-Our next guests are
two legendary athletes, and between them
have seven Olympic medals, two World Cup championships,
four WNBA championships, and many, many more awards that I don't have enough time
to list here. Their new episodes of their
podcast, "A Touch More," air Wednesdays on YouTube,
Apple, and Spotify. Please welcome to the show
Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe! [ Cheers and applause ] [ Mid-tempo music plays ] ♪♪ ♪♪ I'm so happy you're here.
-We're so happy. -You guys have been really
taking advantage of your time in New York City. You've been on a bit
of a sports tour. -Yeah, we have. -You were at a New York-Seattle,
a WNBA game. -Uh-huh.
-Courtside seats. -You know.
-You have season tickets? -Season tickets.
-Yes. -I have to technically buy them
because she's -- -She's the holder...
-I'm the holder. -...of the season ticket.
-Why do you have to, technically, buy them? -'Cause she's, like,
legendary Storm player, and now she's in
the ownership group, and I just...
-Okay, Gotcha. Now, everybody
who's at a WNBA game knows that you used to play
for the competition. Are you well received
in New York City when you're at a Liberty game?
-I am. I am, yeah.
I'm from here originally. -Yeah, exactly.
-So they overlook the fact that you couldn't pick
where you got drafted. -They do notice
that I never cheer. -Oh, for either team?
-Yeah, unless it's Seattle. -Oh, gotcha.
-So, if New York is playing Dallas,
I just -- stoic. Every now and then, I might be
like, "Okay, nice move." -We can cheer for Stewie 'cause Stewie
played for Seattle. -Yeah, we love Breanna Stewart.
-Oh, yeah, of course. Former teammate.
-That's basically it. -It's tough for me.
-You also went to the U.S. Open. Did you enjoy your time
at the tennis match? -Loved it.
-Yeah. -How many of those honey drinks
did you guys have? -A bunch.
-Whoa, whoa, whoa. I don't even --
This is like asking height, weight, age.
-No, no, no. -Well, it was five --
-Not allowed to ask this. I'm asking the last question
you're allowed to ask. -God.
-How many Honey Deuces? -It was a five-setter.
And those sets are long. -Are you already making excuses
for your answer? -I would say 1 1/2 a set,
-1 1/2 a set? Don't make the math hard.
-We were doing -- We were doing
different variations. We were putting tequila in them,
per Serena Williams' suggestion. I was half in the lemonade,
'cause who's drinking this, which is lemonade?
-Yeah. -The hell?
-So, that's your issue with it, is there's too much lemonade
in your tequila? -Yeah. That's necessary.
[ Laughter ] -That's how you know
you're athletes. like, "There's a lot of sugar
in that." -Yeah.
-Alright. -It's not the alcohol.
-You guys also were at the Paris Olympics, and you brought
a lot of good luck. You were at
women's soccer final, women's basketball final,
men's basketball final. Was it fantastic?
[ Cheers and applause ] -You know, for our Olympians, -I assume you miss being,
you know, participating. But it also must be
a lot more chill going as someone
who's just watching. -So much more chill.
-Yeah. -It's, like, I miss playing.
I miss playing. I miss coming on shows like this
where they're like, "Show us your gold medal,"
and it's, like, this big moment. That was always fun
when you got to return home. But watching from the sidelines,
zero stress. -Yeah.
-Zero stress. I don't miss that part. So it was it was nice
to be a fan. It was great,
sleeping in, having drinks, go and watch the game,
going to parties. -Having a big old lemonade.
-Yeah. [ Laughter ]
Exactly. -You have not had lemonade
till you've had it in Paris. -You have too much sugar
the night before, you got to get sugar
in the morning. You know what I mean?
-You obviously have both been feted, celebrated for your time.
The Reign, your team in Seattle,
retired your number. How do you like these moments where you receive
all this attention? -Honestly,
it's really uncomfortable. It's like I didn't know that
about myself until, really, last year.
It started to happen a little bit,
and then obviously this year. But I was like, "This is --
There's a lot -- Every -- It's all about me,
and, like, I agreed to it, and I -- now just here,
and it's all about me, I like more of an in-the-moment,
like, spontaneous." Same person who scored a goal
and proceeded to what? -Make it all about me.
[ Laughter ] "For me?"
-That's what you said. -It was, like, uncomfortable
and overwhelming, and also, like, beautiful.
-Right. Exactly. If it's in the moment, if
you score a goal, you're fine. Like, "Hey,
this is my moment." But if everybody's, like --
for, like, months out, it's going to be
a real special day for you. -Yeah, like, "Oh, my gosh,
I have to say words. I'm gonna cry a lot,"
but beautiful. -How did you do
when you were crying? Did you do right?
-I did okay, I did okay. Walking out of the tunnel, some some tears
started to happen. But then I think,
when I got up there, I was probably, like,
so overwhelmed, and I only had a few minutes
to speak, which was great. So I just kind of like
thanked everybody and bowed out. -Very nice.
You were honored with a street --
your own street in Seattle. -Yeah.
-Very nice. [ Cheers and applause ] Have you spent
much time at the street? Have you seen
where the street is? -Yeah, actually,
I'm familiar with the street. It was my route
to get to the arena. -So it's near the arena.
-Yeah, it's right -- Like, it runs kind of
right into it. Lenny Wilkens a longtime
great Sonic, a legend -- he has Lenny Wilkens Way. Sue Bird Court
runs right into it. So we're working a corner there.
-Oh, that's really exciting. They're working the corners.
-Yeah. Yeah, we're good. -I like that, like, "How is Sue
doing after retirement?" "She working the corner."
[ Laughter ] -Doing my part, doing my part. -And I want to ask
about the podcast, as well. You guys are gonna
stick around for me? -Absolutely .
-Alright, you guys, we will be right back with
more Sue and Megan after this.
