[Applause] [Music] amen that's wonderful thank you Rick and Camp that's wonderful music God bless you and uh don't you love music that makes us excited in the lord well a moment ago Dr WBY said that U we don't do Miracles but God does Miracles I notic on the brochure the Mir Miracle of downtown Jacksonville and in my observation been here several times this church is God's miracle and I've just resigned a church that I love so much if I talk about it I would weep in a few weeks we'll move in I'll say we because I'm still a member there we'll move in to a new 7,000 seed Auditorium and uh that church every service has this kind of spirit but I really believe all in all if God were to make every church just alike he would make them like this church I believe it's got it all together and I have an awesome respect for Dr Lindsay and for Dr Vines and uh will you pay my airfare now it was a little teny but I believe he'll do it no I really do I love them dearly and I thank God for men who have a decided life a Christian preacher preacher was never called to search for the truth he was called to preach the truth he's already found in Jesus and that's what these men do and I thank God for them well it's kind of good news and bad news for me to be up here a doctor called a man and said I've got good news and bad news he said what do you want first he said well man he said I I want the I want the good news first he said well I've read your medical reports and you have 48 hours to live' he said that's the good news he said yes he said what's the bad news he said I tried to called you yesterday well it's good news to be preaching at First Baptist Church Jacksonville but it's bad news to follow Dr Warren wiby in fact I remember one time Dr worby sending ad Rogers one of your tapes out of the book of Exodus I was so impressed with uh many of your tapes fact my church members have been impressed with many of your tapes you understand say amen amen the rest of you God will forgive you but I'm grateful for this man doesn't he have a clear concise simple but profound explanation of the word of God and I'm grateful for him you know what he says and he says pungent powerful penetrating things and thank God uh for him he mentioned that when he resigned he got at least a 98% vote when I resigned a few months ago a lady very distraught came to me and she said Oh Brother Bailey you can't leave I said well I you know God has just spoke and she said but it's just horrible I said well I understand she said no you don't understand she said it's just it's the worst thing it's just horrible it's just you can't leave us like this we're about to go into that new building and brother ba you just can't leave us and she was was really crying I said now look wait a minute I said they're going to get a good preacher she said no that's what they said last time it's hard to win with some folks I wasn't going to share these things but the associate pastor in U Huntsville came up and asked me to share this with you and it it is a very interesting uh thing I I I I told about this at the Alabama Pastors conference brother Adrian Rogers was there also and um but I I used to have a member of my church because being a pastor you meet unusual people how many of you know somebody unusual well all of us know some of you looking at your wives or husbands but all of us no unusual people well this man had a strange idiosyncrasy and it was that he got his phrases and his gestures mixed up or he twist metaphors the metaphors never went together I remember one time coming out of a church business meeting he said brother Bailey I didn't like that that bad spirit in that business meeting I said no sir I didn't either he said I want you to look at me I said yeah he said are you looking at me I said yes sir he said I want you know as a church we all just got to come together and we did that several times just like that while I was pastor I remember uh somebody giving us a bus to use in the ministry of the church and one of the deacons complained in in the deacons meeting that the bus had a bad transmission well this other brother that always got his phrases mixed up thought that was the greatest act of ingratitude that he hadd ever heard of of in his life that somebody would complain about an absolutely free unsolicited gift so what it had a bad transmission brother met said in that meeting he said I don't think this Deacon ought to complain about this bus having a bad transmission he said so what it was a gift didn't cost us anything he said what if it hadn't had a body he said what if it hadn't had a motor he said after all don't forget the old phrase the chairman said uh brother matter what phrase he said you know what I'm talking about don't ever look a gift horse in the middle of the street dream we had a youth center move into our city and I didn't like some of the activities going on at the youth center and we were going down James Avenue to a place called Seminary South shopping center and I said to brother met I said you know boy I don't I just don't care for that youth center I said those kids are getting involved with the wrong kind of kids they're going to do some things they should do he said now preacher just calm down just cool down everything's going to be all right he said don't you worry about those kids going up at that youth center he said after all don't forget the old phrase I said yeah he said you know what I'm talking about he said birds of a feather get the early worm I was immediately comforted when he said that now there about 40 of these but I'll tell you one more brother Bill Lucas uh Director of Missions for Taran County Association called me down to his office he said Bailey there's this new pilot project I never heard that phrase in my life of the Southern Baptist convention and I want you to uh go back and lead your church in the pilot project of evangelism for the Southern Baptist convention he said you've been doing well in evangelism go tell your church that you're going to be the Vanguard for this program I said yes sir I'll do it so I went back on Wednesday night I said folks brother Bill Lucas our Director of Missions has asked us to to uh Pioneer this brand new program we're going to be we're just going to launch out in this new program of reaching people for Christ and I'm so excited that we're going to be the ones who will lead the way we're going to be the first we're just going to do it and then I made the mistake no Baptist preacher should make it business meeting I said are there any questions and upshot the lone hand of my friend that always got things a little mixed up he stood his feet and I said do you have a question he said yes or I do he said preacher is this a new program I just spent 30 minutes saying it was a new program I said yes sir he said are we going to be the first to do it I said yes sir he said has anybody ever done it before I said no sir he said all right Pastor I want to tell you I'll back you up on it but I don't want this church to forget the old phrase I said to myself Lord help me through this I said brother met would you like to share that phrase with the entire church he said I certainly would because you got to watch these new programs he said you crawled out on a limb and somebody pull the rug out from Mia I've been there a time or two I'll tell you you know things are not always as they appear to be an old couple getting on a train was knocked out out of the way very abruptly by a smart alic young man the old man was knocked aside the lady was knocked to the earth and the old man picked her up he couldn't believe that a young man would be so rude and uh they got on the plane the woman dusted the dirt off of her dress the old man was in bad shape he had been almost bruised by this rude young man that had rushed onto this train and lo and behold when they got on he was in the birth right in front of them seated by a beautiful young lady one of the most beautiful women that you could possibly imagine and all during this trip this old couple that had been knocked out of the way by this rude man was staring they were staring at each other seated by that beautiful woman and that old couple thought TOS how rude that crass inconsiderate young man knocked us out of the way and all for the next 50 miles he just flirted with that young girl made that old C so mad they didn't know what to do because not only had he knocked them out of the way and bruised them up but here he was being forward and flirtatious to this young girl and she couldn't have any peace of mind at all well finally they went through a dark tunnel and you heard a sound of a kiss a and then you heard a slap when they got on the other side the young girl thought to her yourself huh that old man he leaned over and tried to get a little sugar from his wife and she slapped him that's what the young girl thought the old woman thought you know that young smart elec that knocked us out of the way he leaned over and tried to kiss that beautiful girl and she slapped his face the young man man was thinking as he rubbed his face you know that old man leaned across here and tried to kiss this young woman and she thought it was me and she slapped me the old man was thinking with a smile on his face when we went through that dark tunnel I kissed the back of my hand and SLA the fire out of that young fell [Applause] things are not always what they appear to be years ago I was in Tiana Mexico and going down the street I bought some flowers that I'd never seen anything like them in all of my life and I came to discover that those flowers were really an amalgam of flowers there were Petals of roses and Petals of large lies and Petals of daisies and Petals of every flower that they had literally somehow stuck together in one great flower that really was made of several flowers as I'm hearing preachers today I'm hearing Theology of men who have brought a few pedals from the word of God but several petals either from the jungles of humanism are the Wilderness of liberalism or the hot housee of spectacular ISM and I really believe that what we're seeing today preached is not the rose of Sheron but a man-made flower that will not live nor does it have a lasting fragrance Jesus said something in Mark 8 and Matthew 16 he said Beware of the leaven I want you to do just a moment of scripture Journey with me if you have your Bibles let me see them hold them up do you believe that's the word of God say amen amen take your Bibles I thought I was safe doing that and go back to the Old Testament to the Book of Exodus I want you to see something very important if I may be so bold as to say it I believe what I'm preaching tonight this is a bold statement and I'm understanding all of the tributaries of thought that you could interpret through this statement but I believe the passage I'm using tonight may be the most needful message of 1986 I want you to see the book of Exodus 34:25 it's good to hear the pages of God's word turning Exodus 34:25 Thou shalt not offer The Blood of My Sacrifice with leaven neither shall the sacrifice of the Feast of the Passover be left under the morning go to the Book of Leviticus one more book to your right look at chapter 2: 11 Leviticus 2:11 Leviticus 2:11 no meat offering which you shall bring un the Lord shall be made with leaven for you shall burn no leaven nor any honey in any offering of the Lord made by fire Matthew 16 I want us to understand this Bible study tonight Matthew 16: 6 then Jesus said unto them take heed and Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and and of the Sadducees look at Mark 8 please Mark 8 look at verse 15 speaking of Our Lord again and he charged them saying take heed Beware of the leevan of the Pharisees now here's a new word and the leaven of Herod when I stud the old Testament the one thing I'm convinced of God had no regard for leavon he did not want anything added to the blood sacrifice not even listen if it were honey God said I don't even want your honey when you offer a blood sacrifice to me he said make it pure make it exactly like I said it ought to be and don't you decide what ought to be added to it even if it's as sweet as honey itself I don't want it and when we get to the New Testament we discover Jesus talking about Le Jesus only in his lifetime used the word beware 11 times and eight of the 11 times it was always in this context and what Jesus was saying was he said there are three things that every follower of mine must be aware of and he said it's leaven now children what's leaven you know that yeast that yeast your mother puts in the hot rolls at Thanksgiving you know once a year when you out rolls that yeast that literally takes that dough and it spreads yeast is influence Paul reminded Us in 1 Corinthians 5 that A little leaven lenth the whole loaf and Jesus said Beware of that which you place into my truth that changes the nature of it beware of leev beware of a supplement to the gospel he said for one thing you don't need it you don't need any leav Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees and of Herod and you're going to be astounded when you see how relevant this is for 1986 who were the Sadducees well they were the ones that didn't believe in the Old Testament the Sadducees didn't believe in the resurrection they didn't believe in Heaven or Hell life after death they were all dressed up and no place to go that's why they were sad you see Jesus said Beware of liberals is that what they they were they didn't believe in life after death didn't believe in Heaven hell didn't believe in Resurrection didn't believe in the Old Testament the Sadducees Jesus said Beware of liberals secondly he said Beware of Herod who was Herod who were the herodians well I tell you who they were they were the ones that built the temple of God next to the Pagan temples and when they built the Jewish temple they even placed a Roman Eagle in the Portico because it really didn't matter to them whether they built the herodians a pagan Temple or a Jewish temple because it was all done for mankind and one of them after Herod the Great hadrien the emperor Emperor hadrien allowed there to be a statue of Jupiter at the holy Seer and he built a statue of Venus on Calvary and he said it really did didn't matter because we want this amalgam of Truth we want this compact of paganism and Judaism and Christianity after all it really doesn't matter because one belief is as good as another what really matters is that we please the pagans we please the Jews we please the Christians we just please Mankind and whatever we need to do to keep peace in the Roman Empire that's what we will do Jesus said Beware of the sadu sees the Liberals he said be aware of the herodians the humanist whatever it takes to make mankind happy Jesus said Beware of the humanist last year in Denver Colorado the Nea speaker stood before 12,000 teachers and he said and I quote we realize when students arrive with us they have a belief in God and in country they arrive at the first grade mentally ill and it is the job of the public school teacher to rethink the mindset of America's youth humanism that's deified man and humanized God and ostracized the Savior and sabotaged the scripture humanism is what it is Little Rock Arkansas the teachers received a dictation this past Christmas that said do not ever mention Christmas in the classroom do not mention Christmas holidays you may not have a Christmas tree you may not give Christmas cards we no longer celebrate Christmas this is the winter holidays they weaken to the pressure of a group called The a that stands for the association of cockeyed lawyers United my friend the American civil liberties Union does not stand for civil liberties they stand for our Godless America that's what they stand for Jesus said Beware of the Liberals the Sadducees Beware of the humanist this is exactly what they were the herodians he also said be Ware of the Pharisees Dr AB Barnes said about the Pharisees that the Holy Scripture was not adequate for the Pharisee the Pharisee had to have his faith bolstered by signs and wonders and miracles and the tradition of the past those were the spectacular IST my friend it really doesn't matter whether you're leav is liberalism or whether it's neop Pentecostalism preaching the gospel of greed claim it and name it Jesus said no leav just take the pure unmitigated unadulterated word of God and preach it I don't want your ideas whether it is a bitter herb or whether it's dripping with a sweetness of positive thinking honey ladies and gentlemen this world does not need more positive thinking our self-esteem what it needs is the preaching of the word of God clear and simple and plain and without compromise a man falling off a building doesn't need somebody to holler as he passes the fifth floor think positive he needs a n under him and a man drowning in the ocean doesn't need somebody to say all you need to do is have a better self-image he needs a life preserver a man lost in Hellbound and sin ridden does not need a new lecture on how to look in the mirror and think you're beautiful what he needs is knowing how to receive Jesus Christ in the free pardon of sin that's what he needs Jesus said Beware of the leav he said I don't want it I'll not accept it I'm amazed at the innocuous titles of so-called churches I'm reading today I made a list of few Family Worship Center the area church that just set your heart on fire Community Fellowship religious worship Place Believers Chapel Church of the gay Believers last one's a little queer ladies and gentlemen a man that doesn't preach the word of God ought to get out of the business and go sell shoes at Sears we don't have a right to have some vague nebulous interpretation of what faith is we were called into the ministry to preach the word of God and not your ideas Jesus said Beware of the leaven be aware of any supplement any addition to this book or to my gospel he said I will not tolerate it Napoleon said there was one word he did not have in his dictionary and it was the word impossible Jesus could have never said that because Jesus made it clear it is impossible to have a Godly life that follows the maxims of carnality and when you add leaven to this beautiful precious inherent infallible word Jesus said I will not receive it I'll not receive your offering I Believe In this passage where Jesus spoke he was saying at least four things that I want us to consider tonight that I believe are essential for this truth that I want you to never forget because you see if there's one truth of the Bible is it is that there is none of the name given among men whereby you must be saved if there's one truth of the Bible it is I am the way the truth and the life and no man comes to the father but by me and when I recently did a study of the book of Hebrews and preached almost a year from that glorious book I discovered that the essential message of Hebrews is that as good as the Old Testament was and as wonderful as Judaism is it is not to be an addendum to the Christian faith and what Jesus and what God was saying to the Hebrew Christians is you walk away from all of your ties of the past and you have come to found me you don't need me plus you don't need me plus Judaism you don't need me plus phariseeism you don't need anything but me ladies and gentlemen I stand before you today to say to you it's not Jesus in politics it's not Jesus in religion it's not even Jesus in your church just just Jesus he said preach me I don't want a leavened gospel I don't want the influence of some foreign substance and when you read the book of Luke Chapter n you discover Jesus is not giving any excuses you married a woman you need to appease her he said I'm sorry come on and follow me you bought a piece of property and you need to look I'm sorry come and follow me you've got to bury your father I'm sorry come and follow me Let the dead bury the dead and when Jesus calls a man it is a clearcut from the past and it's a new life behold all things have passed away behold all things have become new now what was he saying I believe he was saying four things all of them are bewares number one Beware of the appealing nature of Tolerance Beware of the appealing nature of Tolerance you know we never preach tolerance in any other field medicine for instance well your husband's had a heart attack I recommend he shovel snow tomorrow well that's just a little tumor growing in his brain why don't we see how big I mean after all a tumor has a right to live we don't have tolerance in Industry well sir this car arrived without an axel or steering wheel but let's be broadminded about it I think you ought to go ahead and buy it be very interesting journey home we're not tolerant in sports well the Patriots didn't get across the goal line but they have a good spirit let's give him seven points the ball didn't stay within the yellow line but after all he swung hard let's let it be called good how about in marriage do we are we tolerant I love my husband he's very faithful to me he only has three dates with other women a week you see how how ridiculous it is when we try to be tolerant in the normal areas of life now ladies and gentlemen I'm for being tolerant but when it comes to the word of God God never called Bailey Smith to edit the word of God or to allow other faiths to be real he said that I am to preach the truth and it is not my opinion when the Bible says that there's none of the name given among heaven whereby you must be saved that is not my opinion that is the word of God and people say but we need to love our Catholic friends and we need to love our Jewish friends and we need to love our Buddhist friends and we need to love our mohammadan friends yes we do but we need to tell them the truth and we need to tell them without Jesus they don't stand a chance they don't stand a chance oh the appealing nature of Tolerance we want to be hell fellow well met oh there there goes Dr Bailey Smith he is so understanding isn't he tolerant would you please listen to the profound words of aw toer a new decalog has been adopted by and listen to this phrase the Neo Christians of our day the first words of which reads Thou shalt not disagree and a new set of Beatitudes too which begins blessed are they that tolerate everything for they shall not be made accountable for anything it is now the accepted thing to talk over religious differences in public with the understanding that no one will try to convert another are point out errors in his belief imagine Moses Dr toer says agreeing to take part in a penal discussion with Israel Over the golden calf or Elijah engag engaging in a gentlemanly dialogue with the prophets of bell are try to picture our Lord Jesus Christ seeking a Meeting of Minds with the Pharisees to Iron Out differences the blessing of God is promised to The Peacemaker but the religious negotiator had better watch his step Darkness and Light can never be brought together by talk some things are not negotiable Dr toer is Right a lady said to me brother Bailey don't you I kind of think you're broad-minded and you've got a good education don't you believe all religions are about the same I saidoh yes ma'am she said I knew you'd be understanding you believe all religions are about the same I said yes ma'am they'll all send you to Hell they'll all send you to Hell folks I stand before you and I say to you that is good as some people are in other faiths the whole purpose of the word of God and the whole purpose of Jesus Christ coming to this earth is men could not find God apart from Christ that's why he died on the cross that's why he's going to come again to receive his church unto himself that's the purpose of this word and I want to tell you one of the worst religions in all the world is the Baptist religion now I've preached in 47 States and I've seen thousands and thousands and thousands and thousands of people come to know Christ and many of them are church members but folks we've got the idea that if we're going to win The World of Christ we have a potluck supper in a study course and a study course is what you have to learn one more thing you don't intend to do anything about somebody said the Baptist slogan ought to be meet it eat it and beat it folks we don't need more religious meetings in our church we need a church full of people who have been touched by God and the fire of Heaven have fallen upon their hearts and they say Jesus is the only way and the Bible is the only truth and I'll stand on the word of God and I'll pre Christ is the only way and I will be tolerant as long as I don't have to compromise one ey Oda of the word of God it's only way we're going to win this world I believe we've been too tolerant can you see what's happening to our world I was preaching at the Arkansas state evangelism conference last week before I got up to preach a man told me he said did you hear about the space shuttle I said no sir he said well he said less than 2 minutes of the air it exploded and all seven people are dead man my heart fell sick that I had to get up and preach after that I just returned from the First Baptist Church Meritt Island for a crusade and all over that City near where that space shuttle left this Earth there signs on Marquees saying that we're praying for the crew and for the family and and we're all saddened by this and we need God's help and folks I was sad and all of America was brought together in a sense that we have lost seven people and we weed our our president wept our Congressman wept our our ministers wept our people wept seven people but that day 4,000 unborn babies were murdered in their mother's womb it's time somebody weeps Revolutionary War 25,000 Americans died Civil War 498,000 Americans died World War I 116,000 Americans died World War II 46,000 Americans died the Korean War 54,000 Americans died the Vietnamese War 58,000 Americans died but since Ro versus Wade the war on The Unborn 50 million Americans have died in 1857 the Supreme Court met and every now and then somebody who is a CTO intellectual say but you know the Supreme Court is the law of our land and we've got to be careful surely they would make a mistake because the Supreme Court said that the unborn child is and I quote our Supreme Court a nonperson 1857 the same same body met and said that free descendants of slaves could not be citizens because the black man is not a person the Supreme Court ruled that the black man was not a person that was called The Dread Scott case of 1857 ladies and gentlemen the Supreme Court was wrong then and it is wrong today it is still wrong God help us I believe we've been too [Applause] tolerant I believe we've been too tolerant when 600,000 American children are in child pornography 20,000 of them stolen from baby carriages stolen out of the mother's arms stolen from homes stolen from back 20,000 a year are never found I believe we've been two tolerant I believe we've been too tolerant when networks poke fun of everything you and I hold de I mean everything I was watching a program the other day came in taking off my coat and a thing called hotel and they were braiding the man because he was Disturbed that his girlfriend had had an affair with another guy I couldn't believe Love Boat Saturday night made everybody watching the program desire a woman to leave her husband and to go off with a young man 20 years her Junior promoting the joys of divorce ladies and gentlemen you and I are not tied to the times we're tied to the word of God we're tied to the word of God I don't care what the world says if God disagrees we've got to follow God we're not tied to current trends of morality and current trends teenage suicide every 90 minutes a teenager commits suicide in America one every 90 minutes and it's an epidemic proportions the immorality problem is serious I believe we've been too tolerant well I believe Jesus in that passage Beware of the leaven was saying Beware of the appealing nature because it's appealing to want to be considered tolerant but it's more important to be considered right with God secondly he was saying beware of altering the of the person of Jesus Christ oh it's amazing what you hear Jesus is today folks he's either Christ or crazy he's either Cosmic or comic he's either incarnate or he's insane Billy gram is right when he says Jesus is the only way or he's no way Jesus when he was born older than his mother in the same age as his father why What A Savior the Heavenly son of an Earthly mother the Earth Earthly son of a Heavenly Father What A Savior they said about him sir we would see Jesus we see him in the miracle of his birth and a virgin shall conceive and bear a son and his name Shall be Called Emanuel God With Us the miracle of his birth sir we would see Jesus in The Miracle of his birth also in the meaning of his life Joseph szu said storms may break and winds may blow and pestilences may wreck havoc and civilizations May age and churches May Fail but there's one thing about Christ that is eternal he is in the world to the End of Time ah listen also in the message of his cross without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sin oh folks when I look at some of the problems we have with the homosexuals and and somebody says man we shouldn't be on the back of those poor people I remember the first person I put on the pastor's conference program was Anita Bryant when I was president when we met in Atlanta chicken preachers wrote me and said you shouldn't do that you're going to get in trouble one preacher called me on the telephone he said well I tell you what I don't like is that a woman is leading this fight against homosexuals I said I don't like the fact either that a woman woman is leading it but there's not a man in the country with guts enough to do it my friend Anita Bryant didn't hate homosexual she hated sin that's what she hated God give us the kind of Courage it needs to see that we can tell a homosexual God hates your sin but he loves you and the blood of Jesus Christ will not cover your sin that's not scriptural the blood of Jesus Christ doesn't cover sin it blots it out and you can tell the homosexual the only way that you can be liberated and free is that when Christ comes in all the shackles are broken and you become a new person in Christ folks the answer for the need of mankind and the way to find Freedom where there is captivity is for Christ to come and set the Captivity free oh he can do it oh also we need to see Jesus in the might of his resurrection aren't you glad that tomb is empty I never read such a story in my life as when during the Battle of water that semaphore children you know what the semaphore is the man that stands on the aircraft carrier and he waves the flag to communicate whether the airplanes are safe to land and the pilots can literally read the message as that semaphore is waving those flags during the battle of waterl the Duke of Wellington for England Napoleon for France they're on the Tower of London people were so concerned they received the message and they're on top of that Tower the the man the morning of that great battle they all came and the semore was there and he waved those flags and they began to read how Wellington was doing and what they read was Wellington defeated they couldn't believe it all of a sudden the fog as it so often does came into that City and they could not even see the semor much less the signaling flags and their hearts were so depressed and they were so dejected that Wellington was defeated but some hours later when the fog lifted they looked up again to that Tower and the semore waved and they could see the entire message they looked again and it said Wellington defeated Napoleon my friend on Calvary when all of the world looked at Jesus it seemed like the world was saying Christ defeated Satan has had his day Christ defeated but I want to tell you on that third day there was no power of Heaven or Hell or earth that could hold that stone but the world got the whole message the message was not Christ defeated the message was Christ defeated death up from the grave he arose praise God he's coming again in the Majesty of his return aren't you glad you know Jesus Oh what power there is in his name years ago when I was witnessing to a man I was with an evangelist named named Buddy youth a little girl came running out of the house said brother Smith my daddy said he doesn't want to hear about Jesus I said guess what he's going to she said but daddy's very mad you don't need to go in brother Bailey you don't need to go in I went in and began to visit with Mr Mills and he began to curse his little wife and she tried to do he said oh shut up you blankety blank and made me angry I said Mr Mills don't talk that way to your wife he said listen you blanket blank preacher come in here talking about Jesus I said yes sir I said Mr Mills I love you and I want you to be saved he reached over the corner he said I'm going to kill you preacher he put his hand on a shotgun in the corner at that moment I knew that evangelist behind their pastors because that's where the guy went right behind me when Mr Mills put his hand on that shotgun I reached over and I took my left hand and I put it on his wrist wrist my hand was that far from that shotgun I said Mr Mills if you don't let go I'm going to hit you in the mouth in the name of the Lord of course I said I'm going to hit you in the mouth he said but you're a preacher I said yeah I've got some sermons I haven't heard yet boy he got angry he charged off and I said Mr Mills Jesus died for you and he loves you that man didn't get saved he was mad wanted to kill me want to kill his wife I was a single man at that time several months later my wife and I were married and the first morning of our married life we went to church in Jenny Arkansas and I walked into that church and there on my left was Mr Mills I checked for the shotgun it was not there and his wife right in the middle of a song Mr Mills came over and he began to hug me he said preacher I'm sorry I tried to shoot you one day he said but preacher the thing that got with me he said I was saved two weeks ago he said every night I went to bed I kept hearing you say Jesus died for you and he loves you Mr Mills and he said I heard that all night and all day and he said finally I got saved he said preacher there is power in the name of Jesus Oh folks listen we don't want to alter who Jesus is Jesus is the Incarnate pre-existent Son of God Jesus said be aware of those that try to alter who I am thirdly he said and I must hurry he said Beware of avoiding the Pains of conviction you see we try to make the gospel palatable sometime it's irritating we try to make the gospel positive sometime it's negative we try to make the gospel thrilling and exciting sometimes it is sobering and convicting we try to make the gospel love and sweetness sometimes it's wrath and judgment we try to make the gospel Comfort The Afflicted sometimes it afflicts the comforted Jesus said Beware of avoiding the Pains of conviction Daniel if you stick with your convictions you're going to be in trouble but Daniel Prayed he just prayed David you fight that giant you're going to be in trouble but he fought him John the Baptist could not tolerate the sin of Herod and herodias Peter and James said you say what you want to but we cannot but preach what we have known and what we have seen Paul and Silas said you put us in jail if you want to and they stood for the truth of God in the Old Testament The Voice cried out where is the god of Elijah but oh men of God I tell you the question today is not where is the god of Elijah the question of our day where are the Elijah of God that's the question where are the men who will stand I tell you I must be personal with you when I tell you last June I watched a prop profor a seminary Professor get on national television and when he noticed the audience would not believe according to the word of God he compromised he threw Jesus to the wind I sat there and wept until my eyes were red when he had a national audience to say yes Jesus is the only way yes the word of God is the only way the only way you can get to heaven is to be born again but he began to read his audience and he saw the Applause went to those who didn't believe that strongly or that narrowly and he threw Jes Jesus to the wind oh God help us that we might produce a generation of preachers that say I'm going to believe it and I'm going to preach it in the spirit of Christ and in the truth of Christ and if the world likes it that's great but if they don't I'm not far sale I'm going to preach it when I thought of that man I remember the little booklet I have at home the little soft bat book I had in seminary called early Christianity some of you have that book I believe it's by Blandon early Christianity has the story of a Christian girl placed in the Coliseum and she was told to look at the Caesar and say Caesar es curios Caesar is Lord she wouldn't say it the man came out and began to fondle her body here before mocking lwd men imagine a pure saintly girl the epitome of Purity all you have to say is Caesar es curios Caesar is Lord she wouldn't say it finally they stripped her of all of her clothes she stood before a crowd that would make this crowd look like the smallest Sunday school room say Caesar is Lord some would whisper to her you can still believe Jesus is Lord but just say Caesar is Lord she wouldn't do it finally they said if you don't it's going to mean your life that young Christian girl with a fire of God in her soul shaking embarrassed humiliated she looked up at the Caesar she had been told to say Caesar is curios and she looked up with tears coming down her face she said christas s curios Christ is Lord they took her naked body they put it on the horns of a bull they let the lies out of the other side of that Coliseum and they fought that bull and her body was riddled to Pieces but she did that because she couldn't find it in her a place to compromise her conviction and if we want a Revival in the Southern Baptist convention and if we want a Revival across this world it's going to take men and women who say Life Death poverty or riches health or sickness I'll stand for Christ whatever the cost God give us that kind of conviction last of all number four I believe Jesus was saying Beware of the awful consequences of compromise what's happened in a world of leavened preaching a leavened gospel every 27 minutes in America murder is committed 55 a day in my lifetime I've seen a president assassinated a senator assassinated and our current president was shot and lay at the point of death for just a while 1 and a half million babies a year are slaughtered we call it abortion God calls it murder many of those babies were taken and put into Grinders to make cosmetics and cattle syum 71 murders daily are committed by drunks 26,000 here on the highway 200,000 people a year are killed because of alcohol and yet the Gallup PO said 75% of the pulpits in America never say a negative word against alcoholism there are 200 references in the Bible against it you say well I never said anything in my church then you need to repent and you need to stand again you say well I'm just a social Drinker why don't you be just a social killer God hates alcohol folks in any form and any am out John Holden my favorite preacher one of my favorite preachers of the past John Holden was noticing as he stood at the shore as they were bringing people in after ship had capsized John Holden got in a little boat everybody else had stopped and his mother came and grabbed him said Son don't go out into the water I'm sure they've got all the survivors but mother something inside of me tells me that I must go out into the ocean to see if there's somebody else left there and the mother said Son don't go John please don't go it's getting dark and it's foggy please don't go he said but mother I've got to go and he took his mother's arms and placed him by her side and said mother I've just got to go something within me compels me to go John Holden got alone in a little rowboat finally he disappeared out in the dark darkness and the midst and the fog it seemed an interminable time than anyone heard from John Holden and finally after several hours they saw a little silhouette of a figure in a boat making its way toward Shore somebody said I believe that's brother Holden I believe that's John Holden and they said John John is that you they heard a voice from the boat yes this is John Holden John was there anybody out there and did you get him oh yes there was somebody out here and I got him and tell my mother it's my brother folks out don't life sees there are brothers and sisters by creation that need to become our brothers and sisters by Redemption but if the boat has a hole in it how will we ever rescue a Dying World a sword with a sheath still on it never stopped an aggressive enemy watered down penicillin never saved a desperately ill life and a speech filled with uncertainty and fear never let an army to bravery and to Victory and a gospel that's leavened with every kind of popular Trend and World fad will never save a Hellbound devil assaulted sin seek World men we need to take it and believe it and to preach it pure and powerful and full of promises God's unleavened gospel [Applause]
