat there I liked what I saw from Zach I felt like when the pocket was clean I thought his operation was was very efficient I thought he went through like there were times where you'd see him go through his reads and his progressions versus just locking on to one guy because that was a little bit of a critique from him early on in New York is you know he would lock onto a guy and defenses would pinpoint that you saw him maneuver out of that you saw him at times use his legs to escape a dirty pocket and then there were times where the pocket there was nothing he could have done and got wam blasted a few times there I mean that's just a product of that offensive line play my initial thoughts on this and look I'm very curious for this discussion you and I are going to have in Bronco's country obviously your thoughts are welcome on this too we we value it seems like the fan base is kind of split a little bit in terms of like what what does Denver do at the back job I know you're in favor of Zack being the backup I think Zack made a tremendous case but like for me part of is wondering okay like if Zack's going to be the backup why did Jarett stum only get one series he also only got a handful of plays in that first preseason game and we didn't get to see too much from him you know in that second preseason game in terms of volume altogether Jarrett s's preseason showing isn't as lengthy or extensive as what we've seen from bonck or even Zack Wilson to that regard so is this more so along the lines it could be a multi two the things I tweeted out that I felt like this could be like the Albert oonam showcase for Zack Wilson right where hey he goes out there has a terrific game all the Vibes that he's gonna make the 53 and then you Garner some trade interest for him right that's a possibility or is it the fact that hey maybe a guy like Jer St him because he doesn't have as much volume in the preseason here in a situation where Shawn pyton has clearly come out and said that he sees them carrying potentially three guys he sees all three of them making it kind of what they did with Mike purcel last year releasing him with the attempt to bring him back and still having him on as part of the roster where do you think this goes here because I'm a little stumped I sea is not giving away his hand the indication though he said after the game is I see all three of them making it I feel like Zach as you and I talked about you know we talk about upside I think Zach definitely demonstrated the ability to Boom inside of this offense a little bit and and the hope is that nothing happens to B Knicks if Zach is your backup quarterback I mean the idea if something happens to Bon Nick you're in trouble anyways yeah and I I do think that in that case yeah your your season is you know kind of a wash without bow Knicks out there right but unfortunately I think that is the only way Zach's going to see the field is injury this year and and therefore I believe the work is yet to be done in terms of Shawn Payton rehabilitating his overall value like even right now I feel like Zach Wilson's trade value wouldn't be such that the Broncos could get let's say a Trey Lance type of return right with the 49ers got from the Cowboys with a fourth round pick or so I don't think the Broncos could get quite that I think as the season goes along the value increases now the the like you said the the full menu of options is still on the table because both Jarrett stum and Zach Wilson are in contract years like there is a little bit of pressure on the Broncos in both of these guys cases to say all right like what do you want to do with these guys do you really want to hoard all of them on the roster and just risk losing them next year for nothing or do you want to take the best offer that's out there now do you want to take a risk and see what's out there at the NFL trade deadline if it was me because quarterbacks are the most valuable currency in the NFL I'm saying keep these three guys on the roster unless you get something that you cannot resist in a trade return I'm not saying some team's going to come and overpay like a third round pick or a second round pick but certainly if you get offered a fourth or maybe even a fifth one for one of these guys I think that might be a deal where if you say okay it's a good situation we're sending them to and you know it's an option for them to potentially make a bunch of money going forward because that's ultimately maybe the biggest part of his hand that sha has given away right is that he wants at least in Zach Wilson's case he said it our job is to make you Millions whether it's here or somewhere else and I don't think he's gonna trade him or Jarrett unless it gives them the opportunity to do just that I I think the only thing I struggle with in that standpoint is you like if you keep three quarterbacks under your 53 what positional depth are you potentially impacting what's that one spot that potentially gets impacted by that decision I mean that to me is a huge question we won't know like Tuesday's deadline is 2 pm mountain time once roster cuts are final and full obviously you'll get something here from us on the show but I do think it is an interesting Dilemma to to kind of throw out there I liked what I saw from Zach Wilson he certainly gives you some Flash and I think the major argument that I've seen from Broncos fans is that like was St him you don't necessarily see flash like with Zack you see flash like that throw Zack Wilson had to Brandon Johnson for the touchdown that was a dime that was Beauty he had two dimes to Brandon Johnson in this game so I I came away impressed and like I said with Zach Wilson he has carried himself throughout this entire process as one of the you know highest levels of of professionalism that I can imagine considering everything that he's been through new environment you know he's got a lot of pressure on him because hey it's like hey you you a top two pick in the NFL draft and you haven't worked out so far this could be your last chance I think he's handled all that really well so we will see in Broncos Country we want to know from you obviously how do you think this pans out here for Zack Wilson do they carry three is he qb2 what is Shawn pyton gonna do make sure you let us know here but look there's a lot of excitement about this Broncos team inside that locker room but even with their young guys the rookie class making plays standing out we'll highlight them and their performance in this game here on today's pretty good in this game and it was a strong showing from the rookie class literally from start to finish of this game you and I were just talking about it off camera as uh you went down to the field level of the stadium I'll let you share that story of of the last play there but man from the very beginning of this game it was the rookie show for the Broncos it seemed like a concerted effort from Shawn pyton and the staff to get these guys involved especially offensively early on yeah and look there were a lot of a lot of players that didn't play I was I had my binoculars up in the Press Box looking at like all the inactives pregame who are going through the pregame workout of guys who normally don't participate was like man there's there's a lot of guys so you're going to see this youth movement that sea has been talking about and really I think this youth movement starts and ends with this rookie class when we talk about like for example look bonick didn't see him playing this game but had a chance to catch up with audri ese after the game inside the locker room and one thing he talked about he said you know hey yeah we have a young team he says but I think one one thing that we have that goes in our favor that could be used as an advantage is I think that for a young team were very mature and he says I think you see that level the maturity with a guy like Bo Nicks so and certainly s I mean correct me like your perception like when you watch this Broncos team and you see these young guys playing like it does seem like a lot of these young guys are further ahead than maybe most people thought they would be estimate obviously capped off the first offensive series for Denver with a rushing touchdown he looked good in short yarded situations he looked good as maybe that goal line back there for Denver and then you also had other guys contributing Devon V had that catch from jar and was fourth and two and all of a sudden you see him in his first action does a good job getting inside against the cornerback catching it doing some damage after the catch on Fourth and two for a 14 yard gain I I just think that this rookie class and look not to beat a dead horse but Shawn Payton has raved about this class consistently which is a little odd because you didn't hear him Rave about last year's class in any way shape or form the way that he has this class I don't know if it's because he's got his quarterback but the Vibes in the locker room talking to players after the game I talked to a couple veteran guys and I said hey like you guys seem like you have more energy this year and he says we got a lot of we got a lot of youthful energy it's contagious and they said you know what like it feeds into well to our identity and so I'm very excited to see how that plays out but seeing players inside that locker room veteran guys who've been in this league five six seven years some of these guys there is some excitement inside that locker room about this young rookie class that they have and also the youth that they have behind it yeah we and we finally got to see a little bit of Troy Franklin getting involved in the offense as well I believe he notched his first reception of the preseason in this game he did he did really well really nice and that pass that he caught from Zack Wilson was man that was not an easy catch either so we know he struggled with drops this off season but uh man a great showing for Troy Franklin on that especially on that first drive the nice end round play just getting him a fabricated touch there Jonah Ellis out there doing his thing Cody drawing double team triple team I think I saw at one point he got triple teamed he's just a an absolute Menace out there Chris Abrams drain couple good reps and and so to me when we when you talk about this youthful energy that this team has like of course like my mind starts racing back to teams that I know teams that I've loved in the past and I think about the 2015 Chicago Cubs like Joe Madden coaching that team a bunch of young guys coming up from the minor leagues didn't know any better don't really care the team hasn't won a World Series in over a hundred years like they're just there to to play ball and and to set a culture of their own and they did exactly that and they exceed expectations very quickly not they they became one of the World Series contenders in 2015 won the World Series in 2016 and and how do you do that well you build this kind of chemistry that we're seeing from the Denver Broncos and whether you want to call it Blissful ignorance or what I know it's the preseason I get it I know that you don't want to overreact to the preseason but I don't think we are Cody I think that every every media person has given us every reason to not be excited about the Broncos this offseason and and what we've now seen every single one of us with our own eyes watching the preseason games unfold has given Broncos Country every reason to be stoked and I think it starts with this rookie class which was outstanding all throughout the preseason but especially I think even without bow Knicks in this game against the Cardinals yeah and look we could even spread that down to maybe some of the undrafted guys to that point of that story you were G to have me tell uh just going down the last five minutes you know of the game you take the elevator get down to so you can get to locker room to interview players post game and I was you know getting down there I got to to the ground level there and all of a sudden you just see lvll Bailey running by I'm like oh where's lvll going oh pick six okay 94 yards to the house there for lville Bailey he had a big crowd around him after the game and you just got all these young guys chipping in look even Tanner mallister flying around a little bit kedron Smith recovering a fumble and that dislodging of football that bounced out of bounds like you're seeing a lot of these young guys just make plays and it's exciting to see but it's also just this locker room and you go through and you see like for example like all eyes are on these young guys today in terms of what we saw on the field right when you go in the locker room there's a lot of these vets that you know when there's a media scrum around a young player like you got guys that are standing in the back you know cheering and saying hey yeah there you go like just because there is some hype there and obviously that means that's going to be a little bit tough because here in the next couple of days there's going to be some tough decisions here by the Broncos as they have to trim the roster from 90 players to 53 I will say the nucleus though in terms of where they team is at you it's kind it's a good thing that they're young like I I think so many times we see it perception wise every year in the NFL like you need veteran lading teams and look I think there is a lot of validity to having veterans on your team to have a veteran Le team at times but I think when you have a healthy mix of young players and look players like Bo Nicks who's got leadership traits that players love like you talk to any player in not locker room they're really impressed with Bo they respect Bo they they've bought into Bo Knicks really from day one and then you look at all these young guys that are contributing and and playing these important roles there's a trust Factor there from these vets with these young guys like that right there can do so much to Galvanize a locker room and is it gonna lead to to the Broncos winning more than eight games we don't know right that that result is is to be played out here but I think that the overall Vibe and even just talking to fans leaving the stadium fans are excited just about like The Vibes and the field that direction that they're heading in a good direction here with this team even if they don't win a lot of games this year they could win a lot of games year we we just don't know yet a lot of people don't think that they can but I think that this is going to be a little bit more of a dangerous team than people are going to give credit for so I think a lot of it has to do with the youth movement the energy this team does have it it absolutely does and I think when you look at that FanDuel over under of five and a half wins like that's the easiest over I think you can smash about among any team in the league this year with the Denver Broncos like you said we don't know if they're going to be a nine- win team a 10- win team a six- win team like but I guarantee you they ain't no five win team because this team won five games during the Nathaniel hacket season right and so it's every year is different in the NFL yeah sometimes the ball doesn't bounce your way but look this Broncos team is is one that I think other teams aren't going to want to play as the season progresses because that chemistry is going to start to formulate into something that's a bit combustible for maybe contending teams late in the season like you're not going to want to play a team that's playing with house money so to speak right and for the Broncos like it doesn't feel as with the Russell Wilson era Cody it doesn't necessarily feel as though the pressure is is quite as crazy right when when you acquire Russell Wilson in a trade you sign him to the 2050 million deal or whatever that was I mean that puts pressure on the organization to like you better be in a Super Bowl window and then it's super embarrassing when you're not now the expectation is oh five and a half wins over under and uh and that's probably being generous on our end because you got the worst roster in the league the worst uh quarterback room in the league you got the worst this the worst that and now it's like okay so you don't think we can do anything so we're going to show you what we can do and we're gonna make a lot of people look bad in the process and I love that that the Broncos are going to be able to do that this season and that's the number one thing too it's like the players everyone sees the outside noise right it's up to them whether not they allow that to infiltrate the locker room and to possess them like I think that this team I think a lot of these guys have a chip on their shoulder regardless but I don't think they're going to let the perception of like what media has to say or like you know the national media for the matter because the players know because they see the local media in the locker room every day the national media is never at practice like that's the thing I always want to try to tell people like hey when the national media tweets something or puts something stupid out there that like gets you fired up just know that those people never step foot into the building to watch practice they just look at a and they look at age and they look at all this stuff and they're like oh terrible roster Power Rankings 32 or 31 I I think Denver is happy to be in a position where they can go and prove some people wrong this year and that's the mentality that this team does have but on top of that that mentality matriculates throughout this entire roster and the roster will go from 90 players to 53 on Tuesday by 2 o'clock pm mountain time now some players who are maybe questionable to make the roster who made the strongest case for themselves we'll highlight some players like dandre Tilman Jordan Jackson and even Zack Wilson for the 53 man roster we'll make the case here on today's episode become compliant with what the league mandates in terms of roster limits and structuring there's going to be a lot of gymnastics and a lot of moves some surprises we don't know all that yet but what we do know is there are several players who stood out and made a strong case for themselves as starting things off here with Zach Wilson on today's episode lockdown Broncos once again thanks to everyone in Broncos country all the every dayers out there for making us a part of your day s Zach Wilson you and I talked about him a little bit more in depth in the first segment here in terms of maybe being on the bubble a little bit I know really going into this game is questionable as to like what's the direction with Zach Wilson I think he probably made the strongest case offensively of making the team making the 53 man roster and we already went into those details there bringing him up as part of that conversation is important defensively there was one player young guy as well who had himself a good first quarter Jordan Jackson two sacks in the first quarter he was all over when he was on the field that was I mean I felt like he made a case too when you look at where Denver is at from a defensive line and a depth stpoint you know we factor in the QB decision coming up do they carry three do they carry two if they carry three how does that impact the roster a guy like Jordan Jackson what is what comes to mind like with his performance it's like all right well if you're going to keep three quarterbacks does that impact how many as you carry on the D line which would impact a guy like Jackson in my opinion it it definitely does and it has a trickle effect all over the roster and Jordan Jackson is a guy that I don't think you can discount by any means because remember back in that first preseason game he was with the starting lineup there on the dline he's been continually rotating in with the second unit here as the preseason progressed and like you said Cody a couple of sacks in this game one of them on cleanup Duty after Nick Bonito kind of crossed face to the inside made a really good pass rush move there and Jordan Jackson took advantage of that and then he had a nice inside move himself to kind of collapse the pocket there and make some he's just making play and he's been I think we mentioned him on the show last week a number of times as somebody to kind of watch out for as you're assembling your 53 man rosters out there Jordan Jackson is definitely a player on the defensive line that I would say is he the number five D lineman right now over even Angelo blackon I think that's kind of where I come down on this is all right so Jordan Jackson he's got some you know Youth and you're going with the youth movement overall right now so maybe keep the the former Air Force player and bring him into the mix there so I kind of like that idea how about dandre Tillman though I mean we called him out pregame and and certainly he was one of those guys that we were looking forward to seeing Play coming off the edge working on special teams doing all the different things that would be required of a fifth Edge on this roster I feel like dandre came out and and had a great game and made a maybe his strongest case for the roster yet I I feel like he did because you and I also talked about it as well with Thomas incum I I feel like dandre Tilman probably made a little bit of a stronger case here on the afternoon than Thomas incum perception right is that the reality I don't know I think we're going to find out here in the next 48 to 72 hours what the coaching staff decides and I'll be curious to see how quickly they get moving on maybe filling out a 53 man roster if they get that done before the deadline certainly is possible but no I like the the pressure standpoint of what he was able to do I mean you talk about some tfl opportunities he's big he's physical he's I think if I'm not mistaken he had a pass batted down today as well he is a guy that's just his high motor consistently stands out and look for him coming over from the UFL this is a guy who is been playing football kind of like similar like last year to Ben denucci's been playing football all year long so I mean he's in a good position right now was it enough to push out a guy like Thomas inkum I I feel like there's a good argument to be made here for for dondre Tilman um I I'm curious to see your thoughts here like does Denver carry four pass rushers because they have four really good pass rushers right now do they carry five because you need a depth option in the event an injury happens or I asked sea Payton on Friday I we didn't get a chance to bring this up because we didn't do a show but I asked about like if you have these players who are are playing well in these first two games or let's say they their third game they don't have as great of a game how does that impact like or even on the inverse how does it impact your perception of that player and then making the 53 man roster and he says really it's the full body of work right I think if we look at the full body of work here dandre Tillman in my opinion has been very impressive since day one since he stepped onto the field so I think he has an opportunity to kind of push somebody out a little bit here in that rotation room um what about like let's also focus on wide receiver like that's a a really deep room we didn't see Lil Jordan Humphrey playing this game which I'm like huh what's the reason behind that we know Josh Reynolds is dealing with an assur Achilles right now but you saw Brandon Johnson go out there and haul in a couple of catches and obviously the touchdown there from Zach Wilson Brandon Johnson's also had a very quiet under the rate our preseason training camp and have a feeling if he ends up on the waiver wire I have a feeling there's going to be an NFL team out there that does snag him up 100% I I don't think he's getting past the Pittsburgh Steelers if he does hit the waiver wire with the with Zach aani being there as the wide receivers coach and I'm sure there's a number of other teams that would like to have him and so maybe the Broncos do generate some trade interest there from him and he could be that guy this year who's like the Trinity Benson from a couple years back um and when you consider full body of work like Brandon Johnson is one of those guys that's like all right so you see him come out and have a big game like this and then you start to think well you had four touchdowns last year and has made a number of plays throughout the course of his time you just wonder where are the snaps going to come from for him at wide receiver with courland Sutton Tim Patrick Marvin Mims Josh Reynolds Devon Bay I just I I wonder if it's best for Brandon to get an opportunity where he's going to get a lot more snaps going forward at at another team on another roster and the Broncos have to find a way to capitalize by making sure that they get value for him as opposed to just cutting him now does is that gonna happen I don't know I'm setting the over under on trades for the Broncos at0 five and I'm saying the over I think we get at least one trade but I I don't know where Brandon Johnson Works into the game day roster this year does he play a lot of special teams and we haven't even talked about Jaylen Virgil who you know showed out in the game as a receiver and blocking a little bit as well utilizing his size so there's a lot of question marks right now that like you said when you talk about that quarterback position and keeping three guys it it's only one spot yes but it does have a domino effect on the entire roster as a whole that makes it a little bit more challenging and certainly these next couple of days there going to be a lot of fun takes I think there's going to be a lot of good fan commentary about who they hope makes the roster and look that is a perfect segue for us to end the show here today look Broncos Country Denver wins Big Time against the Arizona Cardinals a lot of young players standing out special shout out to Justin sternard by the way uh six tackles in the first half alone one sack of force fumble where he absolutely demolished Tony Jones Jr there and kedon Smith who also had another impressive game in my opinion picked up the fumble there and just a lot of contributions here for Denver good depth across the board there's more stuff that we're going to talk about obviously tomorrow in the aftermath of the preseason roster scuts will start to
