I'm going to focus on prpt number two for a second can you give listeners some tips for that and I'm going to also read it and it reads in the aftermath of the US Civil War Ezra Cornell wrote quote I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study close quote for over 150 years Cornell University has remained deeply committed to Ezra's Vision explain how your life experiences will help inform your contributions to a law school learning community devoted to quote any person any study close quote we encourage you to think broadly about what you contribute to a law school class and eventually to the legal profession including but not necessarily the expertise you have experience you can share and how communities of which you have been a part have shaped your perspective that's a long prompt it is a long prompt well but let me say this I have you know reviewed applications in my past on other what I would say more generic prompts and now I had a a a great cycle to look at thousands of applications using these prompts and seeing how all the an took took various directions and approaches to it was very enlightening as well and particularly promptu for me and I'm it's interesting that you focused in on prompt 2 as well it really speaks to the core of the institution itself at Cornell um and how it was founded is that you know for for any person any study um instruct standards and what I found in the response or what I'd advise in applicant is that gives you the great opportunity to speak about yourself in in an authen authentic and genuine way and if there's one thing I could leave with a law school applicant at least a tip that I think is important to me so I'll speak just for myself as one file Reviewer is that authenticity is really the coin of the realm here if you can stand out as an applicant and I have a better feeling of who you are not who you think you want me to think you are but who you are I think that will serve you really really well because emissions is a two-way street you know you'll want to be accepted by by the right law school for you and if they know who you are that helps and then you'll want to then fit in and Thrive there so in response to that prompt I've seen a number of just tremendous essays and stories about personal experiences from from various individuals in all different directions it could be about their family background it could be about a very specific event in their life that impacted them and then altered the trajectory of of their life and then why they um are pursuing the law or a career in the law and so uh for me it's been a privilege to read thousands of applications and just essentially meet or learn of all these people with all their experiences and then what's Driven them to apply to Cornell [Music]
