now to a health alert making National headlines A leria outbreak linked to bores head deli meat has now killed nine people with cases reported in these 18 states here including right here in Florida ABC Action News reporter Rebecca petite had a conversation with doctors about the symptoms to look for the CDC is reminding people not to eat recalled deli meats amid A leria outbreak I didn't really know about it but um since it is and it's the fact I probably won't buy Bor head till it's cleared up the CDC says at least nine people have died after being infected with leria from borsh head Deli meets 57 people have been hospitalized in 18 states making this the largest leria outbreak in the US since 2011 the agency says the true number of illnesses is probably higher than what's been reported that's 57 people who had severe enough disease that they ended up hospitalized I I would bet there were actually quite a few more cases that had mild disease and weren't actually hospitalized in Late July bores had recalled more than 7 million pounds of Deli products due to leria contamination leria infections can be hard to pinpoint because symptoms can occur up to 10 weeks after eating contaminated food symptoms include fever muscle aches and fatigue Dr Jill Roberts with USF College of Public Health tells me infections are espe especially dangerous for pregnant women and older people as many as half of all pregnancies will actually end due to leria and so that's a big problem the other opposite side of the spectrum I think with this is that the elderly individuals are at high risk and that's because with age our immune system response actually wains doctors encourage Anyone Who develops symptoms to get medical care right away once it actually progresses to the um nervous system you're kind of in a more advanced deg a disease and it's harder to treat but in the earlier stages it it can in fact be treated so if you suspect you may be sick from leria definitely want to reach out to a healthcare provider Rebecca petite ABC Action News
