want to talk to bring in France 24's European Affairs editor Arman georan who can talk about that his European credentials Emanuel Macon is a fierce defender of Europe and so is Michelle berer yeah and they were in close touch actually during the brexit negotiations they texted each other a lot and um it's pretty obvious I think that maon appreciated uh how barer handled the British attempts to split uh the uh the Europeans during the negotiations because of course the British were trying to open separate lines of communication with the European commission with the Germans and so forth and so uh in a sense barer really kept all that together that's of course something that maon appreciated so even though barer has said some things about Emanuel macron that are not particularly um uh what's the word uh not very flattering uh the fact is you know they M must you know trust him enough from uh knowing having known him for a long time of course and particularly during this uh period of of brexit talks that uh uh barer really kept um kept on track for for several years I mean considering that his name was not even in the running uh Mark let's bring you in because Emanuel maon when he dissolved Parliament he of course dissolved parliament in the aftermath of European elections where his party did quite badly and then he said he wanted a government that was reflective of the mood at the time then we had the snap parliamentary vote we all know uh the outcome of that vote and now he goes and picks somebody from the right if you're on the the left of the political Spectrum here in France you must be up in arms won't you they will be up in arms obviously they are already reacting obviously negatively because uh if you look at it Michel B HS from uh the conservative party uh it's probably the worst performer in the last few years I mean they've lost the presidential election uh the European elections the legislative elections they only have uh 50 or 60 uh MPS in Parliament which is really really a very low number and they get the prime ministership uh well yes but it's a it's a reflection of how fractured uh the uh new French political scene is and Emanuel mcon basically had a choice between Center left and center right and he felt probably uh that if the national rally doesn't veto Michel barer Michelle barer is more or less uh in agreement with him on some of the key reforms Emanuel macron wants uh to really make sure they stay uh especially the pension system reform uh because a leftist prime minister would have said we abrogate your reform or we suspend it it Michelle B will not do so because as is traditional for the conservatives uh he wants actually to push the retirement age even said previously to 65 now it's 64 so there won't be a problem with Emanuel macron Europe obviously uh there will be no clouds on the horizon the the uh big question is what will will he do in terms of the budget well uh we can assume that he will not raise taxes uh that he will say we need really uh to keep the budget the debt the deficit in line so this is more or less what Emanuel Macon has been advocating especially since his re-election a conservative uh policy the big question will be how they will behave VAV V one another uh that's the personal factor and no one has the answer for that because Emanuel macron is a lame dog he cannot be reelected he lost the election uh he wants someone uh who will be there maybe not too much of a Challenger uh but Michelle barer is maybe not so well known but he's an experienced politician he's old enough to make sure that he will be able uh to get some uh wiggle room to be able to be a real prime minister and not someone who pretends to be prime minister we
