welcome back to the MSU Federal Credit Union coaches show Jonathan Smith's arrival to Michigan state is highly anticipated for a lot of fans thanks to his track record at his Alma moer the former quarterback helped turn around the Oregon State football program and one player on the current Michigan State roster fans are expecting to help with that rebuild and turnaround sophomore quarterback Aiden chil who played his freshman year for Smith at Oregon State Charles is a Cali native and is one of five captains MSU is going to have this season he sat down with our Haley Shard and has more on how patience led him to East Lancing well couple weeks into fall Camp has this fall Camp lived up to your expectations of what you thought it would be when you followed Jonathan Smith here this winter yeah most of it I mean coming in you know I was expecting you know play football for Coach man and I mean last year my fall Camp started off little rocky this year I think we had good energy came man we're pretty good defense looks good offense looks you know we're still getting just putting pieces together but overall everything is looking way better than I expected and I think we'll be ready I know we'll be ready week one last year I knew I was back up tried to do too much and you know things happened got a little shaky but this year it's um I feel like I'm in a pretty secure spot and um don't really have to worry about too much just got to play my game and encourage my teammates what excites you the most about this team how much we can do just in general like I think this team has a very high ceiling and um I think we can do a lot with this team but we just got to put it all [Applause] together you came on your official visit to MSU four days before that you tweeted you needed to meet Zeke the wonderdog how did you even discover who Zeke the wonderdog was living all the way on the other side of the country um honestly I really don't know we was um I think I was on YouTube and I don't know I think I was just looking up MSU stuff and then you know Zeke showed up I was like yeah this this is cool I need to meet this dog I got a complete uh frisbe pass with Zeke in like in the real setting one time just one try like I can't mess up no more I messed up last in the spring game messed up a few time so one time you're pretty young born in ' 05 how do you think being one of the younger ones in the group has made you kind of play with a chip on your shoulder being young it's going to it's not really a factor in my game I mean we play football we all here to play the same game and we all do the same things um I know what I signed up for CH my shoulder it's always going to be there High School Oregon State you know we weren't supposed to win any games I wasn't supposed to play ended up playing and then um here you know 16th in the Big 10 I love it I love it it's beautiful it's not really an underdog mentality at the end of the day I think it's more of a uh go hunt mentality you know like prove the prove to the people that you can do what you can do like you say you can do these things you know you can do these things but now you got to do them so it's not really Underdog I think we just have to well me myself I just have to you know play my game and just get back to what I was doing when I was little 5 years 10 years old you know doing my thing so yeah when did you start playing football picked up a football at 2 years old my mom has the videos she'll show you everything if you ask her I don't know who gave me the football I don't know what happened but they know I could throw when I was little didn't want to play quarterback growing up at all and then um I want to say around six seventh grade my dad was like all right you going to go out there and throw all right man so went out there and throw and I just I guess I stuck with it ever since w n women's and national football football league ready what position did you want to play then a receiver my dad play receiver and mean like you know you get I feel like the receivers get all the glory you know you get to catch the game winning ball and do whatever you can I didn't realize know blocking and everything went into it like when I was little like we wasn't doing all that but yeah but receiver was so fun to me so I liked it so growing up who did you idaliz and who did you try to model your game after that's funny um I'm gonna say I'm I mean it's Calvin Johnson Stafford who took a hit firing for the endone and is but it's weird me saying it now because you go we got Nick Marsh on the team and they call him baby Megatron or they call him yeah I'm never calling him that though don't tell him yeah I but Calvin Johnson for sure you've got patience tattooed on your wrist what is the significance behind that junior year broke my arm in high school and uh I remember that day like the pain of breaking M didn't hurt but the fact that it was my junior year no offers no scholarships like just me playing trying to sixth game of the season I was actually catching my groove I walked up the field I was fine and I hugged my mom started crying like it was it was really bad but um I always told my mom like those few days like um um yeah I'm running out of time that's how I felt but you know you have to be patient and things come to you and luckily I was patient enough lingren was coach Smith came my way and I mean it's patience also like last year patience I had to have patience to play and I ended up playing and it is what it is so now I got to have patience this year and just be able to just trust everything and I come out here and I compete like that's what I do I'm here to compete I mean I'm going have my bad days I'm going have my good days as long as it's practice though and in the game I'm here to win so I told you earlier like I love it it's beautiful being able to just prove that you can go out here and you can show these dudes like really who you are and what you do child's leadership skills and personality has come up multiple times when talking with his teammates and coaches they Rave about how the sophomore QB is fit to be a leader for this team another player eager to leave his Mark at MSU is sixth year defensive end Chris Bogle we sat down with him this week and we'll have more right after the break I love getting out and trying new things but my seizures have always kept me back thankfully the providers and researchers at MSU Healthcare work together to get my Epsy under control so now I can try anything at MSU Healthcare
